Historical Information

Qilin (Kirin in Japanese) was a creature in Chinese mythology said to have the head of a dragon, the antlers of a deer, the scales of a fish, the hooves of an ox, and the tail of a lion. It is said that the Qilin is a benevolent creature, only becoming violent when a good person is threatened by a sinner, in which, among other ways, it will attack the sinner by breathing fire.

While the dialogue spoken by Kirin when he is spawns suggests that he is one of the Shijin of East Asian mythology (see Seiryu, Suzaku, Genbu, and Byakko), he is never in actuality associated with them, but is another prominent creature.

Holy **** I was playing a used copy of FF tactics advanced that I picked up a little bit ago, and I got my cat chick to turn into a SMN. I was like "Yes, total pwnage, lets go see what summons I can get. *Checks shop* Hmmm. Ifrit, Ramuh, Carbuncle, nice nice... wait....what was that? KIRIN?!?!?! THE MANTICORE PIMP?!?! *buys staff, equips and sets Kirin ability, runs into quick clan battle*" All I can say is, Kirin blows on tactics. He's a wimpy wolf that casts regen on everyone, which doesn't make sense at all. He's like a meaner looking Carbuncle. Is Kirin a historical creature? Is he supposed to be like the Manticore above or like a stupid wolf that heals people?

As stated earlier, he was an Esper in FFVI, one of the first you get. Pretty cool how they carried him over to here.

I know its hard to see on the tiny GBA screen, but kirin would is supposed to be depicted as more horse like than wolf. Really not sure why they made kirin the manticore in this game. The FF games have actually been pretty good with equating their creatures to the mythical monsters that spawned them. (Except for bahamut I'm not sure how they turned an arabic fish into a great dragon, although there is some speculation that the translations is supposed to be behemoth not bahamut)Kirin (also can be known as qirin in chinese mythology as harnao mentioned) was the Oriental equivilant of the Unicorn. A pure noble creature that punished sinners with its single horn.

It should also be noted that Kirin is a damn fine Japanese beer.

I am just speculating, but they probably used manticore, cause there's no "horse-like" mobs on the FFXI game. and in order to do this, developers would have to make one, and it's a lil too late to do that. cause normally every mob in the game is just a different colored, could be bigger/smaller, than it's predecessors.

however, i could be wrong and they want it to look that way.

Is Kirin a historical creature?

Kirin has a few listings according to my research. It's mainly the name of a provence of Northeast China, formerly known as Manchuria.

The mythical creature, though, is of Japaneese myth. Generally spelled Qilin, but is also spelled Kylin, Kay-lun, or Kirin (Kirin is apparently the most often used Japaneese spelling)

It is a mythical hooved Chinese creature that is said to appear in conjunction with the arrival of a sage. It is a good omen that brings rui roughly translated as "serenity" or "prosperity"). It is often depicted with what looks like fire all over its body.

Although it looks fearsome, the qilin only punishes sinners. It can walk on grass and yet not trample the blades and it can also walk on water. Being a peaceful creature, its diet does not include flesh.

Japanese art tends to depict the qilin as more deer-like than in Chinese art. The word kirin has come to be used in modern Japanese for a giraffe.

Interestingly, in the Chinese hierarchy of mythological animals, the qilin is ranked as the second-most powerful creature after the dragon, but in Japan, the kirin occupies the top spot.

Simply type "149-101,Kirin", without quotation marks, anywhere in the list and then open your model viewer program and scroll down to Kirin.

kirin's speech

for those that are curious, here is his opening line:

"I am Kirin, Master of the Shijen. The one who stands above all.
You, who have risen above your mortal status to contend with the gods... It is time to reap your reward."

and when you beat him:

"You have transcended your limitations, Mortal.
I must thank you... You have freed me from this loathsome prison."

you only see this speech and get the title when you are part of the main alliance engaged to Kirin. This can be tough to get in if you are not a Rng, Blm, Nin, or Mnk.

btw, kirin ranges from extremely tough to slightly boring depending on how many people you have. 25 or less people and you are gonna have your hands full. 40 or more and you will probably get bored quick.

