Summary

The guiding bell is hidden somewhere inside Delkfutt's Tower. Brutus wants you to bring it back for his deceased chocobo.

Walkthrough

Talk to Brutus at G-7 in the chocobo stables of Upper Jeuno to start this quest.

Next, head to the 10th floor in Upper Delkfutt's Tower. Kill Gigas Wallwatchers, Gigas Stonemasons, or Gigas Kettlemasters to get a Delkfutt's Chest Key. The chest seems to spawn in one of several locations: (a) Near the elevator, (b) G-8, (c) I-10, (d) F-7 or (e) H-6. Opening the chest will get you the key item Guiding Bell.

Return to Brutus in Upper Jeuno for your Barbaroi Axe.

Did this in 5 minutes. Flagged the quest on BST, changed to my THF75 and killed 2 Stonemasons and the 2nd one dropped it. Went around the corner where the pots where and the chest was there. I would've just used my thief tool but just incase i had the horrible luck of getting trapped and weakened for an hour would've sucked.

The return trip w/o a warp scroll was longer than the trip to get the chest ^^.

Used my key i saved from 3-3 helping to get up to the top. I suppose i could have solo'ed this on my 75BLM but where is the fun in that.

Using an Ancient Bat i picked up from the way to the back door i beat down teh 2 bogies in my way (recieved curse too ^_^). so i was safely omw to teh elevator, and i got walk slower than normal.

Popped wihtout aggro on floor 10. used a Meat Jug for Tiger pet and was able to take them out reasonably fast. after i got my key drop from gigas in teh elevator room i decided to look for the chest. Opened the door adn Mimas was there...

Fortunately i remained outta sight and heal'ed tiger to full (stay). then 2hr'ed and sent tiger at mimas. tiger alone was able to get him down to about 48% b4 he 2hr'ed. i chose at this point to kite him till hundred fists wore. after which tiger died when mimas was at about 10% popped another tiger ftw! no drop.

Wandered around and didnt find chest decided to check back in elevator room and aggroed the NM. Fought this one off with my remaining rabbit pets. Took a EES to the face and was dropped to 43hp. ended up spamming curing waltz like 8-10x while he then proceeded to double attack me 4x in a row. i somehow survived adn was able to win. after beating him i promptly popped my last rabbit and used my NPC for another chest hunt. Found Chest and opened it, got my item and headed out to Jeuno again.

Lesson: sneak and invis is for suckas

Just solo'd this quest last night as a 40BST/20WHM. If you've done your mission for the delkfutt key and take the elevator up to the 10th floor, be prepared to possibly take on a few giants when you arrive - which you should be able to do without *much* difficulty. I didn't get aggro'd when I went up because nothing was facing my direction, but I was standing right next to Porph and 3 other giants. Bring Prism Powder ^.^ The Giants are quite easy to solo with a normal crab familiar, actually, and I only killed about 5 giants to get the key. It took me an hour to actually get to a chest though, because two people beat me to it. During that hour, 3 more keys dropped, even though I couldn't take them XD The chest spawn locations are all very close to each other, too. The only out of the way one is by the elevator. It all makes for a very easy quest, if you're patient (and Giants drop like, 70-132 gil a pop too)

My one word of advice, though, is to NOT try and kill Mamis, who spawns quite frequently in front of the door to the elevator room. One of the people on my LS said "He's only lvl 36! You can take him!" and I almost got murdered by Hundred Fists ^.^ Miraculously, both my pet and I survived, but we were both in red health (no drop though XD). Also, I didn't chance taking on a Magic Pot, so I can't really say how hard they are, but just to be safe, don't cure yourself around them ^.^

Just thought some would like to know...when you talk to Brutus and attempt to get the BST AF1 quest (or any other quest from him), he will give you this quest and seemingly, you must complete it before getting another quest for him.

Oh well...free Chocobo Egg for me!

i killed over 50 evil spirits and lots of gigas on 7-9th floor and the key didn't drop. i decided to go to the top floor and kill the gigas there and it dropped withing 5 minutes. i don't think you should waste your time with evil spirits.

Just found my chest at H-7 on floor 8, and picked it as THF52. there was no aggro all the way up, so this could be done easily without aggro at level 50 any job

gotta go test my new axe ^^

I did this last night as a 40 BST/WHM. I brought two stacks of prism powder and silent oil. Of course I forgot about my newly acquired SNEAK. Whoops.

