General Information

Tiamat's Spawn Location
Tiamat's Spawn Location

    • Respawn time is approximately 72-120 hours after the last Time of Death, or 36-72 hours after a server maintenance when the servers are offline.

      • Thirty minute intervals between each window.

  • Susceptible to Sleep, Stun, Slow, and Elegy. Immune to Lullaby. Resistant to Silence and Paralyze.

  • Every two minutes, Tiamat will fly into the air, where she'll stay for two minutes before coming to the ground again. During this time, melee attacks will have no effect on her (magic and ranged attacks can still affect her though). While she's in the air, her normal attacks are magical, fire based attacks that cannot be absorbed by shadows, but can be reduced by damage reduction, magic defense, magic reduction, and fire resist effects (through gear, spells, job abilities, etc). While she is in the air, she cannot be slept (Sleep will land on her, but it will wear off immediately)

  • At approximately 25% hp, Tiamat receives a large attack boost that cannot be dispelled. This effect will remain until Tiamat is killed (it won't wear off even if Tiamat's hp regenerates higher than 25%). Denoted by Tiamat holding her wings upright.

  • Has a draw-in effect

  • Has an auto-regen effect that cannot be dispelled.

  • Grants title: Tiamat Trouncer

Tiamat's Special Abilities

  • Firaga III: AoE Fire based magic spell (Circle of effect originates from spell target).

  • Blaze Spikes: Inflicts Fire based magical damage against all that melee Tiamat. Effect can be dispelled.

  • Horrid Roar: Single target full Dispel and Enmity reset effects.

  • Absolute Terror: Single target Terror effect. Target is unable to perform any action until effect wears off.

  • Tebbad Wing: AoE magical damage with an additional Plague effect.

  • Fiery Breath: Frontal cone AoE Fire based magic damage. Damage is the strongest on anyone directly in front of Tiamat. Recommended for all tanks to stand on Tiamat's front legs to reduce damage taken.

    • Tiamat will only perform Fiery Breath while on the ground.

  • Touchdown: AoE damage. Wipes shadows. Tp move is performed when Tiamat lands on the ground after being in the air.

  • Inferno Blast: Strong AoE Fire based magic damage.

    • Tiamat will only perform Inferno Blast while in the air.

  • Spike Flail: Massive AoE physical damage. Absorbed by three shadows. Will only occur when a character has drawn hate from behind it.

    • Tiamat cannot perform Spike Flail while in flight.

  • Mighty Strikes: All melee physical attacks performed by Tiamat will now be critical hits. At approximately 85% hp, Tiamat will begin to use this ability, and will often use it once after each time in the air. Denoted by the characteristic mob two-hour animation.

    • Tiamat will not perform Mighty Strikes while in flight.

Note: All AoE moves will hit anyone within range, regardless if they or their alliance has hate on Tiamat or not.

Tiamat in Riverne - Site #B01

  • Tiamat possesses the same abilities as her full strength counterpart in Attohwa Chasm, though has a decidedly lower amount of HP.

Historical Background

In Mesopotamian mythology, Tiamat (Tamtu in Sumerian) is a giant female dragon which was the primordial creatrix of all existence said to have created the world and the gods, though this world had no land and was a vast water-world, filled with the waters of chaos. Tiamat personified the saltwater (ocean) while her consort Apsu (Abzu in Sumerian) personified the 'sweetwater' (freshwater).

It was the amalgamation and intermingling of these waters that created the gods. In the Enuma Elish (Mesopotamian creation epic), the gods were a persistent annoyance to Tiamat & Apsu, so the two decide to kill all their children. The god Ea discovers their plan and pre-emptively slew Apsu or, in some myths, casts a spell that puts him in a death-like sleep (since the waters of Apsu still exist even after his 'death'). Seeking vengeance for Apsu's death, Tiamat bore an army of monsters and assigned her consort, Kingu, to be their general.

Tiamat was slain by Marduk (see Marduk's Armor), who held her in place using a net of pure wind before releasing a flurry of arrows down her throat and then cleaving her body in two. The upper half created the heavens and the lower half created the Earth.

This is listed as a regular mob, but I'm 95% sure when I /checked it, it conned ITG, just so you know. If nothing else it's a 24-hour pop (according to several sources and my observations) which points to the whole HNM bit. I watched a group of 4 pts take this thing on tonight after a pt broke and I was impressed, I'd estimate its HP in the 20-25,000 range, given the rate damage was chipping away its HP, and it seemed to regen. AoE isn't that bad except for a tank, I got hit several times with stoneskin up and only took 400 ish damage. But he used one attack (fire-elemental something) that hit one of the LS's mages for 1,284 damage. I then backed up and recast stoneskin. Seems links are the biggest danger, it's windy there a lot, with high-level elementals spawning near the fighting area, and some bombs pop there as well, they may be correlated to the NM, though, I didn't see any away from Tiamat unless they were trained. They use this nasty little AoE Burn attack that chips away your HP 18 at a time, Erase removes it. Looks fun, some day when I'm an uber-leet 75 smn I'll take him out. Happy Hunting :)

I Highly doubt that Tiamat only has 25000 health just thing of it like this about 12 people smacking it at a time for around 50-100 each for about 2-3 hours

For those who are interested in the mythological origins of this dragon, you might be interested to know that Tiamat is female. ^^

Just a little comment.

