General Information

    • There are two that spawn in this area, but the one that alternates pop locations (can spawn inside or outside of the room) is the placeholder mob. Despite its placeholder's spawn pattern, Charybdis will always spawn inside the room.

  • Respawn time is approximately 8 hours after its last Time of Death.

  • Immune to Sleep. Susceptible to Stun, Slow, Bind, Blind, and Paralysis. Susceptible to Gravity, but builds a resistance over time.

  • Is capable of attacking multiple times per attack round.

Charybdis Special Attacks

  • Hard Membrane: Self target Evasion boost. (Effect can be dispelled).

  • Tentacle: Single target physical attack.

  • Ink Jet: Frontal cone AoE magic damage with additional Blind effect.

  • Cross Attack: Single target two-hit physical attack.

  • Whirlwind: AoE Wind based magic damage with an additional Vitality down effect (Circle of effect originates from mob).

  • Maelstrom: AoE Water based magic damage with additional an Strength down effect (Circle of effect originates from mob).

  • Regeneration: Self target Regen effect. (Effect can be dispelled).

Historical Information

In Greek mythology, Charybdis is a sea monster that is said to take the form of a gargantuan mouth that sucks in and spits out enormous volumes of water three times a day. The daughter of the ocean god Poseidon and earth goddess Gaia, she was originally a naiad until she stole the cattle of Geryon from Heracles, which angered Zeus and caused him to transform her into a monster.

She resided along the side of a strait of water within an arrow shot's distance of Scylla, another sea monster that took on the form of a creature with six vicious dog-heads atop incredibly long necks. Ships passing through the strait would have to decide between passing close to Scylla's domain to avoid Charybdis, or vice versa. They would almost always choose the Scylla side, as while passing by Scylla would ensure that some of the crew would be killed, passing near Charybdis could result in the destruction of the entire ship.

It is believed that this myth is the origin of the phrase, "Between a rock and a hard place", referring to being forced to make a choice where both options are difficult.

With the new PLD buffs (Auto Refresh and Shield Mastery), I plan on *attempting* to solo Charb. Full buffs before entering the boxing match, and making sure to have either Ice Spikes or Shock Spikes on. (Ice giving paralyze, Shock giving Stun effect) I will post after battle and let you know how it goes. I believe that with Phalanx, Stoneskin, and Aquaveil with VIT gear and food, I should be able to at least attempt a fight. I also will have Icharus Wing and potions in case it gets close to the end and it just needs a little push.

Just as a word of warning to any PLD wanting to try this (no thats not me making the OP). Charybdis hits a buffed pld for around 100-110 dammage a hit, and can attack more then 6 times a round. So in a worst case scenario you will take 600+ dammage per round, not counting crits.

Parsing dammage, Charybdis seems to have around 20,000 hp so you need to survive long enough to be able to do that much dammage.

I really don't think, no matter how buffed up and lucky a PLD is, that they can solo this NM. Other then a few select jobs (rdm/blu apperently is one of these, who knew) he is not soloable, and even for those select jobs, its no mean feat.
No Brd Necessary

Killed without a brd last night... pt set up was blm, rdm, pld, nin. That's it. Nin had pimp gear, but it's possible without a brd. Yall just need skillz. I am unsure of his exact windows as of yet...

this sucker is hard to kill without a brd... 1st try rdm x2 and a 75 nin with capped merit evasion. still isn't enough... this thing hits like carzy... 1st try we took it to 50% and we wipe. then has to wait for a brd friend to come over and took it down... it really is nothing with a brd... but without a brd this thing is so hard to kill... wellz i'm happy that i finally got mine joyuse... good luck camping urs.

It's been 17 hours now since ToD, and.. no pop yet, and yes someone in our LS was there at all times so we couldnt have missed it.

IMO the entire Window thing on this guy is messed up. Hope I have to NEVER camp him again.

