I camped him last night and I think that one hour timer is a POS. It was a whm and myself a 22nd War and 11 Mnk, and we cleared the room out all damn night, we caught him once and kicked his ***, then three hours later no spawn....I thought "Ok, maybe a fluke, and we will wait a bit longer.." Then four hours rolled around and nothing...so we gave up. He dropped the wand the first time and I plan on going back after leveling my thief to 15th. Maybe I got a bad night, but an hour spawn was crap on Carbuncle.

Were you killing the other orcs in the little side area/room where Ashmaker spawns? If not, he will not spawn. These other orcs work as placeholders. When I am mining in Yughott and no one else is camping him I will come by and kill the orcs and try to catch the spawn. 1/19 on this ******* and I have TH1, got the drop the very first time without THF sub and every time since I have had THF sub and nothing but wands.
Ashmaker does spawn roughly every hour to an hour and a half, real time, if you kill all the other orcs. The other orcs respawn about every three and a half hours, in game time.

I really want the robe to sell. I think the wand is 100% b/c im 0/2 with 2 wands.

i was with a pt today helping a friend who wanted to kill the sandy dragon,
we got to the grotto and the pt
was terrible so I left.I went afk for a minute and when i got back he was fighting me,
i beat him no prob,but no robe (/sigh).
Nice wand though.

I saw this guy randomly walking through there ******* around after logging one time. Me being a 51 RDM didnt really think a thing of it. I killed him got the wand, checked on here and relalize that wasnt the drop, so I come back the next day, and kill him about 10 times in a row with my DRG sub. Well i got 10 wands, no robe. The next day i went to level my THF to 15 for other NM's and decided id go back for one last try, first spawn i get him and get the robe. I dont know if it was just luck, or that TH1 works pretty damn good with this guy, i had a freind that said he was wondering why i thought it was hard to get it, he killed it 5 times got the robe 3 times, of course with TH1.

I don't think the TH1 has much to do with it. I fought him a few times as a RDM with no THF sub. I finally decided to lvl a THF to 15 just so I had something for farming. I camp this guy for 4 straight days fighting him for a total of 13 times as a 32 RDM/15 THF. I got the wand every single time until the last fight I finally got the Robe. I was driving my LS nuts b!+ching about it. All this time I had TH1, and even fought him 3 times in a row. I think TH1 may help drops with lesser creatures (such as sheep, rabbits, mandragoras, etc.) because I get a lot more drops with them. If it's a rare drop, even one like Silk Thread, I don't think it makes a huge difference. Now I can get my SMN and WHM up to good lvls and pimp them out with this.

I've had this drop twice the last 2 times I've fought him. Once after teaming up with a BLM that was camping there, and once alone.

The Good:
- This NM spawns on a nice timetable (once an hour, earth time)
- He always drops a Hermit's Wand which is good for 3k on Sylph
- He's a joke if you cast silence on him, because he's a BLM
- The Orc placeholders drop nice gil, esp. with Gilfinder, not to mention lots of leather and scale armor which is good to sell. Also farming bat wings is a good idea for building San d'Oria fame.
The Bad:
- If you are about his level and you can't silence him, expect to be swallowing a ton of spells when he uses Manafont (BLM Two-hour)
- Miners in Yughott Grotto might give you a hard time if they see you camping, and hang around waiting for him. Kinda unnerving if you've had the place to yourself.
- Forgetting to bring pickaxes to mine when you find Mining Points. >.<

I usually get on FFXI in the early morning. Most of the time I will hunt this NM everymorning in hopes of getting the cape so I can sell it and buy Ninjutsu ^^. I see/fight him almost everyday in the first hour/hour and a half of camping.
I have yet to get the cape though. And it seems that hardly anyone camps him on Odin.

