Stray Mary is a lottery pop of Mad Sheep, as has been copiously covered in previous posts. What this means is that every time the game decides to spawn a Mad Sheep in the windmill area of Konschtat Highlands, there is a certain percentage chance that it will spawn Stray Mary instead of that sheep. So, there is no set respawn time and no set way to find her. Just run around killing sheep over and over and, if you have Wide Scan, use it occasionally to see if she appears.

As with other NM's, Mary grants a title for killing her. The title is "Mary's Guide."

No problem at lvl23.
I had been searching for Stray Mary (Highlands) since my late lvl19... the fool that i was. Head out there today with the intention of crafting Sheepskins (then wool if skins dropped like crazy), killling away sheep, all the while having a conversation with the ex, not paying too much attention, farming away.
Wouldn't you guess it. All of a sudden, i'm going wtf? Why is this one so hard to kill (3 ranged attacks, not having actually hit the Attack button yet). Of course i see the name STRAY MARY . Too funny, scramble to hit attack, power slash, and get my real game on. put him down with about half hp left.
All this to say not a good idea to solo before lvl22. Can prolly get away with her at lvl21.
Drops (war23/thf11):
1 giant sheep meat
1 sheepskin
1 earth crystal
1 jug of Mary's Milk
1 jug of Selbina Milk (Add to dropped items list in mob description please)

My friend and I were teamed up and fighting mobs, both using level 10 jobs - me NIN, him RNG. So we get to (F-10) and guess who we see?

Stray Mary.

The ironic thing was I was looking for her with RDM earlier.

Anyway, I want the Milk and Horn so I use Mijin Gakure, switch to RDM 35, grab a chocobo and MOVE LIKE CRAZY to Konschtat.

Once I got there, the sheep was back in (F-7) where it spawned. I beat the hell out of it while my friend watched...and we got the Milk...but no Horn. I tried pawning it, no luck...it's still in my Mog House...and I'm getting thirsty!

The milk is used in a quest in S.San. If you head towards the Residential area, you'll find some alleys. There is a person inside one of the houses that needs the milk to put her to sleep.

So here's how I came upon Stray Mary. I was power-leveling some guy out of the goodness of my heart (okay, he paid me, but I didn't ask for it) in Highlands when I came upon Miss Mary. I remembered the name and knew it was a notorious monster.

I was only level 16 (still am...) and was in no position to go after a level 19-20 NM with a level 7 in tow. He said I had no chance and would surely get killed, but I knew that some people spent a lot of time looking for Mary, and I was definitely not going to give her up. We stayed by Mary as she roamed the grasses of Highlands, arguing about what to do, when I spotted a level 50 fella.

I told him I'd been searching for Stray Mary for HOURS (a lie, but I figured I'd have to pull on the guy's heartstrings if I wanted to make it out with whatever special item Mary had) and asked if he'd help me kill it. He was a nice guy and agreed. The level 7 thought this was a bad idea still and courageously ran away (he didn't know that ALL NM's register "impossible to gauge!")

The level 50 made quick work of Mary, and I came out with Mary's Milk. I'm currently selling it for 6,000, but if I can't pawn it off, I guess I'll do the dang quest for 5,000. :)

Did she also drop Mary's Horn? coz that cost me than the milk, you know.
More Mary Info

Ok, guess I'll throw my experience with this NM on here.

I spent about 12-14 hours total hunting Mary. The horrible thing about her is that she can litterally spawn anywhere from the very top of F/G-6 to the very bottom of F/G-9. Not just 8, 9. I'm sorry to tell you guys this because that means it's about 8 squares total you have to cover.

I got it with my 36whm/1rng at G-9 finally. During this time I found that bst widescan can never compare with rng widescan. So get rng (takes 20-30 mins to get) and sub it.

The only other advice I can give is that this is one of the WORST NMs to camp for gil, but if you need the item, I would suggest getting a friend with widescan and having one of you camp and kill sheep at the line of F-8/9 and the other do the same at the line of F-6/7. Good luck!

