Description

During the Great War, the armies of Altana, led by the first order of the Royal Knights of San d'Oria, reconstructed this underground fortress in hopes of taking the beastmen armies in Sauromugue by surprise. Outfitted with hundreds of troops from all three nations, the forces of Altana were successful in their attacks on the beastmen--until an enemy unit discovered a secret entrance to the citadel. This miscalculation resulted in the slaughter of all within the fortress, dealing a severe blow to the allied forces.

Points of Interest

  • The Citadel requires a minimum of four adventurers in order to travel through the three Banishing Gates. Four switches must be triggered in order for the door to open.
  • Windurst adventurers know that Garlaige Citadel is home to the Incinerator, as an Orastery quest leads them to it.

Maps

The Map of Garlaige Citadel can be purchased for 3,000 gil.

It's been a while since I was here, but I always wondered about the ???s up in the air above some areas, I remember a few. There was one right above the camp near the entrance where the beetle pops, but it's still a good camp because you don't get hit by trains. What are they for?

How do you get to the chest that sometimes appears in the basement on that plateau? Just curious...

Go to the bottom right corner of G-8 on the first map when you enter from Sauromugue Champaign. The hole is in the middle of the hallway. You will be able to see the chest from the hole if it's on the plateau.

I remeber my first time here, and it totally sucked. Assuming you start here at lvl 32, the lowest mobs are 8, count 8, lvls higher than you. I don't remember what the downtime was like, but i don't imagine its very good. Add to that the fact that the space is very tight, and on a busy night there's barely any room for anyone. Some of the less populated camps almost guarantee links. And lets not forget the constant trains that force your party to zone and wait five minutes for the mobs to leave. And this is the best-case scenario, as sometimes you entire pt gets wasted by a ghost or a flock of bats.

So why party here? DON'T.

Go to the Sea Serpent Grotto. Look at some of the options:

Ironshell (crab): 37-40
Big Jaw (fish): 37-39
Lake Sahagin: 36-39
Pond Sahagin: 36-39
Spring Sahagin: 36-39
Undead Bats: 36-39

These are perfect for a pt fresh out of Yhoator Jungle. I plan on casing the Grotto and looking for a good camping spot, but off the top of my head i imagine that both the Norg and Yuhtunga Jungle zones would make good camps. Also, i've never xp'ed off Sahagins, so i don't know how difficult they are, but i imagine they're about the same, if not easier, as a goblin of the same lvl. Crabs are choice xp, since they are easy, and their AOE attack can be effectively nullified by Barwatera, and they can be Aspired from. Of course, a RDM with dispel is recommended.

So, why put yourself through the hell of Garlaige Citadel? It's not worth it when you can go to safer, move productive areas. You may not get 200 xp per kill, but i can promise you, you'll get more xp per hr at the Grotto than at the Citadel.

Sahagins are pretty tough. They use Hydroshot frequently, which causes whoever is hit by it to lose hate.

Although it's true that Garlaige completely sucks at 32, I, and many other players, most definately can't say your recommendation is well-researched.

No, at level 32, you will not have a great time at Garlaige Citadel. Mostly because the recommended level is 35 and up, not 32. And, with a well-dynamic'd party, doing 200xp with almost no downtime is a bit of a struggle and a carefully balanced feat, and easily tipped, but incredibly well worth the effort. Especially if you're careful and/or smart enough to stay near the zone, or at least know a well-planned escape route with the proper timing to be able to get from point A to Zone Point, before taking a lethal dosage of damage. Or, at the very least, have your WHM cast Reraise.

It is, however, horribly obvious that there are more than one place in the game to level at a certaint level. That, if nothing else, is what most Japanese players depend on. To find their own area to play at, so they don't have to deal with the "stupid American players". So don't go off pretending like you're smart or cool because you know of another place to level. Much more, do your homework. If you'd've gone at 35, it'd've been hellish still, but definately do-able. Not to mention, hell-holes like Garlaige help the less mature players be a bit more refined and skilled. Take 'that' into account as well.

