Description

During the Great War, the armies of Altana, led by the first order of the Royal Knights of San d'Oria, reconstructed this underground fortress in hopes of taking the beastmen armies in Sauromugue by surprise. Outfitted with hundreds of troops from all three nations, the forces of Altana were successful in their attacks on the beastmen--until an enemy unit discovered a secret entrance to the citadel. This miscalculation resulted in the slaughter of all within the fortress, dealing a severe blow to the allied forces.

Points of Interest

  • The Citadel requires a minimum of four adventurers in order to travel through the three Banishing Gates. Four switches must be triggered in order for the door to open.
  • Windurst adventurers know that Garlaige Citadel is home to the Incinerator, as an Orastery quest leads them to it.

The Map of Garlaige Citadel can be purchased for 3,000 gil.

i never went to garlaige with my rdm. i got a static pt & went strait to east altepa. we were lvl 31-32. spiders were already T or EM so we jumped right to beetles, from there move to dhalmel, then when dhalmel get to be VT move to west altepa & take either spiders or antican essedarius. anticans are easier imo despite the petrification. at 35-36 we went to crawlers nest & you'll stay there for a while.
Anywhere else?

I like this place alot. Everyone I have talked to has said i'm crazy but I like it alot better than Yhoator Jungle. If you get into good parties you can easily level here until 37....which I did last night :D.

Yea if you're not getting so many party invites I would recommend you to not have an underleveled sub job... I'm not going to discuss your sub preference even though /blm or /whm is more useful... Remember you are a red MAGE. :P

banishing gates
# Jul 08 2004 at 9:39 AM Rating: Decent
Ok, I've seen a few posts about the banishing gates, but no good descriptions. I know you need other players, some say 3 some say4, to open these gates so you can get through. I know you can't get to the monument in Sauromugue Champaign or find the coffers without getting through some of these gates. What I don't know is the location of the gates or the procedure for getting through them. Any help would be appreciated.
RE: banishing gates
# Jul 08 2004 at 10:23 AM Rating: Decent
Ok, so I'm replying to my own post, but here's what I found out so far.

Banishing gates have 4 platforms in front of them. All of the platforms have to be pushed at the same time by standing on them to open the gate. So you need at least a party of 4 to open them.

Once opened, the gate only stays open for about 1 min, and they cannot be opened from the other side if they close.

Gate #1 is located at (I-9) of the first map, don't fall in any of the holes. Southeast corner.

Once you pass through the first gate you are on a new map, where coffers spawn. They can be found in the northeast section, in a hidden tunnel that is not marked on the map. These postions are just estimates, but coffers might be found around (I-7), (I-5), and (G-5). There are treasure maps somewhere that show the exact spots.

I'm currently still searching for the other gates and the path to the stone monument in Sauromugue Champaign, but my party got jacked because someone agged too many bats. ~arg

There are NO coffers that you can get in that "area", because gate #1 leads to gate #3. All the coffers are behind gate #3, and so is the zone to Sauromugue Champaign for the tablet. The locations of the coffers are accurate, only that to get to them, as I said, you need to go past gate #3 (sneak up before or you'll get aggrod).

Speaking of the stone monument in Saramogue. Anyone on Siren server care to help me retrieve this? I hear it give you 10k as a reward, as well as the Batallia Downs monument (on the island at K-10, You must travel through Eldieme to reach it, and deal with Ahtu when you get there)

Anyway, if some people would care to help, I'll pay 1.5k to each person who assists with it.

/tell Dranoface anytime on Siren server if you will help me to retrieve this tablet.

I'm guess it is past B-Gate 3 in that T corridor.

And just for future reference people, there are 3 coffers behind gate 3, and 4 behind gate 2. Whoever has been saying that they are all behind gate 3 has no idea what they are talking about.
RE: banishing gates
# Jul 08 2004 at 10:06 AM Rating: Decent
You need 4 people total, or three other players. As for the locations let me try and help you out.
Head down the stairs then when you come to a _|_ in the bottom of stairs take a left pass some holes. After that keep heading straight, and there will be a bend in the road stay left and keep going. You should pass about two more holes in the floor spots and pass a _|_ decision, and come up to another _|_ decision (There are normally 2 revenants that are straight ahead) Just take a right and the revenants will not aggro. Then head over one more set of holes and the gate will be on your next left. I do not have a map of this place, although I should buy one but that is pretty good way to get there. Also might want invis for beetles, nothing else should be in your way to the first gate that aggros. If there was, it was chained or you took a wrong turn.

Great Place ... long waits

Great Place to lvl if you have a good party. Sometimes, you may wait a long time for a party or waste time looking for members when people leave. But once you get a party going, great exp.

I was partying in there other day, (33RNG/NIN) w/ nin/rng, rdm/whm, rdm/war, thf/nin, war/mnk. We got over 4kxp in an hour. Then a friend of the nin/rng (73whm/blm) PLed us. We were pulling bats like crazy. They make me pull when mob has 1/3 health left. If there was link, whm would take them out. everyone lvled up twice. Great place w/ great pt.

Its best to setup a party in Jeuno before heading out there. You may wait for hours waiting for a pt.

This place is the best for a lvl 33 blm like myself. The Seige Bats give about a good 200 xp and they chain so easy. Yesterday I was in a good group, Redmage, Pally, Whm, me (blm), War, and a Ranger. We were chaining up to 4 or 5 and then would do a full rest. By the second chain we were already getting about 200+ Xp. Too bad I am still in school or else I would be there tryin to get a party. I got about 2K in about 10 minutes. It was great. Anyway back to work before this dumb C++ teacher says something.