(Now I get to camp the signa. Ah, the joy of being a bard.)
Mistake... or was it.

This was the wierdest NM that i've killed. I was just walking across the Konschtat Highlands minding my business (My chocobo had ditched me so thats why i was on foot) After a while i start to lag so i stop and then when the connection came to normal I couldn't move. This is usually a trick i use. If u can't move (because of lag only or something similiar) then target an npc or a monster and /follow it. then i do this about 3 times. on the 3rd time i was about to switch monsters. The next thing i knew I was running straight toward Stray Mary lol. Had to kill it quick though cause i saw this lv 30 warrior running my direction. Pwned it, got the milk, and now I'm 8k richer. ^^ So goes to show ya accidents do happen... but some can turn out in your favor ;)

Can't find her T_T
# May 12 2004 at 3:40 PM Rating: Decent
Does anyone have any surefire ways of finding mary? I've camped her for about 3 IRL days on and off for maybe a total of 8 hours. I haven't spotted her, I'm thinking of having my friend come in on chocobo and circle the area while I kill the Mad sheep for her to spawn more often, but as of now nothing seems to be working :/

So me and my friend are hanging out in the highlands hunting tremor rams and having some pretty good luck. I'm playing as my RNG 30/ THF 15 so I'm using widescan. And what do you know? I see Ms. Mary on my widescan. I put it on autorun towards her while I log on to this site to see if I can take her. So I engage and she gets owned by me and my arrows. She drops the milk and the horn. Funny thing is neither me nor my friend knew how much the horn was worth so he goes, "I need the milk for the quest you can have the horn." I get back to Sandy and check it up in the AH. 140k!!!! I started freaking out. Of course I split the oney with my good friend. Saw that ***** Mary tongiht too. Didn't get to her in time but the guy that did didn't get the drop so I didn't feel so bad.

Hahaha this just happened! its like 5:17 in the morning here and my and my roommate were leveling our beastmasters in Highlands (we are both lvl 12). All of a sudden i see stray mary. So without even thinking twice about it i charmed an easy prey Giant Bee and sicked it on her, then ran away. My roommate and I got in a party together, he had a tough he was going to sick on her. When i got to him...Mary was no longer red, and two 16 wars were attacking her!

Luckily they both died! MUAHAHA! Here we are with Mary like barely alive...and I lost connection! My friend put his tough sheep on mary, but she went through it like nothing. My friend was put to sleep, and then mary killed him, roughly the time i logged back on. Then mary killed me. Needless to say we were both crying.

So we started from North Gustaberg again, hoping and praying to find Mary and no one had killed her yet. After about 5-10 minutes of walking from the bottom of the map to where Mary spawns...we see her. And she's at full health. I had an even match sheep, my friend had a tough sheep. We attacked her. She killed them with the quickness. So we just kept finding sheep after sheep after sheep. We must have went through 20 sheep of ranges decent challange to tough. And then....she died. And Mary's Horn...was ours!! Two lvl 12 bst killed stray mary. Thank you.

Question: is it necessary to have a min lv 15 Thief subbed so you're using Treasure Hunter ability with this type of a mob (i.e. a notorious monster) to get anything other than the regular drops?
For instance, are the additional drops, like Milk or the Horn in this case, not technically a "rare" drop but rare enough that it's a waste of time without a thief??

you can still get rare drops.

TH1 increases the chance to get regular item drops.

TH2 increases the chance for rare drops and greatly increases the chance for regular drops.

note that "greatly" is subjective. :D

Note that if the item you want doesn't have 'rare' on it then your chance to get it _IS_ increased by TH1.

