The best way to explain it is...

The entrance to Quicksand Caves you want to use is in the southwest corner of Western Altepa Desert. The correct entrance itself is NOT visible on the map. At the southwest corner of the map, you'll find a tunnel filled with Anticans. Follow this tunnel until you emerge outside again, in an area not found on the map. Nearby, you'll find a regular trench-type entrance. Head down, and into Quicksand Caves.

The Anticans inside this portion of Quicksand Caves will aggro 75's, so make sure you have Sneak/Oil at this point. Follow the tunnel straight ahead. You'll see a weight sensor on the floor and an Ornate Door, but ignore this one. Keep going, and hug the right wall until you reach an Ornate Door leading due east.

You'll need 3 tarus, 2 Elvaan/Mithra/Humes, or 1 Galka to open this door. I was able to access it with the help of a Mithra, and I'm a Hume, so a little mix-and-match with work.

Once through this door, continue hugging the right wall. You'll make a little bit of a loop, and you'll find another Ornate Door leading to the east. Again, stand on the sensor, and when the door opens, quickly pass through it before it closes again. Inside, you'll see a long room that looks like a dead-end, with a massive, black hole on the eastern floor. Make sure Sneak/Oil is still good, and jump in.

You'll wind up in a sandy pit, more than likely right next to a Sand Digger. If you exit the pit, you'll enter a room with several Girtabs (scorpions, EP @75) and more Anticans. There's another Sand Digger in this room, but unless you can engage it with ranged attacks or magic, it's probably best to leave it alone, since everything thing else in the room will eat you if you try to melee it. I was able to kill it whenever it moved to edge of the room, by nuking.

If you move past this room, you'll enter into a long tunnel, where you can find two more Sand Digger spawns. If you keep going, you'll zone back into Western Altepa Desert. The drop rate on this is fair, about 1/20 for me. I spent the majority of my time waiting for respawns or resting for MP.

If you can help it, try to silence them, and keep them that way. I was able to keep them shut up for the majority of my time there, but I did see them cast Stone III and Stonega III, and given their level, I wouldn't be surprised if they could use Quake or Stone IV. Also, they link. But worms are a little stupid, and you can always zone quickly and come back if something goes wrong.

Good luck and happy hunting.

If anybody knows of another spot to farm these guys, please do share. The particular spot mentioned in previous posts is hardly suited for more than one group wishing to farm for the item due to few mobs and their long pop time.

I was in here for 4 hours killing these things nonstop the second they pop, not a single drop >.>

advice: you better bring treasure hunter II along with you or you will be incredibly bored and frustrated trying to get this.

there are about 5-6 worms total and the respawn rate is about 10 minutes, i must have killed around 50 of these without a single drop.

this is papyrus x 10. ;;

Just thought I'd put this here in case anyone wants to go after the mob.

There is only one place I know to find these mobs at, but there could be others. First off, you'll need at least 2 people to open the doors inside Quicksand Caves. Go to Rabao, hop on a chocobo, and head to C-11 in Western Altepa Desert. When you come out of the tunnel there, you'll see the canyon-like entrance to the caves.

Once inside the cave, keep going until you come to the second door, it will be on your right. Have 2 people stand on the pressure plate for a couple seconds and it will open. Keep going (there is an intersection but it leads to the same place) till you get to another pressure plate. Go through and you'll see an enormous hole in the ground. Sneak before you fall and you'll find the san diggers there.

I was able to solo the diggers as an Elvaan 70BRD/35WHM (lullaby, stoneskin, ballad, repeat). Took me 5-7 minutes per worm. The drop rate for ancient salt is incredibly rare. I never got any ore drops from the diggers either, just a few crystals and eventually one ancient salt. Good luck!

If you're a Bard and want to solo these for the opo opo drop then one way to do it is to just DoT them to death. They hit hard so meleeing them can be dangerous. Just keep Dia II and Requiem VI on them and they will die eventually. They are worm types so they can't chase you. They can however cast magic on you so either stay out of range or silence them.

For the pressure plates, either have:

1 galka
2 hume, elvaan, mithra (you can mix however you like)
3 tarutarus

to open the doors.
