BLU hunting
# May 25 2006 at 10:28 AM Rating: Decent
im @33 on my BLU and these types of mobs give me a lvl 32 spell i need, these are the lowest lvl in the game. Ive been hunting for a couple hours now and no spell yet. only 5 pops. i recommend that any blus hunting for "Sound Blast" go to sarumangue campain where there are more frequent pops. SE needs to put more in this area for sure.

I've gone over this entire map of Meriphataud Mountains in search of these things and have only found 3 of them.

2 spawn at the far east just below the spine @ J-8. If only one is there then the other is then the other is somewhere between positions H-8 & I-9. The other position a friend just found at G-8 but that was only one, a possible fluke. Anywayz if someone at SE ever reads this post pass it along the chain to put more of them in Meriphataud mountains.

I found 3 Spawns: H-8 South west corner, J-8 below the spine, G-8 (probably wandered into G-8 from F-8).

There is a NM here now, ChonChon @ F-8, that might be up, don't mistake it for an Axe Beak if youre hunting @ 35~.

I often see 1 in the north-western section of (F - 9), however, the spawn location that you mentioned is very reliable. No one ever hunts them (it seems) so they're nearly always available.

Thanks for the info! Rate up! ^^

Edit: Also, respawn rate is 10 minutes.

only one?

While this is an easy kill for me, I have only seen one of these in the montains and I can't find any others at all.

This is on thefar east of the map past the crag line that runs in the air and the ground just a bit of there to the south.

other aera after corming this place on a chocobo.
Did not see any. :(

Hey all,

I have a lvl 35 RDM with a BLM sub. The axe beak isn't that difficult as long as you are the one hunting it. (Not it hunting you). You -need- stoneskin, phalanx and blink on, rested, and with full MP.

More often than not, you can kill these giant chickens with more than enough HP/MP left in your ******* (and resist petrify is invaluable here). However, sound vaccumn and petrify (when it lands) will definitely take you down to the red zone.

Even if that is the case, you still have a chance of winning provided you have enough MP, etc. Regen is a good idea too.

lvl35mnk/thf took 1 down with no difficulty, was only doing about 15 dmg per hit to me and I was averaging 30 per fist. Lost about 200hp but stole a giant feather and got one as a drop so well worth it since these sell for 25k a stack on phoenix.

I must have caught a weak one... 29THF/14WAR I was able to take it down with about 100hpts to spare. I had eaten some meat jerky, and had just fought a lizzy so my tp was up. Successful SA of about 135pts to start.

Luckily the Axebeak did some sonic AOE which lowered my INT (which put it down to about 2 lol). I had 517hpts at the time...

Checked as easy to me...

Thse things drop Cockatrice meat, do they drop it in multiples, like a few at a time..with TH. or like 1 at a time?

They're supposed to drop a giant feather I need for a quest, but these Axe Beaks have no feathers!!!

Definitely 1 at a time, the drops are pretty scarce about 1/10 w/o TH. I have had them drop feathers or skins w/ the meat but never 2 meats.
RE: drop?
# Jan 03 2005 at 7:03 PM Rating: Decent
With TH, you only get a better chance of getting a meat, and you would likely only get one meat per drop other than the crystal, feather or skin. But TH doesnt multiply the drop.

probably one at a time, considering how expensive they are and how hard they seem to be to find.

I stumbled upon one of these guys at G-9. 33/15 MNK/THF he was hitting me for 37-45 damage each time. Finally beat him with 383/680 hp.

stupid chickens.... the sound like chickens.. gobble like chickens.. well maybe theyre prehistoric chickens, like everything else in this place.

And even subbing thf, it they still dont drop meat that often :( . Lvl 40 drk can solo them easy even if the petrify you for a bit; just whip out drain when your no longer stoned.

well there goes my hopes of a cheaper way to make mithkabobs. 2 hours and i only got 6 pieces of meat.

wouldn't a 30 or so RDM have a better chance than a 30 BLM? cause of resist petrify and all...

Actualy, as a taru blm ive never had them try to petrify me. When they break free of bind, they dont get enoght tp befor killing me.
# Aug 13 2004 at 4:48 AM Rating: Decent
It is possible to farm these, as a lv30 taru blm. But, if they break free of bind too fast id suggest warping out.
# Aug 09 2004 at 7:12 AM Rating: Default
question : 59 blm 28 whm, can i kill these things safely? will i resist petrification? or will i die if it does that

Axe beak spawn area is J-8 spawns every 5-10 mins, im 50 blm/15thf and i kill it with 1 Freeze, get drop 2/3 times. good money for not having to pay much attention. they only aggro me if im resting.

I farm these guys as a lvl 41 Dragoon/19 Thief. I can get a stack in about an hour and a half, less if it's a good day. I do really well against them... Thief's Treasure Hunter helps with the drops, Silence doesn't do much to hinder me and if I'm petrified my Dragon does well in finishing them off. Plus you can Steal the feathers from them and those (on Pandemonium) sell for about 5-700/ea, but I use them in a Windurst Repeatable Quest at the Hat Shop in Windy Waters that gives 1500 gil + Fame for every 3.
# Jul 09 2004 at 3:05 AM Rating: Default
Anybody know the location of where these guys spawn?

You can find them in the Southeast area of the Meriphataud Mountains. Starting at (J-8), just below the Drogaroga's Spine, along the ridge area and down to (K-11).

Mages watchout, Axe Beak has Sound Vacuum; which can silence you.

Happy Hunting!
Farm it now or wait?
# Jun 22 2004 at 10:56 AM Rating: Decent
Could a lv 25 war and a lv 25 mnk take this or should I wait till we're 30+?
RE: Farm it now or wait?
# Jun 22 2004 at 11:33 AM Rating: Decent
You may be able to, but I really don't think it's worth it. Farm crawlers or something else because, for one, the spawn rate here is very slow. Another is that at your level you may still get aggro from nearby gobs.

I farmed axe beaks for a bit when I was around 32, and even then I had some close calls. Without a thief sub, I'd say you might make... 8k an hour doing this. Split it between the two of you and that's 4k. Trust me, farming crawlers is much better than axe beaks, and they WILL kill you if they manage to petrify you at your level.

Can a level 30 BLM taru beat this thing?!!!

Answer: no. It will petrify you and you will die. Come back when you are a 40 taru BLM, and even then you're competing for spawns.
# Jun 09 2004 at 2:56 PM Rating: Decent
could a level 30 blm solo this? I cook and want the meat for mithkabobs / biscuits.

they spawn in the area on the map that says "Galesmouth"?

i went searching for these things and couldn't find any. T_T

they pop just south of the crag like structure in the middle of the mountains, just east of the road. they will pop every 10 minutes for a while and then not pop for a hour, depending on the day of the week and/or the weather.
Found one...

jordache, you've mistaken Waraxe Beak ( NM ) for a axe beak. I got killed by him yesterday while farming, was funny since he aggroed me from like a mile away and casted gravity 2 on me, then proceeded to kick my butt with 3 x 150dmg attacks ^^;
# Mar 02 2004 at 4:06 PM Rating: Default
I think his level is grossly underrated. He hit me with a Stonega IV for 800+ dmg at level 40...

# May 25 2004 at 11:35 PM Rating: Decent
no... thats WAR AXEBEAK he is lvl 55-56 and the only
tabar beak type thingy that can cast stonega IV here's a link to him. http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/bestiary.html?fmob=576 ^^ just be careful of what you agro next time