I ******* HATE THIS THING!!!
Well I was there to help my smn friend get his coffer key and i run to the room to get my joy toy well to see if its up and theres a 68 bst and hes killing the place holders then he warps and he pops its like 1am est and I freak out basically. I go to my friend list and spam /tells hey you busy??? and almost everyoen was fightnig gods at the time well after they killed kirnin about 2x i started getting everyone i could to come and well the bulk of us were already there and then other ppl started to show up a rdm and a whm and someone was like pull and so i flashed it and pull it back to the slope and the other bulk of us return we had a taru 75rdm/nin tank it cause well none of us were buffed and i died first off. Well long story short he rapped us and most of us used our 2 hours so then we all raise up. We got him down to 27% or so and we decided to do it again but this time we were shrot some 2 hours which probally would of let us win. Well i as mad and desperate so I asked some RMT there to help a nin and a whm offer to help we team up and the nin was going to tank, Well i pull it again with flash and i noticed it misssed alot while blinded so I'm guessing his acc is pretty bad (dont be like duh no **** if he was blind but blind isnt 100% so sit down and read) well long story short we start dying off to his AoE's and we all quit it sucked ***.

Getting Joyeuse turned out to be quite an ordeal. It was likely the most grueling challenge I've faced in Vana'diel so far, and here's my story.

I've known for some time that in order to achieve complete Red Mage supremacy I'd need a JoyToy. Its just sick with En-spells, and I'm nearly 74 so dual wielded with another good sword, RDM just pwns.

I researched on Alla what I needed to know to get ToD, actually pop him, and deal with him when popped. Sadly little of what is here actually matches my own experience. ><; I think everyone's Charby story is a lil different. You learn a lot about yourself and your friends as you go through something like this.

So I headed out on Monday morning to SSG, seeking a ToD so I could camp it later. Was relieved to learn that opening the Gold Door doesn't actually eat a coin (ya, I'm a big nub.), which put me in good spirits right away. As soon as you open that door sneak up, as everything after is at least EP to 75.

As I hiked through SSG using Vana'diel Atlas as my guide to get to the Charby pop spot it became apparent that a group of known gilsellers spend a lot of time here farming Siren's Hair. Simply being in their presence was enough to ruin my good mood from the Gold Door, though seeing 2 of them getting owned by Novv the Whitehearted made it all right again. I continued on to the Charby camp without incedent.

Luckily there was a group there trying to pop him. I just happened to know someone from the group as the leader of an LS that a friend was in part time (He's in my LS, the PrismKnights of Odin, most of the time). This was handy, as the lines of communication were already open. We chatted a bit, and I assured her that I was only there to get ToD. Then I stood there, occasionally recasting Stoneskin because of that AoE attack from the Devil Mantas, and waited for them to kill Charybdis.

At about the 4 hour mark he popped. I didn't know how long they'd been there before I got there, but they seemed weary of their surroundings so I expect they were there for a bit prior (In retrospect I should have paid more attention to this particular aspect of camping Charby for reasons that will be revealed). I believe their party setup was WAR/NIN, BLM, WHM, MNK/WHM, RDM, RDM. My instincts told me that they'd have trouble tanking it with WAR/NIN, even though he was above 74, and without any great surprise they wiped. It was apparent that they were understaffed, and that maybe a different tank was needed. I'd actually decided to help them cure a bit during the fight, and as they wiped I escaped so as not to join them on the floor.

I got back to the camp as they were finishing up picking themselves off the ground. To my amazement and dismay, I saw that whoever the party leader was had invited along those same gilsellers that ruin the zone for regular players out of what I can only imagine was sheer desperation.

Let me digress for a moment. I want to get something clear. I don't believe that gilsellers are evil people, in fact some of them are nice and will help you out if its not against their own interests. That having been said, I disagree with making use of their aid, as it simply perpetuates the sentiment that perhaps they belong out there with the rest of us. Gilsellers (and buyers for that matter) are a terrible part of this game, and every effort should be made to clear this issue up.

Anyway, they won this time. Their party of 6 players and 3 gilsellers was enough to overtake Charby, and I expect that whoever they were getting Joyeuse for was very happy. A gs named cannotlinktol died in the fight, as well as another, I think it was the THF named Parou. Sadly they got R3's from the WHM in the party.

Political issues aside, I now had the Time of Death firmly in grip and set an /lsmes calling for aid after the 8th hour from ToD. I spent the intervening time doing a few quests (finally finished Lure of the Wildcat x4, now to determine what the hell they're for...), grabbing some lunch, and leveling RDM with some LS pals. Was the first time in a while a group of us all got together to level, and it was nice to work with players that really knew how to do their jobs. Oh, and if anyone wants to perpetuate the myth that 2 DRKs can't be in the same party together, I assure you that it works great, I guess as long as they're good DRKs. ^^

We ended up leveling in sky over by the Ulli camp. Pretty good exp, getting 1k or so per chain, and we even got claim and drop on Ulli for one of our party members' Sky LS. Was nifty to take on a mob like that with just an exp party, and we owned it. Riding high on that lil wave of euphoria, we went off to the Charby camp, hoping our wait wouldn't be too long (ominous foreshadowing).

