  • Black Magic - Capable of casting all Black Magic available to a level 38 Black Mage

    • For elemental magic, Argus tends to favor Fire based spells.

  • Hex Eye- Frontal cone AoE gaze Paralysis effect.

  • Death Ray - Single target Darkness based magic damage.

  • Catharsis - Self target HP recovery effect.

Historical Information

In Greek mythology, Argus was a one hundred eyed giant ordered to guard the nymph Io (in the guise of a white cow) by Hera from Zeus. In order to re-claim Io, Zeus sends the god Hermes to slay Argus. In order to bypass the giant's tendency to always keep at least one eye open, the messenger god posed as a shephard and recited boring stories to Argus until each eye fell asleep before killing him. In honor of his service, Hera emblazened Argus's eyes on the tail feathers of the peacock.

Why is it not 100%?

Through some twist of luck, I just got Argus after some 9 1/2 hours at his room. I took a fair beating as 50drg/war, had had my wyvern out since I'd gotten there so I could have another one if I had to Super Jump and she died, and proceeded to get a vial of mercury and 20 exp (the more useful of the 2, since I'm barely into level and could possibly lose it). I went ahead and told the exact ToD (with my time zone) in /say mode just to help the others.

Throughly thrilled to have seen Argus, even more so to have claimed and killed him with competition (2, 1 full AFK, other I guess was when it poped because I could barely see it and I saw him warp out after I killed it). But I am flat pissed to not get the drop knowing that the next pop will be sometime tomorrow (6:30AM kill, so between midnight and midnight on the 18-36hr scale).

On to the post title, if the whole idea of making it rare/ex was to reduce the number of campers, why would they not also make it 100%? I know most things aren't 100%, but low drop rate an long respawn was why the price was so high to begin with I think. I'm not that good when it come to NM camping competition-wise, so I may well not get it again for a long time.

Suggestions: (just because everyone probably has some) as is, make the drop 100%; if the idea is for everyone to be able to get one, make it like a 1hr forced spawn with the spawn point in the room and the drop rate unchanged or upped, heck make the item to spawn it only sold by the regional vendor for Kolshushu just not something that has to be farmed or that will get ridiculously expensive; or if it's supposed to be ridicuously hard to get, make it like a 4hr or 6hr forced spawn using like a maze chest key (just an example, something rare/ex) and put the spawn point behind the iron door (have to farm up both keys you see), and of course make the drop rate high (75-100%); if Argus is supposed to **** people off, give him some of his own placeholders, make him like a 1-2hr spawn, give him like a 10% drop rate for something thats used to spawn him again for like a 60% drop rate on the amulet if you can handle respawning him within say 1 minute, that makes it high levels and/or pt oriented (which is what they want us to do).

100% drop rate would mean that the gil sellers will be right there charging ppl to get the item still if no takes they would kill it and let drop go so 100% bad but like 25% would be alot more reasonable then the current drop rate
im super dumb

Question
# Aug 18 2005 at 2:41 AM Rating: Default
I'm a 75rng whos leveling sam as my new sub after the nerf, and I have a couple of quick questions for everyone. At level 58 I started using a gun, and have spent virtually millions of gil getting to level 75 because I didnt get the break that alot of newer people got on experience. I had to do it the hard way. So after spending days farming so I could get another level, only to do this repeatedly, I wanna know how this rare/ex drop can be considered a bad thing? When it comes time to go get my peacocks charm i dont have to farm for 4328753240987652348905 years to afford it, without the gilsellers and voke bots there I can just go camp it now, with a good chance of getting it. So hows that bad? Is it bad because now the gil sellers have to move onto something else? Who knows maybe SE will get smart and make all equip drops off nms rare/ex and throw the regular drops in bcnms, would put the gil sellers out of business, and prices would fall back to where they belong. I cant imagine gil-sellers spending hours at a time camping logs or harvesting, theres just too many trees, and harvesting points for that. SO what could possibly be wrong with it?

Yeah, hi.

Maybe all the time you were sitting there, patting yourself on the back and staring blankly at the screen so you can get a drop, you forgot to develop social skills, or intelligence, or puberty. Does your mom know you were staying up late to camp Argus? Careful with the bragging.

Nice image sig, by the way. Oh yeah.

You guys complaining about the gil and the bots and your suggestions like 'SE should decide a price on everything" and others saying "I saved myself 100k and if the price was 25 why would i bother and it would make the game dull".

SE is responding to a problem with their economy, its why they changed it. There is a problem and they are trying to correct it. The drops where changed to RA/EX for several reasons some of which seem to elude most of you. And to the man who said the problem is with the players. Amen. We as a collective feed the problem. The more we price gouge on items then more we as a collective need more gil and which pushes several to buy blocks of gil in the millions. As the demand for gil in game rises so will the demand for gil sellers to aquire gil to sell. It is simple cause and effect in the supply and demand. You guys should be congratulating SE for their efforts in shutting down the gil sellers. just because it negativly affects you doesn't mean it does so for the game. If you are part of the problem then of course it affects you.

