I am a 61thf, and with nin sub and a rdm, i can solo him =p It's about a 24 hr spawn, though sometimes he pops earlier or later, like all nms. As a usual thf/war, i want this shield.. mmm attk.
Good luck to everyone who tries
-Vert

EDIT: As it turns out, i can not solo him. Massive thf evasion + utsusemi: Ichi does not equal HNM tank.
The worst part: the PT that showed up as i was lying there... got the shield. grr

Nah, the worst part is people making claims they can solo him when they have never tried and then get smoked when they do.

I think an HNM is pretty much just an uber NM, my definition is anything that takes more than one level 65 person to kill, thus qualifying mister Steelfleece, King Behemoth, etc...

on saturday, we killed this NM with our LS at 2:45 pm est. We bring our LS back at 11:45 am and camp it until 4:45 pm. It should've spawned in between 11:45 and 2:45 as a 21-24 hour spawn. Obviously this isn't true since it never popped. There is no way we could've missed it since we had 4 people with rng sub, no way. This ram is gay ><

Despite what everyone says, this guy is a big pansy. We took him down as a trio, WHM and NIN around level 60, and mid-50's RNG. The RNG had died while claiming it, and the NIN grabbed it and tanked it while I raised the RNG, and togather we took it down fairly easily. Alls you need is a WHM to Erase its "Rumble" Evasion down and "Great Bleat" Max HP Down, as well as Stona to counter his "Petribreath."
This thing is FAST!

I was killing random sheep in the Highlands when this thing spawned right behind me! I'm thinking, "Aww, I'll be okay. I'll zone to the Dunes before it sees me." I was wrong as soon as I started running it came after me. I was less than 10 feet away from the zones before he murdered me... When I'm a higher level, We shall meet again and I WILL GET MY REVENGE! MWUHAHAHAHA

Never seen this Ram in battle, but i can't imagine a Ram doing Crits often, i could think a Ninja could own this easily or anything that has Ninja sub.

Its not going to crit if you have a ninja tank. Best way to kill this guy is with a nin. Mighty strikes just causes a **** load of dmg to the pld unless you have a 74war/nin then bring a ninja. Yes it does use mighty strikes a ton.

NM vs HMN

I would propose an alternate definition of HNM. An NM is a named mob that either spawns on a timer, or spawns in PLACE of a placeholder mob. (This is what many japanese sites call "lottery" spawns, ie every time one of the placeholders is about to spawn in, there's a small chance that the NM will spawn in that mobs place).

I think what we've been calling "HNM" can be defined for the most part as an NM that spawns with a regular NM as its placeholder. For example, in La Theine, Lumbering Lambert is the normal NM spawn. However, in some rare cases, Bloodtear Baldurf will spawn IN LAMBERT'S STEAD. Essentially, Bloodtear is a lottery spawn, with Lambert as the placeholder. This is why you don't see the "regular" NM and the HNM at the same time.. the HNM has spawned in place of regular NM.

There are a number of these HNM pairs - Lambert-Baldurf, Rampaging-Steelfleece, Fafnir-Nidhogg, Behemoth-King Behemoth, Adamantoise-Aspidochelone. Of course not ALL mobs that we think of as HNM are part of a pair. Some are just serious, high-lvl badasses, and get a place of their own on the HNM list. Also, some NMs appear to just have timers. Of course it's very difficult for us, the end users, to tell whether that's just the law of probability working out over time, or whether there really is a strict timer involved...

Anyhow, good luck to all of you hunting / avoiding HNMs!
NM vs HNM
# Jul 20 2004 at 9:30 PM Rating: Decent
1) an NM has a set "level" of experiance (ie. steelfleece is a 60-75 spawn, or 60-75 mob)

2) HNM have no "level", thus are "lvl 80+" if anything.

Some NM's give a title, some dont...
As far as I know, all HNM's give a title.

In response to the post about HNM being different than NM in that they give you a title... emmmm Crab Crusher for killing Bubbly Bernie.... I don't think he qualifies for HNM.

I was out farming Elementals and Rams in Konschtat Highlands, using RDM44/RNG1 for widescan. So I'm running around destroying everything in sight, then I check Wide Scan and I see Steelfleece. Immediately I message my LS, I start running to it to try and hold it until the could get there, but before I even got close, it was off widescan. Did a search of the area, BLM75 was there, I'm assuming he killed it, because there weren't any other really high levels there. I most likely would have died anyways.

