General Information

    • There are two that spawn in this area, but the one that alternates pop locations (can spawn inside or outside of the room) is the placeholder mob. Despite its placeholder's spawn pattern, Charybdis will always spawn inside the room.

  • Respawn time is approximately 8 hours after its last Time of Death.

  • Immune to Sleep. Susceptible to Stun, Slow, Bind, Blind, and Paralysis. Susceptible to Gravity, but builds a resistance over time.

  • Is capable of attacking multiple times per attack round.

Charybdis Special Attacks

  • Hard Membrane: Self target Evasion boost. (Effect can be dispelled).

  • Tentacle: Single target physical attack.

  • Ink Jet: Frontal cone AoE magic damage with additional Blind effect.

  • Cross Attack: Single target two-hit physical attack.

  • Whirlwind: AoE Wind based magic damage with an additional Vitality down effect (Circle of effect originates from mob).

  • Maelstrom: AoE Water based magic damage with additional an Strength down effect (Circle of effect originates from mob).

  • Regeneration: Self target Regen effect. (Effect can be dispelled).

Historical Information

In Greek mythology, Charybdis is a sea monster that is said to take the form of a gargantuan mouth that sucks in and spits out enormous volumes of water three times a day. The daughter of the ocean god Poseidon and earth goddess Gaia, she was originally a naiad until she stole the cattle of Geryon from Heracles, which angered Zeus and caused him to transform her into a monster.

She resided along the side of a strait of water within an arrow shot's distance of Scylla, another sea monster that took on the form of a creature with six vicious dog-heads atop incredibly long necks. Ships passing through the strait would have to decide between passing close to Scylla's domain to avoid Charybdis, or vice versa. They would almost always choose the Scylla side, as while passing by Scylla would ensure that some of the crew would be killed, passing near Charybdis could result in the destruction of the entire ship.

It is believed that this myth is the origin of the phrase, "Between a rock and a hard place", referring to being forced to make a choice where both options are difficult.

Camped it for about 2hrs roughly last nite just killing the PH for sport and really just seeing if I could at least see a group kill it so I could come back and get my Joyeuse later. Well while out of the room looking at the other mobs it spawned. Killing my lvl 61 WHM friend with ease. Then came after the lvl 60 SMN (my gf). Yea you guessed it, death. I got back in the room to see them drop and hide in the corner with sneak.

I called my LS, got 4 of them to come 75 nin, 68 brd, 75 rdm, 70+ rng (I so can't remember). The nin pretty much soloed it while the rng assited with some dmg. Was an easy fight for the most part. One Devil Manta link that I killed and all was well. Got my sword...I'm a happy pld...

Wanted to share my two cents on this little monkey in case this helps anyone for the future. I think that SE has gone through and changed the spawn times on a few of the NM's around wonderland here, and this guy is one of them. I have read a lot of information about camping this NM and the spawn time a lot of people seem to agree with was 8-12 hours. A buddy of mine said that he thought it had been changed to 2-12 and I think that he is right.

Last night I watched him die to a rather remarkable party at 12:16am. So I set my alarm for 8:16am thinking that was when the window would start. I camped the PH's till 12:30pm and nothing. I had to run off and help a friend and low and behold an hour after I run off he popped, and was sitting there unclaimed for the longest time before finally being smoked at like 2:30pm. So I thought I would watch what would happen for round 2, cause the only way that I figured that would explain his sudden appearance 1 hour after window would be that he is on a 2-12 hour window and he was smoked between 2:16am and 8:16am. So I came back down there at 8:30ish and look who was sitting there staring at me when I opened the door.

6 hours from when I knew he had died last, and that was just when I had seen him. He could have been up and hour or even 30 minutes before I had seen him that second time. So in my mind at any rate I think my buddy is right. Seems to be 2-12 hour marker we are looking at now. Makes getting him a bit more annoying methinks.

As for killing him, some people go with overkill, but I have personally watched a Thf, Rng, and a Whm kill him. I wouldn't suggest that route though as it was a crazy crazy battle the whole 9 yards, not to mention long long long. Common tactics my buddies say that it can be killed with a Ninja, Bard, and a Whm (I did this kind of Trio battle personally) if you are desperate, but they say add a DD into there and you are golden.

Was camping this NM for about 4 hours, had a Ninja and friends set to come help me defeat this NM. Except, it was mainly friends of a PLD friend of mine who would of helped me get the Joyeuse for him and myself. The ninja logged off after camping Niddogg, so then I basically had no way to fight this mob. An LS began to move in and clear the area. The NM eventually popped.

