Description

First, a few notes about Avatar in general fights. This is not the Trial Size quest, which is the solo fight, capped at level 20 (refer to Trial Size Trial by Ice for that quest). Everyone who is involved in the fight must have a tuning fork of the correct protocrystal. There is no cap on this battle, although there is a 30-minute time limit (not that it ever seems to be important).

General level guidelines: 60+ for melee and 55+ for mages. You’ll want a Black Mage for certain and a solid tank, but the rest is relatively flexible. A well-balanced party is critical, though. You’ll likely want at least 2 of the following 3: Red Mage, White Mage and Bard. You will want one of the melee or the Bard to be able to cast Bar-a spells. Having the WHM or BLM try to cast them will be problematic. Our strategy for this was to have the RDM sub WHM and melee using the appropriate En-spell for easy Bar-a casting. Additionally, if you can buy an Enhancing Torque (usually much cheaper than corresponding Torques), that will add 2-3 points of resistance to Bar-spells. Additionally Mal-rings (from the ghost NM’s in Gusgen Mines) can be helpful for the fight. You can buff up before entering the protocrystal, so feel free to do so and rest up while still outside.

Battle strategy for all six fights is pretty much the same. The battlefield layout for all six fights is exactly the same, although the coloration scheme for the battlefield will be different. The battlefield is shaped like a long path up the side of hill, with a switchback about halfway to the top. This topographical feature allows the mages to stand above the fight (and out of easy reach of the avatar) while still being able to cast spells upon the combatants. This allows for the tank(s) to have extra time to pull hate back should the mages draw it. It is ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL to keep the correct Bar-spell up at all times. Not doing this will result in multiple deaths when the Avatar’s 2-hour comes (at about halfway), and will likely produce a loss. Each avatar is also only easily susceptible to debuffs of the element they are weak to (i.e. Shiva can be Paralyzed). Whether they are susceptible to other enfeebles of very high level is not confirmed.

It is strongly recommended to fight each avatar on the day it is weak to (i.e. Shiva on Firesday) and even more strongly recommended NOT to fight the avatar on its day (i.e. Shiva on Iceday). Spells of each element are much stronger on their specific day of the week.

Each quest is repeatable, but only once per real life day. Once you have returned to the quest giver and gotten your reward, you have to wait 24 hours (some say midnight Japanese time) in order to get the quest again. At that point, you can get a new tuning fork. Each time you complete the quest, you can choose ONE reward from the list, which varies from avatar to avatar.

In order to get the Fenrir quest (The Moonlit Path), you have to have whispers (key items) from all six elemental avatars. This means that you can’t turn them in for reward until you have all six, at which point you can give them to the Fenrir quest giver (Leepe-Hoppe in Windurst Waters). So, in order to be able to get Fenrir and all six avatars, you’ll need to fight each of them at least twice. Additionally, if you are a Summoner, the Evoker’s Ring is only obtainable through the Mama Mia quest in Norg, which would mean you would have to fight them each a third time.

If you can’t get any of these quests, the problem is likely fame. Each quest giver is a taru who stands next to a non-taru warrior. If you don’t have sufficient fame, the taru will just complain about being hurt a lot while his companion will discuss perseverance and not giving up. If you have sufficient fame, the Tarutaru will give you the fork. The non-taru will give you a Trial Size Tuning Fork if you have met the requirements.

TRIAL BY WIND

To obtain the Wind Avatar Garuda, first speak of Agado-Pugado in Rabao. If you have sufficient fame, he will give you a tuning fork of wind (key item). Rabao fame is the same as that of Selbina, so any quest that ties to Selbina fame will help in Rabao. Selbina fame is a combination of Bastok, San D’oria and Selbina quests.

To use the fork, you need to travel to Cape Terrigan and find the Cloister of Gales. Travel to F-7 in Cape Terrigan and follow a tunnel off the map. This area is filled with very dangerous creatures such as manticores and high-level goblins – Sneak and Invisible are needed at all times, unless you want to fight a lot of very dangerous enemies who like to link. Take every left you can here, and you will eventually find the Cloister of Gales. Again, be very careful through here – the manticores and cockatrices are XP-fodder for high 60’s parties. This is the most dangerous walk of any of the avatar fights.

Try to fight Garuda on Iceday, and do not fight her on Windsday. Keep up Baraera at ALL times.

Once you defeat her, you will acquire the Key Item: Wind Whisper. Return it to Agado-Pugado for your reward, or hold onto it. If you have all six whispers simultaneously, you can give them to Leepe-Hoppe in Windurst Waters to gain the Moon Bauble – which is basically the Tuning Fork of the Moon – the ability to fight Fenrir. If you are collecting items for the Evoker’s Ring, you will want the Bubbly Water.

Just duo-ed Garuda as 74 RDM/WHM with my amoureux, a 75 BLU/NIN.

