Here is what nobody tells you. This quest requires HOURS OF WALKING!!! There is no chocobo to use in the past. You don't just "go" to windurst waters [s] and click on door. You first have to unlock one of the 3 main maws, Batallia Downs(H-5) Rolanberry Fields (H-6) Sauromugue Champaign (K-9). If you end up at Sauromugue after clicking on a MAW make sure to travel back into Rolanberry to unlock that maw from the past or you will have to go past gate #3 in garliage to get back to Sauromugue maw. Lets just say you start in Rolanberry [s] Here is how to get to windy which nobody tells you. Rollanberry [s]-> Sauromugue Champaign (S)-> Meriphataud Mountains (S)-> The way is blocked if you want to go south from here so you have to travel into Fort Karugo-Narugo [S] which is found at C-11, D-6, D-8, D-9, L-6, K-11 in Meriphataud Mountains (S) South end of the Fort exits into West Sarutabaruta. You can either do quest for the fort map in Crawlers nest or go here -> http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Fort_Karugo-Narugo_%28S%29/Maps Once you get to Windy make sure to click on the Maw there at West Sarutabaruta (S) (H-9) so you don't have to walk here again in the past. <--I wish I had this info when I started.
whats MAW? lol i've been away from the game for about a year and just startin to play again, so i got alot of catching up to. also, do you have to have the wings expansion in order to do this quest?
Yes you have to have the WoTG expansion pack.

i went to the rhinostery in the past and i got healing herbs quest instead do i need to do that first?

sometimes it says "Retrace cannot be cast on <name of party member>"
whys that?

Yes, you can cast it on yourself. Any spell that says qualifying party members includes you.
so can you not cast retrace on yourself???

This quest is quite simply easy to do if your doing this just for a bit of gil and arent going to lvl BLM at all get it done quick cos i dont see the price of this thing being all that high for long

I started this quest not really knowing what Retrace did. I didn't bother looking at the ungodly AH prices, or anything like that. All I knew was I'm a lvl 75 BLM, and I wanted the latest in BLM magics. Low, and behold; I finally got the damn scroll, used it, casted it, and it took me to the HP in windy waters {s}. I finally took the time to look at the in-game spell description, and that's when I found out it takes you to whichever nation you're serving under for campaign. How cool is that?

You can get this spell from "The Lost Book" quest.
Click on the Rhinostery door at J-9 in the southern part of Windurst Waters (S) to receive a cut-scene.
Go to Giddeus in the present with a Mythril Beastcoin. On the first map there is a patch of grass at G-8 to drop down, go north and visit the Storage Room at G-6 on lower map. You will find Quu Bokye, a Yagudo NPC. Talk to him, and he asks for a Mythril Beastcoin he will give you Leather-bound Book key item when you trade the coin.
Go back to Windurst Waters (S) and return the Leather-bound Book to the Rhinostery door which triggers another cut scene with Yoran-Oran. Now go to the north side of Windurst Waters (S) and click on the door of the Optistery at F-8 for a cut scene with Yoran-Oran and Tosuka-Porika.
Now you gotta get a Lynx Pelt and a sheet of Vellum. Travel to Castle Oztroja (S) to G-8 and click on the ??? to obtain the Key Item Lynx Pelt.Yags are sight so wait for them to turn around. Time to head back.
Trade a sheet of Vellum to Door:Optistery for another cutscene. Vellum can be made with Leathercrafting, bought at AH, or you can go to Crawler's Nest (S) and trade 4 stacks of Rolanberrys at a time (you get more Vellum than you need but i sold them 15k a stack on Diabolos).
Wait one game day (no need to zone), then return to the Optistery for the final cutscene and a Retrace scroll as your reward.

Ok this is odd... Instead of asking for a mythril beastcoin he says "Books are good but silver beastcoins are better! Ack ack ack." And I try to trade a silver beastcoin to him (also tried mythril) and he doesn't do anything.

Thanks alot for this information. I was able to get the scroll today. The hardest part was keeping my sneak and Invis up the whole time i was running to Castle Oztroja [S].