You CAN but it's very RARE. Waste of MP IMO. Stun is about 10%-30% and silence is probably ~3% as a stick. Even with equipment + food that gives me +51 mnd and enfeebling magic maxed at lvl 75 +8 more from merit points AND an auster's staff, I have silenced him ONE time out of probably 40 casts...so I don't even bother trying any more. The best thing to do is simply to run out of range when he is casting stone V or stonega IV. Gravity sticks fairly well (fairly well=~30-40% with 70+52 int + auster's staff)on him though and our BLM have manage to hit him with choke a few times since he is weak to wind. Also, he is not that hard of a mob. We have never even came close to wiping to him. As long as you have the support to take out the mini gods quicky and efficiently, he is poon. 4 osode, 2 crimson legs, 3 hectacomb harness, 3 kirin's poles, 2 shining cloth, 2 shura togi...and counting...

At first this guy was a pain, but rangers are the key to bringing this guy down. Last weekend we did our usual Kirin run and with 6 rangers in main alliance he went down in 30 minutes, gods and all. However no Osode either time, so i'm 0-3 so far for the drop, (/sigh). He is weak to wind but hard to not get resist. Usually we have tank pt and two other parties with rangers and blm switching out when dead or out of MP. He is a fun fight^^

Kinda humerous that this monster is really a giraffe.

Yeah, the Japanese named the giraffe after the Qi Lin because giraffes are strange looking animals with deer/horse qualities that live near deserts and have fleshy horns. Its sorta like how we named Lemurs after the Roman spirits of the restless dead because at night thier howls and shining eyes were spooky.

Although "Kirin" currently means Giraffe in japanese, it's meaning in this context is not that.

"Kirin" comes from the Chinese characters "Qi Lin" (pronounced "chee leen") and refers to a mythical beast more akin to a Unicorn.

From about.com

Quote:
It has the body of a deer, the tail of an ox, and the hooves of a horse. Its short horn, which grows out of its forehead, is made of flesh; its coat, on its back, is of five mixed colors, while its belly is brown or yellow. It is so gentle that when it walks it is careful not to tread on the tiniest living creature and will not even eat live grass but only what is dead. Its appearance foretells the birth of an
upright ruler. To wound the Chinese Unicorn or to come across its dead body is unlucky. The span of this animal's natural life is a thousand years.
When Confucius' mother bore him in her womb, the spirits of the five planets brought her an animal "having the shape of a cow, scales of a dragon, and a horn on its forehead." This is the way Soothill reports the annunciation; a variant of this given by Wilhelm tells that the animal ap- peared on its own and spat out a jade tablet on which these words were read: Son of mountain crystal (or of the essence of water), when the dynasty crumbles, thou shalt rule as a throneless king.
Seventy years later, some hunters killed a k'i-lin which still had a bit of ribbon around its horn that Confucius' mother had tied there. Confucius went to look at the Unicorn and wept because he felt what the death of this innocent and mysterious animal foretold, and because in that ribbon lay
his past.
In the thirteenth century, a scouting expedition of the Emperor Genghis Khan, who had undertaken the invasion of India, met a creature in the desert "like a deer, with a head like that of a horse, one horn on its forehead, and green hair on its body," which addressed them, saying, "It is time for your master to return to his own land." One of Genghis' Chinese ministers, upon consultation, explained to him that the animal was a chio-tuan, a variety of the k'i-lin. "For four years the great army has been warring in western regions he said. "Heaven, which has a horror of bloodshed, gives warning through the Chio-tuan. Spare the Empire for Heaven's sake; moderation will give boundless pleasure." The Emperor desisted in his war plans. Twenty-two centuries before the Christian era, one of the judges of the Emperor Shun was in possession of a "one horned goat" which refused to attack the wrongly accused but would butt the guilty. Margoulies' Anthologie raisonee de la litterature chinoise
(I948) includes this mysterious, soft-spoken allegory, the work of a ninth-century writer of prose:
It is universally held that the unicorn is a super natural being and of auspicious omen; so say the odes, the annals, the biographies of worthies, and other texts whose authority is unimpeachable. Even village women and children know that the unicorn is a lucky sign. But this animal does not figure among the barnyard animals, it is not always easy to come across, it does not lend itself to zoological classification. Nor is it like the horse or bull, the wolf or deer. In such circumstances we may be face to face with a unicorn and not know for sure that we are. We know that a certain animal with a mane is a horse and that a certain animal with horns is a bull. We do
not know what the unicorn looks like.