For bats use sneak and for everything like the GIGAs and GOBS use invisibile/prism powder. It's not worth fighting your way up unless you have all night and love links.

The way up can get confusing, but i've been there before. I couldn't remember the way 100% so I used the good map in the FFXI Atlas book.

I believe on floor 7 I killed 5-6 Evil Spirits and no drop. Those things are a PAIN to kill. I'd have to usually use 3 Cure IIs during the fight, but I didn't bring any defense food. They'll also curse you which is super annoying. Around in this same area you can kill other Gigas for the key. I had no luck on this level.

I suggest just killing the giants. The evil spirits aren't worth the trouble. I eventually went up to floor 10. On the tenth floor I killed about 10 giants and then finally got the key. I got the key from hardest gigas to kill. I think it was Spirekeeper. All of them are quite easy to kill. With the perfect gear configuration, CC would hold hate the entire battle.

Before I came to floor 10 I saw a chest just before the teleportor in the goblin room before it. I went back down and it was there. I sent CC to a gob in the way and traded my key and acquired the bell. I got aggro from every job in the room and just ran back and teleported to level 10 again.

I didn't bring a warp scroll and my warp cudgel was down but just planned on logging out here until it was back up.

Decided that since I gained a lot of EXP here I wouldn't delevel. For fun I went in to try and kill Porphyrion solo at 40 with CC. Pulled him away from everything and got a lot of hate but he wasn't hitting me for very much. Pulling him away is risking because he'll use a ranged attack for 120dmg or so. I got him down to 15% health and he used Eagle Eye Shot for 254dmg! Of course I only had 250 hp at the time and I died. I think if you keep your HP in the yellow the whole time and dont get links you could beat him. I only used one CC and a reward. Bring lots of hi-potions and it'd be impossible to die unless you got links. At 45 i'll come back here to get rank 4 solo. I did that before at 52 with my monk with no problem as well.

Anyway, this whole quest took me about 3 - 3.5 hours solo. The key didn't want to drop. I only used 1 stack of Pet Food Zeta and about 12 crabs. It's kind of expensive to do this solo, but everything is pretty easy to kill. I didn't attempt to kill the Urns though.

Ran through the tower last night as a 55thf after getting the quest. Found the chest, picked the chest, got the bell, went back to Jeuno and got the axe.

So lockpicking for the bell once the quest is activated is possible, and saves you the trouble of finding a key if you have thf levelled.

Start Area: Brutus (G-7, Upper Jeuno chocobo stables/auction house)
Items Required: Delkfutt's Chest Key
Items Granted: Barbaroi Axe

To start the quest, you must talk to Brutus as a level 40+ Beastmaster. Brutus will inform you of his first chocobo that is dying, and he would very much like a legendary bell for the chocobo to ensure that it goes to paradise in the afterlife. To get the bell, you have to go to Middle Delkfutt's Tower and open a Treasure Chest for the key item, this can be done as any job you want. Treasure Chests spawn on the eigth and ninth floors. A map of chest locations can be found here, or if you're lazy:

Eigth Floor:
F-7
H-7
H-9
J-9

Ninth Floor:
H-6
F-8
I-8
J-8 (handy location)

As for the key dropping mobs, Gigas are all well and good... but the drop rate on them is horrible. You can go to the tenth floor and kill Gigas wishing for a key, or you can just kill a couple Evil Spirits and be done with it. What makes Evil Spirits great is they spawn around some of the chest floors and locations, so you might know exactly where the chest is while you're looking for the key. Some Evil Spirit spawns that I know are:

Fifth Floor:
H-6, 1 Spawns here with a Bogy/Banshee.

Seventh Floor:
H-6, right by the teleport 2 spawn here.

Ninth Floor:
J-8, 1 spawn here, with a treasure chest pop as well (10 min repop for the Spirit).

When I helped a friend do it, we would kill the Evil Spirit on the Ninth Floor, and run down and kill the Spirits on the Seventh Floor, and if you still don't have the key, repeat. I've done this twice now and the key drops are super easy off of these guys, first time was second kill (w/TH), second time was 4th or 5th kill (no TH).

Once you have your key item bell, return it to Brutus to get your axe of righteous smashing, you once again have to be on bst to get the axe (not tested, but just play it safe and switch back to bst).

