About the Column

Written by Thayos of Garuda, The Weekly Refresh is a column meant to deliver commentary on the countless issues of Vana'diel. Please do not hold Allakhazam, Altana or anyone else responsible for anything this crazy Red Mage says. His views are his own. We're just the delivery moogles.

The Weekly Refresh, Sep. 10, 2008 Earth Time

I was in Port Windurst, and then I was nowhere, and suddenly I was on the snow-covered flats of Qufim Island.

A gigas layed dead at my feet.

The party that slew the beast was just breaking camp. I watched them wave goodbye to each other and warp away from the outpost, the same way I had come. A beastmaster and a warrior remained, fighting a crab with help from a leech.

I was here last night, fighting crabs and pugils with a group of linkshell mates. We were having the experience party we’d always wanted to have. New members, veteran members, linkshell founders, all side by side in the field of battle.

We ran inside the tower and started killing giants, roaming through the large room to the west. When none was left, we headed upstairs and hunted some more. There was me, a level 75 bard; two level 30 dancers; a level 25 black mage; a level 36 ninja and a 37 samurai. We had a blast.

Equally satisfying, though, was seeing the dust being blown off of that old camp. When I was a younger red mage -- around four years ago -- I remember partying in that exact same place. Sad thing is, I’d never been in a party that had camped there since, or even mentioned camping there.

Another party had been fighting outside the tower, and another party was farther into the island, killing pugils in the narrow rocky corridor.

Qufim is back.

So is Valkurm.

As I write this, I’m sitting in the southwest corner of Valkurm Dunes, where three parties of adventurers are doing battle with hill lizards. A taru named Tummie -- a samurai in the level 11 party next to me -- said his group’s real level range was 11 through 68.

More than 1,300 adventurers are in Vana’diel at this very moment, and nearly two thirds of them are not level 75.

Adventurers are going back to their old stomping grounds. They’re also exploring new camps, and they're trying new jobs.

More than the old camps are back.

The adventuring spirit has returned.
