I went with a gimped sub after what I read on here thinking it would be helpful. Took a scroll of warp and reraise with me and teleported over to vahzl. Got aggroed by a demon or two at the spawn point, but otherwise no trouble.
Will admit I got lucky, a lvl 75 rdm was nearby about to do the same fight and we joined up but it wasn't nearly has hard as I thought.
Hit me for about 50-150 points of damage, depending. I hit it for 80-100 myself and my penta thrusts did 1100+ dmg each time. All in all, with regen, protect, some potions as backup and healing breath, I think I could've soloed it. Not positive, but figured I'd add my experiences for anyone still on the fence here.
Mind you the rdm enfeebed the hell outta that thing. Never got a chance to do more than berserk.

I'm a 50 PLD/WAR looking into getting the AF Armor since I already have the AF Weapon "Honor Sword" do any of you know what level Icould solo this at, or offer any help in doing it? I play on the Fairy Server and my characters name is Haseokun. I am in Sandy atm starting this quest. i have the full l45 Iron Ram set equipped for Tanking as well as thefull RSE2 set for 27-33. I tend to use the Trump Crown alot for its MP and DEF since it has more DEF then the Iron Ram Helmet and gives MP. I wear the IR Helm more often lately though. I have a 39 GS, but now Ican use my 50 GS I just bought off AH a few days ago. Are there any AF quests other then AF1 that I can do on my own? Or must I enlist theh elp of people that I do not know. Most of my friends didn't have the money to pay this month so they won't be on the game. Sad but true, the others...I just havn't seen login all month who knows why. =/ I figured the IR Set will get me to 55 at which I will need to really consider getting AF2 AF3 and AF4 asap. If I cannot find asistance in thsi then I will probably get WHM to 25 for subbing purposes and attempt it with Re-Raise on myself.
Just soloed as 71SMN/35WHM with Ifrit for Beast Gloves. Flaming Crush x3 - 1743, 1634, 2159 with uncapped SMN magic. Had to recast Ifrit at 50% and used 4 ethers and a yag just to be safe.

I went as Drg/whm although I should have just gone /War and Angon, Deep Breathing, Berserk, Warcry, Penta Thrust to pwn
If you do fight this guy watch out for Bio it can kill you after the fight which I have seen happen on a few people.
For brother Dragoons wanting to take this guy Super Jump at 25% and let Wyvern tank the last bit (he tends to Bersek and spam Bio).

I was also surprised at how easy he was. I soloed him on my 75 SAM/NIN. I brought a vile elixir just in case, but took him out without using it and still had over 1200hp remaining. Kept 2hr ready to try and sneak in a Tachi: Hobaku if he decided to blow up, but he never did that either, so I just kept using Kasha on him, which worked great. Once he's paralyzed he hardly seems able to do anything at all, so don't forget to use it on him if you have it at your disposal. ^^
I was gonna try and solo him as a pld, but I decided to bring a bst friend along. 75pld/nin (no haste gear), and he managed to hit me twice with shadows down. Started with 300tp spirits within, and Ni, recasted Ni once, and I think ichi once and never got to 2nd ni recast before he was dead. I was kind of disapointed he was that weak. I thought I remembered him being tougher, but I guess I was a low level at that time lol. Should be easily soloable by any 75 job.

This may be a silly question but this is the first character I've gotten to this level. I know that this fight for AF is required for each job. What I'm curious about is that I have SAM and MNK at roughly the same level, could I potentially get the quest with both jobs...then fight the mob, come back and turn it in twice under each job essentially? Or does it consume something upon turn in? If I could knock out this fight for an AF on two jobs at once that would be very nice.

Yeah, solo'd as a Whm/Nin. Like it was said, he's not too hard. Just make sure you keep him silenced and slowed 'cause he attacks pretty fast. He interupted my Stoneskin twice I beleive during the whole battle. He ate my shadows for lunch for the most part. Paralyze stuck on him but he never once was actually paralyzed. Flash immediately wore so was completely pointless. He never exploded on me but Berserked like 3 times. I set a new record for myself with HexaStrike for 1140 dmg. I kept barfira up but it did no good. When he wasn't silenced he immediately casted Drain and Aspir. He started out the battle with Bio III which was weird. He took Stoneskin down as well before the recast was up and I have Haste+28%. I don't have enhancing magic capped

This guy was a joke, hits for like 120-150max. I pretty much soloed it as Drg a few Cure III's from paladin. Penta Thrusted it for 1182, and then 1058 2nd time. No self-destruct..... Peice of cake.(Even if it did selfdestruct ~Super Jump~ ^^)
Solo'd this as a 75WHM/NIN. Wasn't too hard.

was doin this last night as 70 sam/nin
2 houred and got it down to around 50% health and started getting hit, was at about 500 health myself and then some party getting ready to do darkspark after me healed me (I was so happy^^) It self destructed at 10% hp, only did 100 damage.
I would say any 65+ melee can do this as long as they someone who can heal them.

