Anyone know the drop rate on manticore hair off these guys? I'm wondering if it's worth farming for making the ninja tool kaginawa. Or should I just keep buying it from AH at 3k per? Makes the tools more expensive than I would like.

Tough little bastards. Our party of 53s had just gotten run out of Kuftal by some ******* training haunts through our camp while we were fighting a crab. There were two of use within a 100 exp of lvling, so we decided to fight these things. Checked as T or VT, don't remember. They are some mean bastards. There was some Antican also hanging around, so it became a fight with both. He was hitting me hard even as a Pld with close to 500 def. Not something I want to solo any time soon

I actually main tanked one of these for a lvl 43 PT as a 42WHM/SMN. It was one sick fight, I'll tell you that. It was rather funny actually, my brother saw me playing FFXI for the first time yesterday and said "freak, how many people does it take to kill a desert beetle?" I wish he had seen our fight with this thing instead. Here's my RP-esque account of it on the WHM forums:

The White Mage and the Manictore

they looks like they are mobing slowly but they are fast ... deadly fast ^^

i has been leveling my markmanship on them near Kuftal tunnel as THF > i shoted Sleep > disengage > flee (with AF boots = 45s) then i runned to Rabao ... i never tought it can catch me ... in 3/5 way to rabao BAM special move onto me :) so i slept again with sleep bolts and run normally to rabao ... so really they are almost same fast as FLEE and thats something like Chochobo so TAKE CARE ^^

Tore Me Up
# Aug 05 2004 at 10:38 PM Rating: Decent
I was up leveling in Eastern Altepa and was passing by one, and it aggroed, forgot to use sneak and invisible, that ************ tore me up in like 5 hits at level 51 RDM, almost killed me before the tank in our PT provoked it and we zoned.

New tradeskill: Manticoring.

Ranged Weapon Slot: Tarutaru Leash

Ammo slow: Tarutaru

Hints and tips:
To go from 0-9 FAST, I usually attach a grammatically correct Tarutaru-waru, to a Cotton Leash, and cast.

After level 9, I switch to the leather leash, as the cotton one is not very sturdy. You will find yourself replacing leashes every 2 or 3 bites with the cotton leash. The Leather Leash I've found, tends to last me at least 7 or 8 casts.

Although you might experience a lot of loss in funding the first 20 levels or so, once you hit 21, you become a MASTER GIL MAKER! The manticore pets sell for approximately 80-100K on my server, and when you can go out and wrangle 7 Manticora in one hour, hey... that sure beats moat carp! Also, you no longer have to worry about replacing broken leashes, becuase at 21 you can equip the Legendary Lu Chong's Leash. This awesome leash will NEVER break. It's also the only leash that allows you to catch legendary monticora, "Durgham Yetti." You can obtain this leash by turning in 10 Manticora into Cid. (yeah, that's right... the guy who is a freakin' science genious in Bastok.)
Just trade them to him, and he will be delighted to start performing experiments on them. His brother, is of course, Lu Chong.
The primary cost that is hard to get rid of, is the cost of replacing your mangled Tarus. They usually only withstand one or two bites...

As for bait, I'd stick to the cuddly-wuddly Tarutaruwarus who know how to speaky-weaky. They seem to attract the most Manticora.

Anyway, that's the first Game FAQ I've ever written! If you guys liked it, please give it a good score! If that Manticoring information I gave to you was helpful, please give it a good score, and shoot me a /tell on Carbuncle! Maybe with enough support I'll be able to get this thing published on GameFAQs.com --WOOHOO

Anyway, Happy Huntin', and remember, keep your taru on a leash!

64 Manticoring, 15 Fishing, .. that's it.