Does any one know how useful DRGs are against her? I hear they can intimidate dragoons while fighting dragons ,since it's there specialty, and their jumps can probably reach it while flying. If course it will be hard to keep their Wyverns alive but you got the idea.

EXTREME ls beat this earlier today on Shiva server. I believe we are the first NA ls (or one of the first) on any server to beat him without allying another ls. Pretty tough fight, especially at the end. Tebbard Wing back to back to back makes it interesting for a Taru BLM ^^.

First NA ls ever on any server? #.# lol

Must've missed that official press release from SE on CNN's breaking news. I still kick myself to this day when SE announced that I was the first female elvaan ps2 SMN on any server to hit 75 as well. :/ See how silly you sound now?

A dynamis ls on my server decided to take this on with an alliance of just SMN and BST's. Took it down, took it down hard!!!!

Today DragonSlayer LS (Alliance of ArchDominus and Lunarians) defeated Tiamat. She dropped both Kote and Gaiters. Need a second alliance group to deal with adds, lots of Arch Corses and Air Elementals like to spawn there. Arch Corses are fun because they can charm pt members into attacking you. Tiamat Trouncer is the title for beating this one.

Speaking of old time FF legends what about Omega and Shinryu from FF5 and the WEAPON creatures from later games? It would be cool to have something like that as well.

People who say they killed him or have seen him being killed by small groups of people obviously have absolutely no idea as to how hard Tiamat is. He has insane magic resistance and all melee's including RNG are virtually worthless. He spams Firaga III like none other and uses an AoE attack Tebbard Wing which causes aoe plague and can deal some serious damage. He uses the 2hr Mighty Strikes every 15 mins or so, and antlions, elementals pop all throughout the area. Not to mention the Arch Corse which pop at night and con VT to lvl 75. A full alliance of DD is needed for the actual fight and at least one other alliance is needed to clear out all of the adds. Fighting with just one alliance is not possible, the adds + the dragon himself would rip anyone to shreds.
Sry, not as hard as Vrtra
# Jan 11 2005 at 2:57 PM Rating: Default
I've seen a couple things relating to the most difficult mob to beat in the game, and by far this is no where near Vrtra. (Let alone only 2 ls's have proven they've killed it on every server combined). The fact is that Vrtra has 1-40 lvl 82 undead (VT to lvl 75's) pop around it, so you almost need an entire alliance devoted to killing the **** popping around it. Where Tiamat spawns solo w/ maybe a few other mobs if they happen to come that way. Tiamat has way better drops tho, Vrtra has that enchantment provoke hat and stuff for brd JSE...

I am currently playing FF1-2 for the GBA, and one of the four fiends in it is called Tiamat! I'm beggining to see more and more connections between the first FF and this one. {hmmm....}

This Tiamat doesn't even look like any of the previous Tiamats (I think in 1 and 9). Tiamat originally had like 5 heads or something, and I believe was blueish... Doubt there is a connection other then the fact that they're supposed to be strong (although I highly doubt he's level 95 in FF1).

No, Tiamat wasn't lvl 95 in FF1, but in a big hall outside Tiamat's room was the original FF bad*ss, the Warmech, which would be as close a challenge as FF1 had to offer compaired to the HNM's in FFXI. Warmech also had a very low spawn rate too, so it was very much like a NM.

Well, I just installed CoP and the first thing that I wanted to do was poke Tiamat. And poke I did.

With Sneak/Invis, a level 25 WHM, (or a lvl1 anything with the proper amount of prisms and oils), can easily go find him ^^

Go to (F-5) of the Maze of Shakrami, and then go to (E-8) (i believe) of Attowah Chasm, and bam! He's killed you before you know it XD

I watched as 14 people in Priceless, an old HNMLS on Siren, killed it in about 2 hours, after 2 hours of figuring out how to fight him.

The order of the day is Summoners, and timing Leviathan's Spinning Dive when he lands after taking flight. This easily outdamaged all the rangers and blackmages in their alliance put together. If they'd had more than 3 summoners and a fourth tank, they probably could have killed it in an hour.

Oh, and as with all dragons, making sure he doesn't turn to face anybody but the 2-3 tanks you MUST have with you during the fight. Pity now that the Summoner strategy is out of the bag, that nobody will try any other strategies. He's hard if only because of the fact that he's unmeleeable half the time (he flies in the air a lot), has unbelievable magic resistance, and the VT Arch Corses/Bombs/Elementals that spawn near him are no picnic either (they had 2-3 members pull away the adds every time instead of wasting time killing them).
Doubt a 18 member alliance can win?

doubt 18 people could beat tiamat. Well, your wrong LOL. we have 7 SMN and 9 BST, 2WHM. It takes about 2hrs to take him down, but its a very well oil'd operation. Fight smarter ... not harder ... dont go in hackin' away with a scythe, you'll die faster than you can target tiamat.

Tiamat is at present listed as a normal mob. Shouldn't she go on the NM list along with Vrtra and Jormungand?

Does anyone know if she's been beaten on Garuda? I would love to fight, or even see, her one day as I love dragons. At level 34 though, I don't think those Antlions would be too forgiving when my Sneak / Invis wear off. :)

Also, the "Tiamat Trouncer" title has to be the best one I've seen. Must be so proud walking around with that on!

I checked a random person. She had the title of "Tiamat Trouncer"

I think it's a pretty safe bet this is the title you get for beating this thing.
