well after maintenence i decided to camp tortoise shield on day one i got kill and no drop. onday 2 i sat around around for 4 hours and didnt see the ****. day 3 i figure maybe he popped early yesterday so go back earlier. no luck. day 4 i think sod this ill go to beadeaux and get me a holy phial andfaerie shield.
got my holy phial in like 10 minutes so quite lucky there and when the nm popped i cast jubaku on it and it used manfont and well everyspell it tried to cast was interupted by paralysis lmao. as for elemental traits i heard a rumour that they can affect summoners spirits pacts. i.e if you have uber earth and cast earth spirit it will cast more. if i find this to be true i might beef up earth a ton lol its cool seeing earth spirit cast refresh on a summoner :D
Can't say I like the name all that much ^^ but the attributes are nice to have. I was fortunate enough to get a nymph shield from the AH for 160k, the Faerie shield sells for 150k.
The def and elemental resists are definitely a plus.. especially in a slot that a black mage wouldn't normally have anything... I personally don't concentrate on def that much as I don't "want" to get hit more than once or twice in a fight.. I'm a nuke junkie.. so I have to restrain myself for the most part..
I know that this is not even a required item. Don't think I am saying that. I have not even owned one myself. However, it is not a terrible item to have. A shield as a BLM is a decent idea. There are now several types available, so you can find some that have more benefit than this one.
The main reason for having a shield as a BLM is for skilling up. Every time you get hit, you have a chance to skill up your shield skill. As a mage (yes, even RDM) shield skill is very hard to raise. Ideally as a mage, you don't take hits. However, most any good BLM will ride line on too much hate to cause the maximum safe damage. In riding that line, you sometimes get hate before the tank gets it back. You get tagged once or twice. These 2 potential hits are 2 potential skillups that you dont get without the shield attached. And you still level EVA while at it.
Post-51, you will have staffs, so you lose this chance after that point. If your shield skill is leveled from another job (WAR, PLD, and THF come to mind) then you don't really need it at all. It is not something that will save your hide. You are not trying skill it up actively.
It is resellable, so you don't really lose any gil on it. Just inventory space. Depends on what you have going on, but I would rather skill when I can, instead of trying at 75BLM to skill shield by tanking someones coffer mob in a skillup party. It cost no extra time to have one equipped while using a wand.
And as for subbing NIN, I think it would be fun to try, but one one will invite you. You lose MP, emergency healing and status healing, you lose sneak all for a little INT or MND that you don't need to function. I got your point, but think you are taking the idea that a shield is not a make or break item a little too far.
I guess I am saying that you should consider it for a skillup reason, but dont go out and spend a week farming for it over leveling for a week. It is great if you can borrow a shield or have the means to buy one.
When your SMN first reaches level 29. Nothing like gaining a little resistance from elemental damage for all elements. It'll help, since SMN don't really have to worry about being beat to death, unless they have a bad tank in the pt. They only have to worry about AOE, or wide -ga spells smashing into them.
Look, This shield is definatly NOT worth getting. I would rather sub NIN and double wield Ereitie Wands. 25% less chance of getting interuptedX2. Also you can use Ninijsu Blink spell. All in all, Blackmage, shield? Worthless unless it gives defence. And that is my two sence.[b]Look, This shield is definatly NOT worth getting. aving +3 to all elements increases the damage done when casting them
keep WHM subbed, wear the shield, and level on
THIS DOES NOT AFFECT THE DAMAGE YOU DO AS BLM. To continue to make this point clear, elemental DEFENSE bonuses have absolutely NO bearing on the damage that you are doing.
The point of this shield is to be upgraded by synth.
Just look at the little symbols near your Job Abilities/Job Traits. It shows an element colour. The stronger your [element]+X, the stronger the ability.
I haven't read anything about the [element]+X increasing Spell's damages, but since they are "Abilities", I guess it does the same.
Anyway, if you want a shield for DEF, just take one of those Lv30 shields. Wether or not you have the right sub, it gives you DEF and it's cheaper than the Faerie Shield. If you believe in what I stated, get the Faerie Shield ...