I agree with a lot of what you said and I am completely sold and love the idea of the rar/exe drops, the only thing I would like to point out is that it seems you are blaming the entire FFxi community for gilsellers... The ones to blame for gilsellers are gilbuyers, and the only ones to blame for gilbuyers are themselves. You cant say that the ****** economy forces people to buy gil because plenty of people are willing to tough it out and earn their gil (or are too poor irl to afford it >< haha).
Now I'll try to post something actually pertinant to the thread...
What chance do people think a 45thf/bst (bst because its the greatest sub ever for NM hunting! WS and charm boy-eee!) would have against this little fella? I'm hoping between spamming bloody bolts and sleep bolts for SA I could get by, but since I've never fought him before I'd love some input... would hate to camp him for 6 hours only to get my tail kicked.

Tommy you sound like you just came out of the dunes. Do you have any clue how bots are programed?
First: They spam Provoke "NMs name" FOREVER
Second: They "Can" move.
Third: After they are done with there kill, they go "Directly" to the spot they are programmed too.

So going after Argus AGAINST 6+ bots before the update isn't practical. And yes, now I can camp Argue for myself. And just to prove Im not lazy when it comes to camping NMs.

Torrent (4/40) - 2-3 Bots there now.
Punisher (0/2) Its me against 6 Gilsellers
Gallant (0/2) same as above
Spiny (4/18) Made a decent amount
VE (1/2)
Leaping L (1/3)
Bomb King (1/10)
Chyme (0/49){before update} I hate this thing.
And many more.
Now Do I sound lazy?

If SE really wants to strike a blow to gil sellers all they have to do is to set a max price limit on the AH, Trades, bazaars, and delivery service.

If the max price limit on AH's,trades,and bazaars is say;

250 gil (not 250K) for a single stackable item
3k for a stack of 12 stackable to 12 items
24750 gil for a stack of 99 items stackable to 99
25k for non stackable items with the exception
of crystal clusters
3k for crystal clusters

They will have to redesign trades to recognize the difference between non stackable (non cluster) items, clusters, and stackable items. Then add up the seperate max values of each slot used to get a total max gil for that trade.

Example: first slot; gold ore 25k + second slot; 50 Shihei's (50 * 250) 12500 + third slot; 12 fire crystals (12 * 250) 3k. The max gil limit for that trade will be 40500 gil.

For the intent of paying for a PL,warp, teleport or the like. If no item is placed in either players slots the max gil for the trade could be 10K.

For delivery, Set a max total gil limit at 10k
from one person to another, and make it so the sender cant send more gil to the same person til they clear the gil the sender sent from the delivery box.

Example: sender sent 5k to BobbyD, they again send 5k to BobbyD totaling 10K. The sender tries to send 10k gil a third time to BobbyD before BobbyD clears the first 10k from delivery, and recieves a message like; delivery canceled max total gil to BobbyD has already been reached try again later.

This is just a template for the solution. Its up to SE to decide how best to proceed. The main point is that SE should start setting some limits instead of making everything R/E.

This will make it much harder for gil sellers to make enough money in a short amount of time to be worth while.

Note: I said harder not imposible.

Just limiting the max amout of gil you can send through the delivery service alone would be a major help. The delivery service is the main tool gil sellers use to sell their gil. Buy sending it to people online on each server who work for or own the gil selling companies.

Ok the idea in genral is a ok Idea. Yes place a price cap on the AH. Make it so that bazzars can not be priced more then the limite SE places on the ah. But preventing people from sending large amounts of gil or setting it so that each type of item has its own set prices. That will be a little difficult and tring to impliment everything you said would be extremly hard if not almost imposable for SE to impliment. Now I am not saying set the prices for everything too low maybe a price cap of in the hundreds of k no more then like maybe a price of say 500k it is a resanable amount it does not make everything extremly cheap but it prevents stuff being sold for the outrrages price of say 15 mil for a shinny cloth *last I looked on pan server* or how about 20 mil for a scrop harnesss +1 I am sorry I do not see me ever running around in that one. Yes a price cap would be a really nice thing but lets not go over board with it. Oh and just so everyone knows just because people do not like fighting the gill sellers and bots for an item does not make them lazy nor is the fact that people now are more willing to go camp a NM due to a rare/ex item make them a noob or anything else like you all are wanting top call people. I my self get tired of loseing an nm that takes 24+ hours to pop after camping for 3 to 4 hours to someone that just wants the item for gil not to use

I have to say this idea is really bad. If all the items cost a limited price then whats the use of having quests for items? whats the use of farming items? The game would become very dull very quickly. I know i enjoy my white mage a lot more because i camped spiny spipi for the the silk mist cape and saved myself 100k now if it was limited to 25k why would i bother waisting the time. The idea of price control in any form is bad

I think SE should decide a price on every item in the game and let us only put the item up for like 10% higher of lower than that price. stoping people from sending gil to their mules through delivery is just stupid, same as forceing people to pay for everything. would this mean i couldn't just give my friend a haubergeon out of kindness? or lending alot of gil to friend? this doesn't really make sense. but anyway, there truely should be caps on everything on the AH, it would make the game more enjoyable if nothing was (or could be) overpriced.

