It is a ghost AND a NM. Undead are stronger than normal monsters and NM are more powerfull too. That level on top is what level the mob is to show exp. NOT the recommended level to fight it.

i am usally super poor but when my friend told me about this drop and how easy it was i had to go check it out. So far i killed it 4 times and all 4 times i got the drop, the funny thing is that i went as ninja/warrior. Well what i did was stay on one corner of the tomb and i had my fingers on F8, which targets nearest monster, then once i saw the name pop i just spamed my Provoke micro i had and got it with np. I hope this helps you guys.

I am a veteran camper of spook, hehe. My camp record on this guy is 42/152. I wanted to tell you all my way just because I think the whole world should know! ^^.
My way of speed voking is very simple when you think about it. Go into your job abilities menu, select provoke (or w/e pulling spell/ability you have^^) and spam it. It may sometimes target something else. Bummer :'( Just live with it and remember this - Spook will be there tommorrow night! ^^;;
P.S. Spooks spawn time is 20:00 - 20:10 , 23:30 - 1:30 , 3:10 - 4:00

Would a lvl 16 blm be able to hunt this thing?
I've been hunting the spook for about 4 RL days now. It takes some luck and some strategy, but I've gotten 4 mantles in that period of time.
On the Asura server, they go for 22-27k.
I'm a lvl. 19 RDM and I kill him with 150-200 hp still remaining. The secret is keeping protect, shell, and aquaveil up and spamming cure2 on him.
It is heavily camped, so work out a strategy and stick with it.

Finally got my mantle after camping it three days, i was able to actually voke it only 7 times though. No, i didn't sleep during that time and i pretty much got lucky with the last Voke. Some high level whm / pal tried to train me with an alt was kind of interesting.
Keep working on it those of you who aren't there for the money, you will get it eventually, just have to be patient. I had a friend (Blackmage) with me and i was level 19 warrior at the time i would just pull trains of monsters for him to AoE so we could farm while killing spook. (or trying to).

I just camped this 1 full day and i got 10 mantles, killed crypt 5 times and grule 4 times and got no drops from them oh well 10 manles at 28k each + 2 pair of battle gloves from the chest and a few stacks of bat wings, Im happy
There are some insane campers here that are Japanese on Seraph. This one thf would voke the thing before I even saw it lol. Anyway I'm two for six on drops(when I actually get a hold of the thing). Only thing that bothers me is that the really high level players come here when they could probably hunt something better with a more rewarding drop. Well, whatever..

So thats why there were always people camping this thing, i was only level 10 and hoping to get the revival tree root for the 1st paladin quest and was curious bout everyone hanging around, and how they would sob or something after killing it and how whole teams would hunt it...sheesh...stupid mantle (well not really, i wouldnt mind one)...and to think all i wanted was the tree root!
Maybe campers should ask why others are hanging around, i was severely annoyed about not getting a chance to complete a quest and waiting 3 days because of greedy playes regardless of my level. Its only an inventory item, if offered it i wouldve gladly taken the tree root and left.

seems like you are not on the ramuh server! When I camp him, there will always come some low lvl pople who are seeking the root. I always ask the other people if they need the root, because if they don't, I'll just trew it away.
you said you where lvl 10... and that's too low to kill spook anyways. The people who camped saved you!
note: The root can be bought on AH for 200 gil, If you need the root, don't bother camp spook to get it. It's alot more easier to get it at AH.

The root drops off most ghost type creatures. No point in killing the spook spawn if all you want is the root lol.
Would a 30thf have much trouble with this mob? I don't really wanna buy all my armor for it again so im just wondering

a THF22 could even kill this one(but would maybe have a tough fight...). You should be 100% able to kill this one.(remember to have WAR sub, you need the voke)

ok, listen... I'm the one and only (yeah, right) spook veteran. I've hunted spook since I was Lv25. It's been my source of my money ever since, even though now it is really over camped deluxe!(I had some luck today, some bad luck too! was some Lv75 people hunting it, some was like only 35, but they was Rank10, so they had a better job for real and was extremly fast!)
ok, here is why all people like to hunt spook: Spook drops "Travelers Mantle" worth 21-23k at the ramuh server 5/20/04
to start of, I'll tell you all the spawn times (i know some have allready posted it, but I'll just tell you all it again then)
First spawn: 20:00-21:00 ---- usually spawn right after 20:00
Second spawn: 23:30-01:00 ---- usually spawns a bit after 00:00
Third spawn: 02:30-04:00 ---- this only spawns if the second spook spawns before 00:00
I wish I could tell you all the drop rate so far in my history at camping him, but I haven't wrote down anything... so I'm clueless!

