I heard this mob was lv 60+ solable. I'm a lv 56 Rdm so I decided to come as /nin to have a chance. Had everything ready, food, ether, NPC pearl just in case. Spent three days trying to find him but not getting claim since the area is just so massive. Finally appeared for me right in the middle of the narrow western path after you leave Beadueax. Put up everything from Utsu to aquaveil and got ready to fight this NM.... He was laughably easy.

He missed I would say 80%+ of the time (he was blind but still) and w/ stoneskin and phalanx up, the times he did manage to hit me, it did 0 damage. Stoneskin finally ran out towards the end of the fight but I had also decided not to keep my phalanx, or any other enhancements up since I saw how easy the fight was going and he hit me for 31 damage... once. He went invincible at 50%, and did one cure III towards the end but neither really did him any good. He liked doing banish (did it 3 times) and flash (4 times) more than anything else. To just show again how bad his accuracy was, two out of the three shadows I had up were taken down by spells. I was doing between 30-40 damage (w/o en-damage) per swipe of each sword (Wise Wizard & Ryl.Grd Fleuret duo) The fight was more like trying to kill an inanimate object than fighting a mob. Only thing I had to worry about was reducing his Hit Points to zero.
I didn't get the drop, only 56 gil but now I know Bo'Who is definately [Too Weak] for lv56... well at least if you're a more soloing kind of job. I would imagine it would take a whm a long time of whacking him w/ a good mace to kill him. I would say that he's probably tough but soloble at lv 50 if you know what you're doing.. and he's probably a lv 40-something NM. I will try to get him again tomorrow but I'm definitely coming as /thf to hopefully get better drop rate and run around faster trying to find him... too bad I only have thf to 25 and rng at 1 cuz having both TreasHunt and widescan would help alot.

I didn't time the fight but for those that are rdms and have a feeling of enhancement durations... the fight was long enough that my haste, phalanx, spikes and enspell wore off... but not long enough that my aquaveil or barblind fell off. I think next time I'll only use my usual three fighting enhancements, haste, phalanx, and en-... maybe a barblind for kicks. I had full HP minus 31points and about 3/4 full mp. Only other spells I remember doing during the fight were two dispels to take off protect and later shell guard

For those that were wondering where he pops.. it's in that Triangular-ish shaped pathway formation near Beadeaux entrance in Passhow Marshlands. First time I saw him was on the Northern part of the triangle, the 2nd was in the large area on the SE side of the triangle w/ all the other quadav. The 3rd (the one I got the claim) was like I said before on the western part of the triangle right in the middle where it makes a bend. This is why it's so hard to find and claim him if you don't have widescan or are moving about non-stop. Widescan is extremely recommended! If not I would recommend to everyone else to jog around in a clock-wise formation around and around the triangle if you know the general spawn time...like NM spawn musical chairs if more than one person was camping it. This way you're bound to find him and either get claim, or get tod by seeing someone kill him since he has so much HP. At least you won't be standing around in a corner of the path, getting soaked, waiting for something that's not coming for another day since someone else killed him on the far side of the triangle. Hope this helps and I'll put tod and server once I get the drop.

*UPDATE*

Sorry about taking so long to repost but yeah, the next day I got claim and drop! This time he popped in the large part of the triangle w/ all the other Quadav. I came as a 56RDM/25THF The fight was slightly harder only cuz I was semi gimped and this time I got links from every quadav that came by but the fight was still EXTREMELY easy, I don't remember how much damage I got, but I know for sure I didn't even get to yellow health. The next day I helped someone get claim and drop so I'm 2/3. I would have put the tod up then but that's when the recent update happened so it wouldn't have been of any help : l. Sorry I couldn't give tod but I hope the info I put down helped. Oh the last time he popped again near the place where I first faught him.. up the western side of the triangle. Good Luck all! -Bairen

Just got him as a 55THF/27NIN. I was unprepared for him the first time, figured anything in Pashhow would be a weakling, and he and a few other Quadav ate me for breakfast. I came back a few mins later completely prepared and had myself a Quadav lunch. Got the shield too.

Anyone on Unicorn know the ToD or seen him recently?

LOL, I love how I answer my own questions within a day after I post it! :P

Killed it today & got the shield, so I am one happy RDM!

So here's the scoop for anyone on Unicorn:

Time of Death: 4:30pm CST

And for any day/weather/moon drop theorists:

Watersday, water effect, Waning Gibbous 81%

But...it didn't come so easily, and I came away with a pretty amazing story:

I started camping it around 2:00pm CST. After about an hour, another player told me, according to him, that the ToD was about 12:00am CST on Monday. So I'm doing the math in my head & I figure that earliest possible spawn would be 3:00pm CST today! So I start wide-scanning more enthusiastically.

At about 4:00pm CST, he popped & right near where I was (eastern area of the "ring"). I was so happy, I figured as a 62 RDM, I would be alright in fighting this thing. Used Convert, enfeebs, stoneskin, a little nuking, etc. and after a while he was down to about 1/10 health & 4 buddies had sinced linked >< I really hate how those damn beastmen help each other out. I was running out of MP & asked a LS friend to come & help out (74 THF). It was miraculous how he got a teleport so quickly & started on choco to where I was.