This was a great help to me a bit ago when I did this quest solo @ BST40. Didn't need to beg for high level help, and the key dropped on the second Evil Spirit I fought on the seventh floor. I didn't even have TH (went /WHM, which was nice for Silence), but I did go during a good moon phase.

Thanks to this post and the map over at Somepage, I got this all done in less than 30 minutes, and that included making my way up to the seventh floor from the start of Middle Delkfutt's Tower (4th floor). Rate up! ^^b

Key and chests
# May 31 2005 at 11:53 AM Rating: Decent
Any of the Gigas on the tenth floor can drop the key. So it is quicker to just go to 10 and fight them until you get the chest key.

We found the chest in two locations. One was on the tenth floor in the room just around the corner from the room Prophyrion is in. Mimas may be in your way, but usually some high-level will come by and take him out. The second spot we found a chest was in H-7 on the eight floor.

Hope this helps.

Can you still get the axe if you open the chest using a different job? I was thinking of killing them on my RDM and opening the chest, not sure if this would work.

Yes, I did this last night with my DRK, so you definitely CAN do this whole quest with another job, although you have to talk to Brutus as a BST. Not sure if you have to talk to him as BST in the end, but I doubt it. I did talk to him as BST however, since I was on my way back out to level.

It took me a couple of hours to find this damn thing running all over floors 8-10. I was battling a JP THF who kept picking the lock and when I would ask him {Treasure} {Box} = {Beastmaster} {Artifact} {Axe} {Can I have it}, he kept saying {I don't understand}. Idiot! Why the hell is there no autotranslate for treasure chest or treasure coffer? Seems that would only make sense. Maybe too much sense.

I had a nice stroke of luck with this one. Level 39 BST. As i had my Delkfutt Key I had simply planned on easily getting to the top floor via the Basement Staircase behind the Cermet Door.

I get to the base of the stairs going up and see two Giant Hallwatchers and Two Giant Butchers in the room.

(There was also an Ele but a Red Mage was already killing it when i got there)

So I sent my pet in after the Butcher's Bats and then we proceeded to kill both of the Butchers in the same way.

Then with only the two Hallwatchers remaining, I pulled one at a time with my CrabFamiliar. Second Hallwatcher dropped my key.

Now when I hit 40 I will activate the quest and Sneak myself around until I find the Chest.

So while these two Hallwatchers don't give you very high odds since you would have to wait for them to respawn... you are relatively safe in this area since at 39 all the Giants in the Basement were EP.

Careful on your way in however as you will pass a room with two Urns, and a hallway with two Bogys.

My pet and I cleared all of them easily.

I had a little trouble understanding the chest locations listed above. Those locations are for the various maps of Delkfutt's. I found the chest at F-7 or F-8 on the eighth floor. Yes, that means I went from 10 to 9 to 8 to 9 to 8. You may have to search exhaustively.

However, don't go up to the eleventh floor! I don't think there are chests up there and the mobs suddenly get very vicious (lvl 60+).

Thank you for the tip to get to the 10th floor from the basement, that was a real time saver. So is this: bring a warp cudgel to get home.

Also, I'd bet many mobs drop the key, a Torturer dropped it for me. Leave the Thunder Elementals for last, though, as a BST 43 I found it slow to beat them and a pop made things very interesting.

I do believe that the part after "The rites of life" is "below the arks", mission briefing is : Something is afoot. Travel to the Grand Duke Palace to lean details of recent events. Go to the Guard's Post and talk to the Guards in there.

For anyone who is wondering, "The rites of life" and "Below the arks" are Promathia missions. The former is triggered by entering Delkfutt's Tower which is the only connection to BST AF I can see.

If you still have the Delkfutt Key from rank 4, you can take a shortcut up. In Lower Delkfutt's Tower, trade the key to the door in E-8. In the basement, go through the door in J-8. At the bottom of the stairs is a ???. Use it to take the elevator back to Porphyrion's room.

I soloed them at 40 without many problems, they are EP at that level giving 17-25 xp. The only real danger is getting linked. At this level a jug crab will last for 3 fights as long as you help it as much as possible, maybe taking a few hits.

A good place to camp is on the 10th floor right by the teleporter that goes down to the 9th. There are about 5 gigas spawns nearby and you can pull them back to your camp to avoid links. And if things do go badly wrong you have an escape route. (Note: if you get hit while trying to operate the teleporter it will interrupt the animation and stop it working >_<).
