Description

This enormous expanse of dunes can be found along the Bhefhel Gulf. While a majority of the surrounding coastline is too shallow for larger sea vessels, one natural harbor does exist. Near this harbor lies the independent port town of Selbina.[1]

I would just like to say that that is possible the best counter-post I have ever seen. I must agree with the "breathless recitation over the phone of how cool you are" statement. My friend John has a hand in that with his "Battlefield" skills. (;o.O)

Is English your first language? I'm not being mean, it is an honest question.

Your story is interesting, but cliffhangers are intentionally annoying. The only people who benefit from cliffhangers are the people who paid for advertising between parts of the story. It's not a good way to get your point across, and as a method of raising your karma, it is exceptionally annoying. Get a journal and use that, not the forum area. It is annoying and inappropriate.

In general, I would assume that as a lvl 12 THF using a bow, you probably missed and got your WHM killed. Bows are very hard to use, and it takes a long time. I know that if I had been that WHM, I would have been very annoyed if you had stopped to use a 7-second long attack (yes, that is how long it takes to equip a bow) instead of hitting the stupid goblin right after I had used Benediction. You have Perfect Dodge, why didn't you use that and start attacking?

Overall, your story sounded more like a breathless recitation over the phone of how cool you are. I get more than enough of that from my own friends to really care about yours. Again, I suggest you get a journal somewhere and share your stories there where an audience can find you instead of forcing us to participate in your ego-boosting on the regular forums. Your sentence structure is poor, your pacing is off, and your lack of appropriate formatting made the story hard to read.

Never ask for opinions if you aren't willing to take the negative ones along with the positive ones.

This place is damn good for level 10-20. Just some tipswhen you are making a party:

1. Have 2 WHM's. Not more and not less. Be sure they have good skills and good MP.

2. Have minimum 2 provokers.

3. Try as hard as you can to get people with SJ's (sub-jobs).

4. When you find it ard finding a member at Valkrum Dunes with a flag, type /sea Region (Your level range).

Example: /sea region 10-13.

5. Try to make the level gap as small as possible and ask the highest level player[s] how much Exp TNL (To Next Level) they have.

6. Try getting members that speak the same Language as you do, or you will just have to stick with Auto-Translating.

Well, hope that helped. Bye!

Let me start by saying I was scared to death of the Dunes. To get there from Windy you got to go through Bubruim(?sp)and the goblins were aggro mad there. I had a high lvl escort me there. Then the my first boat ride to Selbina. Careful here the high lvl went up on deck and I knew better from web research that the boats get attacked. The giant octopus looking thing came on board and Killed me and the (medium) high lvl before I could run to the hold. 30th lvl is not so big when compared to the Craken thing. We both lvled down.

After getting to the Dunes This 30th lvl friend Mikel on Phoenix server got me my sub job items in (LESS THAN AN HOUR) Awesome!

Then My first Dune party. Lvled back up quick and my RDM got kicked for a blk of thier lvl. NP.

Got snatched immediately by another higher group.
Everyone went up a lvl in the next 1-2 hours. GREAT Group lead by Omegaknight(pld) great puller. Shadowfox(whm)

We aggroed one bogey but zoned. No Deaths since boat. 1600 TSJ thats ( till sub job) Yeah!

See you in the Dunes!
Ghouls
# May 05 2004 at 2:34 AM Rating: Default
A note to the earlier FF players: DON'T CURE GHOULS. It does very little damage and your party needs that MP for healing. Just got out of a party where we all died because some idiot thought it would be cool to nuke the ghoul with Cure II.
RE: Ghouls
# May 05 2004 at 3:22 PM Rating: Decent
As a level 29 PLD I find it very effective to cure the ghouls, I would not reccomend it to a whm under level 35 though unless they have a high defense boost from a subjob. Holy circle also helps alot... If you are a War/whm level 25 or above, cure 2 will serve as an effective damage dealer, but not if you need it for yourself...

Just use discretion.

