Easy? HAH!

Air elementals are a low-level RDM's worst nightmare. I tried soloing one of these at level 31, with a pretty good MND stat, and I was getting my *** kicked so hard I hard to zone it.

For one, gravity has like a 10% proc rate vs Air elementals, because gravity is an air elemental spell. Usually, when I fight elementals, I silence it first, then gravity and kite the mob, using the appropriate elemental spell that it is weak to. With the air elemental, silence has a low proc rate, because it's a wind elemental enfeeble. If you get silence to land, great, you rock, but it's near impossible at the start of the fight. If you engage the air elemental, it will either use silence on YOU or it will use Blink. Both are horrible, because if you get silenced, you have to meele until silence wears off... which sucks if you're a BLM/RDM or SCH, or even WHM for that matter, if it casts Blink, you have to meele it until it's shadows are gone because if you try silencing it, one of the shadows will absorb it.

So, to be breif: I wouldn't try air elementals as any mage casting job really until you're high 40s, because it can be a pain.
Good Location Reference and Battle strategy

I use this site all the time to help me find spawn spots 4 just about everything and have found it extremely reliable.

http://www.ffxi-atlas.com/

This site will also tell u the lvl ranges for mobs in the selected area.

--- As a side note ---
I am a 53WHM/BLM.

This may not be entirely true (but in my experience it has proven to be so), I would say a WHM/BLM has a good chance (if not a slightly better) than other mage combinations at beating air elementals (I never touch anything that cons as EP, 5-10mins solo fights just arent worth it on a WHM).

I say this mainly because of a WHMs MND stat. Silence being a WHM spell will generally mean that you will resist it if you have a decently high MND stat (mine is 57+10), couple that with Baraera (this gives me 61 def against air attacks with my enhancing magic @ 108). True, your elemental spells will hit 4 a lower amount than if you had BLM as your main, but with the added defense that your MND stat and Baraera give you hardly need it (not 2 mention stoneskin soaking up all the dmg thrown at u).

When I fight the Air Elementals out in Tahrongi Canyon I usually do the following:

1) I will cast Frost on it, then make sure that I have Baraera and Stoneskin up. (Both Stoneskin and Baraera will last me the wntire fight without needing 2 b recast).

2) I engage with my weapon (Blessed Hammer (WHM AF Club). This has no additional effect damage).

3) From here I will chuck in the occasional Blizzard (hits for roughly 80-90, with Elemental skill capped at 81), but generally I will just go hit 4 hit with it (I only hit 4 about 12, but it does the job).

Using this style of fighting I lose no HP (and any that I do lose while I am casting Frost and my buffs is quickly regained after stoneskin is up due to the WHMs Auto-Regen job trait) and at most I will use about 100 MP, having a total of 612 MP the amount used pitifully small (and allows room for plenty of imagination if you get bored), but also allows 4 easy chaining (if you can manage to find that many elementals quickly enuff).

My fights generally only take 1-2mins and going from the other posts and should only be a couple of mins b4 the next spanws at your location.

I usually hunt in Tahrongi Canyon and have found that starting in one of the 4 spawn locations that I can fight 1 then move 2 the next spawn spot and fight another and continue doing this until I have visited all of the spanws.

I unfortunately average 1 cluster per fight nad have only ever seen 2 clusters drop once and nothing more. I have never gotten singular crystals.

As a WHM/BLM I would say that your best tool 4 making sure ur elemental spells do some decent dmg cast Burn (not sure how much help the fire dmg over time will b against air elementals but the decrease in the mobs INT will definitely help you out).

Well thats all I have 2 say. If I have gotten anything wrong in this post (which I most probably have), please correct me.

I hail from Garuda server, my name is Bidski, if you need a hand farming these things and I'm not busy give me a yell and I will be mnore than happy 2 help you out.

The best jobs to solo eles are magic based.

WarMnk isn't all that great - also it depends where the elemental is
Air Elementals in Tahrongi
# Jan 19 2006 at 11:04 PM Rating: Decent
25MNK/12WAR. Can solo an Air Elemental in Tahrongi Canyon (with Dodge and Focus) at the crevice in between H-7/I-7. Also saw one near E-8. Takes me down to almost 1/2 HP. Not much of a problem.

Edit: However, note that I did have two Reflex Rings equipped. That only really equals out to +8 WND, though.

I am a lvl 28thf/14war and i own these all the time in tahrongi canyon. I always use bloody bolts in case things get a little tough, not to mention they do pretty good damage when you need to replenish hp. I get about 2 clusters per, sometimes three and in a span of a 30-40 min windy day i can get anywhere between 6 to eight of these in two spots i hunt them in the canyon. they have a 5 min respawn time after you kill them so if you can go to where another spawns and get back you can get a good chain going. And i am a woodworker (only 60 so far) so this help alot when i need gil to make lumber.
where to find him

If your looking for this guy in Tahrongi Canyon, look in the moutain between H-7 and I-7. Air Elemental shows up about 3 times each windy day.
Lvl 49 failure
# Jun 25 2005 at 9:19 AM Rating: Decent
Got to Lvl 49 WHM and decided to try one of these things in the maze. Bad Mistake. Unless you have a Max'd out staff skill and are using an added Ice Damage weapon, don't try to take these things out at any lvl of WHM under 50. Maybe they get stronger in certain areas, but the one in the Maze of Shakhrami still checked as Too Weak Low evasion and defence to me. This is just my experience... Thank god for reraise.

