Got pretty lucky, fought Spiny earlier in the hour, got the drop, went back for kicks a little later, maybe like 20 mins later, and bam Spiny was there again! weirdest thing ever.

She is single handedly funding my Rng/Nin character.
Ok so one day I am in need of gil, so I decide to lvl a theif up to lvl 15, took 2 days, but I am now 150 thousand gil richer. I looked up NM's to hunt here and I see Spiny. So decide to try him out. Head to out to East Sarat....whatever and start farming crawlers. At 11k a stack of silk, how could you go wrong? So I meet a Spiny camper one night, he shows me like four different spawn spots. So I started camping her, and so far i have killed her 8 times and have gotten the cape a nice 4 times, 50% drop is good for me. I hunt with one more person, and if she is out when I am out we switch on and off killing Spiny. I probably could have had 8 capes by now, but it's only fair we take turns. There is hardly ever any competition, and I find that the most common spawn spot is all the way at the end of the river. Widescan is a must for this guy, also asking people in the area when the last kill was and communication is a must.

Just a couple confirmations on Spipi locations as well as my first encounter with the NM. :P
I finally saw Spipi for the first time last night as I was leveling my Bard. Of course, it was already claimed and had a few peeps standing around it, but it was fun to finally see this NM for the first time. ^^ I asked if the cape dropped but got no answer. Anyways, Spipi seemingly spawned in the mid-east portion of I-7 close to J-7.
As luck would have it, I was leveling my Bard yet again around the next day in this area and I happened upon Spipi once again! This time no one was even close so I thought I'd give it a try. My Bard was only level 8 at the time so I did not have much of a chance. I did a bit of damage but not near as much as Spipi was doing to me. A higher level mage stood around waiting for me to die so I just told him to take Spipi and disengaged. Worst part is he already had the Cape so he ended up losing it (or that's at least what he told me). -_-;; Anyhow, this second sighting was in the north part of I-7 near the water and random assortment of rocks.

Heh. The next time that happens, just do a quick "/help". Call for help, nobody gets the drops. I can't stand jerks who don't heal you when you're fighting NMs. I figure if they won't help me, there's no reason that *I* should help them. I always heal people fighting notorious monsters.

Iv camped this ???? nm 7 times and killed him 7 times no drop not even silk. But my bro he got a drop 1st time he kill spini.. he even got 3 silks at that to. I was the same lv. as him when he fought and kill spini..

I Killed the Spini Spipi 5 times so far , 3 times with my WHM only being level 15 . If you use Banish as often as possible and your weapon skill , he should be easily killed . Out of the 5 times I killed it it spawned at J-7 but it also spawns at K-8 near the river and I have never gotten a drop at that spawn point .
yes, you could physically kill it.
Okay, so I was just heading to Qufim one day for leveling, and this guy on my linkshell just announced to us that he got the Mist Silk Cape from Spiny Spipi. He was passing through the area on his way doing something that I don't remember, when he suddenly saw Spipi spawn. He went, killed it, and got the drop. He was not camping it or anything, and it was his first time killing it. Needless to say, he was very excited. ^^;; I am going to kill that stupid crawler and get that cape for myself!
Ok, so me and a couple other people were there camping Spiny. I wasn't keeping track of time but it felt like 40 minutes-hour, kept widescanning with my newly aquired RNG as my sub, seen nothing. Then I run up around on that long path kinda above that Tower... There was an Elvaan there and we knew we were both camping it. Well I stop for a second and look at him, was gonna say something but then I kept going as I noticed a small bunch of people standing there, and I find this japanese player killing Spiny.

This is what i have learned about this NM:

But it felt good to beat a NM, even though it already was almost dead. And 12 experience points too!

I've seen him spawn, yes spawn, in broad daylight... killed... no drop... oh well!
I have seen him in broad daylight, but it is possible that he just wasn't killed for about 5 hours (game time). The only time I have seen him spawn was, yes, midnight.

The first (...and only) time I met Spiney, I mistook him for a typical Crawler. I was at around 10th/11th thief, just doing some farming. I fire an arrow off, and run up and start hacking away. Two swings of my sword in I noticed it didn't say "Crawler" above him, and I realized this has to be one of them fancy NMs I've been reading about. Check my inventory.. no arrows left, no mirtrakabobs. Hey! I have my 2 hour left!
.... missed it by 25 hps.
needless to say, I always check for a name now.

I killed him 3 times today no drop yet. But as a lvl 21blm/10whm this critter has yet to hit me once. I usually run around all the spawn points I know farming bees and crawlers and saving manafont for when he spawns (this way I don't have to worry about watching my MP while farming). So far he's spawned twice in the same spot and once by river.
Hey I have had a lot of luck with this NM. I farm like others for the chips, honey, and silk, but I always keep an eye out for him. I usually find him in the most Southeastern corner of I-6 where the four squares meet. Right in between that set of rocks and the river. And almost always at night. Now that I have RNG i never walk through East Sara without widescaning the area. Good luck to all campers. Profit makers and people who just need the gear.
Oh also to people farming here. Try killing some crabs. One of there drops is Remi shells which on my server sells for 5k a stack.