Just a note... if you have high divine magic skill, Banish works better than cure... something to keep in mind.

Versus undead, it can vary greatly. If I remember right, I saw a WHM cast Holy on a Banshee once for something around 150 damage, then Cure IVed the same Banshee for 300 some damage. Not really a Ghoul story, but the same basic idea of White magic spells vs. undead...

Hmmm... I was reffering [generally] to Paladins. A WHM will 99% of the time have a higher healing skill than a PLD. Likewise 99% of the time a good Paladin will have a higher divine magic skill. Paladins have the highest divine magic magic skill in the game whereas our healing ability id rated at a 'B' level if I remember correctly.

The point is, as I said in my original post, IF the player has a high divine magic skill Divine WILL do more damage than Healing. It is all depepndent on the individual skill levels of the character. But since Divine magic is offensive, it will do more damage than a healing magic spell on the same scale.

Just wanted to clear this up.

Can anyone tell me how to do it?

Goblins.. to kill or not to kill.. that is the question
# Apr 30 2004 at 8:29 AM Rating: Decent
quick question for ya'll. I've been to the dunes only once and my our leader along with all my other party members said to avoid Goblins at all costs. Now I admit I haven't played as long as any of them, but I'm not a noob to the whole FF bit. They said the goblins in these parts are worse than the large rams that appear in the highlands at times. Now being a lvl 11 WHM, I'm in no rush to gank anything larger than me and more intimating than me without thinking ahead O_o; (which is pretty much any monster I run across). I guess I am asking with a party ranging from 11-14 could you take down one of these baddies? Thanks!

Butcher,Thinkerer and emm, Gambler I think are lvl 10-20,others are 20-30... carefull; you may take Tough ones, but the problem with Inc. tough ones is that, being lvl 11, a Inc. Tough could be lvl 14, which is ok, or 20, which would own your party !!!

they all drop bombs which deals pretty nasty damage to everyone near it for your level, so standard practice is for casters(being the delicate little flowers that they are) to stand further away so they are just within range to cast their spells, gamblers and leechers also cast nasty stuff so silencing them when u get silence is highly recommended.

the sheeps in dunes can be nasty since they do AOE sleep so ur whole party falls asleep and then it attacks ur member one by one so dont mistakenly think the sheeps in dunes are as easy as their cousins near town
RE: Goblins.. to kill or not to kill.. that is the question

Hehehe just try for a level 15 pld in the dunes for the harder gobs... they can use shield bash which stops the bombs... ^^

Personal Note: I had fun partying here as a pld lv 12-17, especially after cure 2.

I was here last night with 13WAR (me), 12RDM, 12WHM, 12MNK and a 14WAR, and we camped at the entrance from La Theine and killed Goblins for a while, and at over 180 exp each kill I wasn't complaining. The goblins were a little tough but as long as you have faith in your healer (Kastor->best WHM I've seen) you should be fine, just watch out for bomb toss, it can be kind of scary. Anyways, don't listen to all these people telling you to aviod this place, it is a great spot to camp with a good group. Happy hunting!
Death sands of Vanadiel
# Apr 27 2004 at 4:06 PM Rating: Excellent
Dunes has a higher rate of death, for any place in the entire game, aside from maybe those attempting the Maat fight at lvl 70. To be honest, Noobs are noobs are noobs, and every single one of them doesnt know how to listen.

Here is a strong word of advice if you want to live through tomorrow in the dunes:

1) Know your macros inside and out, (Take the time you impatient punks)
2) Get some gil so you have the best armor and spells for your lvl and for 2 lvls ahead of you.
3) Get a map, dont be stingy now, better to stay alive knowing where you are going.
4) check your party members, if any have subjobs and you dont, listen to them.
5) Also check rank, if they are higher then you, listen to them.
6) Listen carefully to instructions and dont be surprised if your rank 6 whm disbands before you die because you were stupid.

Do all this and things will go smoothly, and please flame the hell out of me, because that will prove how noob you are, and how much you dont listen.

