Roc in Sauromugue Champaign

Roc's Spawn Location
Roc's Spawn Location

    • Alternate method: Using the Cavernous Maw at (J-10) in Sauromugue Champaign (S) will teleport you to the maw in the present, which is located on the cliff near Roc's spawn point. This will require traveling through Garlaige Citadel (S), but this can be done solo, as opposed to needing three other individuals for Garlaige Citadel in the present.

  • Respawn is 21-24 hours after its last ToD.

  • Has a draw-in effect.

  • Will "Rage" twenty minutes after it is first engaged unless it is killed first or all players with hate are killed or leave the zone and Roc's hp regenerates.

  • Grants title: Roc Star

Roc Special Attacks

  • Feather Barrier: Self target Evasion boost. (Effect can be dispelled).

  • Scratch: Single target physical attack with additional Blind effect.

  • Triple Attack: Single target three hit physical attack.

  • Gliding Spike: Single target physical damage with additional Knockback effect.

  • Stormwind: AoE Wind based magic damage (Circle of effect originates from mob).

  • Massacre Elegy: Single target Elegy effect.

  • Horde Lullaby: AoE Sleep effect. (Circle of effect originates from spell target).

  • Benediction: Massive hp recovery and removal of status ailments.

    • Denoted by the characteristic mob two-hour animation.

Historical Information

The Roc, in Persian mythology, was a gargantuan white feathered bird of prey, with the size and strength needed to be able to carry off and consume elephants. It has been linked at times to another mythological bird, the Persian Simurgh.

Our LS just took Roc down this morning. We hurried it and were disorganized (we got it better towards the end), and still kicked its ***. No good drops though :\ (It used Bene once during the fight, and I dont see anyone else sayiong this, but it is a BRD type mob (We got Foe lullaby all the freaking time ><) Anyway, congratulations to The Rune LS of Ramuh, (good job!) Fought him 2 days in a row now. Roc is a pansy. We killed him with 10 people both times. 1st time, party was between 60-73, and the 2nd time we had some 75s. There's 2 real hard parts 2 him - 1.) He has very high evasion, and 2.) he uses Benediction and recovers full HP near death. 1st day, he used Bene at 45-50% HP, this morning he used it around 25-30% HP which was really annoying. Both times recovered 100% HP. I can't really advise what to avoid since I never really got hate. I just kept my shadows up which absorbed most of his AoEs. He does a scream attack which is more-or-less Sleepga, putting everyone in the area to sleep. Just have a mage cast cure to wake you up. My best advice - have lots of ACC+ equipment (or RACC if you're RNG) and foods. That'll help things go faster. My sidewinder only hit once at the very begging of the fight, with 300% TP and Sharpshot active (No PPA Arrow). Also, fight it at the zone. When mages get hate, zone hate, have tank voke, then come back out. We did that for the second battle and things went a lot smoother. Killed him in roughly 15 minutes the first time, and 9-10 this morning. Anywho, got drop on 2nd kill. Healing Staff, no Damascus Ingot. Here's a couple screens from our fights (I have about 10-15 more pics if you care to see them. These are just my favs.):

My ls went through garlage to get the stone tablet for the selbina clay quest. When we made it outside Roc was there and we knew he was only a lvl 55. What we didnt know is that he is a HNM :( So with me a 43 Mnk a 46 Rdm a 50 War/Mnk a 55 War/Nin a 57 Whm and a 60 Blm we jumped this guy. The whm was the first to die and it didnt take long. The rest of us were rarely hitting it and doing almost no damage. The only noticeable damage was from the Blm but we made him zone after his second spell so he could come out and raise us (we didnt get the tablet yet) after we all died horribly. We are all going back after we are 65+ to get our revenge.

Funny story actually (happened no more than a few minutes ago)

Me and my LS went to go fight Roc.

We enter Garliage and in the first room behind the first banishing gate, we see Old Two-eyes. Wow a NM already! We fought it quickly, but alas there was no drop.

