what lvl to lockpick???
# Jan 14 2007 at 7:34 PM Rating: Decent

what lvl to lockpick???
# Jan 14 2007 at 8:01 PM Rating: Decent
ok, easy **** to pick, but then again im 65. waited there for like 30 mins, ran back to same spot and found the coffer, first Thief's Tool got it. GL finding the coffer tho, it definately was the longest part of this mess.

Hide drops hate from certain mobs that aggro and track by sight only, Goblins, Yagudo, and Cockatrice to name a couple(also the Greater Bird type mobs if i remember correctly). If you are fighting something, and Hide, and see the message 'the (mobs name) has spotted you' then you cannot hide from them succesfully, even though you might still be invisible.

SATA + Hide is a trick every pre 60 THF should know on mobs that you can successfully hide from in order to put hate on the main tank if a second voke isn't available under the circumstances. Disengage from the mob, or back away if possible, move behind the tank, and ready SATA. Then Hide and attack.

On duration: Hide is a free invis for THF every 5 minutes. I personally have used just hide to move about when lazy /cheap /too poor for nin tools. the Hide duration is nice for this. I generally get about 2 mins on Hide, weather and day seem to effect the time though. (Sneak invis and deodorize are all wind based, as are all THF abilites, according to the color)

HP and STR can obviously be explained and enjoyed.

+10 resistance to earth I'm finding particularly useful against Worms while skilling up throwing and xbow. Makes their spells hit for alot less it seems.

On a different subject, all the pouches make me look particularly thiefy I think :P

So no, not a useless peice of AF like others said...

Added the SATA + Hide info just because it seemed important to me to spread that. Seen too many THFs not know they could.

Oh and invis 'stacks' it wears the moment you do something, so if that something is recasting and invis, you blink in and out and won't aggro. sneak and deodorize do not 'stack' in that manner however.

You can also successfuly and effectivly use sata-hide on everymob (not sure about truesights, but not realy an issue pre lvl 60) by not getting hate before the use of it. Its very nice especialy becouse from 45-60 u will be fighting mostly scent tracking mobs.

Its great if your not pulling and realy great if you get an add. Then before engaging satahide, engage viperbite. As long as you havent attacked the mob it will be successful on those scent tracking mobs no matter what direction they are facing.

Though you probably won't be using this in parties that doesn't mean it is a bad piece of gear by any measure. If you can't afford a Scorpion Harness, there is no shame in using AF body for solo and farming. As far as party setup goes, I recommend either Rapparee Harness or Scorpion Harness (if you have tons of +acc gear already, Rapparee is superior *gasp*, and besides, due to dirty gil buyers R/EX gear is cooler anyways) and then macro in Black/Flora Cotehardie before SATA (you should have 2 entire macros devoted to melee/TP building gear and SATA gear).

Obtaining this piece isn't so bad as long as you sub RDM or WHM. Bring some melon drinks for times when you simply cannot afford to heal and be sure to keep up your invis and sneak. I recommend using Skeleton keys exclusively. If the coffer isn't up, give yourself some time to become accustomed to Castle Zvhal; if you have competition here it will certainly be beneficial for you to confidently know your way around. Scout out safe places to heal and keep your MP above 27 at all time. I obtained it at level 50 after using only 1 Skeleton key. Good luck!

My first job was thf. lvled it to 45 n then took rng. got rng to 66 and started partying in bibiki bay. now, i make a pretty decent income from Th2 on silk n such, but i watched a theif in my pt steal 800k in gold beastcoins in one party session. well, needless to say, i went back to theif just for this. im now lvl 54 and figured id get all my AF done with.... this piece sucks. the only thing id use it for is maybe if i subbed WAR and needed hide to get thru an area undetected.

btw, i love hide. steal+ hide and ive already made about 200k off the gobs in bibiki bay.

u dont need hide to last longer than 1/2 a second, much liek camouflage, it has a tendency to start to wear right after u use it. doesnt matter cuz uve already lost aggro, even if ur still surrounded, just use tonko or prism powders.

on top of that, i already bought my SH, which is the 2nd best peice for theif, next only to dragon harness at 72? so when i get this thing, itll be becuase im bored and ran to the castle to help some friends with dark spark and only because it looks cool on mithra.

P.S. even if u dont have enough $$ for SH, the black coterieharde or w/e its called is better than this. lvl 59 piece of armor, so ull be stuck with brig for another lvl, but ull never use this AF in EXP pt anyway.

Hide doesn't suck. This AF sucks. I have NEVER used it. And it looks flat out disturbing on Elvaan Males.

Hide & Tonko makes the craziest invisible combo!
If you haven't noticed yet, you have to remove invisible effect before you cast it again on yourself. BUT! Hide isn't really invisible so when the game tells you invisible wears off: Use Hide! Instant new effect of invisible! When hide is about to wear cast Tonko again!

Go home....if you are rank 6, and *know* that invisible doesnt stack...then you just need to quit playing.

Personally, I believe the best place to get thf af information is http://www.bvvp.com/gaming/ffxi/thfaf.html
So far I only have the dagger, but from what I've read in this walkthrough, I can tell that it's very in-depth and should be looked into by any thf looking to acquire af gear.