As anyone knows that has camped or researched Charby, it generally pops within an 8-hour window that opens 8 hours from ToD. I won't bore you with the details, but Charybdis popped for me after FIFTEEN hours from ToD. =P People left, stayed, DC'd, reconnected, fell asleep, woke back up again over the entire course of the night and next day before that Awful Squid finally reared its ugly head. Devil Mantas pop every 16 minutes, so I suggest bringing a good book or killing Sahagin while you wait. The worst part of which was that pretty much everyone had logged to sleep by then and weren't coming back very soon. So as a result my pal Xaidian and I pretty much stood around freaking out.

However, as fate would have it, Joyeuse was to be mine this day. Slowly people started to come back on. In haste, we formed a party that didn't look like it'd work, and didn't. We assumed that our window of opportunity would eventually close, with someone else claiming the mob, so the time to act was now. Party setup was PLD/NIN, DRK/THF, DRK/THF, DRK/NIN, RDM/BLM, RDM/BLM, all 70-75. We barely scratched the thing ><;

So we got up, regrouped, and came up with a much much more solid 2-party alliance that was basically a lot of lucky timing. Some of our friends just happened to be logging on, and the timing worked out great. Final party setup was PLD/NIN, DRK/THF, DRK/THF, DRK/NIN, BST/NIN, SAM/THF, SMN/WHM, BLM/WHM, BRD/WHM, RDM/BLM, RDM/BLM, all 70-75. We demolished that overgrown plate of calamary, and I have my nifty sword. ^^b Took out Zuug the Shoreleaper just after for good measure, though only dropped a Bastore Sardine for our troubles....

Thanks to the PKs that helped out:
Xaidian, Riddaraan, Leion, Takhisis, Eliteos, Khymaera, Akeashar, Rihai, Shiminai, and Karusan. ^^

And special thanks to some friends who helped as well:
Arilayne, Bigdaavetoo, Kio, Rhyis, Valion, and Firiel. ^^

Guys I have a word of advice for you, if you are not the only group in there and you have claim and a pop links, KEEP IT SLEPT AND IN THE RED! People in my party were MPK'd because I lost claim but had been sleeping it, and the other group casted Dia on it, thereby keeping it awake and attacking me, and keeping me useless since I'm constantly having to recast stoneskin and cure just to keep hate off of the WHMs. So for the love of all, KEEP LINKS CLAIMED.

Luckily we were able to go on to kill Chary and I got my wonderful Joytoy (and my level back from dying helping others the night prior) thanks to my buddies in EO! TY Jonathan, Melime, Fluffnstuff, Judgejacobs, and Sirlancealot for your uber help!

Ok here is the deal. I am on Cerberus Server and have been camping Charby for about a week now. I always have the ToD and am there for the pop 80% of the time. No kill yet. Why? Because I can't get a tank there fast enough to out pull the other campers (who can manage to bring their entire LS). My roommate Nemith has also been down there helping me out this whole time. We have decided on the unthinkable. We are gunna duo him with my 72rdm/blm and his 74 smn/whm.

"But you have no tank...how are you going to accomplish this feat?" you ask.

Carbuncle will pull that beast up through the gold door where we will kite him around the pond (just like we kited the NM doll for my pimp hat and like we did aquarius). The toughest part is actually getting him through the door into the aggro free area. Everythng should go ok provided we don't get hit with rain and the elementals pop. That would make it practically impossible.

So is it suiside?

Let you know after we give it a go. Don’t worry; there will be plenty of screenshots.

Well, was in SSG helping a friend with Impulse Drive NM, so after that my NIN friend that was helping too took me to the Chary room and we camp it for a few hours. Another NIN friend of mine comes to help if we pop it, and just as we were getting ready to leave, Chary pops. I go claim with gravity (RDM/WHM) and the NINs go to work on it. I keep barwatera up and them hasted as well as blind/vit- off. 20 minutes or so later, I find myself with a fancy new joyeuse in my hand, and about to faint from the excitement lol. So, for any hopeful RDMs out there, it can be done with only 3 ppl and no BRD ^^.