We take a right and Skewer Sam was right there in our faces. We kill him, but no drop.

We make it out and Roc is sitting there just for us. We claim and after a long battle, we kill him. We got no good drops hahahah. Bad night.

I have fought it a few times and its is easy. I have done it with 6 people 70+ and Horde lul. is easy cause you can Silence it. and the Roc doesnt have 60k hp. It only has like 35k total. Cause I have seen when it uses Benedection it always heals a bit over 15k hp and it will only have like 5k left.

# Dec 02 2004 at 11:14 AM Rating: Excellent
yes, it does spawn outside of the citadel in an area where you must go through the citadel first.

it is a 21-24 hour spawn

damascus ingot drops and healing staff drops are extremely rare.

this fight isnt very easy.. even if you have 70+
he has high evasion, defense, and he can be nasty with the bard songs... dont take him lightly because he is level 55.. at the time i fought him i was 61 and i barely hit him with +28 accuracy.

make sure your rdm's dispel his evasion bonus, and be prepared for curaga on horde lullaby. Bring more than one tank, he hits decently fast and he hits damn hard.. i pulled him and i died with defense gear, and defender on within 6-7 hits.. 200 a pop on me.

overall, he isnt too bad just be prepared.. a single group of prepared 75 can take this imo.. really prepared.. and it might take a while.

he does not hesitate to use benediction when his life is dangerously low the first time!

Roc was called for help on Fairy once... Really funny watching 5 HNM LS (JP and NA) yell at each other while random people are attacking it... Wound up dead still called for help... Moral of the story is, it gets laggy when 100 people come to watch...

i heard you have to go through Garliage Citadael to get to this NM. Is this true? i have never tried fighting this thing and was wondering if it wwas tru. IF you do have to go through garliage citadael, can someone tell me the exit to his spawn point? Thakn in advance.

Respawn is 21-24 hrs and yes you have to go through garlaige citadel to fight this thing. Best way to do this is to have a few ls members camp the top for the 3 hr spawn while others wait down the cliff below. Then you can just pull roc down the cliff.

It also drops Vile Elixer and Reraiser.

Killed him today with LS and got both the Damascus Ingot and Healing Staff! ^^;
Nice easy fight too. Hehe Roc rocks. XD
#REDACTED, Posted: Sep 24 2004 at 3:20 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) also drops venomous claw (weird, figuring those are typically found on the Scorpion NM's (Amikiri and Serket). I think Simurgh might occasionally drop the claw also

I fought this a couple weeks ago. We had 12 person alliance between lvl 60-67 mostly lvl 60s.

I tanked it as a 63war/nin. We had 4 RDM an 1 WHM healer so all i really had to do was voke it and atempt to get shadows up ^^;.

It took us roughly 30 minutes. We had one death where our THF SATA onto a MNK by accident for 700 -_-. I lost hate for 20 seconds and he died ><.

I was able to parry some of his attacks but at least 95% of the time he either hit shadows or me.

His best attack is giga scream which did 300-500 DMG but he didnt do it very much. The only thing to really worry about is Horde Lullaby. Just have curaga ready and you'll be fine.

No offense but for all the people who said it looks like a normal mob... wtf?

anyways Roc is like 2 times as tall as an elvaan and technically a bard. his 2 hr is benediction though. He has around 40k hitpoints and uses benediction somewhere near half life. So essentially he has ~60k hitpoints.

Yes he is a HNM so 55 means nothing. You could feasibly take him in a party of 65's but I wouldnt try anything less than that for a single party in fact I am not entirely sure I would evne try that. We have killed him 4 nights in a row and gotten the crimson blade everytimes as the best drop... so 20k gil.

Possibly just bad luck but doesnt seem the staff or ingot drop much (had 60+ thf each time also)

Roc looks like every other greater bird. He's a 21-24 hour NM, or mid-level NM as I like to call them. I don't consider Roc, Serket, Behemoth etc... to be HNM being 3 lvl 75s could take them out.