Im just curious... are you saying never pt here? or are you sayin dont go until you're a higher level than like 35? But if i do go To Sea Serpent Grotto im gonna have to have some descriptive directions to get back to Kazham...or maybe ill just Set my HP in Kazham, then Go into Norg change job to a level 1 and take on an Ironshell lol.

well i started here very low as 30 cos i was told my some lvl 75 everything guy it was time to leave kazham
so there i am waitin for party..still waitin..waiting still
finally make my own party with
32pld/16war (died 1 time)(v good player)
31smn/15whm (died 2 times)
30war/15whm <-----me (died 4 times)
32whm/16blm (died 2 times)
31mnk/15nin
32drk/16mnk

didnt help that i was pulling but i started on 1900xp and after many a kill and been kill i was on 1919..3 hours for 19xp?? hmmmmmm

so i hate this place its horrid makes kazham look like a walk in the country..

i was unlucky you gott be careful where you camp as bats seem to like to spawn on your head while you are tanking..notice the PLURAL in bats yes i didnt stand a chance..but each fight was 200xp a time but that properly drains all mp and hp leaving you with 5hp and a temptation to disequip your +7hp trousers to see what happens

but over all it could be worse
RE: urghhh
# Apr 20 2005 at 8:36 PM Rating: Decent
WOW so sorry to hear about your pain......
Maybe this will be a good opportunity to pass along some advice to those thinking of comming here to exp.

For MAGES LVL 30-31 is absolutely fine...ur not tanking anything and if(in a rare chance) you are able to get ur melee on you can get some decent skill up, same for magic skill ups, may not land as often but you will get a bigger skill up when they do.

For TANKS 32-34 is recommended for this fabulous place. First thing you end up fighting are bats...and they sukk. A lvl30 tank can get chomped on rather easily if the PT isn't on the ball. As you have sadly stated. The extra HP, and stats added by those two lvls are good enough to keep you alive.

For MELEE 31-32 is good. THF will alrady have SATA and be getting VIPER BITE shortly after. Most RNGs, DRKs and DRGs do well here in regard to dealing DMG.

Hope that helps those that are anxious to get out of the heat of the jungles but aren't in a hurry to gain that 19EXP due to being misled/hasty.

Hope it helps!!

Party skill and your ability to move as a group is a major part of being able to survive here. That, and a good 75% of party deaths are caused by bad pulls. Stupid pullers are a plague to this game. I get it all the time. I'll say, "Don't pull" 3 minutes in advance, and then I see "Whoops" and a pull macro. It's really, really stupid.

This is a place where you probably want to know the players you're dealing with. You either rock here, or you get screwed and go through slowly. Me? I lost 3 levels from a retarded party in Kazham, but I went through here in 2 days, and Valkurm in a day.

My First Time..
# Jan 14 2005 at 5:53 AM Rating: Decent
Last night was my real first time here.

Ya know what, compared to my time in Yhoater Jungle..This place is really A piece of cake. I finally got to lvl 32 In Yhoater, and when I went here...I was just a lil low, so I made a party By myself

Whm/blm<---Me
Brd/whm
Smn/whm
Sam/war
Nin/whm<---Was actually a pretty good player
Thf/war

This was a really good party, (( Me the whm hardly ever got hit!))
But...

Someone opened a gate..

I had just turned 33 and had 700xp already... So Just like me I use my reraise scroll and cast it on me. 5 min later...A huge Swarm of only Citadel Bats comes up the stairs. Everyone who was pt'ing there died. Then Here I am...I am raised automaticly and I Cure III myself and walk out the front zone by quickly running between the bats..It was so funny...

But yea... I have had a good time here so far, and I have only died once ^.^

Get used to that. That's the main reason that lots of people absolutely despise that place. The exp is good. The mobs are easy even with a mediocre setup; you don't have to be all perfect with party arrangement. There are invariably going to be nasty, horrible, death causing trains.

There are lots of quests and junk required of higher levels deeper in the citadel. Often, they'll try to solo quests or try them with inadequate setups. When things go wrong, they head for the zone. Citadel bats or worse, funnel bats, come up regularly. You'll even get the occasional Fallen Mage (not sure if that's the right name) or ghost type. On a good night you may not have to zone once. On a bad night, the trains are almost constant.

A hi-lev zoned a ghost one night and then took of as soon as s/he was out of zone. Needless to say, every last one of us 32-35 peeps had to zone and camp out in that little hallway on the outside. The ghost was staying next to zone because people would get impatient and try to go in. They'd come back out seconds later with red hp, but they had drawn the ghost back to zone. There were about 20 of us camped out in that little area until a 50ish pally came to enter and after hearing the story offered to tank it for us. Pally went in first, and we all followed (i was WHM at the time) to gang up on the ghostie. It went off relatively easily because there were like 4 people healing the pally. The only bad part was the AoE curse the ghost used before dying @_@

had about the same thing happen two nights ago. only there were 3 wraiths, and two fallen mages someone had zoned up. We had like 15 level 31-36 players all waiting, taking a smoke break. one ididot yells out, i can tank it. dead in 15 seconds.lol. i tractored him up, out of there. 2 of the wraiths and the fallen mages retreated, the one wraith stayed, and stayed, and stayed. finally after 20 minutes, everyone decided to gang up on him. 15 peeps doing 0 damage. i finnaly got up and had to Firega him 5 times to kill it, lol. then, our pt i had waited almost an hour to get and another 45 minutes for the zone to clear broke up. i hate this place, as most do. instead of Garliage I say we rename it to GARBAGE Citadel.

