Im killing these in Buburimu Peninsula right now, killed about 20 so far... will it drop? (MNK34/WAR17)

I wanna start walking down the path of a Summoner, unfortunatley there is a road block of leech's ; ;

He he, 3 hours later, it dropped ^^ I dont think there is any trick to getting this other than just keep fighting em. :Runs off to see all the weather!:

2nd Leech Baby!

So, last night...I was settling myself in for the LONG haul that awaited me. I've been reading forums like mad trying to decide where I would try first for the Ruby. I settled upon Buburimu Peninsula, since an IN GAME summoner I spoke with suggested that it had the best drop rate. My MAIN job at that this time is Thief. (THF being my only high job: 30).

Got a tele to Mea.
Grabbed a Chocobo and raced to the Buburimu Peninsula beach (the one nearest the Mhara entrance).

Checked out the Poison Leeches- Easy Prey.

I sneak attacked the little bugger and it began to bite me back. OUCH! For EP's those guys can hurt.
Anyways...I was resting after that first fight and re-evaluating whether or not this was such a good idea afterall. If the down-time was THIS long for HP recovery...I was expecting to be here for DAYS instead of mere HOURS...

So, I thought..."hell, I'm here already...might as well do something."

SA on the next Leech....fight...fight...ouch...fight....DROP!!!!

/shout HOLY MOLY!!! Carbuncle's Ruby just dropped on the SECOND Leech! WOOT!

Treasure Hunter or Pure Devil's-Luck helped me out here. So now...I'm off to experience one of each Weather-type, then that cute little Carby Poke'mon is all mine! :)

i have my doubts about TH1 not affecting ruby drop. ive found people looking for hours for the ruby and id come along subbing thf as a rdm and get them the ruby in 30mins or less on more than a few occasions
Ruby

I still haven't gotten the ruby after killing lots of leeches on the South Beach.

I went as my 34WHM/17BLM. I healed to full MP and then I casted Stoneskin on myself. I nuked it with Blizzard/Fire until it's about 1/3 dead. I have about half MP then. I cast Dia and use my maul to finish him off with Seraph Strike. Heal, and repeat.
Now they just need to drop it >.<

I only linked once, but I had to 2hour and I have Reraise on in case anything goes wrong.
Easy fight
# Jan 23 2006 at 5:29 PM Rating: Decent
Just to let you know you can take these easily- one at a time though- at level 28 with a couple of jobs. I took them on as a THF/WAR solo, just checked for EP and used SA. You have to be careful they dont link- but if they do use flee to Mhaura and you'll be fine. I got 4 drops in about 2hrs for 4 of us in the party, no high lvl thf and i killed all the leeches that dropped. I know TH1 doesn't affect this, but coincidence is nice. Keep at it and you'll get it- best place for drops as far as i can tell is Buburima. Good Luck! :)

I read somewhere that you can solo these as a
BLM level 32 but you can actually solo them at
level 30, believe it or not. But you have to
use some imagination and look beyond every don't-
sub-this-and-don't-sub-that-guide you have read.
This is how I did about 60 of them all by myself:
I did realise that these would bump me back to
my HP in no time with a normal setup so I subed
WAR just to see if I could take enough hits while
blasting off my strongest spells. It worked just
fine but I got killed once and stupidly enough
tried to sub THF instead (BIG mistake!).
You don't have many enfeeblespells or healing or
enchanching with this setup, basicly just the
spikes so don't forget to keep them up. And get
some pie. And something to restore your MP. And
be very careful of links, you can handle that if
you're a little bit flink with your spells (which
I was NOT). It probably helps if your skills are
as high as possible.
The day after I got my Carbuncle Ruby the normal
way, teamed up with my son and two other Swedes,
we were three that needed it and got two in an
hour around the Bard-beach. My son got his after
fifteen minutes the day after...
Oh, I was BLM 30/WAR 15.

Don't hate me..But I was like hmm.. I want to be a summoner...So I read up here. I head to Rolanberry Fields on my 43Drg/war from choco. Drop off, kill a poison leech and drop...First kill first try ever...
Soloing
# Jul 31 2005 at 1:49 PM Rating: Decent
As a Mithran 32rdm/16thf with crappy mp (only 233, and that's with MP additions), these things can be solo'd in Bubu. Be sure to buff yourself first, with Blink, Blaze Spikes, and certainly an En-Spell, then pull the thing with an enfeebling, like Slow or Paralyze. After one fight, my MP was cut down in half, whereas I was expecting to probably die with my luck. I read in here that a 32Blm was able to solo, so I figured, Why the hell not?

In other words, a 32rdm CAN indeed solo the Leeches in Bubu. They ring up as Easy Prey for me.

--------

EDIT: After three breaks (because, you know, I actually have a life aside from FFXI), I received the Ruby (along with the other two drops, which was an awesome surprise). I'd have to say that the total amount of time spent killing leeches was maybe 2 hours. I earned almost exactly 900 exp, getting between 15 and 33 exp a kill. I fought in H-9; watch out for Bogy's at night. After Qufim, I've been scarred for life.

leaches
# Jun 20 2005 at 11:05 AM Rating: Decent
me and my friend when out to get the blody robes and while waiting for the bogy to come out we decided to kill a few leaches.

On the 10th drop we got the ruby we both loted for it, she won the lot.
After that I've been after it for over a week now with no drop and even party to try and get it faster and when I got it the secound time I was kicked out of the party before I could lot for it and there left.

After that I well not help anyone get this ruby till I get it first.
yay!
# May 17 2005 at 7:52 PM Rating: Decent
First time i did it (first char) it took me well over 40+ hours of killing leeches just to get one. On my current char, i was doing the BRD quest and killed one just for fun and got it! yay me!

Just as a clarification, TH1 will not increase your odds of getting Carbuncle's Ruby. TH1 is for normal drops. Some have estimated the drop rate at about 1/100 (although some people luck out and get it in less, and others much much more). TH2 (gained at level 45) will help you with RARE/EX drops, such as Carby's Ruby.

I killed 100+ 2day in Buburimu Pen and they dropped nothing. I had THF as SJ with TH1.

Also did 200+ stickpins yesterday and they didnt drop either. Hope i have more luck after the servers are up.

Recieved ruby on 6th kill, using Banishga.
Time: Firesday, 18:42
Weather: Water
Moon: Last Quarter (48%)
Mindset: Doubtful

The most important factor besides weather seems to be mindset. Their exists a psychic link between you and the leech, and expecting anything will result in failure. Do not expect a Ruby.

Also, has anyone gotten a drop from the Poison Leeches in Ordelle's Caves? They seem to be lower level and easier to solo around the mid to late 20's, as long as you engage when they're a safe distance apart.
where else can i get this?
# Jul 26 2004 at 5:51 PM Rating: Decent
hi, i just hit lv 30 not that long ago and i was wondering where the best place for a lv 30 war to get the ruby from.

You can kill (supposedly) any leech family mob to get the carbuncle ruby (except Qufim I hear).

Most people seem to think that the drop rate in Bubirimu Penninsula is much higher than Valkurm Dunes (or other places Lev 30 players are likely to be killing in).
