  • When initially aggroed, Diabolos will draw in everyone in the party of the player that aggroed him.

    • The Diabolos from Darkness Named is incapable of performing Dream Shroud.

  • Nether Blast - Single target Darkness based magic attack.

    • The Diabolos from Darkness Named is incapable of performing Ruinous Omen.

OH MY GOD!!!

do u know Sleep works on him?

do u know Lullaby also works on him?

O.o?

Excellent.

Ele. seal + sleep = 100% works
w/o Ele. seal + Sleep = 50% chance works

haven't seen Lullaby yet, but I heard it works very well. (I think it's better than Sleep)

Attack Nightmare, OMG, I hate that attack!!!
Bring few of _____ au Lait (HP regen food) unless u can get a drk w/Stun to join...

one of the Forum over here have a good idea, use Stun WS to stop him from using Nightmare.

BTW, have any1 felt down to the Platform?
well, I did, and when u felt down, u don't died right away. the monsters down there will kill you, if u felt down the platform

I also have a question, how many time(s) did Diabolos use "Platform remove" while u battled with him?

we had tried about 8 times, and he only use "Platform remove" when he's @ somewhat below 50% of the HP. But have any one seen him using "Platform remove" more than once?

cuz I found out there are 4 types/ways of "Platform remove"

1.
O X O X O
O O O O O
O O X O O X = No Platform
X O X O X O = Platform
X O O O X

2.
X O O O X
O O X O O
X O O O X
O O X O O
X O O O X

3.
O O O X X
O X O O O
O X O X O
O O O X O
X X O O O

4. Safest Platform to stay on! (X = NO, O = YES Plateform)
X X O X X
O X X O O
X O X X X
X X O O X

The floor where you do the BCNM is 5x5, the same tiles always drop. The layout is:

OXOXO
OOOOO
OOXOO
XOXOX
XOOOX

where X = tiles that drop (not safe), and O = tiles that do not drop (safe).

another site recommended this battle arrangement:

OXOXD
OOOOO
OOXOO
XOXOX
XMOOX

where D = diabolos/melee and M = mages.

for my pt (2x rdm, 2x rng, whm, pld), this was modified to:

RXOXP
OOOOO
OOXOO
XOXOX
XMOOX

where R = rngs, P = pld, M = mages.

***Most Useful Discovery***

in the course of the battles we did, we found that nightmare -only- hits areas where there are ppl who have gotten hate.

***********************

two of the times we tried this fight, rngs and mages were together, and everyone got slept. once we split our group up like that, the battle went much smoother.

we also found out that you -do- wake up eventually, not that you really want to go to sleep, but length of the sleep seems to vary with how much hate you have... i (whm) didn't sleep for very long, if i even got slept, on the first nightmare (2nd nightmare is a different story, since all of our battles went differently). however, the rngs slept indefinitely and were always cured to be woken up.

other notes:

most enfeeblements don't stick, and they seem to stick less on lightsday/darksday

diabolos -seemed- to be strongest on lightsday, several ppl in the pt commented that the battle was much like an avatar battle.

erase > bio is super important. ; ; there is no medicine equivalent to erase.

---

successful battle:

rngs/mages/tank in separate areas
whm hasted self, cured only pld, erased pld first
1 rdm/whm only cast curaga on rngs, sometimes assisted in healing pld, but stayed as far from diabolos as possible
1 rdm stayed in range of diabolos to enfeeble and occassionally nuke and cure pld
2 rngs ranged atk the whole time, 1 rng used stun bullets, which seemed to stun about 50% of the time
1 pld ... um, did pld stuff :]

all 2hrs were up, rngs 2hrd at about 30% health and left diabolos with about 10% health. pld died, 1 rng died, all mages had low mp.

last rng held hate, everyone gathered when rng had about 10% health, i did benediction, rdms converted and nuked, and we won.

Positioning
# Mar 05 2005 at 5:22 PM Rating: Decent
Just some more info on the fight... One of the most important things is to keep good positioning... If you are spaced far enough away from the tank his AoE sleep is not such a crucial part of the battle... When I did it the mages stood on the square that Diablos starts at and the tank (nin) stood on the opposite side and one square to the left. I myself only got Bio once and was slept once because the nin lost hate for a few seconds. Anyways thats my 2 cents and hope it helps you...
Diabolos- Terrestrial Avitar of Dreams
# Mar 02 2005 at 10:28 PM Rating: Decent
I doubt its worth it at this point but...

Diabolos is Classified Incorrectly

Diabolos is not a Demon. Sure, hes black and red and evil looking. But he has no connection to Kindred (Demons).