I'm sorry but I can't think of anything good to say about this post. That is quite possibly the single worst idea I have ever heard. It would turn the entire economy to **** and at least half the people who play this game, including myself, would quit. The only peoples econoy that would get ruined is the gil sellers economy setting limits on asking prices wil only keep the prices from escalating out of control.

if the prices drop it would not cost as much to buy the items you want.

Okay,
If we were to apply your idea to real life. This means that we cannot buy anything for a more than 25 thousand dollars. This makes the economy f-ed up. They're trying to make this somewhat realistic, and if they "deflated" the economy to a max of 25k. NOTHING WILL CHANGE. Slowly, everything will get to be less money. Copper ore 1 gil. Kraken Club 25k. It will fix itself back to normal. Gilsellers will still exist- IGN.com will sell 25k for 250 dollars.

It would still work out cause the highest cost for any one it would be 25k.

Even the NPC's items price would drop. If nothing costs over 25k then why would you need like 99999999 gil.

Besides there are still a good number of quests that get you a lot of gil. Also keep in mind that what I posted is just a template for the solution. Its up to SE to decide how best to proceed.

That has to be the worst idea ever. Another stupid idea I read recently was to make everything NPC "like all other FF games." Which completely eliminates the purpose of MMO. I'd be seriously pissed, and I think a lot of other people would be too if they put some sort of max limit on anything within the game. The idea behind a MMORPG is to create a virtual world that players co-exist in that is loosely based on real world ideals, one of those being an economy, in the case of FFXI its a capitalist economic system. In your example its a highly controlled communistic or facist system.

Lets get rid of gil completely and just share everything! When you want something you can just go to any NPC in the game and scroll through a list and pick out the items that you want and when you're done you put them back. That sounds like fun doesn't it, you ******* commie!

That wouldnt be much fun, its more fun to farm stuff for your self. But greedy people ruin it for every one else. My system may not be perfect but it will work. Besides even in a capitalistic government there are limits. Such as equal opportunity laws and Monopoly laws. They also set pricing standards, with allowances for research and developement.

Well personally for me I'm glad that SE is making some usefull "REALLY" usefull items, rare/ex. I read ppl saying that there money is worthless now, hmmmm.... lets see here. Umm its a GAME people, and the sole purpose of gill is to be able to buy the things u need. It's a means to get the equipment u need and to get items u then use. Why be mad at SE for making the object more atainable. I mean lets face it, this DOES helps u get a chance since u can get an item with the exact same stats that cannot be sold. I'd rather have the neccesary gear than the money, cause in the end money is worth **** if u can't get what u need. The only ppl that truly suffer from this special items are gillsellers. And this is cause they make a living of fantasy money. Yes I hate gillsellers and that's cause i work and study hard, only to want to have fun with this game, but if I need a great gear: "BAM" millions of gill. I bow down to NO one less gillseller, so there's a bonus from SE. And if Gillsellers are not happy then they can "Megabyte" me lol. Rate me down or do as u please cause i frankly give a tiny rats ***, but if this game has a chance to escape this freaking capitalism, rare/ex items are the way to go. And if u think ill pay to let a gillseller get the item and let me lot for it FORGET IT, only thing ill pay will be like 1 gill for him/her to get the hell out my way, but this is a major setback for them. And you know they can always go back to there real jobs like normal people do. Sry for the long message, but I felt I had to get my rage for gillsellers of my chest and now that I know this it gives me hope that this game can finally have a chance. Thank you and have fun in game ^^ :)

SE just doesn't understand. They move the regular drops to BCNMs and make the NM drop a rare/ex now. They say this is to reduce the # of gil sellers and NM campers so that only ppl who want the items will camp the NMs. All this has done is increase the # of ppl in the areas. The gil sellers r still there only now they are selling the "generous gift" of allowing ppl to lot on the drops they get.

The only way SE will get rid of gil sellers and allow ppl to actually play the game is to make the really good items rare/ex & quest obtained. That way only the ppl who activate the quest can get it and rare/ex makes it nonsellable. Since you can usually find enough ppl to help on quests for free or for a reasonable fee, Gil sellers will not be profitable.

Gil sellers are only profitable because we make them so. Take away the profit by not allowing them to sell items for millions and millions of gil and they will no longer have a reason to ruin a very great game.

