There IS a way to find these other than running around aimlessly. Wherever there is one hiding underground, you can see its shadow. Look closely at the cracks in the ground and if you see a shadow, that's where the mob is hiding. If you are unsure, wait for a moment and watch to see if the shadow moves.
I personally haven't noticed the mob move to another area, but I HAVE seen it rotate. They spawn under cracks right around the area where you pop the NM, and once you kill one, it can respawn in another spot, so don't just go back to the same crack over and over. These were always DC to me at 75. If you're kiting one of these, be careful that you don't run over another one's shadow or you will be in big trouble.

This mob also drops the HQ antlion jaw for making the traps for rostram pumps. i killed 3 and got 2 HQ jaws. They spawn on the western part of the map under the ground, so you wont see them. You have to be walking around with no sneak on the cracks in the ground until you get ambuhed by one. Not the most pleasant way to pull mobs. And before you hit reply, it was definately a trench antlion, and it was definately a HQ jaw, i know because i accidently found the trench one while looking for the cave antlions. i know it was an HQ jaw because immediately after i got my 2nd one, i had them crafted into a trap. Thank you.

went to take a SAM friend to the gully and well, didnt expect one of these to pop, came out of the ground and scared my SAM friend shi*less, he paniced and ran while i had hate, i ran for the ills, stopped to try and Cure V, got interupped, ran more, tried to cast again interrupt, ran past my WAR, trid casting, again, interuppted, ran more (while war didnt voke) ran more, died dlvled to 74 =/

Just to let ya know, me and some friends were exploreing the area when a 75 PLD ran over where one of these was stayin, well i suggest that you dont fight them, I died in 3 hits (51 SAM) the 64 MNK was D2ed out w. 18 HP the 75 PLD had like 150 and the BLM died too. If it wernt for the whole supprise attack thing That place would have been alot more awesome....

Just like the Pit Antlions, these nasty suckers lay underground til you walk right into their trap. An ambush attack can do 500+ damage to anyone below 65. Be careful and ready with blink or stoneskin to prevent this.