I camped this guy for about a week a couple of months back and he would spawn every about 50 minutes to an hour and ten minutes apart if I kept the room clear of orcs. It's not like you could set your watch by it, but it was reasonably consistent. Last night I camped for over two hours and he didn't pop once.
From May to July, the robe has sold on Valefor for a steady 40k. It's drop rate is pretty lousy. Let's say I've sold a lot of Hermit's Wands.

hey im percival from levithan server,ive been huntin this orc for a while and he musnt like me cuz he never shows.I read this thingy here and it said he spawns every hour but i hunted him for 2 hours and nothin.if you can help me please do. also if there is anyway to make gill easy please tell me cuz to me its real hard.thanx.

^_^ kill the orcs in the area (they are the place holders) not sure on # you have to kill though :) gl with it. crafting is a profitable way to make gil or chopping trees or mining
robe was only 9k on unicorn last i checked

ok this is my story
i was mining and pressig tab frantically so i look at my targeter thought i saw ashmaker so i was like STOP i lost him for 3 min found him agian wasn't claimed so i casted dia got him another orc joined in and both took me down to about half health of course iwas in field gear and i was a whm. well anyway i was suprised to c him drop it on my first try so now if i ever c him i'm gonna kill and hope for another drop like that ^^.

Ive camped this guy alot and gotten the robe twice. I think its a great NM to camp for a couple of reasons. #1 in my experience he always spawns after 22-28 game hours from the last spawn so you know when to stop killing orcs and get ready for the spawn. #2 there are a ton of orcs in the area that you can kill to pass the time which have some decent drops and also give gil. I made about 3k-4k gil plus item drops waiting for the spawn.#3 when killed even if he doesnt drop the robe you get an easy 3k from the hermits wand. this NM has been a big part of my income and is woth the time spent camping it.

every time i fight him i never get the robe.. ive gotten it once outta 10 trys but.. at least he drops sumthin everytime.

Yea i camped this thing like a few weeks ago as a lvl 23rdm and some one else got it like 5 times and one guy was nice and gave me a wand then i got it once and got the wand:( so i went back and got 3k each for the wands and also 2.3k for the bat wings that i collected while camping and i also almost got to lvl 24 just by killing the orcs around the camp site. so i had enough money to get my spells and went back to quifim and got to lvl 26 and went back and desided to camp it once before i go searching for the key and it took an hour like always(sometimes it takes longer but its almost always an hour between spawns) for it to spawn and i was all alone hehe so it spawned and i killed it easy and woot i got it the robe hehe then i went and fought 3 orc and got the key that fast hehe and i minded a spot and got zinc ore which i made into a brass ingot hehe wow i had luck that night:)

I was in need of only a few K gil, and dont have many good farming ideas yet (only a 22thf/15mnk) so I figured that I would just go to Ghelsba and grab a stack of fire crystals. Everything was conning TWTBW, so I moved into the Grotto. I see this NM, and checked it. Of course it came up Impossible to Gauge. Since I failed to do my research, I didnt know how hard it would actually be. I did a shout to let people know it had spawned, and went back to the orcs.
Now I know to keep a look out for this one, since I figure I can take it.

story time:
from mining the night before i logged on about 2 map squares form the spawn point, so i head over there, and a nice paladin /tells me "it should spawn in about 5 min", and low and behold it did.
everyone was turned the other way, so i take a few steps forward and hit my dia macro.
then i get the message "Donuchi's casting has been interrupted." ><
hit macro again, "unable to cast spells at this time", hit macro again, half way done casting, paladin turns around and provokes it ><
easy fight, the paladin only got hermits wand, and im sittin there hatin my self
just a story.....

I was helping a friend on a mission in the so when we had finnished I had decided to to go fight orcs in the Yughott Grotto a friend had told me about the robe, that it was very expensive and where the nm spawns. so I went to the spawning point and just killed some weak mobs while I wait. About 15 mins later I saw him spawn so I went and attacked him he used his 2 hr and I still won. this was my first time fighting him. it turns out he dropped the robe. LUCKY ME.