So you're saying the gilsellers camp the NM, and get drop... and /sh "Who'll pay the most!" and in the 5 minute time period before the drop gets distributed to whomever, they arrange and verify a payment via paypal or whatever medium? Perhaps they take your WORD that you'll pay that much. Or do you pay beforehand, and STILL have to sit in the zone, ready, until they get the drop for you? There's a reason gilsellers have left these NMs alone since the update.

Because I always see a lot of people in the room where the scorpion spawns. Or do I just have really bad luck? :(

The room on the map as well as the chamber located at k-8. The spawn time is anywhere from 18-36 hours or so the posts here say, with argus spawn alternating the leech king spawn. To get a rough Time of Death leave you character logged into game in any area near to the spawn point and turn on as many filters as possible except for those that show (other PC kills) every fenrir day roughly an hour the game will post the conquest update. Review the log backward until you see Argus/leechking was defeated by XXXXX subtracting an hour for each update. This does have downside to it though. You run the risk of being MPKed so be sure to check on your character often, and do not put your character into rest mode so you dont pull aggro to healing. If you want to safely wait for the pop farm up a key and hide in the small iron door, this should allow you to review loggs and stay safe from AEO and aggressive mobs.
The spawn area used to be just the small room but it was made larger do to the gilsellers/bots. However the only time I have even seen argus was in the small chamber listed above. Good luck with the camping.

Cantino I call BS on this, if they are truley doing this it would only take 1 GM call with a chat log and they would go Bye bye.

from what i've heard and read. Argus will still be there same spawn time same place same everything. except the drop. R/ex drop Peacock Amulet. if you want the charm it's a BCNM fight now. no quest to turn amulet into charm. just a BCNM. so after a while ppl will stop camping Argus and it might be fairly easy to get an amulet. that's my hopes and dreams anyways lol.

Is NOT a 2-6 hour pop like ffxisomepage says. Looks like the spawn times haven't changed at all after patch.

#REDACTED, Posted: Jul 25 2005 at 6:21 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) After maintenance i was not able to log in that night and i waited untill the next day when i finally could. When i logged in i went strait for Argus and somehow he was just sitting there unclaimed so i claimed killed and got a "Peacock Amulet" I know i am the first on my server to get one knowing the maintenance had just occured. At first i was happy and then i realized how mad i was because i want a Peacock Charm not some fake Amulet. Sure it gives you the same effect but i have always wanted a Charm and now SE changed the drops now making the Peacock Charm probably even more harder to obtain. Thanks SE....

Yea um... FYI you can get the charm through BCNM40 so it is actually easier to get and cheaper to get. Hope this helps ^^

I'm sorry but I can't help but think that people like you are incredibly stupid. IT HAS THE SAME STATS AS THE ORIGINAL and means you can actually have a chance of getting one because there is no gil seller competition.

#REDACTED, Posted: Aug 03 2005 at 10:00 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Call me stupid or w/e you want but i want Peacock Charm the original. Amulet doesn't sound right. Recently i got a Charm in BCNM40 so i am happy now, i tossed that stupid amulet as soon as i did.

Calling you stupid is right.
Any idiot can buy gil and buy the charm - hell its only like 5 million right now. Haveing the rare/ex verion is like a badge showing that you camped it claimed it and got the drop yourself. I would rather ave the rare/ex version than the normal version.

Why wouldn't you sell the regular one and keep the rare/ex one if you were going to keep one and toss one? I'm gonna just assume you are lying about both drops, because no one who plays this game legitamatly would do that.

No i am not lying about the drops i killed argus got the amulet and tossed it cuz it's fake, then got charm from BCNM. Charm is the real deal AUTHENTIC. *brushes shouldas off* You can ask my LS if i got the drop if you don't believe me anyways. CHARM not AMULET. Call me stupid if you want i don't care i play this game for show and the amulet is a fake. The name is Dracun on the Ragnarok server kthxbai.

You TOSSED the amulet? Why in god's name would you do that!? You could take the charm, sell it, and have the same thing still! Oy... You make no sense to me... but whatever, your loss.

I wouldn't at all be surprised, anyone ******** about an item with the same stats clearly only wants to sell it later.

That means one thing: you don't want to use it you want to sell it lol...
RE: Peacock Amulet
# Jul 25 2005 at 10:54 PM Rating: Default
I don't want to sell it. Just the fact is that i had it stuck in my head i wanted a Peacock Charm not an Amulet.. just the way i am i guess. Also charm being rare not rare/ex is a lot better i could use it on another character if i wanted to.

possible gil seller angry about the update?
RE: Peacock Amulet
# Jul 26 2005 at 6:08 AM Rating: Decent
If anything you should prefer a Amulet, it shows people you actually worked to get it. If you had the Charm, people could easily accuse you of buying it - which I'm sure you don't want.