I can garantee, it's impossible to provoke at the speed that's seen on my screen when the japanese people use provoke! Before I have even managed to target it (F8), then it's allready claimed!
When I'm at King Ransperre's Tomb I hunt Spook, Goblin Gruel and Crypt Ghost. They are all easy ones (goblin gruel and crypt ghost can you solo at lvl 30 i think). I also farm bat wings when I'm there... it may just be 1,6k-2k per stack, but I always end up with many stacks!
for the THFs(also to the others of course!):
It's good to farm those "Cotton Cloth" spook and Crypt Ghost drops. When you use "steal" on spook or crypt ghost, you usually steal "Cotton Cloth".
"Cotton CLoth" sells for 10-12k in stack at the ramuh server 5/20/04.
one bad thing Square Enix recently did, was to make the drops more rare to the NMs (including spook). So now you get the "Travelers mantle" really rarly.
I hunted him today, I also said I had like 20 kills of him. I got 3 mantles. I'm happy! \(^-^;)/

Come back at 15 and still be prepared for a long fight and psosible death. He has some nasty spells to low lvl's. Truly though don't come back to kill him until 30 when you can take him down in a couple hit. A fast kill is the only way you can get 3 to spawn every night and a lot of players will get pissed if you take a long time to kill it. I just build up tp fora sturmwind and if i get him I can just one shot him

I agree, for the most part, about the issue of the NM mob theft, with those who say "whoever gets it, gets it" there is quite a bit of luck involved with NMs, and if you dont have much, you wont get many ^^
on the other hand... if you happen to see a player who is shadowing a non-NM mob, using prep abilities (like Sneak Attack, Boost, etc.) DO NOT TAKE IT.
THAT is most definitely rude and disrespectful. My char is a 21thf/10mnk right now, and it takes time to set up an attack on even a DC mob if I'm soloing. If I dont set up, I will probably die. And my job abilities don't recover as fast as provoke for example.. so please, on behalf of all the thieves in the game, don't steal our mobs once we've started doing stuff ^_^ The few times I've accidentally grabbed someone else's mob, I offered it back to the other player, and disengaged.
of course, if someone grabs something i just laid eyes on by archery, it's all theirs ^_~ odds are, they targeted it first in that case.
Overall, keep it friendly people. ^^ this is a game.

The reason why people complain is because there are many rude people out there who barge in on camps, and some of them being the greedy inconsiderate @#%^s that they are, the purposely will make a campers life hell so they can STEAL, that's rigth steal the campers NM. It is rude, and inconsiderate, I hope you avoid this type of behavior. If you don't you'll find yourself black listed, and next time when you're camping, the campers you stole from last time, might not be in as considerate and decide to make your life hell for a change.
Don't give me this bullsh*t about all players paying the same amount of money bla bla bla... just because you pay the same fee every month doesn't mean you have to be an A-Hole. And if you had played in EQ, with the same players and servers, you'd know that you're condoning bad etiquette, only difference is, in EQ you'd probly get challenged to a duel by a lot of high level players I know, and most likely you'd get killed
trust me, the people in EQ I played with where real hardasses with players like that and would have no problem sparing a minute of their camping time to kick their asses... BTW they were also high level too.

