well ive been reading these fishing tips for days now. my fishing is up to 12 and have tried for the last 3 days for moat carp in windurst, waters, walls , and woods. and have not caught one. ive tried with all the diff. fishing rods, and gear. plus the diff. times of day with the moon in diff. phase. and still nothing. and im not talking about standing there for a few mins doin this. im standing there for 5 or 6 hrs and still nothing. im begging to think that moat carp are a mythical creature or something throwen in the game. so the gms can sit back and laugh at all the ppl trying to fish moat carp. sorry im very very upset. the one moat carp i did have i brought at the ah. for my fishing test. im just a little upset over this and all the gill ive spent on trying to catch these fish

Are you fishing with the correct bait and in the correct bodies of water? If you're trying to catch Moat Carp in saltwater, then you are going to be there for 5-6 hours without catching one since they are a freshwater fish.

I've caught several Moat Carps today in Windurst Woods at the Fountain using a Composite Fishing Rod and Insect Paste (Insect Ball). I also caught a couple of Moat Carp in East Sarutaruba.

To help you on your journey.

My observation while fishing in Rabeo for Moat Carps.

I presently use three rods, Composite, Mithran and Carbon.

Depending on the time of day and the type of weather one of the three rods will help me continue to catch fish or caps. What determines whether I should change rods is dependant on some messages I recieve while fishing.

The three messages are;

"You did not catch anything"
"Fish you caught was to small for the hook"
"Your catch got away"

These messages can be due to these factors;

1, The rod you are using is to small or to big for the fish thats in the pond at the time.

What I believe can causes this trigger are two things.

A) I've come to the conclusion that there are three sizes of fish for the same fish species. I will refer to Moat Carps as an eg. from here on out.

**Small Moats are only catchable with Carbon Rods.
When to fish for small?
4am - 7 am
1 Weather Earth Icon 4 - 7 am
4pm - 7 pm
1 Weather Earth Icon 4 - 7 pm

20% to Full Moon and 20% after Full Moon are prime times to try Carbon on other hours of the day.
If Weather shows one Earth or Fire Icon then use Carbon during Full Moons at above times.
Other moon phases use the time slot above.

**Medium Moats are only catchable with Mithran Rods.
12am - 4 am
12pm - 4 pm
One or Two Icon's of either Earth or Fire during 30% before and after Full Moon.
I use Mithran if the Carbon stops catching anything after two casts if a Weather Icon appears. If I still do not land after two casts on the Mithran then I go to the Composite.
I tend to use the Mithran more so during 30% before and after New moons as I would a Carbon during a Full Moon. Even simular Time frames. And utilize Composite As I would the Mithran during the Full Moon time frame.

**Large Moats are only catchable with Composite Rods.
7 am - 12 pm
7 pm - 12 am
30% before and after New Moon when there are single or double Icons of Earth or Fire.
Occationally on Full Moon when weather again has double icons of Earth or Fire.

2) You've been in the zone to long and must rezone to reset your zone timer which I believe is in place to prevent BOTerz from timeless fishing.

When a catch gets away due to being to small for the hook, it's not dependant on your fishing skill so much as the size of the hook. So if you get this message go to a smaller rod as its the hook on the rod and not the bait that will determine the size of the hook.

When you get message saying your fish got away again its dependant on the rod your using again. Only this time you will need to switch to a larger rod or smaller rod to determine which size is in the water. I ussually go to a larger rod. then work my way down depending on the time of day and the weather along with which moon phase. ^^

I get about 1 or 2 times where I dont land anything due to figuring out which rod to use at the time. But the majority of the the time I'm landing fish or Caps. Then theres the rezoning too.

I was at Rabeo one day on a New Moon with two fire Icons. Everyone at the hole was complaining about not catching anything. You guessed right. I was using a Composite and was landing left right and centre. While those around me were using Carbon Rods or Mithrans. ^^

Apperantly the Lu removes everything stated above except the Zoning part. ^^ And if this rule applies to other areas outside Rabeo I can see why it would be difficult to implement this type of fishing as rods would be constantly broken which would put a huge damper.

I found your message quite informative [rate up], and I will have to give your suggestions a try when I go to Rabeo, but I wanted to comment that you need to be careful with the statement "are only catchable with _____ rod", since your message only states the top three, and most expensive rods (not counting LuShang).

I started fishing in Windy with a Yew rod and some worms. Yew rods are the cheapest, but do break the most I'm sure. I latter picked up a Bamboo rod from a Goblin Fisher (free rods are best!). That worked well until I went to Port Windurst. It finally broke, but only after catching 3000g worth of Quus and Sardines. I did go on to buy Composite and Carbon rods.

Recently I got tired of the "too small to catch with this rod" message, and tried a Bamboo rod again in Windurst Walls. I found it caught more fish than the Composite, plus Rusty Buckets too. I'm sure it will break on any other rusty item though.

So especially for anyone who cannot afford a Composite rod, and an endless supply of insect ball bait, I suggest you beatup some gobs, get a couple of rods, pickup some worms from the Catalyst shop in Windy Waters (cheaper than fishing guild, imho), and give it a try.

Later, once you've made some money from your fishing, buy the fishing gear, and better rods.

Note to SE: I would like to see a Fishing Tackle Box furnishing, so I have a place for all my fishing gear in one spot.

It's called a mannequin and will hold all "tackle" but the bait (or {worm} belt if you have one).
Anyone have a link with a decent skill up chart for fishing by level?

ok, this is how i do it, i have a carbon fishing rod, and i only use Little worms, i fish in north sandoria on the bridge to get the the Mog House, neway i can fish there and get an occasional Tricoloured carp and crayfish, mostly Moat Carp, well this actually works out well, u can use the Cray fish for crafting {boiled, peeled} now the Tricoloured u can either sell or craft with at Corua {Merchant, rite inside west raun enterence to Southern San d'Oria} i can sell 103 gil now for a stack u get a pretty nice 1236 gil {i didnt sell at AH because the prices really confused me, Ex: they sold 1 for 1k and a stack for 1k which made my brain kinda get cramps why SUMONE would do that but anyways} then u can sell the Moat carp at AH for what rite now is 4k, if you are just starting out being a fisher, save up for a Carbon because i have yet to break mine where i fish, and if u can't afford just buy a Bamboo and catch a stack of moat carp, sell and then buy carbon, {u can get Little Worms at a women in south sandoria named Lusian {or something like that} right outside of Raimbroy's Grocery, well good luck everyone hope u get some good gil!
