OJ or Broth, your choice

It's so cheap to make either or recipe, whatever is convenient ingredient-wise works. It does seem easier just to make the broth first though.

i see a lot of people asking about good skill ups for cooking so here are two good forums for skill up information. I'll also include a directional compass.

Good cooking forum

Also good cooking forum

good crafting compass

Hope that helps ^^

P.S. Im level 30 cooking and i found buying bastore sardines from cooking guild and synthing sliced sardines was easiest skill up. Sardines almost always in stock and you don't have to fight in cooking guild for oranges ^^

Why would you need to wait in line for oranges? Just go to Baehu-Faehu in north windy waters, he is right by the gate. Unless in the rare occurence Windy doesn't own Sarutabaruta, you will be able to get an unlimited supply of oranges from him....for cheaper than the cooking guild too =)

Yeah its better if you start off and make a couple Boiled Eggs until cooking lvl 3 and then you can go through a stack of water crystals 10 to 11 times out 12 making orange juice. This has to be the best way to get to 10 though.
anything else
# Feb 27 2005 at 2:57 AM Rating: Decent
is there any item once you reach lvl 10 that is a quick and easy lvl gainer like this one was?
RE: anything else
# Jul 06 2005 at 10:44 AM Rating: Decent
it's big steps but you can just make apple juice til 20 and the pineappple juice to 30 and then melon juice to 40 and then grape to 50 and then yagudo drinks to 60 and then.... I perfer to craft 5 levels over current. Also you can make gil at any level making the GP items for a particular day. Check the item to see if it has Gp value and then store them til the item is requested. I make more gil selling GP items to other cooks than I do from cooking, however to do well in this you will need to learn which items may be needed and store them til the time is right. Regional vendors are also the key to success here and getting stuff like coral fungus before the region is beast owned almost always nets some profit. use region info and find which areas are losing ground for conquest update and then plan accordingly. another example is arrowwood logs from norvallen vendor. when norvallen get owned by beastmen the price of arrowwood rises drastically so making the lumber the week before and holding it can result is 4x the gil for the sale. also for some odd reason the price of water crystals has doubled on fenrir which is still cheap at 2-3 stack but you may want to take that into consideration when skilling up. 10 levels over craft is a lot of breakage. Bait and pet food are good items to make as well (most are wind or earth). avoid the alpha and beta snacks cause those are sold in chocobos for dirt.

I made it to cooking lv 10 from 0 in 3 hrs with this item and I am glad it's now 800 per stack of water and 500 per stack of oranges it was the least exspensive and best to make at the time.My mules are still selling this for 150G per bottle.
RE: lv0-10 choice
# Jun 25 2005 at 12:01 AM Rating: Decent
hah only selling for 150 per bottle i ran around with them in my bazzard selling for twice that and in my pts people bought them off and some asked if i had more to sell i was so proud (this is my only craft lvl 4 :D) sold like 10 of them never lost a synth cuz i did all the right things and i made 2k profit on it cuz i got the crystals for free

Orange juice can be bought at the cooking guild in Windurst Waters. Depending on Your fame and how many times the item has been bought...is how much it will cost. This item can also be crafted starting at lvl 0 crafting. It can bring of crafting skill to 11 then it will be capped. Orange Juice gives you the effect of refresh. Lasting for a minute or two each bottle.

Just for the Record...
# Aug 18 2004 at 11:05 AM Rating: Decent
The best place in Windurst to buy Saruta Oranges is the Taru Merchant near the gate in Windurst Waters. He says (in rhyme) that he sells goods from Sarutabaruta, and he has a hyphenated name which escapes me. He sells them for 32 gil, but after spending a lot of money on repeatable quests to raise my Windy fame to level 4, his price remains the same.

Also, I can make OJ with a very low failure rate at Cooking level 6 & 7 on Watersday and with Moghancement: Water, but without any Synthesis support whatsoever.

Finally, I don't think any of the drinks you can make have +1 versions.

I believe his name is Baehu-Faehu. I was able to get the oranges for 31 gil, so fame is clearly a factor.
Also, about HQs: I've HQ'ed OJ before (gotten the HQ noise and animation), but it still yields just a single bottle of regular OJ, nothing HQ about it.

RE: Just for the Record...

I made Orange Juice starting at level 3 cooking. Hardly any failures at all except on Firesday or Darksday when I tried to make some exceptionals, back when I thought there was a +1 OJ lol. But, skill gains still going strong at level 7 cooking.
Better?
# Aug 02 2004 at 11:17 AM Rating: Decent
is it possible for you to make a better version of this OJ? Example: Grilled Hare/Black grilled hare.

EDIT: Found out you can't >.<

The Price of Orange Juice
# Jul 10 2004 at 11:45 AM Rating: Excellent
Why does orange juice sell at the Bastok AH for less than it costs to make it?

I buy oranges from the vendor in Windhurst (north of the Culinary Guild, by the gate) for 32 gil each. Assuming no failures, and not even counting the price of crystals, it costs me 124 gil to make a bottle of OJ.

Why does it sell steadily at the AH in Bastok for only 100? Is there some cheaper source of oranges that I'm missing? Or some economic force in play that I'm not aware of? Anyone know? Thanks!

A lot of foods cost more to make than to sell. If every food item gave you a profit, then crafting would be no challenge at all. The reason THIS item is particularly cheap is because you can just buy it from NPC vendors.

I have been making carrot broth (I'm lvl 0.7) but as you can see it's been rising really slowly and there's no where to sell them. You say with advanced imaging support I can make these at lvl 0? If I could that'd be great. I could get to lvl 6 and then start making sliced sardines (since those will be pretty much all profit for me). Not only that but my BLM can use them, too. I'm guessing the cheapest place to get them is in Sandy. Which vendor and in which area?

Level listed is not a minimum
# Feb 16 2004 at 10:45 AM Rating: Decent
Just to clear something up for everyone, as this seems to be a common misconception: The cooking level listed is the highest level you can attain while crafting this item. You can attempt to craft anything, but the greater the disparity between your cooking skill, and the items level, the geater the chance you have for failure.

You do NOT need at least 4 cooking to make OJ, I made one at 0 cooking, succeeded, and got no message saying I couldn't do it.

I am sorry but you are incorrect. If you try a recipe more than a a rank (i.e. novice, beginner, ect) or 2 (depending on the skill) it will not allow you to even try it. You will get an message explaining to you.

Furthermore, most of these levels are off. It's usually an observed level - as in "I was able to make this at 6".

And yeah, you aren't allowed to craft any old thing like in Everquest. If you lack a certain level of skill, it won't let you try.

For this item that is incorrect, you need atleast 4 cooking to make them and they raise you to 10. I have just stopped making them
RE: Level listed is not a minimum
# Jan 24 2005 at 9:58 AM Rating: Decent
I was able to raise my cooking skill with these at lvl 1... with no support from mog or guild. But i would suggest grilled hare from 1-7 because they sell well if u set in bazzar and go afk. But from 7-10 these are the shiznit, on a previous character I got 7-10 with 5 stacks of oranges.
where to find them
# Feb 15 2004 at 1:20 AM Rating: Default
there is a store in sandoria named raimbroys grocery in the south of sandoria and u can buy them cheap there and also u dont need lvl 6 to make oj ive been making them up to now lvl 5

You can get the Saruta Oranges from the Culinary Guild in Windurst for 66 gil each.

Or...

You can get this from a nice old lady in Sandoria for a mere 33 gil each.

And I've been making Orange Juice since level 0 (currently level 3). I don't know the timing on this because I'm a thief. I make the OJ and send it Xanatos, my favorite redmage and Dantares, my favorite whitemage. =D
