Latent Effect

* Must be under level 60 Cooking with no synthesis support

According to Wiki.

.... or just equip it and check your Cooking Skill level under Menu >> Stats >> Crafting Abilities.... then unequip it and look at the number. If your latent +1 is active, you will notice the number increased when equipped.... does that makes sense?

As mentioned already, the crafting skill gears don't change the number shown on the craft status screen.

The theory on the trainee gloves is that you have to have sigil active OR be in the past for the latent +1 to go into effect. Perhaps it is the same with the knife? Time will tell... until then, however... experiment!

Sigil tested to no avail, latent in effect on a 32 cook in present day with no status effects (Sigil/Signet/Sanction not on).

Please do not mistake this for me callin you wrong....I am asking just to better understand, but how does this person "know" that the latenet was in effect? There is no element (even if there was you wouldn't be able to tell because you can't check your equipment mid-synth), the +1 does not show up in your skills chart, you can't synth out of your calss whether with or without a +1 item, and as long as you can maket the recipe; you always have a chance of success.
Unless someone out there is able to read whatever information is transfered between client and server, I don't see any way of knowing when the latent is activated.
Please prove me wrong because I would love to be able to get these new items to function!

No offense taken ^^.

I tested it by attempting to synth an apple pie (48) as a 32 cook. Without the knife equipped, it reported "This craft is beyond your current skill level". I then equipped the knife, and performed the synthesis (failed, of course). I had no status effects on me at the time, and was in present-day.

So, in essence, you *can* synth out of your class with a +1 skill item (or this one, at least).

EDIT:

It was tested by a 60+ cook however, and did not take effect, so the current theory is the latent effecting <60 cooks, which makes sense, considering the name.

Do you mean items beyond your rank?

The best way to test the latent is to attempt a synth 16 levels above your skill with no image support and no other gear on that would modify your crafting skill. The game will let you attempt a recipe that is 15 levels above your skill, but not 16 levels.

This is the classic test which has been used to verify support craft levels for various items.

I got the knife today. From the quest "The Dawn of Delectability" Crystal War Quest. Still trying to figure out what the "Latent Effect" is.
