Soloing this bad boy

Just soloed this as a 50MNK/25DRK.

Of the three mobs for LB1, I think this might have been the tougest for me. That could just be due to the difficulty of getting through the Banishing Gate.

Thanks to the other posters, I found the correct place to camp these guys. I did find that if you settle yourself right between the two caverns, you will not get agro (though I didn't use magic in any fights). Honestly, these guys didn't link or agro me once during my stay.

They bats in the area were a problem. Since they could kill me, I couldn't use them to build up TP beforehand.

As far as the fight goes, I have to admit that I was unable to beat these things without using my 100 Fists (thank god for reraise earrings); they hit too hard.

As far as self-destruct goes, it wasn't a problem. Again, thanks to previous posters, I had the idea that stun might interrupt it. When one attempted to use it when it was around 50% hp, I hit it with Shoulder Tackle which saved my skin. Any WS with stun should work in the situation.

Was 1/3 on the bomb coal and even picked up my first kindred seal from it.
Would I die?

This rate is nice y cant all rate be like this

1st 0
2nd 3
3rd 1

we were done more complex gettin there
Leave does it help?
# Aug 29 2005 at 6:54 AM Rating: Decent
I'm not sure if this works with bombs but every since I was leveling in the yhoater jungle when I saw the goblins starting Bomb Toss I would use Leave and it would stop if you get it soon enough, it will stop bomb toss and then I would just recharm and fight sometimes getting hit once or twice but does alot less dmg than bomb toss.

These guys are nice and easy to solo at my level! I didn't need to get Healing Breath off once, and the Coal dropped for my friend (who stood back, just in-case things went bad) on the first kill ^^

I haven't tackled coal yet but I'm guessing likt the feu follets in gusgen, you will want the bombs to self-destruct on their own while you are safely away from blasting radius, releasing just right after the bomb dies, easy xp easy drop. :)

Mold is soloable as well, better duo'd, and good money to be had as they drop dark crystals. I trioed it as it was also a leveling up session, good xp when mixed in with hornflies and beetles.
100%

I'm not 100% sure, but i was told by many high levels, and people in LS that this was 100% drop, so to all the people that think you are lucky cuz you got it on first try, everyone gets it first try.

I've seen it take up to 3 of these to get a Bomb Coal, so it's definitely not 100%. Still by far the easiest of the limit 1 items though.

Went there with a 73rng, high lvl rdm, and a high lvl pld.

FIRST explosure, dropped 2 coals. Almost every other one after that dropped one as well.

This was done on 12/21/04, so it is AFTER the big X-mas update.

FAQ: Bomb Coal for Genkai I
# Dec 13 2004 at 12:02 PM Rating: Excellent
*
153 posts
Hi... I did this thing last night and I couldn't find real information (more than 'horror stories' and 'lucky stories') on it. So I promised to myself doing this small FAQ for those who come here in search of information.

What do I need?
-You need either a high lvl who can solo the explosures easily (60+) or a party of 50ishs. Remember the bombs are Ts, so you don't need a uber party... I did it with a 50RDM (me), 50DRG, 50SAM and 50RNG. We had never partied before. Later a 55WHM helped us when there was a wipe out (darn bats). Note: This faq is intended for those not getting high level help. I personally suggest not getting high level help.. . whats the fun in it? Special note: If you are a BST (or a very good RDM) you may be able to solo this. In paper is possible, but I've never met someone who did, actually... Please let me know your results if you did it, I would love to hear your experience.
-I also would suggest triggering the quest first... This is not necessary, but it is my belief (from what I've seen in other quests, but I haven't seen anyone else saying this) that the item drop rate might increase if someone needs the item. Totally empirical, though.
-Oh, and you need 3 people to go through the first gate. If you are lucky, you may find a party there... don't count on it. It took one hour of my time to recruit people for this quest and to wait for them, and no party showed up (sunday 6PM EST). When we were wiped out, we chocobed back and still no one was there.
-A map of Garlaige helps.
-A handful of sneak oils if you don't have enough mage capability to sneak everyone. If you have the time, you can also ignore this and prepare to kill every aggroing mob in the way... it helps building tp, but you'll have to fight around 15 easy to tough mobs just to get to the room.
- And you need to set your HP in Jeuno. You don't want to end up dead and with your hp in Rabao. Chances are you may die so please save yourself (and your party) some time and pain.

Where can I find the explosure?
I know, it may seem obvious... well, not if you are like me (I hate Garlaige and I haven't partied here more than twice... I've been always in alternate leveling places). Anyway... first, you are shooting for the banishing gate #1... (I-9)

1- Enter garlaige, go down the stairs, jump over the lvl30ish crowd, and you will reach the first hallway.
2- Go left... beware of not falling down! I believe beetles aggro to sight and link, so you may want to fight them (ep) just to make sure you are not making a train... I soloed them at 50, 2 50s will kill it real easy. Pass the first intersection
3- Go right in the last intersection... you don't want to enter any room, and you shouldn't find anything else than not-aggroing bats and some aggroing beetles in your way.
4- Turn left. That's the banishing gate #1. There are 4 buttons there... the gate opens when all 4 are pressed. Open it, go through the door.

