Many fish aren't sold by the npcs unless a player sells the fishies to them first.
RE: BS!
# May 26 2006 at 12:39 PM Rating: Excellent
These merchants sell it but its like the guild where certain items are sold only if someone has sold them to the guild. So it is not BS, just confusing.

Bastore Sardine = 24 Guild Points.

Maximum per day = 1200 Guild Points.

Turn in 50 Bastore Sardines to gain the maximum.

As the description says, only Mithra can eat these. Mithra is the only race that can eat raw fish. This is similar to Galka being the only race able to eat raw red meats (such as Hare Meat and Giant Sheep Meat).
eh?

What the heck? Why can't I get these at the guild? They're just not there.

That is the nature of fishing in FFXI. You may get 3 skillups in a row and then nothing for hours. Catching fish or not catching fish seems to have nothing to do with it.
RE: Cant Catch
# Mar 04 2006 at 7:28 PM Rating: Decent
it also depends on where you are fishing, you get less skillups in town

This little fish is an easy prey, you find it in all these places with Lugworm, Robber Rig, Rogue Rig, Sabiki Rig.

A good fish for starting fishing (lv 0-11)

You can fish it @ :
Batallia Downs
Bibiki Bay
East Sarutabaruta (Sea)
Ferry
Kazham
Lower Jeuno
Manaclipper
Mhaura
Norg
Port Bastok
Port Jeuno
Port Windurst
Sea Serpent Grotto (Lake)
Selbina
South Gustaberg
Valkurm Dunes
West Sarutabaruta (Sea)

This fish sells cheap on Ragnarok server.

Hope this helps ^^

I catch tons of these using a Tarutaru fishing rod and a Sabiki Rig. Even at level 0 I caught at least one of these with nearly every cast, and oddly enough after fishing 3 or 4 stacks of these, my fishing skill hasn't gone up a single point.

You can catch them in the port area of any city. I usually fish these up while waiting for the airship to arrive.
how much?
# Jun 03 2004 at 4:21 PM Rating: Decent
how much does a stack of these roughly cost on the boat?

What is the best bait to catch these bastore sardines with?
RE: what is best bait?
# Feb 21 2004 at 9:00 PM Rating: Decent
The best bait to catch Bastore Sardines is the Sabiki Rig by far. If you don't want to buy a Sabiki Rig, your next best bet would be Lugworms.
Where to Find

I have been fishing quite a bit lately so I bought a Carbon rod and a Sabiki rig. (Combined cost: 1500 gil) I rode the boat from Mhaura to Selbina to help a friend out and then back. I caught 13 Bastore Sardines and 8 Quus. And my fishing is only level 1. So its a good place to catch em!

It's a good place to catch them if you can deal with a) the monsters you can pull up (pugs and crabs) and b) the occasional pirate/sea monk/sea horror/phantom spawn. ^^;

It's much easier to catch bastore sardines off the pier by the fishing guild in windurst port (or for that matter, either pier in Mhaura or Selbina). You can even get guild support while you do it. No monsters pulled up and no Sea Horror whipping you for 450 damage.

I also marvel at the price you paid for your fishing gear. Both the rod and the rig are easily at least 2K EACH bought at the Auction Houses in Siren.