Terrestrial Avatar of Dreams

Of course, this probably dosent matter to very many people, I beleive that the spread of missinformation to such a broad audience can be annoying. People quote Allakazham on incorrect subjects all the time orz... Anyways, although it is not possible to preform a pact with this Terrestrial Avatar, he is indeed an Avatar. Avitar signifies a Diety in the Case of Celestial Avatars, and a very powerful creature, reaching Demi-god type status when talking about Terrestrial avitars. Summoners create Astral Projections of Powerful creatures they prefrom pacts with.

Also you've classified the Vanguard's Summon as an Avatar, so its not like you've chosen only to put primes in there.

Guess where Kindred come from? Dynamis. Who rules Dynamis? Diablos. There's your connection.

(He is still an Avatar though.)

Stun Nightmare

Most parties will have a job that can use a Club or an Axe

PUT IT TO USE!

Me, as a SMN, equipped a club, took an icarus wing and just followed around Diabolos with 100%.

Diabolos Readies Nightmare.
Genius readies Brainshaker.
Diabolos takes 12 points of Damage.
Diabolos is no longer stunned.

I believe axe also has a stun WS, and sword too? Flat Blade.

Have ALL members that will be close to Diabolos switch to sword, club, or axe and take an Icarus Wing.

Chances are atleast one of those weaponskills will pull of the stun since "Chance of Stun varies with TP"

We were 0/3 while I was a RNG instead of SMN. Then I switch to SMN and we win.

We didn't break the record of 7:30, but we got pretty close at 8:53

A large part in winning this BCNM depends on whether or not Diabolos decides to spam Nightmare. Nightmare is an AoE Sleep+Bio attack that poison will NOT wake you from (and neither will the damage from Bio). The Bio itself really sucks, it takes off something like 15-20 HP/tic. Have everyone bring plenty of Persikos au Lait; a bard with double Paeon wouldn't hurt either.

Nightmare has an incredibly large radius. It is not possible to stand on the safe tiles and not get hit by Nightmare. Don't depend on your WHM to save you from Bio death, Erase is 20 second recast.

If Diabolos decides not to spam Nightmare, he's a pushover as long as you keep him silenced

Actually it is very possible for mages to avoid nightmare. It's a 5 by 5 grid. Mages should stand on (1,1) and diabolos shoudl be standing on (5,5). I guarantee if you have this arrangement your mages will avoid Nightmare, we did it about 13 times.

I'm not so sure about this honestly. I just killed Diabolos, and had +24 dark resist. 0/3 Nightmare resists, but I did seem to be getting partial resists (shorter duration) quite often.

Part of is probably luck / day of week / moon phase as well. But as you mentioned, you did gear partial resists which is still better than nothing. One thing is for sure, one person in my PT was wearing dual sniper rings and he was out cold even while being hit by Diabolos until someone cured him. A good 30 seconds, whereas the longest I ever slept in any of 4 runs where I was doing this +Dark thing was about 8 seconds. And like I said, I completely resisted a few (although we fought on a convenient moon phase)

My party consisted of: Paladin, Ranger, Ninja, White Mage, White Mage, Black Mage.

After failing once before with the same people, but different jobs (Pld, Rng, Thf, Whm, Brd, Blm), we developed this stratgey.

We didn't need Poison Potions, as three people could Elemental Seal + Silence, and even after those wore off, Diabolos never resisted any of the enfeebs (Silence/Slow/Paralyze/Bio). This takes care of the Sleepga problem without everyone's HP being eaten by Poison. (Bio is bad enough!)

After falling into battle, we set up on opposite corners of the grid. This way, the mages were out of Nightmare range and never got slept/Bio'd. Both White Mages chose people to Erase beforehand, so we didn't overcast. The plan was to move to the "safe tiles" at about 60%, to make sure nobody would fall.

He dropped the tiles at about 80%. (Perhaps the tile drop happens at a certain fight time, because it's definitely not at a certain HP.)

Luckily, the tiles actually blink a split second before they fall, and the only person on a blinking tile was the Blm, who appeared to have fallen on my screen, but it turned out he moved fast enough to another tile and he didn't fall.

We went into the battle with tons of Hi-Potions, however a lot weren't needed. The Paladin used about 10 Hi-Pots, only because the mages were getting low on MP near the end. Our only death was the Ranger who Eagle Eyed, then got Nightmared while he had hate. Our Ninja used Mijin Gakure at the very very end just so he could say he blew up Diabolos. Those were the only 2-hours used. Our time was 15 minutes. (Record of 12 minutes.)