We went full-attack with few buffs (Baraera, Stoneskin, and Refresh on both of us). I Paralyzed her and then cast Blizzard III a couple of times before realizing that I'd forgotten to Chainspell like I'd intended, so I did and then kept nuking her.

She got Regen up at one point, so I dispelled that.

The BLU/NIN hit her with Hysteric Barrage, Frenetic Rip, and a couple of other strong BLU spells. He didn't bother with Breath spells.

We shared hate about evenly.

We had gone in very unprepared and very tired, which is why we died when she was nearly defeated. We got back up, though, and I finished her off with one last Blizzard III. (We both had reraise.)

Even with having to get back up, the fight was very, very short.

I chose as my reward a pact with Garuda, although I'm really not planning to level SMN any time soon. My man chose the gil, just out of curiosity as to how much it would be. VERY WEAK! It was 10k. I know it says that right on the rewards part of this page, but we hadn't looked first, so we didn't know. So we'll do the fight again some time to get the dagger for each of us. We'll go in more alert next time, and it will be cake.

I'm pretty sure a 75 war can't solo avatars. The only reason a lvl 20 smn can solo them is because they are mini fights and it's scaled down so they stand a chance.
Fighting Garuda [RDM/? solo]

What you need:
Warlock's Chapeau
Jack-o-lantern (+10 Acc, +10 Eva, +10 Racc) Marron Glace (+80ishMP, hMP)
Sword (almost any will do)
Shield (Reccomend Genbu's Shield or Tariqah(+4 Acc, +4 Eva))
Scorpion Harness or Narashima's Vest
Dark Staff (HQ' if possible)
Ice Staff (HQ if possible)
Ice Grip (not necessary)
MND+
and {Whatever Magic Attack Bonus gear you can get your hands on}

Spells you will use:
Phalanx I/II
Stoneskin
Protect IV
Shell IV
Utsusemi: Ichi or Blink (not necessary)
Utsusemi: Ni or Blink (not necessary)
Baraero
Bind
Haste
Refresh

Garuda is the only avatar I do not reccomend fighting in straight up melee. Why? Because of Whispering Wind. Being that the fight's always take nearly or more than 20 minutes to accomplish solo having the avatar healing itself for up to 1000 whenever it feels like is not necessarily a good thing. It legnthens the fight in a rather annoying way. My first try to solo her ended with me leaving the battlefield before comming up with this strategy:

Kiting Garuda:
If you've ever kited anything then this should be a breeze. Your subjob isnt as important here, in fact I usually choose to go /SCH for MP management. With this strategy you should almost never get hit and she should never 2hr (and if she does you'll be nowhere near it).

Have the above mentioned buffs on. If you are /mage, Blink will suffice over Utsusemi though neither is really necessary. Run up to her, Bind and throw our a Blizzard III. You can throw paralyze at her if you like. She is wind which is weak to Ice so Bind and Paralyze work on her. Run away as far as you can and watch your Bind and Blizzard recast. Haste is important here to help with recast timers. Once she is free, you will want to Bind again. If she becomes free during your retreat keep moving until Bind is ready. Follow Bind with another Blizzard III, rinse and repeat.

There will come a point where you will have to run past her and go back up the hill. You may take a hit or two but nothing to worry about you should have plenty of time to recast Stoneskin and/or Blink if you need to. Keeping this distance she will NOT use whispering wind or any of her other abilities. There is a chance she may use one as you pass her by but more often than not she'll take a few swipes at you.

You probably will need to convert more than once in this fight. Stoneskin up and keep your distance when you do. Resting is fine also as long as you have your distance to do so. This should usually takes me around 18-20 minutes. With more MAB and MP could be faster. I'm working with Elvaan MP so I have a small pool -.-

Do I need fame to do this or can I join a party going in to kill it and just get the summon?
fame?
# Nov 04 2008 at 7:15 AM Rating: Decent
You do need fame because each member of the party needs their own Tuning Fork of Wind to get in. You need Fame Level 6 in San d'Oria. The fork can be picked up in Rabao.

Duo'ed it with a warrior friend of mine, we went 75war/37nin and 65whm/32 blm. Took us two attempts, first time we didn't know about aerial blast and we had our guard down, caught him in between utsusemi's for 1664. Came back in, luckily this time he had all 3 shadows up and i have blink and stoneskin up for aerial blast, he took just over 800 damage through all three shadows and I took 99 through both my buffs. Total fight time 19 minutes 44 seconds, easy as cake with a little luck during her 2hr.

