Historical Information

In Hindu mythology, Garuda was a lesser deity that often served as the mount for the god Vishnu. He was said to have a golden body, a white face, crimson wings, and the beak of an eagle, while the rest of his body was human. He was said to be so large that his body and wingspan could block out the sun when he flew by.

He came into the service of the gods after his mother Vinata, the sister of the serpent mother Kadru, lost a foolish bet and became enslaved by her sister. Garuda approached the serpents seeking to free his mother of her enslavement, and managed to make a deal with them that his mother could go free if he were able to obtain the Amrita (see item Amrita), the elixir of immortality in the possession of the gods, for them.

The gods held the Amrita in what they felt was an impenetrable defense, as they had it ringed by an eternal flame that covered the sky, guarded by a machine of some design with sharp, rotating blades, and two gargantuan serpents. Garuda, undeterred by these barriers, doused the flames by diverting the waters of the nearby rivers into them, shrank himself down to pass by the blades of the machine, and eviscerated the serpents before taking the Amrita and turning back for home.

Before he reached Kadru and the serpents, Garuda was confronted by the god Vishnu, who promised him the gift of immortality if he became his mount, to which the bird deity agreed. Later en route, Garuda was confronted by the sky god Indra (see Indra Katars), where he promised that he'd promise to get the Amrita back to the gods after fulfilling his bargain with the serpents, in exchange for Indra allowing Garuda to feed upon the serpents.

Finally reaching the snakes, he places the Amrita on the ground, thus absolving his mother of her slavery, but suggests to them that they should perform their rituals before drinking from it, which they readily left to do. As they departed, Indra swooped down and reclaimed the Amrita, thus allowing Garuda to complete his end of their agreement.

Garuda now forever serves as Vishnu's mount and the eternal enemy to the serpents, which he preys on every day.

Defeated the high level Garuda just last night. The party set up was:

66 PLD/WAR
66 WHM/SMN
66 THF/NIN
66 BLM/WHM
65 BLM/WHM
65 RDM/BLM

It was almost disappointing how easy it was. We didn't use any items except for food at the beginning, and didn't use any of our 2hrs, and her 2hr did no more than 200 damage to each of us with Baraera up. Garuda had about 10,000 hps.

Hope that helps people get an idea of what level is required to do something like this ^^
OMFG!!!!!

Garuda was fun to fight with a pt ... considering all I did at my lowbie level was haste and refresh everyone. We fought her on firesday I think (maybe lightningsday) and she wasn't too hard for the pt to take down, she just blinked once and healed once. Our whm, bless her, kept BarAera up, and refreshed it about 5 seconds before the meleers got hit by aerial blast. (We used on-bridge method) Good luck everyone :]

Actually, a party 55-60 can kill the avatars, 65+ is a bit excessive.

As for Garuda herself, it should be noted that it's not so much that Prime Avatars are strong to their element as that they're strong to every element except their weakness. If you want to damage Garuda with a magic spell, it better be Blizzard line, or it'll be resisted, heavily.

# Jul 06 2004 at 7:18 PM Rating: Decent
Nazrial you can do both, but the ones in which you solo the avatar (mini-avatar quests) make you AND the avatar capped at level 20. The ones where you bring a party, if you want everyone to enter the Protocrystal, each party member must have accepted the quest AND have the Tuning Fork needed to enter the Protocrystal... i.e Gauda = Cloister of Wind = Tuning Fork of Wind. These battlese should be fought with a full party of level 65+

okay im a lcv 20 summoner trying to solo this avitar, and everytime i use my 2hr and then i use carbuncles 2 hour attack on them, carbuncle doenst seem to want to do it. I mean im like right next to him so the reason cant be that carb moved. also i always have all the hate so carb should have all green to go and kick her butt. but carb all of a sudden gets cold feet or scared or something and desides not to do it, why is that? also it has happened to me 5 times, cant be a glitch

for searing light to work your mp needs to be 44+ at lvl 20 and carby needs to be attacking garuda or it will always miss

Ok my party totally destroyed this thing on firesday. The make up was 71 mnk 75 blm (HUGE) 75 whm 69 rdm 66 whm and 54 nin. She uses blink i believe and here's a note for all of you. If you're lowbie melee and you fight you always run away at about 1/2 its hp. It used aerial blast, good thing the mnk is one smart person and told me to run back to mages around 1/2 hp so i didn't die. We just destroyed it in like 4 mins or something. Record is 1 min 45 secs but hell i got garuda right so i'm happy.
beat her

The correct name for the Astral Flow ability is "Aerial Blast."
KILLED HER!!!
# May 03 2004 at 12:51 PM Rating: Decent
I killed her on Friday night. We made the biggest mistake of all. We fought her on Windsday ><. We though about waiting, but it had just turned to windsday and the BLM had to go a sort time afterwards. Ok, here is the detail of what happend.

Group: 61 DRG, 73 RDM, 63 MNK, 62 NIN, 68 BLM, and me a 54 WHM.

We started the battle going rather well, when we did nice damage, the DRG managed to hit around 100 per hit. When the 2hr came it took out our NIN, and nocked the MNK down to 200 hp(MNK's health was at full at 1600). Big mistake to fight on Windsday. The RDM had Phanlax up so she didn't get hurt much. The DRG lived.... not sure how. I raised the NIN quickly, but then Garuda used Aeroga II ><. NIN down again. He wasn't happy. We killed her.

Lesson Learned: Become a lvl 56 WHM and have Raise II and don't fight on Windsday.

Sorry I couldn't remeber more to the battle. I was just glad we won!

Note that she'll also repeatedly use a spell that can heal her when she gets hit enough. That means that if you get one of those odd but common cases where her Astral Flow does huge damage to one member of the party and the rest get only a couple hundred, you want to raise that member ASAP to keep your DPS high, or she'll just stay at like ten percent health and keep healing until you run out of magic. If, like me, you're a bard, you may want to switch from Carol to another attack boosting song after the Flow.