A friend and I were farming rams like usual, me being whm45/thf15 and him rdm45/rng22. After a ram and Rampaging Ram, as we were wondering around, he picked up Stray Mary on wide scan around F/G-6, the furthest she could be from us but still be detected by scan. "What the hell, why not", we thought and raced towards her. Never seeing her before in all the times we've farmed Konschtat, we were just anxious to catch a glimpse. I was crossing my fingers that she wouldn't be dead by the time we got here. Lo and behold, she wasn't even taken! He Dia'd and I Flash'd as quickly as possible (there were quite a few anon people and a ranger, even though none were in sight) and then I proceeded to beat it with my hammer. (No animals were harmed in the making of this game.) Adrenaline was pumping.. my first time seeing her and I get to kill her!! One more hit and she's dead-

Oh my god... Mary's Horn. We couldn't believe our luck. (Oh yeah, and Mary's Milk.) We literally just sat there for about 5 minutes talking in our linkshell about how awesome it was and contemplating what to do with it. It's sitting in my bazaar right now for 99,999,999 gil, but it's going for about 145k in Jeuno AH on Siren at the moment. ^^

I wasn't even camping this MOB and hardly noticed it. I was helping a Lvl 30 SAM/16 WAR find a Rammpaging Ram when I noticed a sheep with a different name from all the others. Me being only a level 13 WAR I disbanded the party with the samurai and let him take it. He did like 50 DMG to the Stray Mary and only took about 4DMG a hit. He got the milk and is selling it for 10K.

Ohhh yeah!!
I was camping her for about 45mins-hour and a half. I'm a 26war/mnk and I was bored of beating one sheep after another so I started training them I provoked one then ran by another then provoked another then kept running for the other end of the area. I saw a Thunder elemental so what the hell I went to town on it while the sheep attacked me. I hit the wrong macro and used raiden thrust on the thunder elemental... anyway I killed the elemental but him and the sheep took me from 445 to 270. I moved to kill that sheep when bam Mary was beating on me too! So after dispatiching a mad seep I went to work on mary and had to use mightystrikes but I prevailed and she gave me Mary's milk and Dundunduh!! MARY's HORN! had to clear out a couple stacks of sheep meat mid fight though!

I love Stray Mary. She's my favorite NM to camp. Of course, I've never actually seen her.... ^_~

I found some amazing farming to be done in Konscthat around level 30. I took my 30 DRG main and a RNG sub and wandered around killing sheep, rams, and Thunder Elementals (great cash from the elementals due to the freuqent thunderstorms in the highlands). Due to unstacking items, it only took me about 20 minutes to fill my inventory, but I could easily make 10k+ from every trip by synthing the Sheepskin into Sheep Leather, selling the Ram Skins to NPCs (Ram Skins are slow and cheap on my server, I only lose about 25 gil on them), and putting the lightning clusters and ram horns up on the AH. I never saw Mary, but as much as I'm out there, I figure it's inevitable. Try it; even if you don't find Mary, you'll make a nice bit of cash anyway.

If you're not a Warp-capable mage, this works best if your home country controls Zulkheim.... that way you can use the Dunes outpost to teleport back and forth.

Once you're level 20, assuming your server's killed all the treants (all the servers have by now, right?) you can teleport to your home country from any outpost that your country controls and that you have done a supply quest to.

Camped there for approximately 8 hours and Stray Mary spawned three times, of which I got all. Got a milk the first time, a milk the second, and a milk and the horn the third. Probably around 25-40% chance of the horn. Each time it spawned about the center of the area marked as its spawn point on the map here. I had ranger sub, this would have been hell without it. It was also about the most boring thing I've ever done...run north scan three times along the way kill sheep...run south scan three times along the way kill sheep...fun.

Camped for Mary for at least 4 hours tonight. I ended up killing enough regular sheep to get the following in drops (no Treasure Hunter ability):

Sheep Tooth x 14
Sheepskin x 24
Giant Sheep Meat x 31

...without even SEEING Mary once! From the constant increase in the number of people well over level 20 who were there, it didn't look like anyone else was having much luck either.

Maybe I was just having a bad day, but if this is any indicator, the chance of a sheep spawning as Mary seems to be a small fraction of a percent.
