I've seen bits and pieces of the entire Carbuncle Mitts "quest" all over, but never all of them together. The post below is my attempt at a completely thorough walkthrough in everything you need to know in how to get these ever-elusive mitts. It was originally written for my LS, so in a couple spots it may sound odd cause of this. Enjoy.

Why Carbuncle Mitts are Nice:
Mitts add +14 to mp, and have a hidden effect that reduces Carb's perpetuation cost by 50%. With the right configuration, you have Carbuncle out with no MP loss.

There are 3 main steps, the 1st one must be done PRIOR to the actual party/alliance fight.

1. Get an offering
2. Get a Prelate Key
3. Fighting the Crimson-Toothed Pawberry

-------Getting the Offering-------

General Info:
This is called an Ugglepiah Offering. To get this, you'll either solo it or have one other person with you. It's really smart idea to go in pairs as will be described below. It's not really something you can get bring in a full party for because it's a two hour pop, so only one person in the party could get it every 2 hours. If multiple people want it, just add 2 hours to when you found it, and go again at that time.

Preparation:
- It's suggested you have a character that can cast Blink and/or Stoneskin. This is due to the unavoidable aggro of the mobs near this item.
- If you don't have sneak or invisible, a stack of prism powders and a few silent oils is required. Even if you have invisible, a few prism powders are still required.
- If you don't have the spell warp, a warp scroll is recommended.

Directions to the Place where this Offering is available:
The offering is in the Temple of Ugglepiah. Head in the direction of the Temple of Ugglepiah in Yhoator Jungle. Don't enter through the main entrance on the map. If you look on the Yhoater map, you'll see a Bloodlet Spring landmark north of the temple, and just east of that you can zone into the Den of Rancor from Yhoater Jungle. If you want a detailed look in how to get there, click HERE for a map

Once inside, simply follow the right wall for like 2-3 minutes. You'll need to cast sneak or use a silent oil to get past the pucks, but nothing else is required here. The Lizards are all non-aggro. DO NOT FALL in the holes.... death is there.

You'll eventually zone into the temple via the back entrance. Now, if you follow the left wall, you'll quickly (as in like 15 seconds) come to a hallway with 4 rooms, 2 on either side. There is a ??? mark in one of the rooms, that spawns once every 2 hours (respawns, that is, after someone else gets it). This ??? is the Offering. All you have to do is click on it to recieve the offering. A rough sketch in where these pops are is Located Here

What makes this a pain is the tonberrys aggro by sight, even lvl 75 people, and the Pots and Iron maidens aggro by magic. This means casting Invis isn't a good idea unless you're by the entrance, far away from magic aggro mobs. To even see the ???, you have to actually go into the room and tab around. You won't see the ??? unless you are in the room, which almost always has a tonberry. To open this door, you have to drop invis, which means instant aggro unless the tonberry *happens* to be looking away. The best tactic is to come with one other person. Between the two of you, you should have sneak, invisible, and Blink, as well as some prism powders. The two person tactic shines when it comes to opening the doors. One person takes their invisible off and opens the doors from the side (not straight on the door where the tonberry might aggro you). The other person stays invisible and walks in, then Tab's everywhere to see if the ??? is there. If not, the other person should reopen the door to let you out. Repeat for all doors. If the ??? IS there, take off invis, get it, and run like mad for the zone(or warp). If you get aggro, simply zone to the Den of Rancor.

If you're solo, the process is similiar, but far riskier. Since you're alone, you must drop invis and enter each room while visible (you won't have enough time to put on prism powder, and that would get expensive anyway). If ya get aggro, zone to the Den of Rancor. The Blink and Stoneskin should be enough to protect you until ya zoned, 80% of the time. Expect to die a few times with this method.

There are 2 other rooms that you can see on the map, that have a chance of containing the ???, but are more difficult to reach and also run away from if aggroed. To get to these 2 rooms, continue down the hallway, and you'll reach what looks like a dead end, but is actually a hidden door that you can click, and it opens. Do the two person method for this too, so one can entire while invisible and tell the other when all the mobs have turned away so that they also can enter. Inside this large room is another door in the far right corner. If you can make it through to this door and open it, you'll be in another hallway with 2 doors on the right. There's nothing in this hallway that aggroes by sight, so ya don't need to worry as much. Just don't walk right in front of the doors as the tonberries inside can see through the doors. These two doors possibly contain the ???.