(And just ask yourself this question : Why would SE makes a shield which can only be worn by classes who can cast spells ... And with the Nymph shield, it was the only one which would be worn with a BLM or a SMN before the Lv30 shields update ... )
I think the +3 vs.... is ONLYdefence. Why? Because if you look at the elemental symbols underneath your equipment on the equip screen, the normal number is 0. It will increase if your armour increases it. So if you are only wearing the Faerie Shield, all the numbers at the base of the equip screen will be 3.
If you then cast a bar<element> spell, the corresponding elemental symbol's number will increase. However we all know that bar spells only cause elemental resistance. So if the bar spells directly raise those numbers that must mean that those numbers represent elemental resistance.
Also if the bar spells give elemental attack, BLM around Vana'diel would cast barthunder then spam Thundaga III and rape monsters because of their thunder element attack being increased by 70~ points
The conclusion is that the Faerie Shield increases your elemental resistance only.
If there was a statistical elemental attack gauge which was affected by equipment or spells, S-E would tell us.
Why would S-E want to make a shield like this? Beats me. The most practical use I can find for this is for extra elemental resistance for BCNM fights where things can go haywire and anyone can get hit by a spell.
Actually, that's incorrect. +[element] reduces the chance that spells of that type will be resisted. If you've ever done the ENM "Fire in the Sky", you know the 1st thing you do is cast Barfira. Why? 4/5ths of the time, Razon's 1st 2 self-destructs do 0 damage, and that 1/5th of the time it's not even lethal. It's so that when you use fire-based attacks (Inferno, Fire II, etc.), you won't do below-average damage and set him off without even denting his bar (fire attacks set him off, but are the only way to do sufficient damage). It's the 3rd level on the strengths/resistances. 1st is INT/MND. Then is Elemental, Enfeebling, Divine, etc. Then is the element of whatever the spell is. So yeah, this shield is worthwhile to a pre-stave BLM. Not required, but good. And to the BLM/NIN, you are a total moron. 1st off, you shouldn't be getting hit. 2nd off, you're supposed to dual-wield normal wands if you do that, that give INT/MND+X. And lastly, you don't do BLM/NIN for parties. You lose way too much INT from /WHM for it to be of any use, so you have a much lower damage cap, and the chance you'll be resisted goes up by about 200%.
Actually, that's incorrect. +[element] reduces the chance that spells of that type will be resisted.
This is amusingly wrong.
It's your own personal resistance. That's it. There is a reason why BLMs don't demand barspells to improve their casting.
And, yes, the resistances on this shield are exactly the same as you should get from a barspell, on much much wimpier. Those stats on this shield do nothing more than making you ever so slightly more likely to resist an elemental spell.
I tested it with DRK when I got my snipers (-20 dark resistance each).
I had capped dark magic skill, so I know that wasn't the problem.
I was /WAR, so obviously my INT wasn't very high, but the test rules that out as a cause.
I don't remember the actual results (it was a LONG time ago) but it was enough of a difference where I'd say I'd be resisted at LEAST 60-70% of the time with snipers on, and only 10-20% without them on. I had a seperate macro for my rings outside of my TP/WS sets just so I could take them in and out for magic casting without blinking in and out (which gets annoying -.-;).
EDIT: Thought I should add that the main reason why bar-ra spells aren't used is because a BLM isn't using JUST one element. The MP spent in casting the bar spell is wasted MP for just one cast, and using it for magic bursts isn't very effective either because a MB is already difficult to be resisted. Just imagine either a party where the BLM is only casting ice-based spells because the WHM gave him barblizzard (gimping his damage)...now imagine a party where the BLM is casting normally, but is calling out what element he's using next so the WHM can bar that element (wasting the WHMs MP and decreasing his effectiveness in the party). It is a waste of time/MP unless it is absolutely IMPERITIVE that the spell doesn't get resisted, and 99.9% of the time those spells are either sleep or stun, which are both dark based and therefore have no bar-element counterpart. An example of the other .1% of the time where an elemental spell other than dark/light based needs to be unresisted is illusrated in a previous post.
Actually if it was true it'd probably be they cast Barwater. If you look the little dot next to the spells is the ele they're weak to and for the ele staffs the number for the ele the ele of the staff is strong against.