Is this yet another reason why RNGs out-power any other melee? Seems to me they can stand on just about any tile and still shoot Diabolos, while the close combat melee run a risk of falling through the floor.

Only advice I can give on Melee's is make sure they are not locked onto Diabolos, that way when they see the tiles, they can react and move a lot faster

Just to update me and the linkshell I'm in the PromathianGuard took this monster down only an hour ago and broke the Gilgamesh record with a time of 9mins and 8 seconds. This besides the fact we had lost only 20min ago, and entered the battle under equiped in potions and a couple people did not have their 2 hours, including one of the rangers. Expect new CoP pictures in the future, as the linkshell moves on into chapter 4.

How I beat it

I beat this tonight with a PT set up of

3 RNG/NINs
1 SMN/WHM
1 WHM/SMN
1 PLD/WAR

We also had different positions of where we stood during fight, kinda hard to explain, but middle floor (where you fight Diabolos) the tiles are 5x5, and we sorta followed a grid that looked like this
...A B C D E
1 |_|_|_|_|_|
2 |_|_|_|_|_|
3 |_|_|_|_|_|
4 |_|_|_|_|_|
5 |_|_|_|_|_|

(Sorry for the periods, but only way I could get the grid to look right)

Lets say where Diabolos is at before he aggros is C-1..

when you're pulled in and ready to fight, the 3 RNG/NINs (and maybe BLM if you're using one) go right where Diabolos is (C-1)

The PLD/WAR Goes to E-2 (same with other melees)

The SMN/WHM and WHM/SMN (or other healers) go to A-2

Using this position set up, you can usually make sure only the melees (and maybe rangers) are only hit by AoEs besides Nightmare, we did this set up and when he was around 50 percent, our SMN used Astral Flow, after that, followed by our RNGs Eagle Eye Shot

Using this set up, we beat him in around 10 min. 53 sec, breaking the new record on my server

The worst Job you can bring in there would be a Thief. For the simple fact that you will be trying to do SATA(perhaps a usefull WS too), and then have the floor fall benieth you cuz later on you'll be put to sleep on the wrong spot hehe.

Is there a reason why you HAVE to do SATA? People seem to forget that it can be used seperatly - and besides, you can always do it at the begining of the fight because the floor doesn't drop till Dia's HP drops to 50%

THFs can help, that floor doesn't fall down untill Diabolos is around 50% or lower from what I've noticed, so if you SA/TA right off the bat, you should be fine
Quick Info
# Dec 09 2004 at 6:51 AM Rating: Excellent
I'm actually the person who took this picture so I can clean up some confusion on this monster. It’s actually called a summon before the battle, but you do not get Diabolos after winning the battle. My guess is that in a future update there will be a quest to get this monster if you’re past chapter 4. Sadly after that picture was taken I was defeated by Diabolos. That "Nightmare" attacks is deadly, poison and it hitting you will do nothing to wake you up. You still want poison for sleepga 2, but it won't help with Nightmare. Still the worst thing in the battle besides Nightmare is the floor falling from your feet. This is where sleepga and Nightmare come into play seeing you’re not going to be able to get off the square before it falls.

That’s why I marked on the picture which squares will never fall, to help parties build a battle plan in which you stay on those squares until the floor gives away, and you’re then able to move around safely without fear of it happening again. So when it comes down to it, Diabolos is a boss based on having some luck on your side, in which no one falls to the third floor because either Diabolos threw them off (yes sadly he can do this so keep your back to the wall of the battle field to prevent this) or the floor gives way. My party would have won if two players hadn’t been asleep when the floor gave way.

And one quick reminder, that for now, I have not found any way to return to the floor with Diabolos if you fall through the floor. It’s a instant death with all six diremites pouncing on any poor player to fall into there den.

I hope this helps.
Pics are not fake..sorta.

They're not fakes. Those pictures are real. Technically, speaking. The person that took the pics simply replaced Garuda's model with Diabolos' model. It's quite easy to pull off.

So....what's the deal with this guy, is he really a "new" avatar!!!? Does he like replace Fenrir or something, cause I always thought Fenrir was a poor choice for "dark" elemental when something more "evil" has been used for Dark element summons in the past games. In FF9 I think Fenrir was another Earth element, and in FF6 he did "blink" on the party or something useful, but never a "dark" type. So are there anymore new summons?

Diabolos is a monster you fight not an avatar. if he was an avatar im sure that some JP would have obtained him by now and we would see him all the time. the pic says garuda yes. All thats happened is they got the diabolos model in model viewer then put it on the battlefield screenshot. simple. if you look at the diabolos it looks smoother than the rest of the picture. its plain to see really.

why the hubub?
