Braking the rods
# Jan 16 2007 at 9:48 AM Rating: Decent
I have no fishing skill whats so ever, whats the best way to brake these rods so i can fix them and get skills up. What would be the best bait and best place to fish to brake them. I was told Selbina and use the lug worms, but i only got 3 brakes for the 3 hours i was there.
light crystals the easy way
# Apr 26 2006 at 6:31 PM Rating: Decent
whoever said light crystals only dropped off lvl 50+ mobs needs to go and edit that post right away....if your in windurst, go to the west and in one of the trees for the horoto ruins are cardian or whatever they are, two of cups, swords, batons, and coins lay in the area after you walk down the steps, if your a lower lvl, the as you progress you will find threes of the same sort then 4's and so on, they all drop light crystals!! i went in as a lvl 11 blm with a lvl 12 mnk and got 2 stacks in an hour and a half, i didn't even have to use that much mp cuz the lvl 2's are very easy, hope that long as* explination helped

Hmmm... The new patch was just released, and it seems that this is now the best wooden fishing rod designed to catch small fish. Before the patch, it wasn't worth fishing with much else besides Composite, Mithran, or Lu Shang's.

With the new patch, will it be more advantageous to use a rod that isn't designed to catch large fish (such as Composite) while targetting small fish such as Moat Carp?
sweet rod!

I have been using this rod since level 0, equiped with a Sabiki Rig. Not once has it broken on me. I didn't even get a snapped line. The fish I have caught with this combination are Bastore Sardines, Quus, and Yellow Globes. The dock the fishing guild is at is a good place to start. I have also used this with no trouble on both ships (selbina-mhaura and manaclipper), the kazham airship dock (both of them), bibiki bay, and that island you can get to from the manaclipper (the name escapes me...). The sardines sell well in windurst (people doing the quest for fame), currently for about 1000 on Unicorn. Quus dont seem to sell as fast, and the price varries a lot, anywhere from 300 to 1500 on Unicorn. I only recently started catching the globes, and haven't had the chance yet to sell stacks of em.

This rod, equiped with a Sabiki Rig, has taken me all the way from level 0 to level 11, and it's still giving me skill ups (AFAIK, the skill cap for the globes is 17, so we'll see then if it can still be used for skill ups n.n).

i just started ffxi a few weeks ago, i have a lvl20 war. and live in windurst. im having alot of trouble makeing gill as right now im in jueno,
since its the only place i can find good partys (for my lvl). any help would be greatly appriciated in regards to makeing money.

also it seems that many of you are foucusing almost mainly on crafting. i was wondering if theres anyway to craft while also wanting to lvl,
since im a warrior and not just craftsman i also have the added expence of wepons and armor-easily 10k+in gill every few lvls- as a result ive never had more then 12k at once and that income is souly dependent on silk sales at my AH. right now im broke and still even have some lvl 10 equiment :(

dont get me wrong i love the game but its getting harder and harder just to keep up with my lvl in basic stuff, let alone flower pots- 1500 a pice at cheapest in my server-and whatever else.

anyway sorry for the rant. i just wanted to know if anyone could help me get back on my feet...

P.S.// whoever it was on the development team that thought it be a good idea to make chocobo rental fees based on your current gill should be shot-
THE LESS GILL I HAVE THE MORE IT COSTS!?!? >:[
wtf is that?

Well what subject was it supposed to be under?

Chocobo prices have nothing to do with how much gil you have. It has to do with how many other people have rented a chocobo recently, and is partially influenced by your rank and fame.

You're level 20 and still have level 10 equipment? Go do some quests. Find the repeatable ones that you can do for cash to NPCs, like the crawler calculi. You'll earn gil and fame by getting stuff for NPCs and that will lower your store prices.

If you have a subjob, level it and you will get a better chance of crystals. Those would also sell well at the AH.

I hope you have a subjob... you didn't say.