Anybody who needs this shield on Bahamut let me know, I'll camp it for you. I owned this NM in about 5 min...not even as RDM/NIN. Don't bother buying it, i'll get it for you for free. Funniest thing you'll ever see is a NM drop Manafant while they're silenced.
Personaly i think that if u can buy it its worth the money atm it is 120k on ifrit server but it makes my 34 blm look cooler and if your only problem is low shield skill trane a pld thf war or any other jobs that can use shields. I only had to get to lvl 11 pld and my blm already gets 22 shield skill and its not caped on my pld so there is much more potential.
Ok I understand that not every job has BAR spells. However the amount of resistence givin from this shield is almost nothing. Currently at lvl 50 my RDM can cast a barspell, and with my high enhancing magic, I have somthing like 60+ or so to the givin element (I dont remember I am at work lol). Is it just me or do the resistences on equip bought do almost nothing. Again I have bar spells so elementally resistant items dont peak my interest, yet I still fail to see why people pay so much for this. Ok so its a shield that a BLM and WHM can equip.....it has no def....and lets be honest only a slim chance that you will block a hit. I know your shiled skills arent lvled you BLM's/WHM's.
Well, first of all, WHM can use shields all throughout their career, so their shield skill shouldn't be quite as low as BLM, but this is the first shield that BLM gets to use. All those elemental resistances means not only less damage from elemental attack, but enfeebling attacks as well. You'll have more of a chance to resist sleep, paralyze, blind, etc., or at least not have to deal with the effects for as long.
I have seen this shield going for 100k or more in the Jeuno AH, which I feel is absolutely ridiculous. As a level 30 BLM I would love to finally be able to use a shield, but I can't imagine paying that much for something with no defense.
So, basically, good shield? Yeah, for black mages, but everyone else can find something better. Worth buying? Nah, just gather together some high level LS members and go kill the NM for it
I saved up the 50k to purchase this shield on Midgardsormr, and let me say it was definitely worth the money. This thing has saved me more than once and is especially nice when monsters have aggroed me while I was resting, only to see "Turanole blocks the attack with his shield." Evading damage even just once can be a life saver for a BLM. Just remember to face the monster when fighting and resting or it won't do you any good.
As for the person saying BLM don't get Shield Skill, FYI. I please, ask you to go to your FFXI Main Menu, open up Stats, then, Combat Skills, you will see you have Shield Skill as Black Mage. Hope this helps, and the shield rules! C'mon, this is the first BLM useable Shield in the game! I loooove it!
BLM does not get the shield skill. I confirmed this myself just before posting. A simple test: change main job to BLM, support job to MNK (or any other job that is known not to have shield skill). Go to combat skills, and shield doesn't show up. The reason for the confusion is that a BLM/WHM will have shield skill from the WHM sub. However, the skill will cap at the normal level that it would for your WHM sub, which will be about half of what it would if the shield skill came from your BLM main. Based on my experience and talking to a few people, skill-up is also much more difficult with a skill from a support job.
It's kinda strange, but there are a number of other items that can be used by a job that doesn't have the skill for it. Most of them seem to be fairly useless, but the BLM-usable shields are one exception.
This one, though, I think is a waste of gil unless you have all the best equipment for every other slot. I'd much rather see a BLM spend that money on INT, then stand back and -avoid- getting hit with elemental AOEs in the first place.
actually, you cant even skill something up that is an ability that can ONLY be used as your sub job. The only skills that can be skilled up are those pertinent to your main job.
So, for example, if you were to go RDM/MNK (for whatever reason), your guarding skill would never increase as you fight, however, it might still be possible to "guard" an attack as if you were a monk.

RDMs do not get Staff-skill, but can wield a good portion of the staffs. (Usually the 'pole' subtype is not usuable by RDM, but the 'staff' subtype is)
I saw this in the Jueno AH on carbuncle for 60K two days ago, didn't buy it. Came back, it was still there. I bought it. I have to level my WHM a bit to weild it, but I'm really looking forward to it!
Yeah, i've been saving up for thie shield for a few days. I've made about 40K selling silver ingots and killing quadavs, but i've spent it all on other equipment. It costs 100K on my server.