Now the map changes. You are going now to the semi-circle area rooms (H-7)-(I-8)

5- Again, you don't want to enter any room. Go right from banishing gate, turn left in the corner, go all the way and then turn left in the corner again, and then right into the tunnel. Note that all bats aggro here, so sneak up if you are not planning to fight.
6- Follow the tunnel down, and then left twice. You will see a big room with a lot of explosures in it.. (around 6 in the first room, 3 inthe adyacent room). We made the tunnel just before the room the camp.

How do we kill them?
Easily. Your puller should wait till is safe to pull without link. They never linked, so I don't know if sleep is an option in case you have a link.
They are terrible easy to kill except for one thing, mentioned several times before: Self-destruction. If you have a DRK, stun will be a life-saver.
Mages, keep stoneskin and blink at all times up. (Blink doesn't help to avoid damage, but it helps to avoid hits to your stoneskin, in case you get any aggro).
On top of that, you want to kill it (or at least reduce hp) as fast as possible.. I believe self destruct makes more damage with mob's hp high. We got one self destruct at the beginning of the fight and it did 900+ damage to our SAM. The DRG died too. My stoneskin saved me from a sure death and the RNG survived with 100 hp.
So yes, you need to do damage quick, even a whm should be doing some banishing... the whm won't be healing much, anyway... unless self destruct occurs, of course.
If the bomb does not self-destruct, it should be dead in less than 30 secs... and you should be able to chain 3 or 4 of them for 35xp... lol.
Drops are not an issue. We killed 5 bombs... and we got these results: 0-1-1-1-2
I think is actually pretty rare they don't drop anything...

What can go wrong?
-Self-destruct. That's almost a guaranteed dead for someone in your party. Our first bomb self-destructed and our 5th bomb did too. The first killed the DRG and the SAM, the second one only the SAM. So, again, mages keep stoneskin up, and bring some scrolls of instant reraise if you don't have raise in your party. Usually, it is safe to re-raise.
Also, even if everybody dies, the bomb dies too and I believe you get the lot... so don't all hp before getting the item, if it dropped.
In case of a TPWO, I may suggest hping and chocobing back... it might be faster than wait for a raise and weakened status.

- Bats.
Everything would've been just fine in my party if it wasn't for these guys. After the first bomb self-destructed, Only the RNG and me were standing. I had enough mp to raise 1, so I raised the SAM. I didn't see a funnel bat close by and It aggroed the RNG. Almost without mp and with out hp, we didn't stand a chance. So... my advice... don't let this happen to you. Make sure you kill any close bats in the tunnel before engaging a bomb...

I hope this is helpful for future 51's

Edit: OMG! So many spelling errors... I'll edit it when I'm home.

Note to all BSTs. If you time Sic properly (aka after Beserk) one Funnel Bat can be enough to take one of these without meleeing.

man, today was awesome,
i asked my 64 NIN friend if he would help me just get one of the items, he came and his 60 whm friend, we got

paper on 2nd, mold on 2nd, then we went to get the bomb

we succesfully made it to the bomb, killed it, first try

then we teleported out before i got the coal :PPP

so we went back, got the coal, and now i'm the happiest man alive

a quick question...

Can anybody verify that Utsusemi will allow you to evade Self-Destruct?

Unfornutately Utsusemi (at least ichi, can't speak for ni, thf50/nin25 currently) ...never really works for AoE's, doesn't suck up a shadow or use them or anything, just hits you ;; (and then there's the horrible -ga's which just suck up all of your shadows)

Utsusemi will not allow you to evade the self-destruct. I verified this personally. Barfire is your best defense and I believe is required for this fight.

Thanks. We were lucky when we went to fight the explosures and were able to successfully {Stun} every single one, so they were never able to self-destruct. I did, however, find out the answer to my question during my fight with dark spark -_-' I survived with twelve hit points.

Lucky. I had Barfire, Protect IV, and Shell IV up, and got hit for 854 from Dark Spark's Self Destruct (and my max was 777). That was as a 50THF/25NIN, mind you...