I wanted to give a shout out and congrats to Dakko for getting his Joyeuse the other day. We had orignaly 6 members, Myself (PLD/war), 2 BRD/WHM, 2 SMN/WHMm and a NIN/WAR. Welp, the ninja left after being afk for a long time, then I had to step up to the plate as tank. Now, a friend of ours logged on (WHM/BLK) and they joined us. We had been at that camp almost the full 4 hours of his window, and finnaly it spawned. Bards kept constant double Ballad, and double VIT on me, and we whomped it good!

For extra info for PLD's that wish to tank him, the timing for him is realy easy. After his first hit (even in the multibles he has) Just start casting. No matter how many times he hits you after that first hit, unless it's his special, you will not get interupted. Also, keep defender up, and shoot off Rampart, and Sentinal when you get it. With those both up, as an Elvaan PLD/WAR i had 960 Def (defender included), and with songs, I had a VIT base of 77 +77. He barely hit me for more than 25 per swing, and Flash can cause him to miss all of his attacks. Save up to 300% TP with sword for Spirits Within, and make sure to cure yourself as needed. Don't let the WHM('s) over cure you as toward the end (last 10% of HP) of the fight you may have hate control issues even with the best Enmity Gear. Otherwise don't be intemidated by all the people saying that only a Ninja can tank this and live. Remember, PLD's were 'made' to tank. It may be a longer fight, but you most definatly can do it.

Good luck and Safe Journeys~
NM is an uber monk <.<

Well my experience with this guy, hmm lets just say it started when i was bored and asked the ls if they needed anything or if there was something to do. My ls buddy by the name of Elysian (Drg,War,SAM) decides to camp Charybdis and so me and a whm friend (xkitten) went to go with him. We arrive at the place and NO ONE is around which to my negativity i was thinking "Probably going to take a while for it to spawn"
After a few Devil manta kills and me coming back from being AFK, BAM I SEE HIM!!! It's just us 3 so we definitely needed help and started to ask the ls for help. Fortunately a few of them came to help but on the way there, a ninja gets there all by himself <.<, he proposes that he will tank if we all help him and of course has the pass to lot and we agreed. The nin and whm died due to the fact that we were giving it too much tp so I started kiting him until he stopped aggroing me. Then we regroup with reinforcement and did it again, this time knowing it can't be melee too much or it will gain too much tp so basically we all started just curing and nuking. 3 people including me lot and lucky for me, I get the highest lot. Once again, thanx for everyone that was there. LL over and out! :)

Congrats to Zakari for getting his Joyeuse today!

He managed to get ToD and called some people along to help him out: BRD75 (me), MNK75/NIN, RDM75/WHM (Zakari), RDM73/???. WAR72/NIN, WAR75/MNK

The WAR/NINs really didn't do much. They were there for add control. The BRD wasn't actually my character. My main's a 75 PLD and when I heard of how Zakari needed help for this, I remembered the arduous task it was for me to obtain the Joyeuse for my PLD so I decided to log onto a friend's account and go as BRD.

We were camping against another LS, and maybe after 30 mins after I arrived at the spawn area, I went AFK and told my group to <call> if Chary popped. Of course I wasn't really being serious... so when I came back, I find our MNK/NIN engaged with Chary and I was like O.O;;;;

I've only done 3 Chary fights, including this one, and seen about 2 more while camping ToD. He's really easy with a tank that has C+ rating in EVA wearing +EVA gear with /NIN. Also a BRD that can play double mambo on the tank. We got the MNK/NIN to tank, wearing full EVA gear while the RDMs cured and landed enfeebles. I played double mambo on him, did Earth Threnody to help keep Carnage Elegy stuck on Chary.

The real key is not to over due it on this guy. Take it slow and do NOT let your other melee attack. Chary likes to spam his TP moves, especially that AoE one that strips shadows. It's just not good for your tank to start eating consecutive AoE moves because you have melee giving him too much TP. If you do bring melee, have them kill other mobs around the area to gain TP to WS on Chary.

Once again congrats to Zakari on getting his Joy Toy ^.^
My experience

(I also posted this on the Joyeuse page, but just for you others...)

He's really not too hard... You just really have to watch out for the water elemental behind the door...THAT'S your biggest problem.