--------Getting the Key------------

I've read articles that said this item isn't required if you know a trick, but during my own experience, I failed to be able to do the trick. I believe it was something that SquareEnix has changed so that you MUST have the key. Even so, information on the trick is provided below if you wish to try.

The key is only dropped by Tonberry Stabbers and Tonberry Choppers (Choppers are found outside). Fairly rare drop, so plan to hack quite a few tonberries to get it.

*Warning, May Not work Any longer* If you don't have a key, there's a little trick you can use, and that's to aggro an enemy on the other side of the door. When they come to get you, they'll open the door for you. Tonberrys will aggro to you through the door or magic pots will aggro through the door if you use magic, if close enough.

--------Fighting the Crimson-Toothed Pawberry-----------

Preparation:
- Everyone Meets in Kazham
- Set HP in Kazham!
- Anyone that has Tonberry Hate, especially Tanks, must reset this prior to this NM Hunt. Otherwise, Everyone's Grudge causes massive damage.
- Everyone MUST have the Offering if you want to get the Carbuncle Mitts. If you just want to help, no Offering is required.

Team Makeup:
Anyone below lvl 65 will be fairly worthless for attacking. As such, these people should stay far away from the battle. People that are lvl 60-65 can try to help with cures/buffs, and possibly some nukes, but anyone below lvl 60 is better to have just sit on the stairs outside the room. This is because of the AoE attacks will kill or nearly kill them every time.
- BRD 75 is extremely useful with Light Carol (as will be shown further)
- BLM 70+ for strong nukers, and Sleep II
- WHM 70+ for strong cures
- PLD 70+ for massive tanking
- SMN 46+ for Earthen Ward and Blink, one for each party as a minimum
- At least a total of 4 or 5 70+ characters.
- If 4 70+ people can't be found, nearly a full alliance is needed, with 12 or more of them being 65+.

Directions to the Crimson-toothed Pawberry:
- Follow These Maps, Map 1, Map 3, Map 4 in that order. Between Map 1 and 3, you will reenter Yhoator Jungle. Simply do a giant U turn, staying left, you'll reenter Temple of Uggalepih on Map 3.
- On Map 3, Trade the Prelate key to the door shown and the granite door will open to Map 4.
- Beware of all the tonberries behind the Granite Door where you need the Prelate Key. Don't rush.
- There are around 5 tonberries in the final room that you need to kill as you'll be fighting the Crimson-Toothed Pawberry here. Once the room is clear, 1 person trades their Ugglepiah offering to the ??? here and it'll spawn.

Preparing to Fight Crimson-toothed Pawberry once at location:
- Buff Everyone with Protects, Shells, Light Carol, Stoneskin (summoner w/ party version), Blink (summoner w/ party version), etc.
- Lower level people should be far back, down the stairs about half way is a fairly safe spot before the Pawberry is popped.
- If a lower level person is using their offering to do the force pop, be ready to tractor them, raise them or whatever, If their HP is below 600-700, they will die.
- Decide what everyone's job is.

Fighting the Crimson-Toothed Pawberry:
He comes into existance already having carbuncle out, and he immediately does a searing light. He uses Carbuncles 2hr on you immediately and since this is an AoE everyone gets hurt. It's a very wide AoE as well, not the standard size summoners have. It's also why Light Carol is needed as the damage caused from Searing Light drops drastically. After this, the PLD will pull the Pawberry to the far side of the room, so future Searing Lights won't hit the mages. The Pawberry will also summon a random spirit to attack as well, so he will have Carbuncle and a spirit out. Having a high level bard to sleep these extras is wise. Once you kill the Pawberry, Carbuncle and the Spirit die as well, so ignore them.