If you exit the Maze of Shakrami to Attowa Chasm, I've seen about 2 spawn points right there, and Wind I believe is a comment weather element in Attowa. My buddy had no problems on these with a level 60 PLD. I'm a 60 RDM and they were a walk in the park to me, but then again I believe an RDM has an advantage at takin these over a PLD.
wow i love th2

how many per crevice?

I think 3 spawn. One in each of 2 crevice, and one up around (D-6), (D-7). I know the 2 crevice are for sure but ive only seen the (D-6,7) once. Hope that helps.

What level?
# Feb 18 2005 at 2:28 PM Rating: Decent
I'm a WHM27/BLM13 right now, and am in need of wind crystals. Am I yet powerful enough to solo an air elemental? Or should I wait a few more levels?
RE: What level?
# Mar 09 2005 at 1:04 PM Rating: Decent
This also depends on where you are. air elem in canyon are much weaker than those in maze. Elementals are the mages easy prey. as far as weather to kill it or not try /check ing it for the con. Baraero -> stoneskin -> buffs -> wait for pop -> if alone silence if not dia/flash then silence -> and I use holy then banish at my current level (52) the holy knocks it down pretty far at this point. hitting these with weapons is a long fight in most cases, and air elem will blink self if unsilenced as well as aero aeroga. i usually get anywhere from 1-3 clusters per kill. and i usually get 1-3 elementals per storm.

It would probaly be better to wait till 30..my friend got killed in like 5 seconds trying to kill it at level 26..so at 30 you also have Banish II..that usually does alotta damage.

Scanned as too weak at 28 in La Theine Plateau. It took me down to maybe 3/4 health and 1/2 MP. Used blizzard a lot =P. Got 3 clusters off of the first one and 2 off the second.
sadstory.
# Dec 30 2004 at 2:00 PM Rating: Decent
ok i have a very sad story to tell you.

i was lvl 23 warrior/mnk saw one that checked as easy prey in tahrongi so i attacked it hoping for something to do one my way to windurst... it flat out owned me. I was hitting 3's with a maxed out sword skill and a longsword+1 and i was taking 20+... of corse ive never touched one since.

If you follow it with /follow, and attack it when it stops, SA will be succesful. This is how you know where the back is. =)

Plan on lvling woodworking? Farm about 30 of these and do lumber lvls 1-20 and you will make a good amount of gil just selling back to AH.
Pact?
# Dec 01 2004 at 6:24 PM Rating: Default
A question about elementals in general; I've heard that if you defeat one with an avatar, there's a chance it'll drop a pact of its element. I've also heard that pacts can only be obtained from BCNMs and certain monsters. Which is it?
EDIT:
Answered by my friend, yes. For all SMNs that want to try it out just wait for yourself to get powerful enough to take one down. I did mine as a 30SMN/15WHM with Silence. Also, if somebody else hits it first, then you won't get it (Just like when somebody gets the first hit on something and dies, then you get an easy kill. You still get no exp till it recovers to full again.)

the little mountain thingy just south of the crag,
there is an entrance on the north side,
there is a little open area inside it,
they usualy spawn in there.
if not inside, the around that little mountain.

i've also seen one spawn more souther, like just north of the pass, it had been gusting for a while when i found it, might have wandered pretty from spawn.
RE: spawn points?
# Nov 17 2004 at 8:13 AM Rating: Decent
They usually spawn South East of the crag but these tend to be overly camped by high level mages. The best place i have found on Valefor is a little cove area in I-7;H-7 where 2-5 spawn every gale. The only problem with this area is that bombs and ghosts also spawn here and unless you are a mage or level 30+ then they can be a little bit of a hassle. Im a Ranger 30 and the ghosts can take me down to half health
Air Clusters
# Nov 10 2004 at 8:45 PM Rating: Decent
Will the Air elemental still drop Wind Clusters if they are too weak to be worth while? Because im level 30 and i need gil, so if they are too weak, will clusters still drop? And im guessing you will need signet, right?

Clusters are given regardless of signet or no... so the drop will be there regardless.

# Nov 10 2004 at 1:38 PM Rating: Decent
In tahrongi they usually spawn without fail during gales in this little cove like area. 2-5 spawn here and its relatively uncamped in valefor i got 3 clusters in 15 min of camping so i was happy

H-7 I-7 is generally where I farm these in Tahrongi. Teleport-Mea, stand in the little crevice and wait. Generally I'm usually the only one who is there, some who'll see me will usually walk away. >> Even if there's someone else, I use Flash to grab. Though it doesn't beat Provoke [And I've seen a MNK who uses Chi Blast exclusively], it sometimes works if you're closer.

Fast fights for a 60WHM, lol. Holy doess 190-200+ and then do Blizzard and it's usually out. Drops 1-3 clusters, I mainly get 1 each time.

Jjiajia(Insert job) used to "farm" these on Kujata. Now if you do /sea all they're in Windy all the time.

La Theine has an annoying spawn area, as from what I've gathered, it can either be the cliff near the lake or the cliff near the Ronfaure enterance.. So I'm rarely there, as I'll get to it and it'll despawn. ; ;

Sells for about 2k-2.5k per on Kujata, Jeuno AH.

^^ Good luck hunting.
La Theine Plateau
# Oct 16 2004 at 9:54 AM Rating: Decent
Just defeated my first ever elemental today, found the air elemental in La Theine Plateau at roughly f-6 just near the exit ramp from the valley. I'm a RDM lvl 28 it checked as too weak but it wasnt much bother - took me to about half hp half mp. I got 1 wind cluster from it too.

Good luck hunting these things :)
