I was testing /nin on my blu 25 after not having done much on blu for several months (blm main) when I saw one of these at G-9. I checked it and found it to be T to me, I hadn't looked on here at all the stories about people my level have such a tough time or I'd have left it alone lol. I started with Sprout Smack and Wild Oats then moved to Bludgeon and by the time it took down my shadows and my Metallic Body wore off I had it down past the 50% mark. It got me down to about 100/419 hp when I k/od it (140xp). I took down another that rated EM a few min later, both used Pinecone Bomb on me but I didn't learn it, but I figure I'm too low to learn the spell anyway. A third one also a EM to me dropped a crystal, no other drops though.

to me it seems for fighting these solo it's much better with melee class than mage class, mostly due to mages' low hp and defense stats. i was able to solo these at level 30 monk, and my favorite part was after i killed one, i'd sit and heal, and around the same time my hp was full the next tree was spawning, so i didn't have to wander around looking for more trees ^^. mage classes can take them around the same level, it just may be a little more difficult, depending on your equipment setup and your hp/mp. oh, and just for the record...fear the saplings >.<
Having a real issue with these as my 30 BLU. Not an issue with killing them, since they're all Easy Prey or Decent Challenge, but an issue with learning Pinecone Bomb.
They >use< the attack all the time...it just never seems to hit. 0/12 with learning it so far, and not a single Bomb has hit. The accuracy seems to be absolutely horrid, and it seems as though the attack must hit something for BLU to learn the spell. Good luck to everyone else trying to learn the spell!
Edit: OK, so I just learned on a miss, which means the ability does not actually have to hit for a BLU to learn it. It also completely nullifies any point that this post once had, so....
Apologies if this theory a) has already been mentioned, or b) is entirely incorrect.
But, as for spawn points, it seems to me to be pretty darn simple: Walking Trees spawn wherever there are Logging Points.
Now, of course, that's all fine and dandy, as long as you know where the logging points are. They are bunched together in four separate groups around Jugner: the exact locations can be found here: http://www.hi-ho.ne.jp/gulif/ziq_bassaieng.html#Jugner
I can confirm that they definitely spawn in the north-east and south-west cluster. I'm pretty darn sure about the south-east area, and I'm not entirely sure about the north-west area.
Hope this helps. And for the record, I'm a RDM35/BLM17, and if I play my cards right, I can get through a fight with little to no damage taken, although my MP takes quite a hit.
Spawn: I/J - 6/7 G/F - 8/9 about every 4-6 minutes
Drop Estimates (with treasure hunter): 39% nothing 25% dryad root 20% mistletoe 15% puffball 01% oak log (0/30 or so)
Attacks: fast attacks with heavy hits. 60-70% miss rare critical hits, but have landed 2 criticals in a row more often than I care to recall.
Special Attacks: entangle (very rare) - damage-100%, binds drill branch (rare) - damage+25%, blinds pinecone bomb (common) - (hasn't hit yet) leafstorm (common) - damage+50% I assume the bomb and leafstorm are AoE, entangle may be as well.
Notes: Definitely tougher than they rate, even if it's 'Easy -/-' approach with caution. Wandering Saplings will link with it but they must be very close. Absolutely no threat as level 40 thf; 2-3 in a row are possible as a thf type melee or better. Seems to take critical hits less often than average.
0/5 steal attempts - this would be higher but I keep forgetting to do it >.< regardless I'm pretty sure I read somewhere they don't have anything to steal, but I'll keep trying till I have at least 20 attempts.
I am still afaird of these, pick them up on wide scan all the time, but last time i tryed at lvl 30 warrior, full armor and subjob, it ripped threw me and i had to have a lvl 55 pld save me :(
I've fighting these since I was level 25 as a mnk/thf (used 2-hr hoping to get mistletoe for the Unexpected Treasure quest) and fairly consistently received mistletoe drops as long as they con'ed descent challenge or equal match. These added a fairly nice bit of income on top of my logging trips. However, all my easy prey and twtbw kills have dropped just the occasional puffball and dryad root at best. Has anyone else noticed the same with this mob or with any other mobs for that matter? It'd be nice to put together a player level vs. treasure drop list for any mobs where that seems to play a factor.
I've taken Easy Preys as a level 30 RDM/WHM and a Decent Challenge as level 32. Don't let the easy prey check fool you though...with my WHM sub I always have to make sure I have my Divine Seal + Cure II/Cure III ready for use just in case they decide to critical hit me a few times in a row. I have to start with Blaze Spikes and Enfire and then throw out all my enfeeble spells (Bio/Slow/Paralyze/Gravity) and I still will come out with no mp and about 1/2 - 1/3 hp if I'm lucky.
rng45/nin22, killed these while leveling my marksmanship skills last night. not sure if this is accurate, but it seemed that they only spawned one at a time. they r sorta rare mobs, like rams in the plat. i was farmin tigers alot so i was contstantly spammin widescan, i never noticed more than 1 at a time. also, they were always in the SW portion of the map, and occasionally just south of the outpost. im pretty sure i was the only one in the area for 2-3 hours and i only saw 10 of them. it seemed one would spawn about 5 minutes after i killed the last, and it was in the same area too. anyways---dropped 2 mistletoes, 2 dryad roots, and 4 puffballs. good farming.
just a follow up---they spawn all over the map. if u r usin widescan, than u could theoretically break the map into about 7 sectors. 3 on bottom, 2 on top, and the 2 sides of map, whereas the middle of map is connected to all. NEVER did i see 2 walking trees in the same sector at any given time. only 1 per sector. however, i saw others in other sectors of the map using widescan, but i had to hike a considerable distance. just wanted to clarify.
i have killed this thing about 20 times in the past 2 weeks and goten a misteltoe every time i havnt seen any of the otehr item that it is sapose to drope not that i am compalaning couse i sold mistletoe for 4.5 to 5k every time and its not that tough i solo it with my lvl 30 monk no prob.