I usually play on my PS2, but I usually use my husband's PC to do guild points. After doing today's guild points, I just decided to try to camp this guy instead of logging out or switching to my PS2.

Well, all hell broke loose b/c my husband's stupid PC closed the game out without warning, as it sometimes does unfortunately...! I knew it would take too long for my PS2 to boot up, so I took my chances & start up the game again on the PC.

I get back on, somewhat bewildered on how I ended up with 200 HP LESS than when I DCd, and only about 6 MP! I have no refresh, no cure, no stoneskin, and this DRK vulture is just waiting for me to die!

I invited my LS buddy to my party, and waited while clinging to my 100 HP left... not good :/ I think about trying to pull it a little closer to him, but wasn't about to take any links with me...then I die. ><

I'm to the brink of crying (sad, I know) when I see the DRK die! So I bust into a seizure while telling my THF friend to hurry up & claim it while I HP back home, & outpost warp back to Pashhow... He arrives on his "mighty steed" chocobo & claims it no problem (no other campers around). I get back to Pashhow & begin heading back to the NM area. Before I even reach him & the NM, he kills it & I see the tortoise shield drop! XD

I owe you big time Jezter!!! ^^

This NM and his pretty shield was on my list. 1/6 and I'm the owner of a Tortoise Shield. I'm going to level RDM when my list is compete or at least 2 of the 3. Next up Vilma Ring.

Some things to note the spawn is 21hrs. After camping for 6 days, he always spawned after 21hr instead of 24. I do believe he's around level 40, I get no xp from killing him at 64.

camped, claimed and dropped.
# Sep 21 2005 at 6:49 PM Rating: Decent
camped for about 5 days after the recent tuesday maitenance, each time i saw it spawn, it was on the top "half" of the loop, twice at the north threeway(a little east of the center, near the flat rock in the ground) , and once at the north west part of the loop(right around the bend from the north threeway). i can attest that this NM spawns EARLY alot, i'm not sure if it was bad math or what, but i thought i saw it spawn an hour early, but usually it spawns right at or near the 21 hour mark.

it seems to be a paladin job class, uses cure 3 when at 1/4th health, easily slept by a 58 BLM(me) and soloable by same (although i used my npc which had healer job, and had i 2/3 mana) and does not have placeholders.

ps. my npc gained a level on it to.

Killed him earlier today on the Diabolos server. I was on my way to Beadeaux to help an LS mate with her coffer key. Saw him take out 2 level 30ish's that were trying to fight him with relative ease. They HP'd and I claimed him. I know it sounds evil, but they were level 30, a few cures from me wasn't going to save them. Anyhow, he didn't do much to me. I was a 60blm/30rdm. He hit me about 1/4 or 1/5 time for small amounts of damage. I didn't even cast on him, I just hacked away with my Triple Dagger with En-blizzard and Ice Spikes on. Had to drain twice from all his TP moves. Once he hit Invincible, I hit him with Sleep II and buffed up a bit, and debuffed him. Then, after a bit, I woke him up and finished him off. He dropped ~70 gil and the shield. Unfortunately, I'm from Bastok, so I'll almost never get the extra effect on the shield. All-in-all, it was a nice little bonus that made me happy. ^_^

Oh, almost forgot: I didn't get any experience from this guy, so I would put him in the level range of the low 40s, maybe in the upper 30s.

Yeah, I killed it at about 4pm. I'm in Australia, so work it out to your time lol.
44Thf/19Rng if anyone's interested and my tip of the day for him; Bloody bolts still work when he uses Invincible.
Good Luck ^^

Gun.

EDIT;

Jesus Christ! I just looked at some of the other posts here and S-E must have made him easier or something. I honestly never looked like dying when I killed him, not once. I wasted perfect dodge when he invincibled as I thought I'd need it but, no. I used exactly 40 bloody bolts and a copper quadav linked at the start of the fight. I had no sleep bolts so I just Cycloned three times over the course of the fight. I was hitting for about 17-20 with my marauders knife and he hit me for about 38-60 when he didn't miss. I'm not sure if his strength ever differs like normal mobs, i.e; 3 crawlers together but one's EP low defense and the other two are EP straight, but I can't think of any other reason that people would recommend being lvl 60+ for him. Well, if anything I wrote has helped anyone, I'll be happy, if not... Sorry about that :P
Oh yeah, got the drop. Worth 2,500gil to NPC...

I soloed it as a 50 THF/NIN, Fight took like 10 minutes.
It used invincible about half way through, but it could barely hit me. When it is nearly dead it'll start spamming cure IIIs. It has a very high defense, Viper Bite helped alot.
In the end I had about 150 HP left, I got the drop.
/sigh

Finally saw him pop today, got the claim. No drop. ><

I beat him as a 59 DRG/RDM. It wasn't too close but I wouldnt want to try it much lower. Never got into Healing Breath range though.
Easy method for mages
# Sep 05 2005 at 6:04 PM Rating: Decent
This mob is a Pld-class Quadav: very high Def, moderately weak attack, lots of Mp.