So here's my fun times with Spiny. It all started like a week or two ago when my friend was looking up armor for his WHM and wanted to buy a Mist Silk Cape only discover a 28K gil price tag. You can imagine how devastating that was. So he looked up why it was so expensive (i mean it's cool but definately not that cool). So he tells me taht it drops from a low lvl NM right in our own backyard. So the next night he asks me if i want to go camp him out and we run out there and as soon as we arrive (i mean like the moment we get there) he pops right in front of us, and then is prompted snagged from right under our noses by a pair of high level farmers. That's how it all began.
I think i'm actaully pretty lucky, i ended up camping him about a dozen times in a week. Saw him 3 more times, killed him three times. Got thread the first two times. the third time i saw the thread scroll up and was so sad i almost didn't see hte cape scroll up immediately after.
so here's some tips from my experience (take it with a grain of salt or whatever). Saw him actaully pop 3 times, in only two different spawn points, and the fourth time he must have poped from one of those same two spots. Basically right in the middle of J-7 out in front of teh ruins, just past where the road bends. He always spawned at night, near midnight, i've always found him between 22:00 and 2:00.
I got him two spawns in a row, so i'm pretty sure he spawns once every night, but i cna't be sure. b/c there was one time i camped him 3 vanadiel nights straight and never saw him. but i wasn't really cruising around that whole area marked as his spawn area, so i don't know for sure. Plus every once peopele would just pass thorugh and someone could have picked him off by chance. No, I tried at about that level and died. Get to Fire before you make an attempt as BLM. (You can try before that, but your chances of success are low)

Well I'd tried camping this NM, but it never showed up any times I've camped for it. I've killed it 3 times, and every time it was random luck that I found it.
First time I found it, I was running a friend from Bastok to Windy so he could change allegience... didn't even know it was a NM until I tried to con it, and couldn't gauge it. Killed it, only got a sil thread.
The second time, I was coming back from Valkrum, decided to hit the area and there it was. Killed it... Only got silk thread.
The last time, which was about 5 minutes ago, I was coming back from doing Windy mission 2-1, and I wasn't even looking for it, and was on a Chocobo. I saw two crawlers, thought that was odd, so I checked them both, and there it was. Fumbled through the menus to try to dismount, because I thought for SURE someone had seen it, too, but I dismounted and casted Dia at it, and got it. I was upset I wasn't on my 18THF/9WHM while I was killing it, because I thought it would only drop the thread again, but when I killed it, it dropped the thread and the cape. Set it up for auction... lets see how my luck turns out.

Thanks allakhazam.com and all the great post here. You are right on for this NM. Since reading the information on this site two weeks ago (5/13) I have killed Spiny Spippi 7 times in about 12hrs game play. This may sound like extreme hunting time, but I farm all the Bees for Chips and honey, and all the crawlers for Silk (sometime throwing out crawler calculas that are not stackable) in order to continue farming. This has net me about 60K and in no way a waste of my time. It is miniscule but I end up chaining the Bees, crawlers and Goblins for about 15xp each which adds up after 12 hours and went up from 14th to almost 16th lvl. I got the cape once on my second kill but it auto-lotted to a lower level war that had joined me. (dang it) Other than that I own this Crawler on the phoenix server. I hunt by my self at 15 lvl RDM now. She is not to tough but I try to have +200 tp at all times and at least half Magic. Then I beat her to death the way a Warrior-Mage should with a sword saving my MP for cure if necessary. She almost got me my first time solo at 14rdm due to posion. She has spawned 5 of 7 of the times that I killed her and twice more when I was too late to pull her myself at the location on the Map over by the river (J-7), mostly up by the far dead end, other side of the mountains from the road to ruins. Yes I call her a she. "She" is the mother of the other crawlers in the area and when you kill to many of them she comes for revenge which is about once every 30 min to 2 hrs (which is the longest time I can stand runnning in circles killing stuff with out a break and a trip to the AH.)

Well im a lvl 50Thief and Actually never fought this b4 which is prolly rare and all esp since im a thf and this is what i could be doing especially if i changed to Ranger sub or sumthin.... Ive done the VE b4 thou (Valkrum Emperor) for the Valkrum Haipin and got it ^^. this is without a doubt cake compared to that no doubt about it.. I bet i could own this but thats just me :p Lucky hunting your first NM new folks Ill be there to do it only if i needed this for if i wanted it for my mage or sumthin.. otherwise for me ive many better ways to make Gil ^^

I was on my way from jeuno after just checking the price on riceballs, I was naked, and using widescan. I saw it, got off, and punched it to death.
It dropped the silk cape and some silk thread.
The (not so) subtle inneundo was intentional too. :P

Well, I've fought Spipi 5 times now with no drop. Is the drop rate worse than other NM's, or am I just having bad luck? If this is what t expect for most NM's, I'm not gonna bother even camping them.

Fought him five times, gotten drop once, off of lvl 16 thf at the time... lookin for money right now lol i keep campin him with friends... ranger is EXPENSIVE and i just started lol... blew through about 30k in 14 levels... COME ON MIST SILK WOOT :P

I just owned Spiny on my travels from Sandy to Windy 5 minutes of camping and I got the drop!

One problem i see about camping him is the lack of communication. He can spawn on the other side of the mountains. Someone will kill him and you will never notice that he was there. Honestly this is my strat. I used it today and got him 4/5 times.
Just keep circling in a parabola from the tower to the little bend in the river, (farthest western part of spawn) and then follow the river to the end. It might also nice to put markers on all the crawler spawns you see. Then basically if you kill him or someone else kill him log off and come back in 40 min. He will spawn within 10 min. The first time i camped him it took me 2 hours. The other 4 times i saw him within 15 min of logging back on. Unfortunetly no drops for me ='( but IT WILL BE MINE Muuhuhuh

This is why "Wide Scan" isd great i stand at the tip of the mountain and repetively do it :)
