Hate
# Feb 02 2006 at 7:14 PM Rating: Decent
Do these store hate like Tonberrys do. Got that feeling today after getting around 18k xp and pld 68. It started getting more and more critical attacks in, and doing 500+ dmg when doing stomp. Cant remember it doing any more than 250 before. If this is the case, how do i release hate from mobs in this area.

ramsey it's about time someone other than me noticed the atrocity they did to the catoblepas name. and for the record with any ability that can and should be stopped STUN is the way to go.
Now drop Catoblepas Hides

Since the December update or soon after, they started dropping Catoblepas Hides. Don't know what to do with them except that Journeyman ranked Leathercrafters can turn them into leather using the usual formula. The guild NPC didn't say anything more than that. ; ;

Wow these mobs are easy for a 75RDM/37NIN to solo, I was surprised. I was like 9700/10000 for a merit point so a 67 Samurai buddy and myself decided to head to Bibiki Bay for the point :P. Used all buffs, with Utsusemi Ni. Debuffed the mob with everything, and Gravity for good measure. Didn't miss THAT much, but I didn't have much accuracy gear but an Assault Jerkin with a lowly +3 Accuracy. Didn't DoT it just in case. Also, I had up baraero and barsilence just in case for cold stare.

With Slow, this mob is slow enough to almost perfectly line up with your Ni and Ichi cast, making it fairly easy to blink tank it. Paralyze effect at times also is a nice bonus. I took no damage what so ever from the first one, except the SAM when we did Savage Blade > Gekko and he pulled hate.

Only one time did Cold Stare silence me. I had Baraero + Barsilence up at the time. The effect lasted literally 10 seconds, so don't worry about it.

Gave about 90 or so EXP a kill in a duo. Got my merit point in no time! ^^ We also did Facinators, the bird things as well as a Tropical Rarab. The bunny was the hardest thing we fought >.>;. Not to make this much of a brag post, but RDM can solo a Catoblepas, and probably a lot of the other tough mobs except maybe the Anglers and above using melee tactics. Using food (meat mithkabob) my damage was 40-50 a hit, using a Martial Anelace and Joyeuse. 400-500 damage Savage Blades. 60-80 damage a hit on a Berserk Cato >.>. Just make sure you bring a lot of Shihei to burn since our evasion is non-existant on these mobs. Good luck ;)

It was more it COULD be easy for an RDM/NIN to solo. Rest assured I went back a few months later to earn another merit point, solo. Still did it fairly easy, sorry for not being clear.

At lvl 65 RDM I was getting .4 and .5 skillups on enfeeb from them. My enfeeb was capped at level 64. This leads me to believe they have a minimum level of 74 or 75.
The ony way to be sure is if a nice level 75 person would /check them to see if they DC, EM, or Tough.

Catoblepas:

Healing breeze; Heals 600-1300 HP.

Cold Stare; (Gaze type) Silence to all enemys directly in front of the catoblepas looking at it(Has a very limited range).

Sonic wave; (Front type) Defense down to all enemys in front of catoblepas. Effect wears off gradually. (300Def > 130)

Berserk; Causes berserk effect

Stomping; (Direct attack) Eats 1 shadow, 120-500dmg on ninja(400+ is very rare).

Some other useless move(whistle); AGI Boost.

Catoblepas has:
double attack
They move slowly
The TP move (All above moves) seem to be random...

sometimes they use healing breeze 10 seconds in and heal 150hp, or berserk, its very random.

Recomended PT 65-66 minimum, with a very good setup.
these guys gave up to 294 chain 5 at 67.

Tartarus eft:

These guys are okay... they are weak but have some nasty AoEs.

These are all i can remember:

Toxic Spit; (Front type) causes 13hp/tick(?) poison to persons in front of the eft.

Gheist wall(sp?); (AoE type) Dispels 1 beneficial status effect from party members in a certain radius (Utsusemi, protect but not food).

Nimble snap; (Direct type) This move sucks.
Eats 3 shadows(yes, 3) and can deal 200-600dmg easily(ninja).

Some move i forget; (AoE type) AoE Stun + Damage, i am not too certain but i think it ignores shadows. stun lasts 2-3 secs and damage is about 150-200.

Double attack
Low physical/magic defense.
Non aggro links by sound
Easily slept
Recomended PT 66-67 minimum. 150-170 (no chain)at 69.
Tasty Camels.

There's a large amount of luck involved with these too, if they decide to use berserk at the beginning of a battle they can and probably will be dead after an SC, but depending on their mood, sometimes they like to heal 2k HP instead.

Mixing these in with gobs we were getting chain #5 every time, and very good exp, most was 280 on a chain, but we tend to go for less exp per mob, more chains. But goblins probably won't cut it in a level or two, we were getting 110-180 chains off them.(67/68+).

These do not aggro but they link with Marine Dhalmels. This is good to know when someone trains them to the zone.

We killed those today in a lvl 60-63 pt, most times chain #3 (390exp), rarely chain#4 (for 420exp).
RNG,RNG,BRD,NIN,RDM,BLM
6000-7000 exp/h, not bad.

I don't recomment fighting efts with nin they got ugly ws which takes all shadows >_>''

I would recomment NOT trying to exp on these with level 67 melee.

In Greek, catoblepas means "that which looks downward". As its head is so heavy, this ironclad bull constantly looks downward. If it was not for this, the creature would have destroyed all life as its eyes cast immediate death, and its breath will do the same, much like the basilisk. This African creature is said to eat poisonous shrubs and bushes, and is quite sluggish. Some have compared it to the gnu, another African creature, as the gnu often holds its head near to the ground. In the middle ages, the catoblepas was sometimes called a gorgon, because of its ability to kill with sight.

In previous FF games Catoblepas was a behemoth. Somewhat sad they chose Dhlamel here, as its quite the opposite of something always staring down but oh well ^^!

I was killing these 64-66, we were getting chain 4-5 300+ on chain 5 the party set up was RNG DRK WHM BLM PLD BRD, the exp was great, I highly recommend it.

They use Berserk, Slug Shot does over 2k damage when this is going, take advantage of that.

Healing breeze can make fights drag on an insane amount. Nothing worse then hitting it with a good light SC, then to have it heal back half the damage you just delt ;/

It is called Nukeing
Being a summoner it is not hard but keep Tp attacks saved till about 55% through its health. all in all they never get a chance to regain there health
We got to skillchain 5 and we got anywhere from 120-300 exp per fight

These are a very safe kill yes and drop pretty good xp in the 68<70 range. But they can be very exhausting and take a long while to take down. They hace a move called "Healing Breeze" that heals them for between 300-600 HP which when used multiple times a fight can slow things down trying to kill.

Confirmed, 165-240exp (from chains) with a lvl 68-69 party. Took quite some killing, and you will need someone with Erase though, they tend to use a Defence down move that can cause you to get hit pretty hard.