I have to agree with him. I've cmaped this thing many times, (still POed after 15 kills no mantle but thats what i get for no thf sub... damn u SE) and I have no problem if i don't voke it first and someone else grabs it. Its a contest of speed and its exciting. Whats fun tho is when its a friendly challenge and the guy will actually be nice a cool about it. It sucks when they use some stupid hacker language and say "lol u n00b u sux0r5" or something like that cuz #1 who are u a 10 yr old kid who thinks hes the **** and gets off on pissing people off and #2 its just a game
By the way i have a couple tips:
#1 look at my post below about a good macro.
#2 before the spook come hit ctrl-j and ur job abilities will pop up (ctrl-m for dia users) pick whichevers ur fastest and stand real close to the tomb and look directly at it, keeping the skeletons out of range, then spam ur enter key like its ur job. unfortunately the only success i have w/ this is against the orc warmachine NM's cuz they are the only spawn in a secluded area. Its too easy to accidently hit something else, altho w/. dia this might be better b/c cooldown time is less and u can just dia everything.
#3 Is what I do because I haven't had much success w/ the others. The spook tends to spawn 1st behind the tomb then next infront. I keep my mouse right over where it usualy spawns and just try to be fast as hell. Usually if there r 2 people there i can get one maybe but fairly unlikely 2 a night... the reason its usually one is i'll miss the first one b/c it wont spawn where i think its going to and i'll grab the second b/c it tends to spawn in the opposite place the 2cd time so im ready.

I dont know if this is true or not but I've heard from the last update that you have to be level 17 or lower to get the travelers mantle from spook I dont know if this is true or not so someone please tell what the heck is going on with this?

I've had great luck with this monster...he dropped mantle around 1/3 times with me. The great thing abaout the mantle is that it is not rare, meaning that i had like my whole inv full before i took these back to the AH and MH. I can out-voke many other players, except a girl named Windspirit. She's in my LS, and is very skilled.
and...dont complain. If you're at the point of complaining, go on with your life. It's just a game, and if you start spamming on how you didn't get the drop or spawn, then you know that you have no life. This means that you are so addicted to FFXI, that you can't really do anything else. might as well smoke it. Square made this game for you to ENJOY it, so do that. Don't complain, just have fun! \(^.^)/
If people out-voke you, then it spawns many other times. and yes, JP players may get annoying with their abundance of gil and uber characters, but you have no right to make fun of them! They are also very cool, and if you become skilled with the translator, such as I, you can make good friends. One of my JP friends gives me gil when it's needed.
So...have fun with this game, don't let it rule your life, and dont be racist. ^^

The great thing abaout the mantle is that it is not rare, meaning that i had like my whole inv full before i took these back to the AH and MH. I can out-voke many other players, except a girl named Windspirit. She's in my LS, and is very skilled.
and...dont complain. If you're at the point of complaining, go on with your life. It's just a game, and if you start spamming on how you didn't get the drop or spawn, then you know that you have no life. This means that you are so addicted to FFXI, that you can't really do anything else. might as well smoke it. Square made this game for you to ENJOY it, so do that. Don't complain, just have fun! \(^.^)/
If people out-voke you, then it spawns many other times. and yes, JP players may get annoying with their abundance of gil and uber characters, but you have no right to make fun of them! They are also very cool, and if you become skilled with the translator, such as I, you can make good friends. One of my JP friends gives me gil when it's needed.
So...have fun with this game, don't let it rule your life, and dont be racist. ^^
Ive killed the spook about 20times and i'm also a lvl 30thf mained and the best i get is cotton clothes, i don't even get lumni clothes or whatever. This is quite irritating surely it shouldn't take this long.
EDIT: I stand corrected, just logged off from killing for about 24th time and i got the mantle

I killed this last night, not once, but twice as a 21 WHM/BLM. Dropped nothing the first time, a luminicloth and an ice crystal the second.
There was a 50 THF/WAR also camping the spawn at the same time - so never fear - if you're quick and stay alert, you CAN beat out the 'vokers for this spawn. I kept Dia macro'ed and started continuously targeting the area at around 22:00 and kept my other hand ready on my macro keys. He spawned right on top of the tomb shortly before 23:00 and then again at around 2:00. Was a simple kill for a 21 WHM using Cures 1-3. It is totally possible to beat out 'vokers for this if you're ready and on the ball and prepared to hit that macro the moment the clock hits 22:00.
