Giant Scale drop rate

I just soloed several of these guys as BST/NIN (they totally ate me up as /WHM). In 3 successful kills, I got 2 Giant Scales. So the Giant Scale isn't a 100% drop. But unless I was extremely lucky, the drop rate for it seems to be quite high.

Edit (10/6/07): I used my last 2 scales on a CoP 2-5 attempt that wiped, so I went to farm some more scales. Today, I got 2 Giant Scales in 6 kills. They didn't come as fast as my first farming session. But overall, I still got 4 Scales in 9 mobs, which is a pretty high drop rate (close to 50%).

0/2 at the moment, but he was down to 2% the second time.

#1 gear for evasion - he hit me for 60-120 as galka. I was using sushi, but coming back with jack-o-lanterns.

#2 Bring antidotes. Has a special which poisons, (Tail Crush, I think), and it's fairly nasty. Why not poisona? Well, I'm galka, you see...

#3 Has another special move, Dread Shriek, which paralyzes.

#4 Pull with Kurayami - Wyverns are weak to dark magic, so blind should stick. Having a hard time sticking Hojo and Jubaku, but my Ninjutsu skill is pretty far from capped atm.

#5 Bring a reraise scroll or potion - it's a long walk.

Edit: #6 Radiant Breath for 317 dmg, plus silenced me. 0/3. Bring Echo Drops.

Edit: #7 Dispelling wind. Bye buffs, bye Reraise.

Whoever solos these must be a lucky *******.

Wow. I dont even remember making that post....

Anyway, I've since found that I can solo these as Thf/nin.
Sleep Bolt, Sneak Attack, repeat. Use WS if you want to, just not Viper Bite or Wasp Sting - additional effect Poison = no slept mob.

At the first area you run into the Drakes, head south to a Portal and camp there. If things get dicey, land a sleep bolt and zone outta there.

Dread Shriek can be a problem, but the paralyze effect doesn't last too long.
Drakes also have an Evasion Up move, which dropped my ranged hit rate down to about 1/5 or 1/6. If you've kept up your shadows to that point, you should be able to get through it.

My gear was almost all Ranged Accuracy, with a little Evasion:

2 Archer Knives
Zamburak +1 (gotta get another Rikonodo :P)
Emperor Hairpin
Peacock Amulet
Dodge Earrings
No Body armor O.o
Battle Gloves
+Racc Rings total +11 Racc
Night Cape
belt...uh...><
Noct +1 legs
Leaping Boots

Squid Sushi for food.

Sneak Attack did like 160. I'm sure I could improve on that with some DEX gear swapped in. Will probably try and refine the setup a bit, maybe use AF dagger for one of the Archer Knives. Probably don't need THAT much Ranged Accuracy.
But right now, it works.

If you don't spam bolts at them, try and stay at max distance as much as possible, to avoid getting hit with a special attack when they wake, as well as conserving shadows/extending the timers. Keep in mind that they can pull a move on you the moment you hit them with a SA, too.

Another tip: You can't tell by /check-ing the mobs what levels they are (they all con Tough), BUT, because dmg variance on ranged attacks is so much more tight than melee, you can tell them apart by the damage your first sleep bolt does. You can fire one off, zone, come back and shoot another, etc..until you see the difference. Higher damage = lower mob level. It makes a noticeable difference in the mob's HP, and how quickly you can kill.

Also - Because of the level cap, xp gained is 1/2 normal if your job is over level 40.

Level 41 mob = 62xp (125 if job is 40 or below)
Level 42 mob = 75xp (150)
Level 43 mob = 100xp (200)

Will my Dragon Killer trait and Ancient Circle work on these cause it says wyvern family but they're really similar to dragons.

you should know by now that all wyvnern/dragons are affected by dragon killer. that is why your wyvern is intimidated by a demon, and a demon is indimidated by a wyvern. that is because wyvern/dragon all are same type therefore affected by dragon killer and oposing type of monster. needless to say, whoveer goes to this are will need a couple of drgs for ancient circle weeeeee!
Is it a HNM?

i think this might be a mistake.

i have seen this guy following a dragoon in the desert place when i was fighting lizards. He was helping the dragoon during fights and stuff. I tried to attack him, before I realized it was following that guy, but the game wouldnt let me attack it :/

I'm going to guess the picture wasn't up when he posted this. And IIRC one of the pet names you can pick as a dragoon is Firewing. So possibly this is what caused the confusion.

::EDIT:: I don't think it's possible to actually charm a dragon. Their one of the uncharmable mobs. Possibly some new broth is out there that allows you to call a dragon familiar... That would be cool ^.^

Maybe the guy was a BST and tamed one. It is possible if your an ultra husky BST with a helluva lotta CHR.

Just would like to note that you can't charm Wyverns no matter what =) They are one of the uncharmable kind of mobs. Charm only binds them.