Garlaige Citadel is a death trap. Due to it's lag, overcrowded, and trains of bats and beetles, and people falling through the floors then fleeing back to the entrance. Mass exodus and death.

If your willing to put in the work, level up in the East Altepa Desert, near the first entrance to quicksand gaves. Nice room, zone, no one there and pull anticans and beetles til your 34.

Otherwise, go to Norg and pull crabs right at the entrance. Also another choice spot.

Thing is most people aren't willing to do the work and travel to better spots, so alot of cursing and death ensures at Garliage.
Level 31 concerns
# May 19 2004 at 4:47 PM Rating: Decent
At level 31 contemplate going to Sea Serpents Grotto near the Norg zone and Pull crabs and Skelletons, good exp till u hit 33. Rarely a party there and a nice zone to norg if Danger occurs
Missing the key ingredient
# May 19 2004 at 1:29 PM Rating: Default
I notice that this chain of thoughts is missing the key ingredient to surviving the Citadel: The Noble Paladin.

Being a pally myself I have yet to witness a Nin, Rng or Drk tank effectively without the mage having to strain for mp to save the party. I've defended many pty's always holding aggro on the Siege Bats and Beetles without falter. The result is less healing, kneeling, downtimes or as of recent unecessary deaths from noob trains (invc for pty to flee).

Advice #1
Before stepping into the Citadel at 32 (recommended) I suggest u befriend a pally. You'd be surprised how much free time you would have to execute renkai's for those quick and rewarding exp.

Advice #2
Never use light dmg dealers (i.e. Shiny Blade, Banish, Dia) in the Citadel. Too many noobs have been adding MP to thier near kills costing thier pty's lives due to this clueless move.

Advice#3
Stay by the first two teres of steps from 32-37, Aviod the cross path (unless ur pulling) and holes in the floor. Should u happen to inadvertently fall into one of them, do one of two things. Pray::as about 10 beetles now train on you or use a warp scroll.

So where's the best place to lvl at when you're a lvl 31 taru blm? The citadel or Altepa?

At 31 you're taking a lot of risks by attempting garliage. The tight conditions and continuing habits of people to train things to the entrance there (it isn't necessary guys! Your BLM should have Escape!) can liquefy a party below the level of 33 the second something goes wrong.

Maybe as a mage you can get a pass and get invited to a party there at 31, but I found that I wasn't going there regularly until I hit 34.
there's gotta be another way

been here twice trying to lvl my rdm(33). it is such a slow progress(zoning all the time)there must be a better alternative to go to lvl up before going to the crawler's nest. Any suggestions?

If you're always zoning at 33 then either your parties are ill-formed or your pullers aren't doing their jobs. A functioning party at that that level should be getting 200-240 experience point chains from beetles and siege bats. The only reason to zone is if you link wingrats to a siege bat or if you link more than two beetles. As a 33 RDM your enfeebling should be more than enough to keep a linked siege rat or beetle asleep long enough for your party to dispatch of his awake friend.

Ninjas appear to be the tank of choice in this zone, and if you find a SMN with Garuda your job become substantially easier.

Failing that, FIND ANOTHER ZONE. This isn't the only zone with mobs a party of 33-35 can take and still get XP. On top of that, this zone has very few workable camps for parties at your level (most people just bunch up by the entrance tunnel which is hazardous).
go sooner
# Mar 15 2004 at 4:30 PM Rating: Default
o.k.
i leveled in yhoator jungle until level 30. then i went to Garliage Citadel. While there i never went passed the holes except to pull a mob.
Stay at garliage until about level 36 then go to crawlers nest.
there is no reason to go to Garliage any later then that.

If the entrance is a bit crowded and you're having trouble finding things to pull then set up camp by the first banishing gate(But do NOT go through it) This is located at the bottom right hand corner of the map and you'll need to have a mage cast sneak so you can get to it safely. Here you can pull siege bats and beetles. Enemies do spawn in this room, but you should be out of aggro range if you stay by the door.

If your party is good you'll get the exp flowing MUCH better here where there is no competition for the spawns. Though if your party is bad you'll have nowhere to zone if there is trouble :) (Although a black mage can save the day with escape)
which first?

A level 34 party could actualy go here as long as they stay near the exit of the citadel and pull citadel bats and beetles. If the party tries to go any further into the citadel below lev 40, they will find this place very difficult and will most likely get everyone killed.
A word of caution
# Jan 20 2004 at 12:36 AM Rating: Default
If you are a low level, the bats you want aren't the Citadel Bats. You will want to start with Siege Bats and Wingrats.
RE: A word of caution
# Feb 24 2004 at 4:56 AM Rating: Default
no Wingrats! they have jet stream = DEATH!
RE: A word of caution
# Feb 26 2004 at 12:55 AM Rating: Decent
The above poster was correct! My party took on Wingrats. Jet Stream hit our 35 TaruTaru WHM for 450 damage or so, instantly killing her. Without a WHM, two more people died before we could kill that stupid bat(s).

Also, I'd like to say that there are numerous bat trains here. All the bats link, and jumping down a level does NOT help you escape. I watched a guy do this. The two wingrats caught up to him, but were also joined by another wingrats, two siege bats, and a citadel bat. Wiped out an entire party, there was no one remaining to call for raise. And yes, that party was my party.

Honestly, there's a ton of specials that can nail taru WHMs in one shot. Hell, a Giant Lobber range attack can do the trick if you're unlucky.

Your party didn't manage hate well enough, in good parties the WHM shouldn't get hit at all. Telling people not to fight bats because of your party's failing is not good advice.

<--- Sorry if I offended Taru Tarus, but what I said was true, no need to mod me down out of spite.
