I just camped him for 15-20 min and got the drop. this is probably the easiest NM in the game. All you have to do is run up and down the river from the southernmost rock wall to the first brige and kill pugils and goblin fishers and he spawns in (I-10)-(I-11) everytime.
could i take it?

this week i have only killed 2 NM`s and i am a 71 whm...think i could take this one?
SWAMFISK!!!!!!!!!

Well this little fish gave me one hell of a headache. I camped it for 3 hours and could never find it. But I did kill a Big Mouth Billy. I was running up an down the river killing Pugls and Goblin Fishers with my lvl 21 RDM. A friend from my linkshell helped me camp it after the first 2 and a half hours. Which made say "Hey since u r here i am gonna go get my lvl 10 BLM." And sure enough as soon as i step 1 foot into m mog house i get a message saying "ITS HERE RUUUUN" so i run and my friend kills it wen i step into Ronfaure so i got lucky. But then sure enough 2 days later im walking through Ronfaure and it spawns on top of me. My luck i suppose :(

freakish luck

I was in a PT on 2/19 and noticed a guy using the gelong staff while healing. I asked where he got it and he told me about Swamfisk. The next day I looked him up here, read the posts and decided I would camp him, despite some of the long camp times. So I rented a choco out of jeuno and traveled to east ronfaure, dismounted my choco at the bridge, and headed south. I killed the first pug I saw and continued south. The next pug I saw was Swamfisk himself. Killed him in like 1 minute and got my staff - no camp time. I had really hoped for the night to unfold exactly as it did but was not counting on it at all. What freakish luck!
Success!

Finaly with the help fo a blackmage friend I got the staff. We split the spawn zone half and half, so make it easier. We were running up and down kiling pugs for about 2 hours, then he says he must go, I tell him that is fine, while you run to sandy can you check along the way. I go down the the first waterfall form the small bridge and fight a pug when I notice this big one next to it. It's Swamfisk! And not a soul in sight, I easily kill him in one hit with a lvl 21, 300 TP raging axe, and obtain my Gelong Staff. In the end, this NM is definately worth camping, jut got to be patient.

river hoping to find him. I run up and down for about 5 times killing stuff and I see him...CLAIMED! To a lvl 14 monk, I was hoping he would die but no such luck, he kills it, and starts healing AND DOENS'T EVEN USE THE STAFF. So my search continues for the elusive Swamfisk.

First NM Kill!
# Feb 05 2006 at 8:39 AM Rating: Decent
I am fairly new to the game. Have only been playing for maybe a week and a half. Last night I got this little bugger. I was a lvl 16 Whm, Elvaan that just got out of pt and decided to head back to Sandy to unload my inventory, when I decided well while I'm waiting for a pt might as well try it out. Of course I have been reading this tread lately. And the bugger popped up just where people were say where he was. For me it happened sout of the last waterfall, right under the log. I might go there again to see if it spawns neer that place again. Well thanks for the info on this thread!
Gob. Fishers / Pugils
# Jan 28 2006 at 11:01 AM Rating: Decent
My brother and I camped this guy for a little while, and we both got in a kill.

I think one of the problems people might be having is that the Goblin Fishers in that area seem to use the same "spawn space" as the Pugils... so unless you're killing all the Goblins Fishers AND all the Pugils along the southern portion of the river, you may not get Swamfisk to spawn. Using this theory (and sticking to ONLY the southern portion of the river, going north and south up to the fork) we were able to claim him twice in a fairly short amount of time, and now both of us have a Gelong staff!

If it is of any help to others, both times he spawned for us he spawned in the very southernmost spawn point, right at the southern point of the river, close to where the water flows into the rock face.

I've been trying to get that Swamfisk to spawn for the past 4½ hours, and guess what, it just won't appear!! I don't know what the problem is but I just can't get it there. It really pisses me off so to say... I've been killing ordinary pugils for so long that they'll come out of my ears soon.

I was searching for this thinking it would be a good addition to my PLD12/WAR6 with a Clipeus. I found this fish in 30minutes and unloaded 300% TP Fast Blade as PLD12. i managed to build another 100% and by that time the WS killed him. Good luck to everyone else out there.

So I (20BST/10WHM) come out of the "exit only" zone from King Ranperre's Tomb into East Ronfaure and start heading back to town when I see this Lvl 10 newb RDM fighting Swamfisk. He didn't look like he was going to make it so I rested up while he fought. I intended to just let him get killed and take the NM for myself but I felt sorry for the newb. How was he to know NM are hard. So I let him get down to almost nothing and cast cure on him. As I did this he disengaged Swamfisk and I finished him off and got the Gelong Staff which never leaves my inventory. It was a win-win situation. I saved a newb from certain death and I got the drop.

