Fafnir in Dragon's Aery

    • Respawn time on the ??? is one minute after Fafnir is defeated or despawns.

  • If continually engaged for sixty minutes after being claimed, Fafnir will "rage", resulting in significantly increased attack power.

  • Has a draw-in effect.

  • Grants title: Fafnir Slayer

Fafnir Special Attacks

  • Absolute Terror: Single target Terror effect.

  • Dragon Breath: Frontal cone AoE Fire based magic damage.

    • As with all breath attacks, damage is most potent when standing directly in front of Fafnir. Standing on either of its front feet will mitigate most, if not all, damage from Dragon Breath.

  • Horrid Roar: Single target Dispel effect.

  • Hurricane Wing: AoE magical damage with an additional Blind effect (Circle of effect originates from mob).

  • Spike Flail: Massive AoE physical damage (Circle of effect originates from mob).

    • Fafnir will only utilize this ability if its primary target is attacking from behind

Historical Information

Fafnir (in Norse mythology) was the son of the dwarf king Hriedmar, and the brother of Regin and Otr. Armed with the Aegis helmet, or Aegishjalmr, Fafnir served as a guard for his father's golden house. As penance for killing Otr, the trickster god Loki gave Hriedmar the cursed treasure of Andvari, which included the cursed ring Andvaranauts as well as the swords Hrotti and Ridill.

Fafnir and Regin, in wanting the treasures for themselves, killed their father, only for Fafnir to take all the treasure for himself. Upon doing so, he was transformed into a dragon (a symbol of greed in European mythology) and hid away with it. Regin, wanting the treasure for himself, tricked his foster son Sigurd (in some stories, named Siegfried) into killing Fafnir for him, using the sword Balmung to pierce the dragon's heart as he was walking towards the stream he used daily to drink.

Other than usual fare like Dragon Meat, the other two key drops are Dragon Scales and the Balmung.

Dragon Scales are Ex and needed for the synthing of Dragon's Cuirass. (Think that's the name, forget. Lvl 70 DRG only armor.)

There are higher level great swords out there... can't say for RARE/EX swords, but there's a Lv 72 Great Sword that can be seen in Jeuno's AH in Midgardsormr. Balmung is a level 70 great sword...

Just because a weapon is higher level to use, doesn't always mean its stronger. Raven Scythe is the Lv43 Dark Knight AF Scythe, there are other scythes that a few levels above it, but it's still the best one to use until the Lv51? Bone Scythe for instance.

I still think Balmung is awesome though. You would probably need a Lv70+ alliance with 3 or 4 Dragoons to take out Fafnir.

While traveling through Kazham I came accrossed a High Lvl Japanese player with a Scimitar called a "Ridell", when I asked how he got it, he said it was dropped by a high lvl NM known as Fafnir. I have since been unable to find any information regarding this sword, and was wondering if someone could help me.

A word of caution: this dragon can 1-hit KO a mages from either front or back. IF you try to sneak from the back, it will swing its tail and area-damage the entire party (might kill the weak mages). If you attempt the front, you will have slower death... such as his fire breath. If you manage to defeat this NM, you just might have a chance to pick up a Balmung (most powerful great sword in the game---> 10,000,0000 gil in AH).

Wow, do actually mean to say that you think an item is "better" because it's a higher level?
