Etiquete While Soloing: Why You Should Care

Vana'diel is a small world, and adventurers cross paths on an almost daily basis. Just as a player's reputation for being pleasant and skilled can open doors to great opportunities, a poor reputation can be very damaging to a player's life in this world.

As the game ages, soloing has become more commonplace. People often solo while farming, or while looking for parties. Jobs such as black mage, blue mage and puppetmaster have joined beastmaster as regular solo classes in the game. With more people soloing, it is more likely that you'll arrive at a camp to find it already taken, or that someone will try to move in on your prey. What do you?

It is possible to make great friends through soloing and duoing. However, poor, unethical decisions will have the opposite effect. It is important to recognize the unspoken rules of the road when you're out soloing.

What Are The Unspoken Rules?

A disclaimer: This list will not be 100 percent correct to everyone. However, after reading through countless forum posts on this subject over the past few years, these rules fit the concensus opinion of most FFXI players:

  • Never camp on top of other people, unless there are enough mobs for all parties to continue killing without having to wait for repops.
  • You are under no obligation to leave your camp if another soloist gets there after you, and there aren't enough mobs to support both of you. You were there first, so it is your camp.
  • Don't steal other people's mobs. Some people argue that it's impossible to steal a mob if it's unclaimed. However, it's extremely easy to tell when someone else is about to attack a mob. If a mob is about to be attacked, then move onto a different one.
  • Don't MPK other soloers. This includes killing beastmaster's potential pets, or casting DoT spells on slept mobs.
  • Use your Search Comment to let other soloers know where you're camping and what you're killing. Doing this could save another soloer the time and effort of coming all the way out to camp, only to find you already there.
  • Be courteous. Help other soloers when you can, and they may someday repay the favor.
  • /Anon and you. When soloing, please do not put up /anon. It makes it very hard for other soloers to determine whether or not a camp is taken by another person. If you are /anon, be prepared to have another person move in on your camp. Occasionally, the person will respect you and go find another camp, but there are those who believe that if someone goes /anon, they don't deserve the camp and will proceed to gimp the exp and leading to dangerous situations.
