Wasn't all that hard, really. Marren did all the grunt work, really - Stoneskin, Utsusemi, etc. I kept us Refreshed, kept her Hasted, kept the mob debuffed where possible, and threw in some backup cures to help her out.
The Boreal Coeurl, I've noticed, is extremely susceptible to Paralyze. It's immune (or at least highly resistant) to Silence - it resisted even with a Wind Staff, +stat gear, and Elemental Seal, with which I almost never have trouble getting *anything* to stick. The other debuffs stick quite nicely as well.
The thing about the Boreal Coeurl is that he attacks fast. I swear, I was watching him and it was like watching a MNK on constant Hundred Fists. Well, okay, he wasn't *that* fast, but it wasn't far off. If you're tanking him, beware of that fact. He will use some nasty magic that even Marren had trouble with - Thundaga II and Burst, particularly. If you happen to be tanking this with Utsusemi and/or Stoneskin, you don't want to be on the receiving end of one of those spells when either of them is down. Utsusemi will, of course, eat up both spells, however. ;)
The Coeurl will paralyze as well, but if you've got a WHM handy it won't be much trouble. Aside from that, just keep wailing on him. He will Perfect Dodge at some point (in our case, I think he did it around 40% HP, but that's just going on my memory), but that's a minor inconvenience if you're not already having trouble with him. If you are... watch out. ;)
Other than that, have fun with it! RDM + WHM for the win!
> < DEAR LORD, this thing has high evasion! lvl 56DRG/WAR... With Haste... first... my 300% Penta Missed COMPLETELY. Then I didn't hit him at ALL! Then he used Perfect Dodge, I hit him Twice with a Double Attack once his Perfect Dodge Wore... BUT NEVER AGAIN!!! > < And I have good equip, too! Boo...
This mob is for a genkai lvl cap, so it can aggro you even with sneak/invis. SE just made this quest so you had to fight these 3 guys. when i did it, we had to fight them more than once because someone always was too slow and got aggroed when it respawned 15 seconds later.
"Chaotic Eye-Silences one person Burst-Single Target Ancient Magic spell 800dmg Thundaga II-High Dmg AE lightning based spell Blaster-not sure of effect but possibly AE Paralyze"
****! Square brought back Blaster?!
That was the bane of FFIV -- usually spelt certain death for anyone hit with it. The lesser effect would be Paralysis, but then the Panther family would use it again and pretty much kill you anyway :\
Blaster is a stare type attack, which means anyone caught face to face with the mob will get hit with paralyze. The easy way to avoid it is to hit * to disengage, then turn around. Do this the moment you see the prepare message. Coeurls also use a stare type silence move as well.
Blaster sucked pretty hard in Tactics, too. I forget which color cats used it (hmm, SE hasn't changed much), but I used to dread seeing those in a random battle.
THe bourel mobs do not aggro by sight sound or smell, they have an aggro range, which is a certain distance from he back of the cave, and they will not cross this line.
I was heading to Xarcabard to get the telepoint crystal by myself. The only job I had that could get me there stealthily enough was my 31 RDM. It was a harrowing trip, and when I got to Xarcabard, I must admit I had no idea where the telepoint was so I was just going to explore. While exploring I accidentally wandered into this coeurl's cave. I had invisibility and sneak on, but it attacked me anyway. I'm not sure if it detects by smell, or if the stealth spells are just useless against it. Anyways, it hit me for 230 damage, drew me in 3 times when I tried to run, then readied Burst. Through some insanity and incredible luck I got out of the cave, and it didn't persue me out of the cave. Anyways, long story short, Invisibility and Sneak will get you through Xarcabard, however I guess such spells are useless on the Boreal NMs. Not like you should go near those by yourself anyway, but just in case you find yourself in some deep cave.....
Murphywh gives good info. 18 people ran this one last night on Phoenix. The Coeurl also has the "Draw In" ability to pull people back near it if they try to run away. (This ability is identical to the Twinkling Treant Christmas Event NM, for those that remember). Any stragglers to get the key item will be most certainly killed by the monster when it repawns, due to lack of ability to get away.
The respawn time seems almost consistant at 13 seconds.
This is one of the 3 mobs for lv cap 60 quest Genkai II.
Chaotic Eye-Silences one person Burst-Single Target Ancient Magic spell 800dmg Thundaga II-High Dmg AE lightning based spell Blaster-not sure of effect but possibly AE Paralyze
Again this mob for us was the easiest but it was also the lsaast so we had stuns down for it and it didn't get any special attacks off ecept a few eyes. Once it's dead click the ??? in the back of the cave to get Square Frigicite. Then run before it respawns. go back to maat for your lv cap 60.
I can confirm from first-hand experience that Blaster is an AE Paralyze attack. Regular Coeurls have it too. It seems to be much more effective than the Paralyze spell. I would not try to solo any coeurl above EP because of it.