Misc:
The Mitts are a 100% drop, so you will get them everytime. The Pawberry will also drop gil, and randomly drop other items like tonberry coats, lanterns, and a light spirit pact.

The ??? for the Pawberry takes 15 minutes to respawn. As such, the room will constantly need to be recleared depending on how fast you kill the him. I found that our party had to clear out the room every Pawberry fight. Be prepared to sleep them if they pop in mid NM battle.

That's it

Do you need multiple keys if you're going to fight multiple times? Is it ok for just one person to have the key to get in, then wait out the respawn times?

I found out the answer for this one for sure. If you party has multiple members who have the offering only 1 person needs to have the key to enter the room. You just stay in that room after the first NM kill for 15 minutes for the next to respawn.

The trick involving getting aggro through the door does indeed work, happened the other day when the RDM cast Refresh and aggroed a pot on the other side.

....Make sure the Manipulator NM is on the other side of the room before you try. -.-;

Vissi's right about the aggro trick as far as not wasting time goes. We've done this twice and you can get aggroed through the door, but it can take a long time. There's a few magic pots and Tonberries wandering around on the other side of the door. If you're lucky, one of them will be close to the door when you get there.

That doesn't happen often though; we ended up sitting next to the door tabbing around for at least a half-hour both times. Alas, even the smallest of Tarutaru can't squeeze through the gap between the double door. And if you're going without a key, don't ***** around waiting for the Manipulator to leave the area. If you get aggroed through the door, you'll need to cast spells on the other side, either to keep people from dying or to Sleep all the friends your aggroer will probably have. The Manipulator can hear you cast through the door and he will come to kill you. This almost wiped out our first run, and it caused most of us to die at least once. We got lucky: for some reason, he lost interest after killing a few of us. If you have a strong enough party to kill the Pawberry, you can take the Manipulator easily. It dropped the Hard Shield both times we killed it, which is nice, and it's something to do while you're waiting for aggro.

I strongly suggest you get a Prelate Key simply to save your mob of Pawberry hunters the time and trouble. The Tonberries that drop the Prelate Keys are easy to kill with a healer and a decent tank (preferably one that will tank the Zilart Tonberry fights: the hate reset quest isn't cheap). You could kill them while waiting for the Offering to respawn. Tonberry Coats, Light Crystals, and the occasional Ninjutsu scroll help make it worth the time.

Just to be clear. This trick MAY work, odd's are it won't. Get a Prelate Key before you start your trip into Temple of Uggalepih. Save yourself some time and trouble.

+14 mp doesnt sound like much but you really dont get anythign better till the +15 mp in AF and you need ANY +mp you can get....a smn w/o mp is utterly useless...well unless your 2hr is up

Its not for the +14MP, but for the -1 Perpetuation and Carbuncle cost -4.
Once you get to lvl 51,
Light Staff + Carbuncle Mitts + Auto Refresh +1 = Free Carbuncle
No MP is taken while you have Carbuncle out.

Not to mention the fact that these could be quite helpful for lvl 20 avatar battles, but unless you "leech" these from high level friends you might as well do the lvl 60+ avatar battles and get Fenrir, too, because leeching is the only way to get these without already being a high enough lvl to do the avatar fights in a party. :(

damn you SE...

Then again, it makes sense that you can't get these easily as a lvl 20 SMN because for equipment with this kind of power, you really should have to earn it... :)
RE: I am agthering a group for these.
# Oct 21 2004 at 5:46 PM Rating: Default
Well first off: I am not "leeching" them from high-leveled friends because they eather have offered to help or want them also.
Second: "Leeching" isn't the only way to get a high-leveled party to help you with the lvl 65+ battles.
Third: "Leeching" would most likely be the only way to even get a party for Fenrir.
Fourth: These mitts DON'T make the lvl 20 solo battles any easer because all your MP will go back down to 0 anyways once you use the 2hr therefor the mitts don't help (I have won all those battles on my first or second try, I am still working on Leviathian), it is just how good you are on timeing.
Fith: I have earned my friends and they are willing to help me therefor i did "earn" the right to have them.
I am sorry if you feal that way about stiff like that without thinking about all of it...