Me, Sakuraharuno and Mitsukai were doing the ZM5 with the Cermet thingies
but on the way through Cape Terrigan we got aggro so had to run for the cloister zone when we got inside i was joking around saying "Yeah lets do Garuda Prime"
so after we got Sakura their Frag we went to the Cloister and got ready
needless to say we kinda owned her with
61WHM(me) 70RDM(Sakura) 75NIN(Mits)
i just kept Mits HP topped up and kept haste on him and we did fine, Sakura didnt need to Convert and i didnt Drop below 100MP (my max is 624)
but the weird thing was it was Windsday and we all were expecting to die, but we didnt, also there is a spot up near the crystal that if you stand as a mage and the Tank fights down the spiral were you will not get hit with Garuda's 2HR but you can still land spells on the people down below, which on Windsday only did 150 to Sakura cant remember if they had Stoneskin up at the time, anyway will stop Babling on now, its easily Duoed by a 70RDM and 75NIN, i was just there for the ride,
Good luck to anyone aspiring to get Garuda
**edited** missed some info on the blind spot for Garuda's 2HR

My wife, Meowphttphtt, and I decided to try this by ourselves the other night just for fun. She went 75whm/37blm Mithra, I went 75pld/37nin Galka. Buffed up before hand, I used a Tav Taco for Def and MP and went at it. Man, Garuda IS one of the easiet avatars! At any given time, neither of us took more then 50 dmg, even on her two hour. The hard part was doing damage fast enough. She kept healing herself constantly. Once I decided to start using Spirits Within to take over 700+ per hit, it was cake. We finished her off with well over 5 minutes to spare. And just for the record, I had no "big ticket" equipment on. Just my Adaman, Company/Espadon+1, 3 yag drinks and the taco. Next time, I'd try an attack food for faster damage, maybe Carbonara for increased TP build up. Otherwise, a very fun fight. :)

Just thought I'd mention a couple of things.

First off, if you are a paladin, and you have Cover activated when Garuda uses her 2 hour, prepare to die. When Cover is activated, you will take nearly all AoE damage upon yourself, while your ward/party takes relatively little damage. My friend learned this the hard way when we were in Ifrit's Cauldron and got bomb aggro. Our PLD for the Garuda fight also had Cover activated and was promptly annihilated.

Second, I just wondered if anyone else had ever fought Garuda with add. effect weapons, especially ones with Add. Effect: Earth damage. When I fought Garuda on my Samurai (around Lv. 66-68), I was using the G.M. Uchigatana, and I used meditate 2 times before we engaged Garuda. After a few hits to reach 300% TP, I used SATA Tachi: Gekko. What proceded blew me away. First off, I did nearly 1k damage to Garuda; something I had been unable to do on other monsters at that point. Second, the add. effect: Stone proc'd on the WS. "Nothing too exciting," I thought when I saw the animation, until I read the log. It seems the add. effect: Stone did 100 points of damage. After the fight, I was going crazy in my LS telling them that A) I tanked Garuda (PLD went down from 2 hour, as mentioned before) and B) my add. effect: stone did 100 dmg.

I really wish I could have Screen shot that moment; that's the sucky part about playing on PS2. Anyway, just thought I'd share.

I'm not sure what your pld was subbing but i'm not surprised to see a pld/war be 1 shot in those situations. I am a 75 pld and have been killed by every avatar's 2 hr... But i have also solo'd 3 of them as pld/rdm so the dmg we take /war really blows.

you got lucky with the add't effect damage but it does decent damage. I solo the avatars (all but ramuh who i havent tried yet) as nin/rdm for the en spells and they often hit for about what my katanas do so im essentially almost doubling the dmg I deal its incredibly easy.

On my server, in certain circles, there's a misconception regarding the levels you need for this fight. People tend to insist that all the melee be over 65 "or you will die"...to counter this, I'm going to flatly state that all you really need is a decent group of 60+ and a BLM or RDM of 70 or higher.

A 61 DRK could and HAS tanked Garuda.
Higher levels just mean the battle will be a cakewalk instead of an adrenaline rush...frankly I like to be slightly challenged.

Two BLM for any of the avies is overkill...3 -4 RDM might also be called overkill (if you wondered how people get those record times, it's by bringing a lot of BLM or RDM and just laying it on).

Solod Garuda as 75mnk/37nin. I guess I got really lucky that everytime all my shadows were down, I either evade the attack or counter. Had to use Vile Elixir after she used 2H just to be safe.

Otus, Rabao fame is linked with Bastok fame. Raise your fame in bastok and your Rabao fame will increase too. THere is one quest great for this. You get it in Selbina from the guy standing in front of the Sheep pen. He asks for 3 items, one of them being Boyadha Moss. You can buy these from the AH or farm them in Pashow Marshlands. 2 or 3 stacks should be enough to raise your fame high enough to get fame to get the tuning fork in Rabao. This will also raise your San D'Oria fame too. The drop rate on the moss is pretty good if you have TH2 in Pashow so if you're strapped for gil you can farm them there.