Went 75BLM/rdm with a 74PLD buddy to help a friend out on his AF. We had him pop DS and we went to smacking him around while he sat off to the side, took about 1 min mayb 1.5 mins and he was done, a few nukes, a stun or 2 along with shield bash for self destruct and, he was done for.

Soloed as a 75 War/nin easy fight killed him in 10 minutes. Bio III was the main thing that hurt the most. It hit me for only 90 or 100 hp but missed most the time casted shadows only 4 times during the fight due to the Bio III.
I can duo this guy as my 62RDM/NIN with a lvl 60+ BRD/WHM (for haste songs, slow songs and erase if he's high enough lvl) just keep utsusemi/stoneskin/phalanx/ice spikes up and you'll do fine
And as 63SAM/RNG with a lvl 55+ WHM (for haste/cure/erase) since I can get 4 Sidewinders in without 2hr and another 3 from 2hr plus a barrage. This guy has low evasion (so I rarely miss with 100% tp), Sidewinder hits around 800-900 the first time, then he usually uses Berserk and all the Sidewinders after hit about 1,700 and Barrage hits around 500, so 6x 1,700 = 10,200 + 800 = 11,000 + 500 = 11,500... He goes down pretty quick, just gotta watch out for Self-Destruct.

Their is no way this is a 55 monster! 65 maybe, I was a 60 pld and got smoked. Only took about 1/4 life off. I subbed whm for stoneskin and blink. Good Luck to all who fight this mob.

soloed as 75drk/nin was tough hit me for about 115 when the attacks landed but guillotine was doin a good 1000-1200 damage was intimidated from me for a while but i ended up killing with 322 hit points to spare good luck drks!

Third try: Remembered my NPC, same plan, the little **** went on a RAMPAGE hitting me for a ton every time, double attacking all the time. Went cure happy and kept fighting, managed to get him down to about 10-15%. If I'd had blood weapon for this fight or maybe the second, I'd have been fine.
The problem is the rate at which I take damage. He goes down pretty fast, and even with whm sub and Bio III on me I can do 1000 damage with guillotine. I just get slapped around terribly, so this next time [after I get back from work] with my 2hr up, I'm going to give it a try with a tavnazian taco. If I fail again I'll try one more time with the taco, 2hr, and NPC and after that I'm giving up.
As an aside - I hate the ninja job. It's embarrassing to watch a ninja 5 levels lower than me kill dark spark while barely getting hit at all. inc. DRK defense SE, this whole glass-cannon, die-in-a-strong-breeze thing is getting old.

Who the hell say it didn't use Self-Destruct is a damn noob. I Duo this as rdm 70/nin and my friend rdm 50/blm. My friend pop it then it use self-destruct within 3-5 seconds after it is pop. We all hit the floor. It did around 1,900 damage to me with buff and damn.
When did DS get this smart to use self-destruct at the start? We try it again this time it nuke us with spell and Bio 3 then around 50% it use self-destruct again, dammit we need a stunner. We ended up kissing the floor again. Bio3 is a killer, it wear off my buffs alot.

Yes Odqan does self-destruct. He is a cluster mob though and I'm not sure if he will self-destruct 3 times.

Just soloed him as SAM75/NIN37. Fight went flawlessly up until the last 15%.

Soloed as 65BST last night. Fight took 2 FunguarFamiliar pets and one Pet Food Zeta. Called pet, took out the demons close to the torches, made sure timer was up, then popped DS and put pet on him, S/I and ran back to the corridor where you enter that area - it's aggro-free. Once DS finished off first pet, he was at ~70%. Put second pet on him and meleed, used Zeta and Sic>Silence gas. Finished the fight with second pet at <5%, I had 100% TP but didn't have to Rampage. S/I again, ran up and touched the torches for Shadow Flames, then warped out.
Probably would have been a bit of an easier fight if I hadn't forgotten food. Also forgot to use Blink/SS, DS only hit me twice during the fight but it was for 180-250 each time (he was Zerked).
