Contents [hide]

General Information

  • Can only be spawned by a Hume with a large amount of Fomor hate. If the player has enough Fomor hate, clicking on the Stale Draft will produce the message, "Your common sense tells you to leave as quickly as possible".

  • Can be respawned again fifteen minutes after it was last defeated or despawned. However, in order to do so, Fomor hate must be acquired again, or another Hume with hate must spawn Balor, as Fomor hate is reset for the player that last spawns him.

Balor Special Attacks

  • Foxfire - Frontal cone AoE physical damage with additional Stun effect.

  • Barbed Crescent - Single target physical damage with additional Accuracy down effect.

  • Aegis Schism - Single target Defense down effect.

  • Netherspikes - Frontal cone AoE physical damage with additional Bind effect.

  • Dancing Chains - AoE Drown effect (Circle of effect originates from mob).

  • Carnal Nightmare - Aoe TP removal effect (Circle of effect originates from mob).

  • Eagle Eye Shot - Strong single target ranged attack. Denoted by the characteristic mob two-hour animation.

Historical Information

In Irish mythology, Balor was the king of the demi-god race known as Fomor. He possessed a single eye that was capable of killing anyone that he looked upon, opting to keep it closed unless in battle.

Tanking Tips

Tanked this NM 6 times today on NIN. As long as you have a dedicated mage curing you, he's actually easier than just a normal fomor samurai.

Here's a few things that I learned that made my job tanking easier:

-He likes to double attack follow by a ranged attack. That's a perfect time to start casting Ichi since his ranged attack won't interrupt your casting regardless of whether or not it hits you.

-He will 2 hr between 30-60% hp (did this range every single time for us). Shadows absorb EES.

-Pay attention to the animations surrounding him to see when EES goes off because all it will say in chat log is that a shadow absorbs the dmg and nothing about EES... once it goes off you're in for an easy (easier) fight.

-Out of the 6 times I tanked him I got hit with EES once. He wiped all 3 shadows with a TP move (foxfire I think) and then EES'ed me. Hit me for 680 damage and I had 900+ life. The nice thing about taking this sort of damage is that it causes your hate to decrease so he'll go after someone else, easily allowing mages to heal you and you to restore hate shortly after.

-Blade: Retsu would paralyze him 2-3 times per usage. Sometimes it wouldn't at all.

-I landed Hojo 5/6 times I fought him, but I used it frequently to help me hold hate and it would take several times for it to land. When it does land his attack rate is noticeably lower and I Ni > Ni tanked him without much trouble.

-Use heavy melee jobs as opposed to those that more or less feed the mob TP and you'll decrease the chance of having a TP move wipe your shadows and eating an EES.

-Having a back up tank is a good idea because there's times where he'll quickly wipe all your shadows and you'll be waiting on 15 second recasts. Although these times are not all that frequent, it still made me nervous knowing EES could come at any point.

-Have your mages erase the defense down effect that comes with the tp move Aegis Schism. In fact, have your mages erase it every time any fomor puts it on you... it's an easy way to avoid damage.

-Towards the end of the 6 fights I just started putting defender up to decrease any damage I took. The last fight I took 372 damage total and was the only person to be damaged.

NIN&RDM Trio Information
# Jul 13 2007 at 9:12 PM Rating: Decent
This can be trio'd with skilled players and an absence of bad luck.
Caution though, these fomors are highly resistant to enfeebles,
Ninjutsu had a 50% or less stick rate, and a elvaan RDM with +28
MND landed 1/9 slows, and 1/5 paralyzes.
Setup was Hume NIN/WARx2 Elvaan RDM.
RDM using +18MND gear and Goblin Mushpot(+10MND)
This NM can tear this party apart, beware, it just takes a double
attack, fox fire, and then 2h and one NIN will go down. We did two
pops, first one went almost without a hitch, we wiped on 2nd pop.
He would constantly catch NINs with timers down. He has very good
accuraccy, and rarely misses ranged attacks. He also has double attack.

I did another party today with NINx3 and RDM and it went much smoother.
There were very little close calls, with all NINs sharing hate. We went
1/4 for swift belts, I got mine.

Got my belt Monday! We started with 9 people. 3 NINs, 2 THFs, WHM, SMN, WAR, abd BRD. As people used their Codex's, people started to drop. Guess which people? People who already went! What a surprise there! Anyway, BRD goes first, we had 7 Humes, 1 Mithra, and 1 Elvaan. BRD gets drop on first kill after I lose a lot to go first because we were the only with who had hate upon getting there. Watch the people drop as we went along...

Kill 1 Hume BRD Killed with 9
Drop

Kill 2 Mithra THF Killed with 8
No drop

Kill 3 Elvaan NIN Killed with 8
No drop

Kill 4 Hume THF Killed with 8
Drop

Kill 5 Hume WHM Killed with 8
No drop

Kill 6 Hume WAR Killed with 7
No drop

Kill 7 Hume NIN (ME!) Killed with 7
DORP!

Kill 8 Hume NIN Killed with 6
No drop

Kill 9 Hume SMN Killed with 5
No drop

The final kill was done with a party of 2 NINs, WAR, SMN, BRD. BRD washaving connection problems but kept coming back to her credit. WHM, THF, NIN, THF all either "fell asleep" or just went afk and never came back.

I would have felt comfortable fighting this thing with 3 people. NIN, NIN, mage because when we did it with 5, I don't think a single heal was thrown. The Hume version is very easy. NIN, NIN, THF, Mage would be a perfect party to go do this with. SMN main heal was more than enough for us and the SMN even used offensive BP's during the fight. Good luck on a crappy drop rate to all!

This makes me sad. A real Balor is a massive demon said to crush humans and angels alike. Massively powerful, uncommon, but not one-of-a-kind. It would take 2 to take out a sky God :D

You're a ******* moron. Balor wasn't a demon. Stop watching Lord of the Rings. Put down your D&D Player's Handbood. And pick up a history book.
Balor /laugh

Balor is a joke guys, if your tank doesn't get dropped with Eagle eye shot, 3 people could take him down no prob, of course NIN onry.

when you can show me a pic of you trioing it with a nin tank then you can laugh but for now why not give gratitude to people who have done it
and stop laughing at something you haven't done yourself
3 man balor ftw

Smn 50 Heimdall
Thf 50 Jayjay
Me(bst) and 2 friends just triod balor tonight. Wasn't too bad of a fight, we got the belt to drop. It was a sweet run, overall it was a great rush fighting something that is supposed to require 6-8+ people. Here are 2 pics we managed to take.

Ya, and what about his spell like abilities? I mean, who here can handle the dominate person and teleportation, let alone the firestorm? Death throws should also take care of those messy people with enough Hp to survive him and his natural Blazespike effect!
And it sure as hell is going to take an alliance depending on his choice of minions for the day. His whip will rip up those Whm who dare to heal thier victims faster than they can blink. Seeing as he also may use infinite Dispel and Erase, byebye buffs and enfeebles.

Oh and according to 3.5 rules, its only a +1 Vorpal Sword

DnD statistics only, so happy hunting!

Rate Up Daeren!

Really? Damn. I havent gotten any of the 3.5 books yet, prefer 3.0. Much less complicated IMO.

But back on topic, I'm pretty sure this is the Elvaan fomor that you fight for the swift belt. The other races have the other fomors that drop the swift belt.
Hmmm

Balors where orrigionally the Guardians of the Gate of Chaos, which, in a sence, fits into this a little bit...

Check the link in my sig, but briefly, in Celtic mythology, Balor was the king of the Fomorians^^