Going to let him die. What kind of attitude is that. And the title to the post. Why do so many people on this game have such attitudes. I have my theories, but shall remain silent.
RE: My story is better than yours.
# Apr 02 2006 at 12:41 PM Rating: Decent
It's the attitude of "this is a NM, either I let this guy die or I help him and get to sit here for 2 more hours".

Hmm.. yes.. personal gain is ALWAYS best. ***** everyone else. You don't need anyone! Do what you want, when you want! To heck with what others think and who you step on to get where you are! Oh dear.. little problem huh? No one gets anything out of helping you, so you have to solo your AF, missions, avatars. Oh noes! You died! Rez3 plz! But the WHM exping in the pt next to you only cares about their exp.. a shame.. time to go visit your old friend the Home Point.

Yup. Big man now.. taking a lvl 10 Fish with 100% drop rate off a newb.
/sarcasm off

Yet.. I let someone die to VE once. Wait.. wait.. hear me out. It's not what you think. ^.~

I was camping VE with a friend of mine, trying to get him his Empress Pin. Place was crawling with people camping. Sure it's rare/ex, but people who had Emperor hairpins wanted to sell them.. they were going for about 10 mil at the time (around December).

Suddenly, there's a shout for help and a crowd of people go rushing over. Emp spawned and a lvl 30-something DRK had claimed it. He was alone and getting his rear handed to him. None of the bystanders helped. A 73SMN/WHM stood there.. waiting for him to die. By the time I got to him, I had a choice.. risk casting a cure and it taking too long and him dying before it went off, or waiting for him to die and claim it.

Gritted my teeth.. waited.. and prayed. The DRK dropped, I cast Dia and got claim. I stood there a second.. torn. My friend had been camping this for a few days and was 0/6 on Emp. Give him this chance alone at it? Or let the gutsy DRK have a shot too?

I cast Raise on the DRK, invited him to PT and instructed him to stand away from the fight. We'd decided that since the DRK had gotten claim, he was allowed a chance at the pin, but because my friend and I had reclaimed and were fighting it, my friend would also get a chance. Open lot. Emp died, pin dropped, the DRK lotted highest.

I know my friend was upset at having lost the lot. Aloud he cursed and laughed at his luck, but in game, he smiled, bowed and congratulated the DRK, and we resumed camping.

He gave up the next pin that dropped to a friend who was helping us camp, who also needed it. The friend who needed it had camped VE before and gotten drop. He'd given up an Emperor's Hairpin to the person helping HIM camp.. who also needed it.. and an Empress Hairpin to me.

And so we go back to camping. We cure fellow campers, cheer them on when they get claim and drop, and sigh with them and comfort when they wind up empty-handed.

It's a game. It's a community. It's both. You don't NEED this gear to make it to 75, but it can help. But you don't NEED it. Being the best isn't about the best gear. It's about good gear and GREAT skills. It's not worth getting angry over (RMT campers getting claim or people monopolizing/cheating is an exception.. I believe everyone should get a fair chance).

Relax.. enjoy yourself. Lend a hand when no one else will, and you might just find someone helping you out when you need it.

And for the love of Moogle Pie.. remember you were a newb once too! Have some @^#%ing compassion!

found this NM after about 2 hours of running up and down the river. was 22WHM/9BLM (gimpy subjob, i know). found him way at the southern end of the river, as so many others have from what i understand. killed him fairly quickly and only took maybe 8 damage the entire fight. got the gelong staff which i entend to use as soon as i get my BLM up another level. GL to all who are goint to fight this NM.

I just spent 3 hours camping this NM, almost wanted to shoot myself. (>< no patience).

Did it as 13blm, took about 2 minutes.

Had to 2hr, and use a potion. But it was worth it :D

after today's maintenance i wanted to try my luck on this guy... took me 2 whole hours of running up and down the river until i found him near the most southern waterfall. oh well, i guess it was worth the work, +4 hp recovery can be really helpful for farming with over 1k HP ^.^ garlic cracker + gelong staff <3
Obtains a Gelong Staff.

most posts say around I-10 ~ I-11

so I ran around that area killing nothing but the pugils and boom about an hour into it he spawns

Swamfisk has about 350+ hp so if you're low lvl, be ready for a fight.

and it does seem to be a 100% since it dropped on first kill hurray for 1/1 :D
Boo!

I just camped this for 2 1/2 hours on Asura today and no spawn. For an NM that is intended to be the fun/easy version this is a big waste of time. You're better off to waste time on a real NM that will actually drop something more useful. Sure it's 100% drop but the spawn on this one was really, super obnoxious.

I camped Pilgrim's Wand and only took about an hour and was totally worth it. This one... not so much.