Im lvl 56 mnk and used my 2hr thinking it be hard. i took about 75% life of with that. our group we had ranged from lvl 68-54 so it wasnt that hard.

my linkshell was out camping stray mary for a mary horn (while i was in pashlow farming goobbues for tree cuttings to finance my emperor's hairpin) and the linkshell text was buzzing all about this ram and they wanted to kill it so bad

i got a teleport-dem since i was at the other side of pashlows near the rolanberry zone, and eventually we rounded up 61 war/nin that used to be in a linkshell that i was in before that disbanded, 50 whm/25 thf (he was farming in pashlow too; he allowed the ram to suck him in so he could hp to jeuno to change subjobs and teleport back), 54 whm/1 rng (he was camping mary), 55 pld/war, 50 blm/whm, and 56 whm/blm. i was using 52 war/15 thf

the war/nin was a awesome blink tanker - steelfleece was having trouble hitting. i positioned myself behind that **** and used berserk/aggressor and sneak attack. my sturmwinds did 300-500 damage (i used it 3 times) and SA was hitting for 200. eventually the ram got fed up with me and i got hit for 80-150 dmg couple times in the process but it gave the blink tanker enough time to recast the blink thing and provoke (note to damage dealers and mages - stand behind the ram he likes petribreath and did it 4 times in the battle)

the fight lasted about 8-9 minutes. the blm finished it off with a freeze for 700. i got 9 exp points from this mob - and we got a terrible drop (rampaging horn, ram horn, and 2 earth crystals).

I like killing al kinds of rams with party members, to sell the horn and skins, (you could make a living from it).
Anyway, my level 20 MNK | 10 WARR, got beat up... i heared a ram's noice, lots of tremors... so i looked back, saw it, threw a peblle... and then checked... ... IT... >.> um, shouting for help was kinda late.. >.>, i hit it for 3 a hit, and it hit me for much much more >.>, 600 a hit i think? or maybe more... anyways... i was dead in a hit... lucky i did hit it for 3 2 times...
cause it missed one time... >.>
i hate him >.>

I killed Steelfleece today with a 2 person party. I am a level 61 ninja and my partner was a 52 whm.
He has very low accuracy, so I didnt have much trouble keeping utsusmi up. I did get hit once in awhile though, so the whm was needed for some cures and regen. He has ALOT of hp though, took us a good 15 mins to take him down. Got 4 ram skins and a Rampaging horn.

Yeah I saw it today for the first time. a Lv 75 BLM, RDM, and THF took about 10 mins to take this thing down...they had a crowd just watching...also it does an attack that is AOE and gives you the Status "Max HP Down" It also drops a Viking Shield--worth 600k on Caitsith

I doubt you could call this a HNM...

Was PTing in onzozo today and our BRD's LS said that steelfleece had spawned. Our whm teleported us to the dem crag and we went down and started fighting it. The fight only lasted about 5 minutes and we only had 5 members. 62 war, 62 drg, 61 brd, 63 rdm, 61 whm. It does use mighty strikes non-stop once it reaches half health but it is nothing to worry about. I would say a solid 58+ PT can take this thing down.

HNM doesn't mean it takes an alliance of 75s to take it down. It means it spawns once a day, as opposed to NMs which spawn every few hours or less.

Um.. spawntime really has absolutely nothing to do with whether a mob is considered an HNM or not. HNMs are generally higher level NMs, as Nick said, but the major distinction is the fact that it gives you a title for killing it.

Uh isn't aquarius an HNM lol. Hey guess what that doesn't take a day to spawn. HNM don't all spawn once a day. They're just higher lvl NM

I was walking to the crag of dem as a level 43 rdm and saw this badass fighting a level 60 samurai, and shortly afterwords the samurai ran like a little girl.

In it's wake it left a 13 bst and a 29 war dead from what I saw. I was in a hurry so I just raised one of them.

The time of spawn was approximately in the middle of the day on 11/11 of that Vana'diel year, and it was lightsday. Don't know if that means anything though.

Happy hunting!