FYI:: I died over 20 times in Pal mines which forced me to know how to party before lvl 13. That is how you learn.

O.o;
I did the exact same thing... I swear it took me a month to get to the dunes as a level 15 WAR, but I never had a hard time there, I always kinda took leadership of the parties I was in and no one ever died or anything. Could also have been that about 4 of us were semi static members from level 5-20 but from 5-13 we died about 5-10 times a day ; ;
Agreed though, that if you take your time and actually play the game, you will end up being a better [insert your job title here] for it.

Wow. You don't have to be so offencife[sp?]. One tip to everyone: Just because someone is lower level than you, doesn't mean you are better than him. Yes there is more chance, but there still 'is' a chance that he could be WAY better than you. I, myself, saw a level 10 with an Astral Ring. How can you explain that?
Plus, I myself with my own two Hume eyes say a level 60 with 'no' Sub Job, and I am 100% sure. Trust me.
Please stop picking on other people and show off as if your the man or something and know everything. Ugh...

equipment is not skill. both are needed. i believe the point being made was too many people starting out, especially NA players, have a severe lack of respect when it comes to learning from more experienced players. Through this site I know a lot about the game, and people in my LS depend on that knowledge. Does that make me better or worse than them? Does it make them less than me for asking information and specifics?
I do agree with your angst about the offensive tone, but I've been there and lost my temper due to people in the dunes.

Leveling
# Mar 30 2004 at 1:22 PM Rating: Decent
1. Most people come to Valkurm ranging from levels 10-13 and start killing Hill Lizards. From experience, i believe that Soloing until lvl 13 is best, unless you are in a great party.
2. From lvl 14-15 most Hill Lizards will con Tough, or Even Match, some people prefer to keep chaining them for 40-60 experience each.
3. 15-17 Snippers definitely, you will need at least one blackmage and preferably two, or a strong redmage, as Snippers have incredibly hard armor, and have special abilities that increase their armor, and can lower your strength by 6-7 points.
4. Lvl 17-19 is pretty hard and awkward. Snippers mostly con T, a few VTs, and Damselflies (Very bad area effect attack/Poison) con T all the way to IT. Some people prefer to keep chaining T snippers for less downtime, while others believe killing Goblin Leechers, Muggers, Tinkerers etc for more downtime but excellent expereince is enjoyable.
5. Judging by your party, and how efficient/strong it is(Lots of redmages/blackmages preferable again) You can start chaining from T snippers to VT/IT Pugils from 19-21+. Pugils have an attack "Screwdriver" that hits from as low as 30-40 dmg to as high as 280 damage.

End of your Valkurm Journey....Head on to Jeuno and Qufim(is a hellhole) =)

I completely disagree on the 'rely on dual mage nuke when Snippers put up their defenses' statement. That will only cause the snipper to run around like crazy hitting the mages (who also can't do a whole lot of damage since Blizzard is a Level 17 spell and Thunder is ages away).

Just keep hitting the thing (and keep Dia/Bio up on it). The crab won't do that much damage and you'll build tons of TP. A single mage attacking it with spells should be sufficient over time to kill it without pulling all the hate away from your tank.

That said Valkrum is either the best place to level to 19 or the worst, depending on how popular the zone is. The trouble is that noobie parties from all three nation cities like to converge here, leading to insane situations where there are four parties on every beach and a dozen others scattered throughout the zone, substantially depleting the mobs there and leading to a ton of corpses (since this really is the first place you're forced to learn to effectively form and manage parties).

Alternatives to this area are Korroloka Tunnel or Burimuru Peninsula. After going through the Valkrum trials twice, I would only ever again come here only if you have to finish the subjob quest for a second account.

