Through some twist of luck, I just got Argus after some 9 1/2 hours at his room. I took a fair beating as 50drg/war, had had my wyvern out since I'd gotten there so I could have another one if I had to Super Jump and she died, and proceeded to get a vial of mercury and 20 exp (the more useful of the 2, since I'm barely into level and could possibly lose it). I went ahead and told the exact ToD (with my time zone) in /say mode just to help the others.
Throughly thrilled to have seen Argus, even more so to have claimed and killed him with competition (2, 1 full AFK, other I guess was when it poped because I could barely see it and I saw him warp out after I killed it). But I am flat pissed to not get the drop knowing that the next pop will be sometime tomorrow (6:30AM kill, so between midnight and midnight on the 18-36hr scale).
On to the post title, if the whole idea of making it rare/ex was to reduce the number of campers, why would they not also make it 100%? I know most things aren't 100%, but low drop rate an long respawn was why the price was so high to begin with I think. I'm not that good when it come to NM camping competition-wise, so I may well not get it again for a long time.
Suggestions: (just because everyone probably has some) as is, make the drop 100%; if the idea is for everyone to be able to get one, make it like a 1hr forced spawn with the spawn point in the room and the drop rate unchanged or upped, heck make the item to spawn it only sold by the regional vendor for Kolshushu just not something that has to be farmed or that will get ridiculously expensive; or if it's supposed to be ridicuously hard to get, make it like a 4hr or 6hr forced spawn using like a maze chest key (just an example, something rare/ex) and put the spawn point behind the iron door (have to farm up both keys you see), and of course make the drop rate high (75-100%); if Argus is supposed to **** people off, give him some of his own placeholders, make him like a 1-2hr spawn, give him like a 10% drop rate for something thats used to spawn him again for like a 60% drop rate on the amulet if you can handle respawning him within say 1 minute, that makes it high levels and/or pt oriented (which is what they want us to do).