Also, I hope you have taken the time to do some missions for your country. If not, run home and do them now. There are more things to do in the game besides mad rush leveling.

one day on the ride from mhaura to selbina i grabed this rod from the fishing shope on the ship with some lug wormies. just to pass some time, i went up to the stairs where i would no aggro the water monsters and started my job as a mithra fishing lady. i gained about .3 skill befor coming to selbina where i fished with my seek party up for about 5 hr.'s (i was lv. 13thf and went to selbina to lv.). i logged out that night at lv. 2 fishing and and did the samething the next day for about 3 more hr.'s untill someone told me to go to windust to fish. from windust port i made it to lv. 4 fishing without ever breaking this rod!!! after all the hard work at fishing im lv. 13 fishing right now and lv. 21 thf. i can pull in about 8k in moat carp a hr. and spend more time fishing then anything else.

i would start fishing with this rod or the bamboo rod over any other rod b/c of how long they will last
what level alchemy

I have exactly 0.2 Alchemy skill... I have repaired MANY MANY of these rods.

Sometimes... some people... some places... =\

This is a WOODEN fishing pole.
The synthetic poles, like Carbon, and Composite, require Alchemy to repair, or even craft from scratch.

This pole, however, uses (looks at recipe above) Silk Thread and Walnut Lumber, with a Wind Crystal (scratch) or a Light Crystal and broken rod. And woodworking skill, capping at 65 or 63 respectively.

Yes, I am almost Lv 60 Woodworking... so I'm kinda familiar with the crafting system in the game... not to mention 50 Cooking, and 34 Smithing, and various other skills lightly touched [except Alchemy LOL].

Hope this clears it up...

Ok so it can be easily repaired. .... .... .... um , how? heh :)
RE: Repairing Broken Rods
# May 22 2004 at 8:23 PM Rating: Decent
My question is, how do I break them? What's the best combination of bait and location to make it snap often?
RE: Repairing Broken Rods
# Dec 08 2003 at 5:53 PM Rating: Decent
you use a light crystal and some alchemy skill
along with your broken rod. This formula works with all broken rods.
RE: Repairing Broken Rods
# Dec 10 2003 at 10:21 PM Rating: Default
Oh...easily? Light crystals are only the most difficult crystals to obtain. They drop mostly off of level 50+ mobs. It isn't worth using a light crystal to repair a fishing rod. Just buy another.

I don't know how much light crystals cost on your server, but on mine (Siren) they run about 600-700gil per. Most of the higher quality rods will cost you 2000+ gil. Punch in those numbers; not to mention you can buy a batch of dark crystals for about 200gil per and grow your own light crystals with the gardening option in your mog house.....
Yeah it may be easier to just go snatch another rod off the Auction House bidboard, but consider this : What happens when there are none of your favorite type of fishing rod left? Now your stuck standing there with a pocket full of Insect Paste scratching your butt :).
On the flipside, yes repairing rods does require quite a bit of alchemy skill, but raising alchemy is a win-win option IMHO. Think about all those yummy Potions and Hi-potion you can make cheaply. While your comrads get KO'd by that nasty feind that got the jump on your party, You down a potion and live to see another day :)
If your lazy then by all means buy up those expensive fishing rods off the Auction House bidboard, but to those oh ye truely devoted to fishing ,like me , I suggest investing in this Alchemy skill
Sincerely Yours,
The Happy Fisherman

OK, so this newbie is certainly glad to get this information. I agree with last post regarding light crystals and rod expense. For example, a broken carbon rod can be bought on my server for around 1,000, a light crystal for about 500, if you can put the two together, you save somewhere around 500 - 1,500g. But the last post begs the question (at least form those of us without a green thumb), how do you garden light crystals from dark crystals? :)

thanks

yes, I managed to do it once, before I started to keep track of which type of seeds to plant, which crystal to feed and which day to harvest.

FYI, I was able to get 4 light crystals out of it.