o boy kirin! First off, idk what ppl think/say, Kirin will summon a god whenever he feels like it, it has nothing to do with how long you fight, or his current HP or w/e. He will however, astral flow around 50% HP. Best idea, one tank, kite it, one RDM support, NO ONE ELSE ENGAGE! have everyone deal with gods ASAP. Even when theyre done, ranged attack and nukes ONLY on kirin, that tail hurts! I mean, the less people taking a Stonega V the better, and with ranged attack, it can be avoided. If you want more people dead, go ahead and send in meele, idk. Fight just takes a long time once all the gods are done. The more Rangers/BLMS the better. Also tell the MNKs to get some damded MND gear and sub WHM for chi blast, even though a monk will likley slap the hell out of you for asking him to sub WHM for the astoundingly small MND increase to improve Chi blast. But for kirin, MNK/WHM is prefered lol call me crazy! but it works! If not, MNK/WAR is fine since odds are the MNK wont have WHM 37 available and its a very small MND increase. Also, you do NOT need a stun line on kirin himself, he will resist 70% of your stuns, yet they will still take hate off the Kiter (if he sucks lol) Anyhoo GL on kirin, he's a blast and a half!

hey, as long as the guy knows what he's talking about, i say in a very noble and loud proclamating voice: "Let him post, young n00b, let him post." after all, our ls did a very similar strategy to beating kirin quite recently and ended up beating him in 47 minutes (which for us is record time XD).
RE: Eep! Kirin!
# Jan 07 2005 at 1:51 PM Rating: Good
um... even a little bit of MND increase is worth it, it's just that much more damage that you can do. There is a MNK on my server that has done 1400+ chi blast to Kirin with WHM sub and full MND gear.

There are many other advantages to having WHM sub too, you can help out the mages by giving Raise I's out so hey don't have to bother with the MP wasting, not to mention Blink yourself after you get a huge chi blast out because you WILL be tanking for a short time, Erase, and many other spells to choose from.

Any MNK who plans on going to 75 should always level WHM to 37 at some point or another. Never half-*** the job or you will only do half-*** the damage.
RE: Eep! Kirin!
# Jan 05 2005 at 6:57 AM Rating: Default
Ok so you're saying to tell the MNKs to sub WHM cause the MND increase is worth it for the Kirin fight but then you're saying that if they want to sub WAR it's no big deal?
RE: Eep! Kirin!
# Jan 02 2005 at 9:22 AM Rating: Decent
MNK/WHM increases mnd and gives blink^^
Blink saved our mnk/whm many times because of the sudden big dmg chi blast does the mnk had to be the kiter alot.

# Dec 22 2004 at 11:16 AM Rating: Excellent
Meh, he's nowhere as hard as people make him out to be. The only hard part is getting the mini-gods dead. Once those are gone, you're really in the clear.

The mini-gods have 1/4 of *every* attribute with the exception of their physical and magical attacks. Landing debuffs and spells for full power are very easy to do on these. They *DO* 2HR so you're going to still have to be on your toes and act as if they're the real thing. If you slack off, you're risking death because Kirin CAN and WILL continue to summon the remaining ones whether you've killed your current one or not.

The first time my linkshell tried him we killed Genbu and Suzaku, but had trouble killing Seiryu quickly enough. So, he activated Hundred Fists and Byakko's running around killing the mages. Total wipe but it was a learning experience.

Everyone gets raised and heals up, and we decide to go again with our remaining set of seals. Mini-gods went down smoothly and we had everyone rest up while Team Kite did their thing. Then it was time to kill this *******. I recommend a blink tank kite Kirin if this is your first run. Deadly Hold and Tail Swipe will do 800+ damage as well as Bind, so a PLD/WAR's a sitting duck. You *can* straight up tank it if you guys want, but for your first run it's better to kite until you feel more comfortable with him.