Being fustrated with my waste of time, I chainspelled, elemental sealed and tried to Sleep II it, but it failed. Was buffed so I survived the first round of attacks. Used gravity to buy me a second of time, but it ran off fast and I was clocked with 2 attacks for 150+ damage, then 4 straight attacks for 150+ damage again, so I died fast.

I made a statement that I would not leave the grotto until I received the sword, we are most likely going to try again, this time with a party, but the PLD insists that he gets the first Joyeuse because his Nin friend wants him to. Sigh. I wish I had that something called friends.. ; ;.

Now except for the ranting here is some tips on camping it:

2 Devil Mantas spawn in the NM room. I am a level 70 Red Mage and both checked as Decent Challenge to me.

First Manta I took using sword and buffs. It got difficult because the Manta was hitting my stoneskin for 40-50 damage, taking it down in about 5-6 hits, especially with crits and frequent double attacks. Using almost all of my MP, I was able to defeat it, the fight was tough and my Enhancing is capped, with an Enhancing Torque and still had some trouble dealing with the blows.

Eventually, I began to get 'lazy' using Sleep spells, then binding, enfeebling (none DoT), and using Aero III and Drain to wear down the manta over time. Due to the respawn time, I could nuke, Convert, nuke until death then heal, and have Convert ready again for the next pop. Took no damage what so ever using this method. Other jobs at 70, especially those not subbing NIN will have a very hard time killing these placeholders, I recommend bringing friends, especially ones that can help you get the Joyeuse if the NM does pop. ; ;. Good luck to anyone camping this.

I feel your pain I am in the same fix, been after it for two weeks and all my friends in HNMLS so with them camping the NMs and this things pop times it makes it hard to plan for when people can and cannot come out to help kill or help pop. I said the same thing about not leaving the grotto until I had my sword but then I got tired of sitting there watch LS after LS get chary and get their swords so I left. I hope to get the sword eventually one day.

Right after I got ToD for this baby, some friends from my LS and I headed there 6 hrs later. We killed all the mantas as they popped. As we closed in to the 8hr mark, 2 mantas popped at the same time, which was kinda weird. 15 mins later there it was, the NM popped. Fight was easy, NIN and War duo tanked it. We owned it and now I have my Joyeuse ^_^.

Thank you all that helped me.

With a Nin or Thf he can be taken down with 3-4 people.. we found it's best to have a smn for stoneskin cuz his AoE can hit very hard sometimes and Ecliptic Howl also helps.

We took him with:
74nin/37war
75brd/37whm
65brd/32whm
60smn/30whm(me since I couldnt tank him anless we had atleast 2 whms)
73rdm/36blm

We also had a 75sam/37nin but he DC'd in the middle of the fight.
With double mambo from the 75brd and stoneskin from titan the ninja almost never took any dmg, very long fight tho.
We got Joyeuse 3k and Oxblood.

A 75 PLD friend gave me the TOD on Chary and we went to camp it 12 hour later. There were 2 Devil Matas up in the room. We killed 2 sets of them and it spawned in place of the first manta on the 3rd spawn...so the 12 hour spawn seems rather accurate to me. After Chary spawned he called on people from his LS and I did mine. We ended up with:

75PLD X 2
71WHM, 74 WHM
71 MNK, 74 MNK
70 RNG
72 THF
71 RDM, 75 RDM
75 BLM
75 SAM (RNG sub)

I thought it was gonna be rough since we had no NIN tank and no BRD for Elegy. Well I was very wrong. We owned Charybdis rather well. The other 75 PLD and I co-tanked it and kited it. The RDMs kept gravity on as often as possible, but even when it wore we were able to stay alive rather well. Fight maybe took 15 minutes if that. When it got to about 15% HP the other PLD invincible and straight up tanked it. Everybody unleashed and we killed it. Dropped Joyeuse, Pearl, and Shall Shell. ALong with about 2500ish gil and like 35 exp. We could have done it with less people.

The sword...omg. It's sooooo hawt for PLD. With WAR subbed I double attack 80% of the time. In exp parties I get TP so unbelievably quik it's unreal (compared to my previous Company Sword). This was my dream item and I'm very pleased with it. It's very very hawt for PLD.