Gettin this coffer was extremly easy for me!!! After killin Dark Sparx i decided to stick around and do some coffer huntin. did a /sea all and only 5 ppl in the building. Spotted the coffer in the first place i decided to look! I got lucky i guess... cause im always hearin about mimics and stuff. but i got it on my first try with regular Thief's Tools. (used 5, but whatever gets the job done lol) well usin famke's AF guide help'd big time! But as soon as i poped the coffer and got the vest, i was spotted by a demon... 2 swipes and defeated, Ghetto Warp!, picked up Gloves and Vest in one swoop! IMO Its best to do this coffer by yourself (Especially if your a thf!) just sneak and invis yourself, that way you only worry about yourself instead of stoping for others in bad spots.

Don't any of you think this is one of the worst AF parts for a thf? Hide sucks and it's every 5 min. Most of the mobs in the game is by sound and NM have super eye so they can see threw hide.

I dunno, I like Steal + Hide on certain Beastmen. Its better than camouflage. Its also been reported Hide works on Scent tracking monsters as long as its raining or if you cross running water(river, stream).

Yes, it certainly does. Normallly Hide doesn't work on Orcs since they track by scent, but one time I got aggroed while doing G3 in Davoi, and it started raining, so I used Hide and lost all the Orcs chasing me.

Hide sux? hmmmm ... must not know how to use it right. i for one love it, running up to a high lvl gob or yag.... hit steal and mug then hide bam!... no more aggro and you run off with a gold beastcoin ^^

just dont try it on a quadav >.>; bad news bears. Best thing to do with that is flee away, then hit up a sneak oil, deodorizer, then smash your hide macro...

If you don't want to take the chance at getting a mimic, the key for this thing isn't too hard to come by. Last night me and some members in the LS went there to grab a Coffer key for one of the PLDs and a Cellar key for the BLM, as well as do M12. We got the PLDs coffer key in like 2 battles, and I said since we got that so fast if they would mind till we got another so I could come with my THF for his AF (have THF and SAM at 58 and I went to help as my SAM since SAM pawns Demons =P). We got another key in about 2 battles again. I also ended up grabbing my SAM testimony, which is good since I'll most likely be taking SAM all the way to 75.

The message of the story is to help in skill-ups or coffer key parties. Or something like that.
RE: key
# Oct 16 2004 at 12:27 PM Rating: Decent
Good moral. I was helping with a key there after about 3 hours of Castle Oztroja keys. It was just waiting for me at the key camp =D. I asked if i could go pick it after the room was cleared they all said sure. Opened it with just 1 thieve's tool and immediately donned my new vest.
Had been wearing brigandine for about 15 lvl >.>
So I would like to emphasize the moral of the story: Help others and good things happen to you! =D
The coffer room was down one of the big hole things..make sure to land on the platform!

as of the june 28th update, this just became far more useful...
Sneak Attack will work from anywhere with Hide in effect.

longer Hide = maybe enough time to pull off 2 SATA?
i knew there had to be a reason for this ^_~

actually if u try to do the SATA with hide u need to use SATA first then use Hide. the second u attack u will lose hide. This will help just like normal. if u get in a bad spot and need to use Hide to get away.

Artifact - Rogue's Vest
http://vnboards.ign.com/The_Thief/b22544/65415935/?6
This is a rare ex item. You have to get it yourself from Castle Zvhal Baileys you cannot get it from the AH.
You can pick the coffers with Skeleton keys (better success rate with these which you will need) however make sure that you have a scroll of instant warp and 2hr up incase a mimic spawns when trying to pick the coffers.
Coffer locations are here..
http://www.speakeasy.org/~sticks/ffxi/treasure/Fr_Castle_Zvahl_Bailes.html
What you need to do is drop down the holes (map2) from the above section of these coffers (map3) onto the ledges and then go look into the rooms.
To get to map 2 from the zone you run up (sneak and invis) take the first right turn you get to and follow it around to map 2.
(F-8 Map 2) is the zone to Zvhal Keep so if you have any agro you can flee to that point (not with mimic though). Make sure you use sneak and invis. Demons and Eyes from what ive seen need sneak.....the bestmen orcs etc need invis.
Castle Zvhal Baleys zone can be found in Xarcabard up the top of the map.
I hope that information helps someone...took me a bit to work this out while dodging monsters.

Both Demons and Ahriman react to sight, but the Ahriman attack on sound too. If you keep your distance you can get by them with invis alone. Orcs attack on sight too. If you're a thief going in here you have the advantage of being able to use Hide on the Demons and Ahriman also, but Orcs can't be shaken as easily. I'm not sure how hide works on Ahriman, since they react to sound also, but it does.

Stigger, why do you think so many thieves wear an Aketon, Blue Cotehardie or War Aketon instead? Our AF body is.....kinda sucky. Aketon is FAR more useful, but not cheap either.

The AF is great for soloing with thf. You get more def/str/hp with it, and boosts to your skill. For xp party I'd still use :

Body : Brigandine +1
Legs : The AF.
Hands : Custome Gloves (AF if not hume)
Feet : Leaping Boots
Head : Emperor's hairpin

This would get you more SaTa damage, but wearing that instead of full AF for farming/soloing will really hurt you. Can't wait for AF... (Starting post 50 next week :D )

Atk and Str are really good attributes also, if you want to do more dmg. A Swordbelt helps me more than a Royal Knight's Belt. And everyone loves HP. ;)

Basically, if you have the rest of the AF, you have plenty of dex and agi already. :)
