Historical Information

In Hindu mythology, Garuda was a lesser deity that often served as the mount for the god Vishnu. He was said to have a golden body, a white face, crimson wings, and the beak of an eagle, while the rest of his body was human. He was said to be so large that his body and wingspan could block out the sun when he flew by.

He came into the service of the gods after his mother Vinata, the sister of the serpent mother Kadru, lost a foolish bet and became enslaved by her sister. Garuda approached the serpents seeking to free his mother of her enslavement, and managed to make a deal with them that his mother could go free if he were able to obtain the Amrita (see item Amrita), the elixir of immortality in the possession of the gods, for them.

The gods held the Amrita in what they felt was an impenetrable defense, as they had it ringed by an eternal flame that covered the sky, guarded by a machine of some design with sharp, rotating blades, and two gargantuan serpents. Garuda, undeterred by these barriers, doused the flames by diverting the waters of the nearby rivers into them, shrank himself down to pass by the blades of the machine, and eviscerated the serpents before taking the Amrita and turning back for home.

Before he reached Kadru and the serpents, Garuda was confronted by the god Vishnu, who promised him the gift of immortality if he became his mount, to which the bird deity agreed. Later en route, Garuda was confronted by the sky god Indra (see Indra Katars), where he promised that he'd promise to get the Amrita back to the gods after fulfilling his bargain with the serpents, in exchange for Indra allowing Garuda to feed upon the serpents.

Finally reaching the snakes, he places the Amrita on the ground, thus absolving his mother of her slavery, but suggests to them that they should perform their rituals before drinking from it, which they readily left to do. As they departed, Indra swooped down and reclaimed the Amrita, thus allowing Garuda to complete his end of their agreement.

Garuda now forever serves as Vishnu's mount and the eternal enemy to the serpents, which he preys on every day.