Also drops Pearl. In a small alliance (7 people) he gaves 3000gil each, Pearl, Joyeuse and two Water Crystals (and about 30exp)
Charbydis
# Apr 29 2005 at 2:18 AM Rating: Decent
camped him a total of 14 times Charbydis has a 8-12 hour spawn timer after death means not lees then 8 hours and as many as 12 hours before he can pop the thing about 2 mantas being in room is only 50% true
if 2 are in room check spawn rate of hardest manta at 74 one was EP other DC if DC manta is spawning at 10 minutes and not 15 minutes tell your team to be ready because all 14 times Charby poped within 1 hour of DC manta spawning at 10 minutes...now 14 times for friends 15th time for me in about 9 hours lol setup ( Nin 72-75 Rdm 68-75 brd 66-75) we had 72 nin 70 rdm 70 brd 68 whm 69 blm and me 74 pld about 11 of 14 times)

A ninja tank is not always needed nor a full alliance. Killed Charybdis recently with 12 ppl with pld tanking. We all thought we were going to die but we survived ; got joyeuse and some gil. Difficulty of Charybdis is random, since it was extremely easy, no one died and i have fought it with full 18 ppl alliance and still failed. We 've had alot of mages which probably allowed us to win. Lvl range of the alliance was 68-75.

Helped out some good friends and their LS take this guy down today. As a BRD at level 63 I wsa a little scared, but I basically cast dual CHR+ then Dual Mambo, ran to mages and dual ballad... rinse repeat.

He hits pretty hard and pretty fast and has quite a few AoE attacks (that I have blocked for battle spam reasons). Dropped a Pearl for us as well as Oxblood and Joyeuse.

Was glad I could be the Mambo *****.. made 2362 gil and 30 exp off him ^^

I told my LS i'm not leaven SSG till i have this sword. 4 days later, i'm still here in the same spot, sept for a few short tirps to norg i havent left the room he spawns in. Watched many-o-linkshell come and kill him, as for me? I'll just sit and watch, and wait, and hope that my day will come...
Tanking
# Feb 23 2005 at 1:20 PM Rating: Decent
This thing does attack like a shotgun on wheels, but he has crap for accuracy. I had a THF tank mine with double-Mambo, Just let the thf get hate or else! It was funny to watch our THF tank it, whenever a RNG used Slugshot/Sidewinder, it flew up the pathway and smaked the RNG to death. But seriously, a THF can thank this thing forever, but i would advise a NIN to do it (none were available to help me at the time w) because nin has decent evasion, and with either double haste or double mambo, can also tank this thing forever (ya need a WHM and/or RDM to deal with his AOE..) he dies quickly-ish.... very quickly witha NIN tanking so RNG and BLM dont have to cower in fear.

Note that THF has higher evasion then NIN, not to mention the evasion bonus job trait. Reason for a NIN would be Kurayami/Hojo.
Can be duo'd by RDM+NIN or similar setup, just takes (alot) time. Killed it with NIN75+RNG75+WHM75+BRD75(wanted sword).
Tank should use Bat Earringx2 and blind potions (or hope for Inkjet). bring erase since it does AoE VIT and STR down attacks (and like's them). Also be careful since Water Elemental do spawn close and are deadly (waterga/poisonga knocks off utsusemi of ur tank).
Add for pop time: SE obviously changed it to a 24hr timer. Tried to camp it with a RDM75 friend starting 5hrs after last death. Didn't repop unilt 23hrs after death (means we camped there 18hrs nonstop). I came there ~21hrs later and he popped around 1hr10mins after (aka 22hrs and a bit repop).
Also there are always 2 PH in the room now with 15min repop timer each.
Woot!

Helped camp this guy for about 6 hours over 2 days. My party consisted of BRD 58 (me,) BRD 70, RDM 72, WHM ???, and a NIN ???. (I dunno their levels ; ; they were on anon~ I'm guessing 70+) Funny thing was, the RDM had said in party chat "Damnit! No more devils!" and about 5 secs later the NM spawned. XD NIN tanked it, and me and the other BRD doubled mambo and march on him, while the WHM hasted us all and cured the NIN when his utsu died off. Battle lasted about 30 or 25 mins in all, and it droped Joyeuse (isen't it a 100% chance drop? I could be wrong) and a few water crystals. We got about 8k gil and 96 exp. Was fun fun. :D
Spawn Rate
# Feb 18 2005 at 6:30 AM Rating: Decent
I just got done camping this NM for the past 4-5 days to get my sword. I was present for every spawn from the time I first got Time of Death. That is 6 spawns total. I can say with resonable certainty spawn window is 8-16 hours. Here are the respawn times I collected in my stay in SSG: 16th hr, 12th hr, 10.5 hr, 8th hr x2, 10th hr. It is not 12-24, 21-24. If it was something other than 8-16 it would be 8-24, but latest spawn I saw was 16th hour, so I go with 8-16, plus I heard this from some japanese players.