RE: Hellmine?
# Jul 25 2004 at 12:26 AM Rating: Good
There are actually three bombs in Garliage. Puroboros, in the first area, are around Lv44-46. Explosures, which drop the Bomb Coal, are beyond the first banishing gate.
Hellmines are deeper in, and are higher level.
EZ
# Jul 11 2004 at 4:18 PM Rating: Decent
Piece of cake if your party is not impatient and you are all properly sneaked. You will need sneak all the way from the banishing gate down to the area where the explosures are. Once you're there, just be careful, have someone ready to stun if the bomb starts to go off, and it's cake. We got 3 bomb coals off one explosure..
wtf? >_<
# Jun 28 2004 at 2:28 AM Rating: Decent
so this is the only item left that I need for genkai...
tonight I got into a party, started by a (former) linkshell member also at level 50 (unsure if he finished genkai already or not)
joined under the impression that we would go for some bomb coals (it's quite obvious that's what I'm after, he knows this)
got a party together relatively fast, got 3 people who already finished it--level 51 and two 52
and all of a sudden it's "an exp party" they won't go out of the way to help me get an item that's a gauranteed drop so that I can stay on with them when they're going to exp IN THE SAME AREA THE EXPLOSURES ARE IN!
what the hell!?
it started as a bomb coal party and then they wouldn't even go a few rooms out of the way to do just that!
gods I hate this quest... -_-
I'd rather spend my next 5 levels in Valkurm Dunes than have to keep doing this damn quest
RE: wtf? >_<
# Mar 24 2005 at 2:58 AM Rating: Decent
Same deal here- I told the pty ldr that I only wanted to get bomb coal, not xp. He invites, so I ask the pty where we need to go to get the coal. Then they tell me that we would not be going anywhere near where the explosures were. WTF? So I told them again that I was not interested in xp, wished them luck and disbanded. Wouldn't you know it - I get a bunch of /tells telling me that i was rude for leaving the pty. Oh well - I guess I owe total strangers my leisure time.

OMG how can people say this is the easiest, i woulda gone back for 6 more papers instead of doing this!!!

horrible horrible time. i joined a group of about 10 people, just as half of them got slaughtered after the first banishing gate. almost all of them quit after that. we got a few more people, and gave it a go with about 8 people this time. some fool was running far ahead (saty in a close group after you pass the first gate!!!!) got aggro, some tried to help, ultimately it was another slaughter with tons of adds. so we gave it ago with only 6 people. well, one person was still stuck inside dead, and as we all regrouped, he d/c'ed and wasn't to return till we finished the quest :\ so it was just 5 of us, me (50 PLD), a BLM, 2 WHM's and a DRG (i think we were all 50 even). first we had to deal with tons of bats. had to keep killing them. then lightining and earth elementals kept spawing, making it difficult to pull/fight. the first 3 explosures... dropped nothing. the next, dropped 1 coal (we needed 2 at this point). finally the 5th, started doing self-destruct, which i shield bashed and cancelled, only for it to use it again like 5 seconds later, i used flat blade and a mage used brainshaker (i think that's the name) but alas it didn't stop it and killed me :P and this one dropped 2 coals. there went that 1 tnl i stared at for almost a week! oh well. only 500 till 51 now :P

learn from our mistake, don't take more than a full pt. too hard to keep everyone sneaked/invisi'd beyond the first gate, and watch that self destruct!!!
Genkai 1

Just did this part of genkai 1 last night with five other people, no high level help. At first we had eight people moving through garlaige citadel, but in the first room which had three bombs and two magic pots, someone got aggro, we ended up aggroing funnel bats as well, and had to teleport/escape out (The WHM died).
With this one of the two PLD decided to leave, but the rest of us decided to give it a go. Only to, again, in the same area, aggro something and have to teleport/escape out. Both WHM decided to leave, as well as the THF, but me (RDM), the BLM (who had already done this part), a MNK and the remaining PLD stuck around. We invited another RDM and the BLM got a 50 DRK (who had also already done genkai, but was just being nice) to help. The BLM went back in and memorized the path we were to take, and when we were all assembled we started off, once again.

There are two things of note here. One, you do not, I repeat not, want to fight the bombs in this room. Secondly, you want to invis before reaching the end of the tunnel to avoid aggro, which will drop your sneak. Invis/sneak the entire party and run through the first room with bombs, down a tunnel, through a second room with bombs, and up another tunnel until you reach a corridor with rooms that contain the levers for the third banishing gates. Sneak is all that is necessary here, until you venture into the separate rooms (of which, two were found to contain one bomb each).

If I remember correctly, the first room on the right and the second room on the left had bombs. The first room on the left had a magic pot, and the second room on the right had fallen officers (which checked T to a level 49 RDM). Take a deep breath, go in, buff, and take the bombs out one by one and pray they don't explode.

I have heard bomb coal is the easiest of the three genkai items to obtain. In terms of drop rates, yes. Almost always the bomb drops one coal. When they explode, however, they do 700+ damage (to the MNK, one explosion did 1000+ damage to her, of course taking her from full HP down to zero). The damage done seems to be variable, because I died one time and another time did not. The longest part at this point was waiting for the bombs to repop.

Make sure you have a BLM with escape, easiest way to get out. A few of us died once, but all that needed it got their coal, and it was worth it in my opinion. Finally I want to thank Geniea and Torent (our BLM and DRK, respectively) neither of whom needed genkai 1 done but both decided to take the time out to help us anyway. ^^ If you're on the fairy server, never pass them up for a party.

Now..onto those liches. >.>

WHM must have reraise active at all times

after the mob explodes and you reraise cast reraise again before attempting to raise your party just in case funnel bats decide to rape you to pieces