I just tanked garuda prime as a 72whm/34rdm with the following setup : Me, 61sam/war, 73blm/whm, 54thf/nin, and a 50whm/blm.
It took us 13 min 21 sec, and the only death was the blm because between the 2 whms we didn't bene fast enough. Next time I'll be sure to bring a couple good ethers.
We went in and I slept to 125% tp with the opo-opo necklace, buffed and rested for 2 ticks, ran up and attempted to dispel.. It was resisted >.< so I pulled her down to the standard combat area and opened with hexa strike, icarus wing, and hexa strike to establish a bit of hate, and had the thf SATA/Hide onto me whenever hide was up, and whenever the Sam got hate.
She was hitting me for about 30-50 dmg with an add. effect of 7, with phalnyx up, with out 70-100 dmg and add. effect 170. Her 2hr hit me for 152, and after that the blm laid into her, hit off Manafont and took her down to 5% before he dropped ; ;
It was an odd setup, and I think the main reason we won was player skill and the blm "taking one for the team".
All in all it was one hell of a good fight, and I'd like to thank the following players from Seraph : Rajii (blm), Haz (thf), Midas (sam), and Aerianas (whm), for having the kahonas to attempt it. And of course all of SanctuaryOfFyre LS for the moral support </hurray> We Won!!!!

Party Level 60 is good enough

Little information is shared on what level of a party can defeat Garuda Prime. Some people say 60+ some say 65+. So this is how my party defeated her. First of attempt we went after her on Lightnings Day. My party consisted of PLD61/WAR30 RNG62/NIN31 WHM59/BLM29 RDM59/BLM29 BLM60/WHM30 and BRD60/WHM30. We had just completed the battle for Titan Prime and it went pretty smoothly, knowing she is weak to Ice our RDM had fun with Frost and Paralyze. Also the BLM was a little Freeze happy, needless to say hate management was an issue and most of us died. We elect to try again after our weakness fades. This time the BLM doesn't go Freeze happy, which is a good thing.

Important Buffs on the mages:
Blink
Stoneskin
BarAera
Wind Carol
Ballad II
Phalanx (RDM Only)
Shell II
Protect III
Refresh (If the RDM and PLD had it up)

Important Buffs on the Ranger:
Utsusumi
BarAera
Valor Minuet III
Hunter's Prelude
Shell II
Protect III

Important Buffs on the Paladin:
Protect III
Shell II
BarAera
Wind Carol
Ballad II
Refresh

This is how the battle went. We knew if we were going to win it'd be under 10 minutes, so we made sure all of the Mage's put up their Buffs. The Ranger pulled, and the Paladin Tanked. Pretty simple. RDM Debuffed with Slow, Paralyze, Dia II and Frost. BRD Debuffed with Foe's Requim V and Battlefield Elegy. At about 60% life left the mages put up their Stoneskin/Blink if it had faded. At 50% life Garuda did her 2hr, it does about 1200 or so points of damage and will hit anyone inside of range, so the mages hung outside of range and never got it. (They actually moved back when they realized it was about to happen) After the 2 hour, everyon healed the PLD and the RNG (The two people who got hit) PLD used invincible to keep hate from the healing, and the Ranger used Eagle Eye shot. From here on out the BLM went Nuke Happy, and the BRD tossed up Ice Threnody. Hate management almost became an issue again, but we had a good PLD who was healing the BLM to regain hate. She started to use Hasteaga and Blinkaga on herself so these were removed from the RDM and BRD. She had fun using various Aero spells. All and all, pretty simple fight but yes we did have to beat it with trial and error. The second attempt also landed on lightnings day, so it's not required to do it on Iceday. She did hit for about 70-100 a hit with an added affect of 100-150 that was wind damage.

Hope this information helps and Good Luck!

first off...im am varry lucky im friends with 2 lvl 75 snm's (me 49 rdm). they solo'ed all the avatars for me =). if fu want to know what they did then read the paragraph below.

they bolth used fenrir; one would use him first then they would use "blood pack ecliptic bite".when the first fenrir died the other would sick theres on the avatar. me being a rdm it comes natural to try do debuff/meele/nuck/and refresh. but i had to restran myself so all i did was refresh (helped out ALOT on the snm's). when the 2hour came around we all made shure to get the bar-aeroa up so didnt do too much. by the end of the battle the two snm's had varry low mp.

thank you for reading the "Exiting Supper 3 Person Stratigy" on defieting prime avatars. My name is Wal on the shiva surver...good night ^_^

Hey everyone,

I just beat Garuda and she wasn't as tough as everybody says. I just followed the 3 SL technic but my first one only did 100 dmg so had to melee her after, but the key is not to panic. So far I'm 1/1 Ifrit, 1/2 Titan, 1/1 Garuda and ummm 0/5 Ramuh <--- Bad ***.

I'll try him tonight.

You don't need a BLM, you simply need a high level RDM, or high level SMN absolutely owns these.
