Hidden effect

I know there's the hidden effect of the staff...to boost Darkness spells. (All of the staffs improve spells of their type by ~15%).

I've read that this helps Sleep, Drain, and Aspir, but can someone confirm that it also helps Bio, Blind, and Dispel?

I bought this for my RDM after a few BCNM battles and it is one of the best investments a mage can make. Even with Convert and Refresh, RDM can get low on MP especially when you have to Refresh 3 other people (PLD, WHM, BLM) and debuff. I get a few tics to heal between pulls and that means I get about +30 MP for every battle, sometimes more, depending on the length of pull. Even with the great stats on this staff, I use it for nothing more than healing. I carry a Crimson Blade (lvl 49, DMG 28, DLY 231, MP +10, INT +5)to use during battles and for casting, since the INT +5 with the sword is way better than the +1 from the staff. This is an item that you'll use for good, so pick it up as soon as you can. I also agree that it is almost expected for a lvl 51+ mage to have one, since every mage I've seen attain lvl 51 immediately gets asked if he has one. If you are a BLM or WHM, keep a wand on you as well and write a macro to change gear between heals (i.e. /equip main "Dark Staff", and /equip main "Solid Wand") because the wands give you much more MND and INT boosts when casting.

BTW - They go for 175-200k on Shiva

worth it

this staff is expensive!!!!! but in the end it is worth each gil. i got to say, i am a blm lv 60 and til that lv lots of ptys didnt ike the idea of me not having this staff.
just bought it and it is great!! all mages should get it! wasting 300-400 mp in Mb is a lot and need this staff to heal up mp.

This Staff saved my RDM butt on many occasions. Definitely recommended. I DO get to heal. refresh at the begining, heal after mob dies, and begin refreshing as soon as another is pulled. I keep my party members happy and even get compliments. and RDM CAN heal in a PT.

i got a Ice staff for 12k off a friend
then did lots of BCNM 40 and picked up this staff and a light Staff for 100k each. Best investment I made
especially since both are nearing 200k now on the Fenrir Server :-\
Avatar Perpetuation

Something I just noticed about avatar costs is that when you have the wrong staff out, your avatar cost increases.

I had carbuncle out on the boat, and it was costing me 4mp/tic with my dark staff out, and 2mp/tic with my ice staff out.
RE: Avatar Perpetuation
# Feb 04 2005 at 3:29 PM Rating: Decent
that is because carbuncle is a light avatar and gets negative affect from the dark staff

Denielle you're wrong in some sense, PLD should have one as that would be a letdown also.
Dark Staff and the point of the matter.

From what I have read on everyone's posts so far, a few of you don't understand the true point of this staff.

The Dark Staff is not entirely meant to be the main weapon you use, it is almost completely meant to be used when "/heal"ing. Any mage at level 51+ should buy one of these. If you are not a mage, and just have MP (PLD, DRK) then you are not expected to dish out the gil for this item. But if you are a mage (WHM, BLM, SMN, RDM*not completely expected because of Refresh and Convert) you are going to need to get one, because many parties will invite you thinking that you already have one, and if you do not, most parties will be rather dissapointed. They wont kick you out, cause that's a bit drastic, but it will be a letdown.
#REDACTED, Posted: Nov 24 2004 at 4:45 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) [Gold][/Gold] i have a question would a BLK/DRK OR DRK/BLK BE EFFECTIVE BECAUSE I SEE GOOD SPELLS FOR BOTH THAT COULD GO TOGETHER.
# Dec 07 2004 at 2:47 AM Rating: Good

No. DRK is a melee class that has spells that can enhance it, but adding BLM will only give you a marginal increase to your MP pool, which is unnecessary, since if you need MP you can simply use Aspir to grab MP from the mob. You would be much better suited to subbing WAR to DRK, since it will give you STR and VIT that BLM will not, and other benefits such as Provoke, Defender, Berserk, Warcry, etc.