Well, we were ignorant and didn't pay attention to the day and noticed he was a lot tougher this time. We had overlooked that he was popped at the beginning of Earthsday, and he was pissed. Go us. We managed to win with crap drops (Damascus Ingot onry) and clocked in under 2 hours, counting mini-gods and all.

Black Mages, you're almost useless here. Your spells get resisted 90% of the time without MB, and around 60% with MB. You should be using Aeroga III to burst with whenever a Fragmentation or Light skillchain goes off. You guys rock on Genbu, Suzaku, and Seiryu, but against Byakko you're marginally effective, and against Kirin you're better replaced by a Ranger.

Kirin is a Manticore model and is weak to Wind. Being that he is a Manticore, he's also weak to ranged attacks so Ranger are the big guns in this one. More often than not, the Ranger will pull hate and then need to kite himself. Just deal with it until you lose hate then jump back in there.

For your first run, expect death for a few members. You're more than likely going to have a large group going and lag is going to be an issue, so you may not see him casting a spell at you. People will get more comfortable over time.

Kirin's favorite spells are Quake, Stone V, and Stonega IV. Just let a shadow eat Quake or Stone V, but run when he's doing Stonega IV. You have about a 5% chance of a Stun actually landing on him, so don't think about trying to rely on it. He does NOT attack and has Hundred Fists specials -- think of Faust in that respect but Kirin doesn't just use one ability like Faust.

Kirin is strong offensively and defensively, but incredibly stupid. His AI is made so that he not only stops frequently, but gets stuck weaving around the pillars in the room. Kiting is *very* easy as is reapplying shadows.

He's not that hard at all, but just takes a while.

Quick corrections.

The gods damage outputs are lower than their Ru'Aun Gardens counterparts. Example: Byakko in Gardens will hit 150-200 where as his Kirin Summoned form will hit 60-80. Seiryu's attack speed is reduced, etc. So every aspect is weaker.

Black Mages are very powerful vs Kirin, but they need the right gear. Threndony + Doton help jack up the Black Mages effectiveness as well as SC's for magic bursts. MBs vs Kirin will hit for full and with an army of BLM watching Kirin lose 6000hp in one chain is not ineffective by any stretch, especially when you can swap in and out Fragmenation makers (/sam).

I've never seen stun land. Quite honestly if stun did land he would be easily killable by a ninja tank. I'm gonna say hes stun immune like King Behemoth.

Kirin does not have Hundred Fists, he simply has unlimited TP so he spams WS. There are a few rare occasions where he will take a regular swing at you, but those are far and few between.

Hundred Fists specials in in referrence to his speed of doing them, not the 2HR dust swirl motion.

I've seen Stun land twice and it really didn't stun him at all. This was around the 3rd/4th time we took him on, though.

Your ninjutsu Doton may land, but your Threnody will not. Bards are ranked C in song skills and any bard that tries to say he can land songs on Kirin with ease is ************ you. I've personally tried using an Auster's Staff with a Sorrowful Harp on Windsday on Kirin (was around 1:30~ when he popped on that day) and after 20 tries with +112 CHR from Etudes I gave up. Bards can't effectively land any songs on Gods aside from Finale occassionally and anyone trying to say otherwise is lying through his teeth.

Skillchains reduce the chance of a burst being resisted already, but even with maxed merit in Elemental Skill and INT (not to mention the right equipment) it's still not uncommon for MBs to get resisted. BLM are GREAT for Kirin.......IF their MBs land. If they don't, they're nothing more than a waste of a slot that would be better served by a Ranger.

As far as the reduced damage potential we've yet to see it. Our main tank has 4/5 Koeing pieces, Defending Ring and a Soil Ring (doesn't like to use Jelly for the chance a magic spell gets through on a god) and he's stated several times the damage taken is the same. The alternate tanks state they've seen the same damage output as well so I have no clue why you're getting a reduction.