Yes, you do have to kill placeholders it will not spawn on its own. All that about two spawning in room and what not, not true. Doesn't matter if two are spawning in room or one inside and one outside doesn't tell you about window being open or closed.

The hours I give are approximate too, he did not pop on the hour, it was plus or minus anywhere from a couple minutes to 15-20. It all depended on when you killed placeholders. Respawn rate of placeholders is 10-15 mins.

If you can get people to camp with you, it would make your life a lot easier. I watched this NM die 6 times before I finally got it because I had to wait for people to come. Blink tank (NIN, THF) not a must, but will make fight much easier, only other way would be to kite it and that just sounds like headache. I saw it taken down with alliance in a few mins and with as few as 3 people in about an hour (BRD, NIN, WHM, and the BRD and the WHM died 3/4 of way through fight, but WHM did have RR and they ended up finishing fight).

To all those seeking this sword, good luck hope this info helps. I hope I never have to camp this dumb fish ever again =P.

spawn
# Feb 06 2005 at 3:14 AM Rating: Good
ok ive camped this 4 times now (all stolen by JP) and i have found how its TOD system works. it is 8+ hour lotto spawn. this means that it cannot pop for 8 hours after its TOD. it can be over a day for it to pop or only a few mins.

Devil Mantras will pop every 10-15 mins. they can be solod with difficulty by a 75 pld/37 nin (thats best optionb for soloing) and with ease by rdm.

you get to his Room by hugging the left wall once you enter from Yuhtunga Jungle to Sea serpant grotto. once you reach the room with the eyes on the top floor hug the right and you will reach the gold beastcoin door. open the door by trading a gold beastcoin to it. now you will need sneak here if you didnt before. hug the left wall til you see a waterfall make a right and follow the path until you see a cliff. make a left and fall down the left slope of the cliff. continue forward and drop again. and one more time until your on a floor that is prodominently covered with Kraken.

now make a left from the path you were following and you should see a <blacnk name> door like the one on your way to norg. pop this open and you should see a NPC at the very end and 1-2 Devil Mantra's inside.

Charybdis window is open if there are 2 Devil Mantras in room. if one spawns in room after you kill thats ok because window is still open. heres the boring part: 10-15 min respawn on those and very low chance of NM spoawning.

once NM spawns he is relatively easy to take down. he can be trio'd by rdm brd and nin but suggested pt set up is brd rdm whm nin nin and either a thf or somene /thf to put hate on ninjas. he attacks like a kraken club and can hit 2-6 times per swing. have your bard/s cast mambox2 on your ninja for evasion boost.

not much to it after this and enjoy your new Joyeuse and possibly Oxblood.
8hr lot pop
# Feb 05 2005 at 7:53 PM Rating: Good
After camping him for 24 hours straight and having friends on the 3rd time i can say with full confidence he is an eight hour lot pop period.

8 hours after it dies you kill the place holders and out comes chary.

He can easily be trio rdm brd nin (IF AND ONLY IF the nin realizes cross attack eats 2 shadows) taru nin may be good but if they ***** up once its over.
; ;
# Feb 02 2005 at 8:44 PM Rating: Default
ok i just had a really bad experience with this NM. ok i had been camping him for about 8 hours straight trying to pop with friend. 2 JP's had been killing mobs outside trying to pop a NM out there (i think minstrels coat NM) anyway Chary finially pops. i get all excited and i do a /wave to him....bad idea. i /tell some ppl to come to SSG and help me, anyways they re gathering outside SSG when they see a JP alliance run right by them....JP's run and steal chary. they kill him and sword went to a 68 pld ><.

NM is 8-24 hour lottery pop. which means anywhere between those 8-24 hours he can pop IF YOU KILL PLACEHOLDERS this means once he has been killed, for the next 8 hours only 1 devil mantra will pop, once the 8 hour mark has hit 2 will start spawning. eventually Chary will pop. best thing to do is wait 21 hours after he was killed and start killing placeholders.

killed it tonight with full alliance of 60-75. first time we fought this so knew it was gonna be a learning experience... well, it sure was... total wipeout... so we all raised up and full heal and go again... this time pld tried to tank it straight up... that didn't work either... so we finally got smart and just took off running with whoever had aggro. everyone else would just spam spells and arrows and if they got hate, just take off running (gravity a must, duh) well, this turned out to be way more effective. He died, Arrowin got joyeuse (congrats ^^) and now we've learned from this experience. {fun} and {excitement} {can I have it?} and spawn is not 21-24 hours... much shorter