Subbing THF when DRK hits 30 will give you Sneak Attack, which can also be good.

As for BLM/DRK, again, not a good idea. As a BLM, you're expected to stand back and cast, not melee. DRK gives you nothing. WHM is the best sub, as it gives you spells that will allow you to backup cure in an emergency and a good MP boost.

BLM and DRK are varations on a theme, but don't go well together.

I find this to be the essential item for farming. While healing an extra 10mp per heal. This equals 1 happy farming paladin.

well.. i think that it would be a useful staff depending on what kind of rdm you are. if you do Weopon skills its not very useful. but if you do magic bursts from afar i think it's a great thing to have~

not all mages need this
# Nov 13 2004 at 5:53 AM Rating: Default
maybe it's just me, but this staff would seem rather pointless for a rdm. the + 1 mind is nice for debuffs, but it doesn't counter the +5 int and +10 mp of the crimson sword. and while i agree that the extra mp while resting is even nicer, i can't remember the last time i got to rest during a party. rdms will use refresh and convert to keep their mp up, not med time. anyone have any bonuses i haven't thought of?

Im a 50SMN/25WHM...friend has a Dark Staff that he is gonna let me use...the +10 MP while healing is gonna be AWESOME!!!...im already getting +21 a heal (an added +1 because of my Seer's Tunic +1) and with this would bring me to a total of +33 a heal...that, and my Auto-Refresh, stacked with our RDMs Refresh is gonna OWN!!!...no down time on my end...i will miss the MP boost from my Kukulcan's Staff...but hell with that...im also saving up some gil for a Light Staff(seeing as how i am main healer in a pt)...This staff is HIGHLY reccomended if you are a mage...that +10MP will save your pt alot of time inbetween pulls...
Get this now

Just picked mine up for 110k on Shiva.
Also picked up an Ice Staff for about 35k.

If you are a BLM, buy these two staves!! I fished all weekend to get the cash but definitely worth it.

Oh and as someone else pointed out: If you have mp, get this staff!

oh btw i bought this staff for 130k on Bismark. No mobs drop this and you must craft it. Only i STRONGLY recomment not crafting these staffs. the materials cost more then the staff is worth. However if u craft a ++ staff then u triple your money.. its kind of a gamble =/

I think i might buy this for my PLD and just switch to it between fights for better MP regeneration. The only reason I might not is because it's pretty damn expensive and the quipping might become really annoying. I'll probably just make sure I have a rdm or brd with me at all times.
#REDACTED, Posted: Oct 10 2004 at 12:24 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I would never be able to get the Dark staff im to poor for this stuff... hey my server is Sylph so if you see me give me give caous i know all i got is 1k or less trying to camp but camping never works ive waited 5hrs each camp i did and all i got was... a no show i think the npc's or someone cursed my charector on the game when i made her ><

Why does dark bead cost more than the dark staff. On my server at least. I mean since the only way to make these are from a dark bead (Level 80 goldsmith?) ebony log and wind crystal. Or do wood workers try to level from these or hq these?

b/c if you HQ synth one of these it will sell for 4-6 times what the regular staff goes for.

Well, I just bought my ligth staff last nite, and now I will be saving for this baby. I went with light staff first b/c of the curing bonuses. With smn subbed at 25, auto refresh with a rdm refresh gives 4mp per tick, so that is not a prob. And with the extra clear minds that smn gave, resting is not a prob. Any advice to whm in deciding which is first? Go with light to help better your cures, then go for this. You can always rest during the fight if it is going well. And if you got smn as sub, make sure its at 25 for auto-refresh. Then again, this is all my opinion, and you do not have to listen to me. One more thing, soloing with light staff as a whm will be better, it hits harder than blessed hammer and it gives free carby. I know this gives free Fenrir (or reduced cost) but who has fenrir at low lvl smn?? I sure dont =P I would love to have him though