Roc is simple. He doesn't hit hard, not nearly as hard as Serket and can easily be paladin tanked. The Healing Staff is a very rare drop rate. Like all NMs, its best if you let your thief kill it to improve the drop rate.

Roc's 2hr is benediction, although he can cast Horde Lullaby, so have your curaga ready. He can also cast Massacre Elegy, so if you take more than one party, have at least one Erase in each party.

The only problem you may have, if your melee are not 75 or have optical hats, is Roc evading a lot of attacks. Other than that, it seems like Light does a decent amount of damage on him, although we haven't tried Darkness on him yet. Sharkbite from a lvl 68 Thief was severely hurting him.

It has been confirmed that the Thief does NOT have to be the final killing hit to "activate" his treasure hunter ability. He simply needs to be within the immediate area.

If this was lvl 55 i'd be able to solo it...
but no... it solo's me!

there should be a nice warning like "55-55 (but really feels like 70)"

PS - Benediction is hilarious!

umm yeah, its a HNM good luck trying to solo it at 55... only way you might be able to solo it is if you were 70+
#REDACTED, Posted: Aug 16 2004 at 7:14 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Nah you're not gonna be soloing this thing any time soon. First of all it horde's so any utsusemi buff is gone. So this means you can't melee it or it gets tp uses horde take care utsusemi. Then you're asleep and if you're some type of rdm it hits through your buffs and you're dead.

Meh, whoever said a nin can't tank this is wrong, just took Roc out the other day pt had

nin(me), whm, rdm, blm, mnk, rng

hate was a small issue since both the mnk and rng knew how to control what they were doing, Hoarde lullaby does take away shadows, and Roc does not hit 99% of the time, i could both parry and evade his attacks, blm would stun if i needed a sec to get Utsusemi up, except for me and the mnk the rest were 70+ i was 63 at the time and the monk was 66, fight lasted a half hour, and in the end the ranger did slug shot for 18-- and Eagle Eye Shot for another 17-- to kill it

btw got Healing Staff off of em too

Level ...
# Jul 01 2004 at 2:29 PM Rating: Good
Level is the level of the monster, not the level required to kill the monster.

The level is determined by the exp that is gained after killing it, not by how hard it is to kill. By looking at the exp gained after killing a monster, one can use the exp charts found at http://www.geocities.com/bside_ffxi/index.html to develop a formula to determine the "level" of the monster.

So, for example, while Roc may be a level 55 monster (I haven't confirmed it, but I wouldn't write it off), it may still take a full LV 70 party to kill him.
yes level 55
# Jun 30 2004 at 10:00 AM Rating: Default
yes it is level 55, for those of you who do not know level 55 HNMs are as tough as level 75+ mobs. The two HNM rams in la thine and highlands are 55 also i think.
Not too bad
# Jun 21 2004 at 5:23 PM Rating: Decent
Killed it a few times now with a small PT of 75s (meaning 4 to 6 people). It's best to have a PLD tank it, since a ninja will have some trouble keeping shadows up as Roc is a bard (even though it uses Benediction) and will do Horde Lullaby quite a bit, which kills all your shadows instantly. Roc's hits also seem to connect around 99% of the time, so trying to recast Utsusemi: Ichi after it kills your Ni shadows with Horde Lullaby is practically impossible unless you get lucky and paralyze stops an attack.
RE: Not too bad
# Nov 10 2004 at 3:13 PM Rating: Decent
Roc is a WHM, hence Benediction. All greater birds can sing, it's like a built in subjob or something. Simurgh is a WAR, and he sings also.

And BTW... Just about any smart level 74+ with a fully leveled ninja subjob can solo these, but it would take quite some time, several stacks of shihei, (in this case also a few poison potions), and maybe a Hi-potion ro 2 for those melee jobs, but it is by all means soloable at 74 if you are a smart and determined player.
