that did not have a sub job yet (incl. me) .
I lot, 2 of us lot it and the Party leader won!!
I must say he was very lucky !!

I cant find ne gouls newhere i hav looked all over valk and they never show up it sucks ive been looking for ages I NEED THE SKULL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The dunes only have a few ghouls that pop at nights. I usually go to Gusgen mines since the theres a good chunk of ghouls there, and they are constant.
The best place to get these is NOT gusgen but rather valk dunes- when I had to get my skull a few months back, people were killing ghouls for hours, and only a few drops. Horrible. So I found a team in valk for killing the ghouls, and we got nearly a 100% drop rate... Morale of story: get skull in valk, not gusgen.
Also, ghoul spawns in the main area of valkurm, along the cliff between outpost and selbina. Hope that helps!

but i dont think a rdm18 could solo this, as they checked dc to me as a 19war, you could use help, but if u need help on leviathen send a tell my way, btw.. free.

No. A party of lvl 18s will not have an easy time fighting ghouls in most cases, especially not if they go to gusgen (where the undead are much more prevalent).

Where is the map location of ghouls in Valcrum? They never drop skulls for me,or if they do i always loose the lot for it lol

The best place to kill ghouls (provided you have the firepower to kill them without dying) is Gusgen Mines. They spawn all day long and there are lots of them, unlike Valkurm Dunes where they spawn only at night, and there are only a few.
Today as i was walking through the dunes on my way to camp ve i saw a ghoul and killed it. thinking about the posibility of getting one of the sj items i had unstacked about twenty beastman's seals so aything i got would sit in my treasure pool. I got the skull drop on the kill and gave a shout to see if anyone needed it. Someone responded and they disbanded. I invited they lotted and i felt like a nice guy. Gave me a warm tingly feeling helping a poor noob out.

Been looking for a skull for 3 days, I havn't even seen what a ghoul looks like yet... ;_;

The ones with scythes are also spell casters, whereas the ones with clubs are not (iirc).

I was partying with a group of people that were about lvl 19 all around, I was 17 and desperately watned to get a skull 'cause that's all I had left.

I'm level 20 blackmage, can i go to gusgen mines solo? If no, what level is the best to get in?
Ya know, some people are really nice. Someone GAVE me A Magicked Skull and a Damselfly Worm before I even hit lv 18 and got the quest.

He likely means that someone killed the mobs, the items dropped, but did not distribute. The kind person then invited the above poster and let him lot to obtain the items. I always do this if the items do not autodistribute.

i have a theory about the rare drops. I believe that the closer you are in level to the mob the more likely you are to get the drop. It always seems this way when camping nms. 43 kills of jack got my lvl 65thf friend one drop then the random lvl 10 war killed it and got it on the first drop. Seems the same way with all rares. Just a theory though i have no real proof.
This probably won't help anyone, but I thought I'd just mention that I killed a Ghoul in Pashow Marshlands for the heck of it, and it dropped a Magicked Skull.

I just got the skull yest, the funny part is the ghoul came out not in the night time. I am pretty sure, because I look at the game time. Camping for around 2 hours, so far only manage to figh with one Ghoul and get one skull. Full party (3WAR, 1BLM, 1WHM, 1RDM). It was fun

To sum all of these posts up,if you arnt/dont have a theif in your party, you will not get a skull for a VERY long time. WHM tries for three hours and gets nothing, (lvl 15)theif trys for 30 mins. and gets 1-3. moral of the story? stop whining and get a theif! or if you prefer to sit there killing the ever-rare ghouls for the rest of eternaty....

That's not entirely accurate. I was partying in Valkurm yesterday. I played in a party as a pld with no thieves we picked up 3 Magick'd skulls out of 6 attempts over 2 game days. It's just luck of the draw, though I will admit that thieves help push luck in your favor.

The drop rate is not so bad. So far I've killed 5 and 4 of them dropped the skull. I have treasure hunter though, maybe that helped.

For all those who say you can't trade it you are right. However, there is away around it. Simply get 30/30 inventory by manually seperating a stack of something, kill a ghoul, and get the skull in treasure. Party with someone who needs it, you pass on it while the other player lots for it.
I have done this so many times in valkrum while camping Valkrum Emperor. Trust me it works!!! I charge 500 gil for each skull i give someone and for what's it's worth 500 gil > 3 hours fighting in Gusgen.
Even though i shout "Anyone need skull? I'm 30/30 and it's inventory. Trust me it works! I realize that skull is rare/ex. I only charge 500 gil" I still get 1 billion tells saying that you can't trade it. /sigh....
If your on pheonix don't be suprised to see me in Valkrum shouting that. It seems i farm there every day.

Does your inventory have to be 30/30 for a new PT member to lot for the drop?
Or were you perhaps refering to solo play?

I got a magicked skull off a ghoul i just happened to come across in jugner forest rofl.
the skull is dropped off of GHOULS be gouls from the dunes, my butt, or outer space. as long as the name is ghoul then they can drop it

I got 1 thanks to a couple of very cool upper level players.After a couple of hours in the mines we got 2,I paid the guys 3000gil for the help, and it was worth it. that same day i also got to see the outland area where you can fight each other.
Outer Horutoto Ruins maybe the easiest place to get this. My set group(WAR/MNK, THF/MNK, RDM/BLK, WHM/BLK) leveled 20-22 off these guys and threw away at least 6 skulls. A full group of 18s with their act together should be able to handle the lower cons.
Do the very easy Horutoto Map quest first to get a map (http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/quests.html?realm=Windurst&fquest=111). Then enter the Horutoto Tower near Giddeus and go through the cracked wall. Once through, look for a "D" shaped section of the map. You want to set up camp at the top of the "D". You may have to fight through some goblin and bats (bats link!) to get back there. Horutoto is usually Windy controlled, so get signet before you go for crystal loot.

i can confirm this is dropped from ANY Ghoul.
I have (just from average play) Ive gotton a magicked skull from ghouls in Valkurm, Buburimu, Gusgen, and Maze of Shakrami. so if you need a skull pick a place and go at it ;)
nice thing is in the mines and maze ther are always ghouls there, so if it will proly go faster to hunt in shakrami, plus youll be helping out the loow lvls, you know how much it sucks to get agroed by a ghoul at lvl 15 im sure ;)
despite this I still say that the mhaura version of teh subjob quest goes faster. I get dahmel saliva at almost 1 in 4 dahmels. and rabbit tail is easy to get in a pty of lvl 18s. and I can get bloody robes all over the place. pllus boggies are a more concentrated spawn than the ghouls in the dunes. just my $.02

If you've got high level help, then yes, this is the way to go. However, trying to fight a bogy with a group of level 18 characters is suicide. Bogys range in level from 25-33, so at 18 they'll all probably con IT++ no matter what level they are, so you never know how strong the one you're pulling is. And even a level 25 bogy is nasty enough to be a big risk to a level 18 party.
If I was going about this with no high level help, I'd much rather kill ghouls. Most ghouls will check Tough around level 18, and that would never be a risk to a full party, or even to a 3 or 4 member party who know what they're doing.
