So frustrated...
# Jun 02 2012 at 6:41 PM Rating: Decent
I have rode on that ship at least 40 times trying to get the pirates to attack. I am so frustrated and want to give up so badly. I've devoted so many hours I just want some sign of hope of perhaps, one day, receiving this Sand Charm. Am I doing something wrong? I retrieved the quest.

Am I not supposed to stay below deck? I've been using the chat box method to determine if they are going to show up... Will they not show up if I am down below?

I just am so sick and tired riding on this damn boat. Isn't the percentage of hijacked boats supposed to be around 15%? 15% my ***... Help me make sense of this please. :/

End rant.
Pirates :D

I just killed Blackbeard and a few skeletons no Sand Charm but i did get some Sea cudgel.
I did not see notice anything different, not like someone said about black backdrop on chat screen, everything was basically normal,no fog or rain either.I took about 5 trips back n forth and nothing, then the next day first trip the pirates boarded.I really did not hear much of the different music, but was funny,i was fishing and saw the boat coming closer,so i knew it was them.

Forgot to check log,but the AOE GA nuke Blackbeard did was quite potent to a level 80 Galkan,if i was not Galkan,i might have been wiped in one shot.I went down to about 400 hp from pretty much full, and my Mithra whm who was standing rather far away also got hit and went to near death about 70 hp left lol.Only took one AOE hit though,i don't even think he tried to cast another ,if did i may have interupt it.
They didn't seem to link at all,i killed several one at a time,i believe they all use Aero spells and i couldn't find my baraero, otherwise might not be too tough a fight at all, even for a 70-75,with outside healing.
Drop time

I've travelled this boat so many times i'm sea sick, is there a certain day/time/moon that the crossbones are more likely to appear?
Lucky, for a change

Grrr

After about my 9th boat trip today pirates finally pop. I also had the joy and pleasure of Silverhook popping too. Luckily I was avoiding him until my health was in the yellow from trying to get the sand charm from the crossbones. He proceeded to aggro me from across the ship and beat my THF55 *** to death. Now I lay dead in Mhaura waiting for a kind soul to Raise me.

just a tip: talk to Blandine, then to the guys at the dock, then you must EXIT the dock to keep doing the quest! if you talk to Blandine for the 2nd time while still inside the docking area, you wont get the CS. you must exit the dock to get the CS with her and Celeestina
Little luck never hurt anyone...

I flagged this quest tonight, went out fishing on the boat (alone). Countless rides later with my inventory 1 short of being full of fish I'm thinking 'just one more and then bedtime'. As it zones I see the chatbox on black... oooh pirates! I'm lvl 35 MNK with only fishing gear and my Impact Knuckles... I provoke one crossbones all the way up the stairs to the back to avoid a major linkage. Just manage to kill him without dying myself, and... ding, sand charm. Not a bad end to my night :D
Not a short quest
# Apr 21 2006 at 8:51 PM Rating: Decent
This quest was very easy, just took a while.
I think I took the ship about 8-10 times before the pirates showed up, the only mobs that came off the pirate that time were Crossbones and some other skeleton like pirates.

The charm dropped off the first Crossbone I killed. I went as blm73 and the mobs conned all as too weak, not to mention the others didnt link to the one I Biod.

Anyone planning on doing this quest, be advised that this quest may take a bit of your time, so don't expect you'll get the charm fast. Each boat-trip takes about 12 minutes, and the pirate ships dont come often. Keep away from Blackbeard unless you are prepared to fight him. The pirate ship pulled up to my airship on Iceday - full-moon.
What is this?

I was on my way back to mharu to finish of a quest.
Decided to take it easy on the boat ride, rahter than teley over to mea.

And the ship got attacked by pirates.
I Know that I could not take on Silverhook.
S I just decided to wack a few skiltions pulling them with dia.

On the 3rd mob it droped.
Did not have a clue what it was for so came here to check it out.

It took about 12 total tries of riding the boat to finally get the pirates to attack. I did this over the course of about a week (3 tries a day). When the pirates did attack, the day was Watersday, at about 14:00. I had heard that darksday at full moon was the best time to go, but in this case it wasn't. Perhaps the time of day doesn't matter. Anyways, as a level 75, I soloed the Crossbones easily. I had to kill 5 of the mobs before one finally dropped the Sand Charm. Luckily, there was only 2 other people on the boat and they were too low level to fight the pirates - so I had the mobs all to myself. Still, whenever I did kill one, another one or two would pop in.
How to know if pirates are coming
# Oct 21 2005 at 4:56 PM Rating: Excellent
Ok, I have camped the NMs Silverhook and Blackbeard with a friend of mine a few times, and he told me how to know when pirates are coming.

If your chat log appears before you can see anything else on the screen,(characters, environment, basically anything) pirates are going to appear on the boat, so get ready.

Alrighty, I was on the boat as a level 41 monk, and I hear someone scream "PIRATES!" I look to the side of the boat, and sure enough, the pirates are in hot pursuit of our boat. They catch up beside us, and they start popping all over the boat. Having gotten Raging Fists the night before, I ran up to them and exacted my revenge for the countless times the bony bastards had ripped me to shreds as a MNK in the teens. There were three monks on board, so we partied up and OBLITERATED them. None of us had treasure hunter, but we got 6 sand charm drops off roughly 10 or 11 pirates. Either we were extremely lucky, or you all have very bad luck. Long story short, all three of us have Bostaneuaix maps now.

I occasionally take the ferry at the New and Full Moons to fish. During the New Moon in particular, it is not uncommon to get pirates during on the trip from Mhaura to Selbina. Been lucky enough to not encounter Blackbeard yet, but I lost track of how many Crossbones I've killed with no drop on the Sand Charm.

Until today that is^^
death to the survivors!
# Aug 22 2005 at 6:12 AM Rating: Decent
I rode the ferry back and forth about 4 times before pirates popped. Pirates plus Blackbeard. Haha. There were about 7 people on the boat, 1 was just fishing, not paying attention.
Everyone else, except me because I was only in my 40s was attacking it, the tank being a 74 NIN.

After everyone but me and the fishing WHM was dead, the pirates slowly began to disappear, but not until Blackbeard casted Water III on me, which immediately killed me. As soon as I died, I recieved a sandcharm. :)
I hate the sand charm!

I've known about this quest for quite a while. The only time I ever saw pirates was when I was too weak to kill them. After I became stronger, I've never been able to catch them. The other day, I hop on the boat, to escort some low level players through Buburimu, and the pirates pop. I killed them all, solo, and the sand charm dropped. A lv22 war got the drop.. The next night, I was on the boat again, from boredom.. Pirates spawned again. I was so happy at a second chance that I was spamming death at every skeleton I saw. a new NM (Silverhook) appeared, cast Flood on some poor victim and killed 'em 1 shot.. then came up and proceeded to beat me down like the sea horror beats on newbies... I got a second sand charm, and death, in one fast trip.
Oops!?!

I had just gotten done with CoP promy mea and was looking to go to Sandy. I decided to go the long way and take the boat. Well lucky me I get attacked by pirates. First Crossbones I kill I get the drop. I /say "Did anyone get any drops?" Someone says nope did you? "Yeah, a sand charm, whats it for?"

Upon that many /slaps followed lol.