The "lots of Mp" might seem like bad news, because it can cast Cures and such, but it's actually its greatest weakness if you wield a Lilith's Rod ( http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?fitem=1852 ). The Mp drain lets you heal yourself, cast Stoneskin, Sleep adds, etc. all day long.

Although the mob can Cure itself with all that Mp, it rarely does so; it'll usually only cast a single Cure III very late into the battle (after it's used its 2-hour), and otherwise sticks to casting Banish, Protect, and Shell -line spells (sometimes on nearby Quads, rather than buff itself).

I killed it a few times as a 67 Whm/Blm, and it was laughably easy thanks to the Rod. Aspir and Drain once per minute were handy, too. It didn't hit me very hard, or often, but then again that's at level 67 so take it with a grain of salt. I think a level 50 Whm/Blm could *probably* take it (with some difficulty if club skill isn't capped) using the following:
Lilith's Rod
Aspir
Drain
Stoneskin
- Spikes (Ice Spikes is probably best, but go with Flame Spikes if that's all you have)
Dia or Bio (take your pick; Bio costs more, but reduces damage eating away at Stoneskin, and thus is probably a better pick)
Silence
A few Blm nukes or DoTs

Physical attacks deal very little damage, but the mob doesn't have strong magical defenses; low-level Blm nukes should be enough to chop it down quickly, but otherwise just use the Spikes damage and DoT.

A Blm/Whm or Blm/Rdm could *probably* take it down just as easily by using Aspir, Drain, nuke, Sleep (no DoTs), heal, repeat... but without Stoneskin it'd be much harder. Rdm could also try this method relying on Aspir and Refresh only (no Mp drain from the Rod, since Rdm can't equip), since they also benefit from Phalanx's Def boost; Spikes + En- spells would also greatly help damage, since they bypass the mobs high Def.
no drop

was helping friends with rank 5 mission and ran into him, never heard of it before. I was 63 drg/war and killed him with about 3/4 my left. So over 60 seems safe to fight him. Oh and didn't drop a thing.

I would love to have this shield, but some things just don't add up. Thought maybe some of you could explain it to me.

It is a level 30 shield that is rare/ex.

It drops from a mob that you have to be level 60ish+ to actually defeat.

It takes 21 hrs to respawn..and isn't even a guaranteed drop.

So, with all of this in mind, how is someone that could actually use this shield supposed to get it?

I could camp it to find ToD and fight it, but I would just die. I could ask LS members to help, but gonna be very difficult to organize around a 21 hr pop. Not to mention having to do it multiple times if claim isn't acquired or fail to get drop. I could level up and solo it, but by then I won't need/want the item anymore.

Please can somebody help make sense of this system for me.

Say someone is (Just a random job here) 75 SAM... And now he wants to do BLM.

The 75 SAM can find the ToD, Kill the NM, And use the shield at the lvl he would need it. Nobody said you had to get the shield with the job you will use it as.

That pretty much sums it up. These are technically luxury items. People leveled before without it, overwhelming amount still do, and will never have to use this to do good. It's kind of a reward for those who put the time to level a job high enough to kill it so they can use it for a different job they may want to level. Very useful for any mage thats listed on it.
Some info on it...

First off, spawn time (as reported by several others) is 21hrs from ToD. Give or take 20min. Out of 6 spawns that I've gotten em, I've personally only seen it go up to 15min over, but who knows.

Next, the spawn location. It can spawn ANYWHERE in K-10. So widescan is very helpful due to not being able to easily access the other side of that clump of land.

Placeholders. There are none, this thing will spawn whether you like it or not. So be there when you need to. My first kill, I was killing the 1 veteran that repeatedly spawns every 5 min (I track the exact one due to its location on wide scan). Eventually, Bo'Who spawns but so does the Veteran. Next kill I didn't kill anything, and left that 1 veteran on scan tracked while I went AFK. When I came back, luckily, Bo'Who had already spawned right in front of me and the Veteran was still being tracked. Got the drop, 1/2 as 62THF. So from then on I didn't kill any mobs while camping it (playing on my friends account getting the shield for em) nor were any killed during that time I was camping. RDM/RNG 1/3 on drop.

Recommended levels to solo. As 62THF/RNG, Bo'Who was hitting for about 30-60ish. His defense is really high. I was hitting for 10-17 around with a DS kukri +1. DE was hitting for around 170. It would have been iffy on soloing if it wasn't for bloody bolts. Other than his high dmg hits to my THF, was extremely easy and missed a lot (but as a THF, those hits that did connect weren't to look too lowly of considering the duration of the fight). As my friends 68RDM/RNG, it was extremely easy. Bo'Who was hitting for about 10-20dmg, so that is no problem whatsoever. Just a long fight kind of. So 60+ shouldn't have much trouble at all, just might need to take some precautions at the lower end of that. Mob uses Invincible at around halfway through. So if you got spells to cast, feel free to nuke all you want.
