Hydra in Wajaom Woodlands

Hydra's Spawn Location
Hydra's Spawn Location

  • Spawn time is 48-72 hours from the last ToD, or 12-36 hours after a server maintenance when the servers are offline. One hour interval between each window.

  • Immune to sleep and highly resistant to Slow and Elegy (Elemental Seal is strongly suggested in order to get these to land effectively).

  • Highly resistant to magical damage. Melee and Summoner avatars are recommended.

  • Has a draw-in effect.

  • After a certain number of critical hits are performed, one of the Hydra's heads will recede into its body, resulting in a reduction of its auto-regen effect. The two heads to either side of the center one can be removed, decreasing its regeneration effect significantly. After an unspecified amount of time, its heads will begin to regrow.

    • Additionally, whichever heads are out determines the possible special attacks it is capable of performing.

  • Grants Title: Hydra Headhunter

Hydra Special Attacks

  • Barofield: AoE Wind based magic damage with an additional Weight effect. (Circle of effect originates from Hydra's center head).

  • Serpentine Tail: Rear conal AoE physical damage.

    • Occurs only if hate is drawn on Hydra from behind it.

  • Trembling: AoE magic damage with an additional Dispel effect.

  • Pyric Bulwark: Self target Physical shield. (Effect cannot be dispelled)

    • Will only perform this ability if its left head is out.

  • Polar Blast: Frontal cone AoE Ice based magic damage with an additional Paralysis effect.

    • Will only perform this ability if its left head is out.

  • Polar Bulwark: Self target Magic shield. (Effect cannot be dispelled)

    • Will only perform this ability if its right head is out.

  • Pyric Blast: Frontal cone AoE Fire based magic damage with an additional Plague effect.

    • Will only perform this ability if its right head is out.

  • Nerve Gas: Frontal cone AoE magical damage with additional Curse and strong Poison effects.

    • Will only perform this ability if all three heads are out, and will only begin to do this once its hp drops below 25%.

Note: AoE abilities will hit -everyone- within range, regardless of whether you or your alliance have any hate on Hydra or not.

Historical Information

In Greek mythology, the Lernean Hydra was the offspring of the monster Echidna and the Titan Typhon, and whose siblings included Cerberus, the Chimaera, and the Nemean Lion. It was described as having up to nine venomous heads, and the ability to regenerate two heads if one is cut off which, when combined with the fact that one of its heads is immortal, allowed it to be a formidable opponent.

For his second labor given to him by the king Eurystheus, Heracles (Hercules) was sent to the creature's home in the swamps of Lerna to slay the Hydra. After realizing that simply slicing off its heads wouldn't bring about victory, Heracles had his assistant Iolaus cauterize each stump with a torch to prevent them from regrowing, and then buried the immortal head under a giant boulder, defeating it. He would later use the Hydra's deadly venom by dipping arrowheads into the creature's blood to further add to their deadliness.

My static is taking our first attempt at "The Susanoo Shuffle" FL Assault this evening, where the only enemy is a scaled down version of the NM hydra called Orochi. Can you individually target the different heads?
Hydra Strategy
# May 28 2007 at 7:18 PM Rating: Decent
Ok, did my first Hydra tonite and I though this was gonna be rather straightforward, WRONG! This NM has a few things that seem to hinder a successful victory.

1) At approx 25% he seems to re-pop heads quicker.

2) At approx 10% he re-pops them even quicker yet.

3) At approx 5% they reach a very aggravating re-pop time and he now spams the crap outta all his moves.

Now, the strategy is in job and alliance choice. Fist off, Criticals are what "slice off the heads." Sometimes it takes 1, sometimes 10. So the key is to bring a lot of 2handed melee with /THF. SAM does a fantastic job. If you have a couple DRK with Subduers, also a plus. Pretty much the entire alliance should be melee, save for 1 healer per party and 2 solid PLD/NIN. You should have a back-up alliance just for healing and tractoring. All of the /THF can just TAWS off the tanks for the first 50% of Hydra's HP.

Once you get to 25% make sure there is plenty of Sneak Attacks goin off, otherwise he begins to regen....fast. At 10% or lower bring in 2-3 WAR/NIN and have them 2 hour to keep the heads at bay while the rest of the melee unload 2 hours.

Hydra is a pain in the rear no doubt, but do-able. It's the last 10% that's the worst.

His TP moves as Follows:
Pyraic Blast>Plagues MP and TP loss
Physical Sheild>Enhanced Defense to Melee damage
Polar Blast>Paralyze
Trembling>Dispelga
Nerve Gas>Curse+Poison

Axe name change?
# Mar 02 2007 at 6:00 PM Rating: Decent
Sirius axe may have been renamed Hydra axe in a patch; hydra axe dropped from the Hydra today on Unicorn, also for BST lvl 75, also not rare or EX.

Note though these aren't 12 "Average" players. I'd assume most of their gear if much better than the normal Person's judging from their LS website.

Our LS, GuessWho, took this down on Fenrir today. Also drops Sirius Axe.

Neat-o title too :D

Ayus is correct in that the last 30% is hard. He respawns heads at 20%, 10%, and 5%. Spams Physical shield in the last 5% of life. Piercing weapons to almost zilch to it, as 75 cor i was hitting for 16 damage a shot. Accuracy did not seem to be a problem even without food. doesnt seem to be very evasive.

As most of the other posts indicate, this NM is no joke. Getting him from 100%-30% was pretty easy, nothing different.

However, when he hit below 20% he started respawning heads quicker, putting up physical shields more often and using his nerve gas and Gravity AoE like crazy. Shortly thereafter my alliance crumbled at 8% only to see him go right back to 100%.

He's like super tiamat.

Atariii is the only LS on Ifrit server i know of that has killed the Hydra, took them about 5-6 fight attempts before they got the strat down to beat him, and as far as i know they've only killed him once so far. no offence to Wisdom, but they didn't win this fight lol, they shoulda submitted a pic of everybody dead with the hydra standing over them lol.

My LS on Sylph took Hydra down a couple days ago. It took about 45 minutes to get from 100%-0%, and the last 12% was the biggest pain. He isn't as hard as he looks if you have the right set up.
bestienmeister
# Aug 24 2006 at 11:02 AM Rating: Decent
Me and my ls (BestienMeister - Cerberus) took an alliance of about 15-16 lvl 68-75 bsts and smns to fight this thing
after about an hour of hacking away at it, we almost dented its HP to about 98% b4 we had to give up
this thing isnt very nice
it uses physical and magical sheilds, draws players in 1 at a time and uses gravity TPs
dunno what it takes to beat it but its not easy
where is it from?

A JP ls killed it, i saw a fang in a bazaar.

Only because you don't have Chuck with you! His Job Trait "Roundhouse Kick Attacks to the Face" removes all monster beneficial effects.

Just remember... there is no such thing as global warming. Chuck got cold so he turned up the sun.