When he said it's good to have two blm's I don't think he meant the rest of the party just chills under the trees watching the fight. And I don't see how if there are two black mages that guarantees that they will overnuke creating too much hate. He's just saying black mages are strongest against clippers because of their high defense. Of course a group of all blackmages probably wouldn't work at all. But skillchains with double MB's are sweet.Smiley: waycool

On a side note I'm curious as to why people from windurst travel to the dunes and don't fight in burimuru. The place is beastmen control on my server. I found that surprising. But I'm from bastok so I might just be clueless on how good/bad burimuru is. Smiley: confused

Windurst people travel to Valkrum for only one real reason: The subjob quest from Selbina is leagues easier to do than the subjob quest from Mhaura. The comparision is the infernal 'third item' you need to complete the quest. For the selbina quest the mob to kill is the Ghoul, which is commensurate in level for a party fighting pugils/gobs from the beaches in Valkrum (and are in plenty supply in Gusgen Mines to boot). For the Mhaura quest the mob to kill is the Bogy, even one of which will easily overwhelm an entire party of level 20-25 players.

Easier quest for subjob = all the nation cities converge on Valkrum up to level 19.

There's nothing really wrong with Buburimu Peninsula. The Sylvestres/Bunnies/dhalmels are great to fight to 16-17, and the crabs/pugs/gobs will just as easily get you to 19 or 20. I've heard it said that people are afraid of the linking mobs on Buburimu (notably the crawlers and the bunnies), but I usually slap them silly and call them cowards. You can't get anywhere in this game if you refuse to fight mobs that link.

I was in the dunes for the first time and got a party quickly. We were all level 10 and didn't have too much problems as longs as we avoided the goblins. Pretty good experience clocking in over 100 per fight against the lizards. Though I would definetely recommend having a solid team with lots of heals. Ours had 2 RDM, 1 WHM, 1BLM/WHM, 1 WAR, and 1 SAM/THF. Worked very well.

I was able to find a party here with little wait as a level 10 BLM, and stayed til 19. However, the experience wasn't all that grand at the early stages, mainly because the lizards linked a lot which equaled deaths. I think I got better exp going to Palborough til level ~13.

However, it will feel wonderful to come back at level 35+ and beat the living crap out of things and get revenge on that certain Goblin Mugger that smacked you from behind.

Hit the Maze of Shakhrami... Works great from lv12 or so up with Maze Makers, take out a few gobs at higher levels or quick chain the Maze Makers. Once you hit lv17 or so you can go crazy with the Makers or try to take a Carnivorous Crawler, but the group must be somewhat good and prepared for this... Other than that not sure... I hate the Dunes and prefer this place...

The blindingly white sands of Valkurm greet adventurers from all over the continent of Quon, as well as those who arrived from Mhaura via Ferry to the small port town of Selbina.

Sparkling blue waters and palm-filled oases accent the beaches, where sea life like the crabby Snippers, gar-like Pugils, and Thread Leeches wander about, amidst the Hill Lizards, Sand Hares, Damselflies and camps of Goblins. Along the western beach a powerful Damselfly can sometimes be found, named the Valkurm Emporer for its majesty.

There are a number of caves found in the exposed bedrock of the area in which various species of Bat can be found, and through which hidden areas can be discovered. Beginning adventurers from Bastok should be especially wary, as Sand Bats lurk in a narrow cave that separates them from the majority of the Dunes, and their aggressive nature has spelled defeat for lone lower leveled travelers.

At nighttime, however, the Dunes take a turn for the worse, menaced by Undead such as the haunting Bogys and magicked Ghouls. During this time various bats too will appear from their diurnal hiding places.

This is not the only place for ghouls. If by some chance you have not got the skull by 16 to 17 head to Gusgen mines and kill the shat out of ghouls for days. Inside of the mines there is no day. We hade so many skulls drop in here it was ridiculous. I was in a party of 16-18 and were cleaning house 4 people needed skulls and we got them in about 30 min. (make sure someone has map.) Oh and go there sooner if you love killing all maner of undead though you will need a very experienced group to break up the spawn times for some of the rooms. High agro radius.

at lvl 50 with thf sub, I killed well over 30 ghouls looking for skulls, after about 100 I think we got the 4 skulls we needed.

(luckily I got to do this before the TP fix)
NOT the only place for ghouls.