Well the first day, three of us were camping it...competing against some RMT. Chary popped and RMT claimed, I started gathering some reinforcements. RMT wiped, but by the time all of my reinforcements got down to Chary, RMT had recovered and had like 50 back ups >.> I couldn't find a tank anyways... but at least I had ToD.

So let's see, I got up at 7 am the next day to camp chary...managed to find 3 people to help me: RDM (me), WHM, NIN, and a PLD/BRD hehe...yes, a PLD/BRD. We had other competetion, but about 15 minutes before Chary popped, they left. ^_~ yay us. We claimed it and we were doing really well...however, being the stupid RDM I am..I stood by the door and aggroed the water elemental...tried to keep it slept...but just wasn't working. We died. Luckily, no one had heard about Chary being up, and no one else came to camp it. We raised and rested up, and claimed him again. This time I stood at the end of the ramp and we took it down. Was a lil scary, our PLD died once but he raised and was unweakened before too long. NIN had bat earrings, and the PLD was singing mambo... DEAD!

{Chrissie obtains a Joyeuse.} Yay me! ^_^

<3 <3 <3 Like to shout out my thanks to Docj, Eman, and Burrfoot on Garuda! <3 <3 <3

I just wanted to lay down my frustrating experience with this guy.

I spawned this guy solo and had a hard time finding help. I finally did, but I was uncomfortable with it. (me73pld,70pld,75rng,70+bst(never conned him). The pld says something like "lol, can't you solo it <bst name>?" He was reffering to the single devil manta by charby. So, we were unbuffed and not 100% on mp and the bst jumps in and attacks charby.... Needless to say charby made QUICK work of the manta and came upon us. The moment his first few attacks went through I knew it was over. We barely touched his hp and he blew through the bst/my/other pld's mp in a flash. We wiped... luckily a bst was xping i area and he raised us. At this point another group came down and prepared to take charby. My members left to go do o-hat run and left me alone, pleading to join them (seeing as i did spawn it...) and despite the efforts of one kind person in the group, they engaged without me. They wiped first time (to my delight) but got it second time. They appeared to be a 75thf/nin, 71war/nin, 75mnk/nin, 75whm, 75brd,75rdm, 75thf/nin. One thing from what I observed during the fight tha seems to be no-where on posts below is that this is a LONG fight. The fight lasted at least 20min, maybe loner. Could a pld have tanked him? yes, his attacks only hit me for 80-100 about, but it attacks like a Krakken club. If you must have pld tank, I woul suggest at a minimum 2whms, a brd, and a rdm to keep mp up. But as stated many times, evasion tank is MUCH better choice. Charby has poor acc i must admit, I evaded him fairly well even as having pld evasion and -2 AGI on top of my F AGI rating. I think the easiest(though longest) way to kill is to pretty much have tank (thf or nin) be only person to engage so that aoe doesnt hit other melee's, wasting precious mp. Others can use ranged (the 71 war was doing this, sadly he hit maybe 5/99 times) or only engage after charby uses a tp move, then move when it is time to do it again.

Though I lost my spawn (and respect for those people who wouldnt let me in as i knew some of them from xp quite well...) I learned some stuff. Seriously, evasion tank is only way to do it without MAJOR whm power. He has tons of hp, 700+dmg asuran fists and rampages barely scratched his hp pool. And watch pop on manta, can cause issues.

Edit: Got sword today, not hitches. nin,thf,sam,rdm,whm,brd,me(pld/rdm). Parsed fight, Charby had about 19,000 hp.

Hi.

I am soloing placeholders pretty comfortably @ 68 rdm. Stone3 and Thunder2 with Sleep1 are pretty much all I use with Blink and Stoneskin.
Tonight, I lvled to 69, so Aero3 should help out alot.

I was using Mithra RSE because I forgot AF in storage (yeah, I know, gg).
No food, and just resting. Didn't have to Convert.

Will be camping this ******* tomorrow.

Good luck to you other rdms.

When I get ToD, I'll post here for Garuda.

Right after noon today.
Good luck.

BTW the placeholders can be easily killed solo as a RDM/BLM. NIN or /NIN is not needed. You may have issues when your stoneskin drops, but you can recast it and keep melee'ing. I solo these things as a 73RDM/BLM and at one point had 2 devil mantas on me. I just slept the add and killed it after I was done with the first one.