maybe everyone thinks my level is to low for theis place. 31BLM/WHM. but honestly when i did party there, i had no trouble with resist, with +26 INT and a Bard for Learned etude, and the party went rather smoothly until another stupid zone arrgo by a high level.
RE: My First Time..
# Mar 06 2005 at 9:17 AM Rating: Decent
Fallen Mages (Yeah, you spelt it right) aren't as much of a problem. One time, a Magic Jug was actually dragged to the zone. Killed everyone nearby that didn't run screaming to the zone. Several 50-ish parties went to it and slaughtered it as fast as possible, and then all was well. Fallen Evacuees are horrid, though. THey're the worst.

The exit to the momument is on map 2 at i5. It is after the 3rd Banashing Gate. You need 4 people to open the gate. Everybody below ~ level 65 needs sneak almost all the time and invisibilty in some places.

So someone in my party the other night said, "Hey I know a GREAT camp. Me being the Eazy Going guy that I am said cool lets go. So we head out to what I believe is Gate #1. At anyrate before we could really get the party going the gate opened and no one was standing on pillars, I SWEAR, so I asked a friend and he said he has been told that at a certain time the Gates open by them selves. Now here comes the Question.

1) When do these gates open by themselves?

2) Has anyone ever witnessed this and did about 100 Citadel Bats come out mobbed like CRAZY?

See, the reason I'm asking is because this would be AN EXCELLENT CAMP, if the you didn't party there when the Bats come out. TRUST ME IT WAS A SLAUGHTER! Some ppl thought that it was a train but I noticed that there were only Citadel bats, and if someone trained that many bats there would be other types of bats and most likely Beatles too.

Well, any info would be great, thx

If someone agrod a citadel bat near gate #2, then drop down the hole there, he'd end up in the chamber area. The bat can't follow through a hole, so he takes the long way around down the stairs. Gate #1 is between those stairs and gate #2, so every bat on the way will link, and mobs probably walk THROUGH doors or open them.

In the chamber, there's a small puddle of water. Run through that, and you will lose agro very fast. Or simply warp away. In either case, a LOT of bats will come through gate #1, and if they happen to lose interest near someone that's not sneaked...

No. There are LOADS of Citadel Bats in the area just past the gate, but there aren't any beetles there and you have to go a bit further in before you get to the Funnel Bats. It was a train, it had to be for there to be that many bats.

And I agree that this place is a great camp, much better than getting trained on every 5 minutes by the zone. Just make sure your BLM knows to use Escape if you get into trouble.

There are lots of ??? in Garliage. The one you want is in a room next to a rock. You need to target it to see it.
Just to warn you there are lots of quests that involve Garliage Citadel, this is the easiest. Use sneak and invis(beetles aggro to sight).

I like this place, much less confusing than yhoator and their is great xp to be had. I DONT like however, the noobs pulling bats to the zone and causing mass death, but it happens pretty rarely, plus I got 3 invites in less than 5 minutes to garlaige today without even putting my flag up :D

After getting level 32 at Yhoator, I decided I was going to skip Garlaige altogether. East Altepa I say! But, I couldn't find a willing party to go. So, I went to Garlaige. At first, I was like "why are people so whiny about this place?" After a 1/2 hour of exp trolling in the main hallway, I realized what the fuss was about: Too many bad pulls/link/aggro victims bring their hoard of crap straight up the hallway to the zone. Which, is bad since everybody below probably level 40 are between the zone and where the holes in the floor start. I spent more time raising people than actually working with my party. I don't mind raising, I like to help. But when you can see I'm in the middle of keeping my NIN or MNK alive with little room for error, please don't send me a tell, or spam /say!! I want out, plain and simple. I may sit around in East Altepa for hours waiting for a pt, but it's worth not dying continually from the bad mojo that is incessant within Garliage.

Is it possible to lvl here past 52? My static party is 51 with about 4k tnl. We camped After the first banish gate in the big open beetle and funnel bat room. The /check on The beetles are VT/IT so they should be VT by next level. Do We keep going or go to the ever-crowded Crawlers' Nest, where we get to camp the Helm Beetle spawns like they are Notorious Monsters? How's the leveling in Baileys? Help me out! Please

We tried Quicksand Caves and found Anticans to be a pain because the other 2 parties didnt Escape, they just trained 3 Anticans past our camp and zoned. And those Anticans need more then a can of Raid to kick there butts.
